Hello all, I am new to this thread, been trying to catch up on all the posts so far. Yesterday I seen my naturalpath and he would like me to start a keto diet, 10% carbs, 20% protein, 10% fat and the rest vegetables. How the heck can I do this? This can't be right is it? I have no problem giving up crap, I have done it before I can do it again, but I am already at 38% carbs for the day and to think I actually thought I was doing good today. hahahaha

Egads - Thanks for the encouragement a couple weeks ago that it's hard to lose weight during rads. I lost 2 lbs since Dx and getting ready to lose more. I only have 5 more rads left!

Sof - Congrats on your weight loss! So awesome! Hoping I can lose 10 pounds. You're an inspiration.

EDITED: DIDNT READ YOUR POST CORRECTLY VAMP...deleting the batman comment, you may kick me now LOL!!

Vammmmpppp!! Awesome you're in here girlfriend! My macros run 45-50% fat, 25-30% protein and 15-20% carbs at most! First things first, what is your goal? Weight loss? Gut issues? Joint pain? General health? Or all of the above. Check out the eating links on my original post to get yourself acquainted with the possibilities, and the carb chart below to work out a baseline of what you need. Your naturopath's numbers seem skewed to me. Low fat diets are just that.....diets, who needs that noise?. IMHO, not easy to stick to, not much good for anything. Has your PCP an opinion on this?? Have you cleared up your lung issues?? Big hugs...so happy to see you here!

Does anybody else find it almost impossible to keep your balance while using those big exercise balls? If anybody has any tips about this, please post them. Thanks. Meg

    Hiya Meg,

As you continue to use the ball your core will strengthen and it will get easier to balance. It's usually a weak core that causes imbalance. Yoga is an great way to get the core strong, and might be used in addition to the ball. What specific exercise are you doing that is causing imbalance?

Egads thanks for the response. He said he wants me on Keto, said it would help with the cancer not returning (I have something unconfirmed on my lung they are watching) and I am "borderline" anemic. My RBCs are low every other test it seems. He thinks by changing my diet I will fight the cancer and change my anemia. As for the breathing issue, still have it, just not as bad. It seems possible it's related to exercise, I do cardio and I am out for two to three days with the chest pain, cough, SOB and fatigue depending on how much cardio I do. I see my new oncologist on Tuesday, unfortunately the one I had is a jacka$$ that should not be working with people! Anyway so here I am trying to get better. I like exercise, I don't like being this fatigued, especially with the nice weather finally here! I need to plan, just ate something bad because I was so hungry and the raw veggies were not cutting it.

Hi ladies! Not a lot of time but just want to chime in quickly on a couple things.

    1. Keto by definition is high fat, very low carb and moderate protein. It is not a low fat diet, so your ND is definitely off on his recommendations. Although it might work at first, your weight loss can actually stall if you don't eat enough fat on a ketogenic diet. (edited to add: and you also won't get the same hunger- and craving-reduction benefits if you don't eat plenty of fat, as you may have already noticed.)

    2. Suggestion for issues with balancing on an exercise ball: try letting a little air out of it.

    Back to work for me!

This book will explain more than I can in the limited time I have available right now. I highly recommend it to anyone considering a ketogenic diet as an approach to cancer nutrition. I do modify the diet somewhat for ER+ breast cancer, and I will post more about that another time.

Hoping this link works. I’m not very tech savvy. I thought I would post an example of the meals I have when breaking my 24 hour fast. I realise that many of you won’t be doing dairy. I’m LCHF so it’s all good for me.

I’m following a program called What The Fat and What The Fast. It’s written by New Zealanders which makes things easy for me as sometimes the recipes from overseas websites don’t quite translate to what’s available here. I also like that there are heaps of vegetables in their recipes.

    JunieB, I am so sorry to hear about your results. If there is anything you need just ask. {HUGS}

Solfeo and Shazz thank you so much for the links.

Solfeo that makes sense why I was so hungry. I was wondering how I was going to survive on low percentages and vegetables alone. He said half the plate in vegetables, the other half is protein and minimal carbs. He does have me on a list to go to listen to a woman talk about the "diet".

Thank you all for this thread and helpful tips!

Egads, Hahahaha, I totally agree that I will let you look at the microbiome. Fresh eyes thingy. I keep upsetting my biome with the wine. Yes, the research is exploding. It will take between 5-10 years for medical docs to put it into practice. Some already are and have for years, but to have it as a routine thing as taking vital signs, that will take awhile.

Sol - I wondered if letting some of the air out of the ball would help. Thank you. Also, I think my clothing is too slippery for the ball. I'm going to expose some skin on my lower back and mid abdominal area to get more traction.

Glad to see a thread on this. I have contemplated Paleo for quite a while and have been recently diagnosed with Celiac disease so it appears that grain is not my friend. When I start reading about Paleo I get a little overwhelmed with some of the really unusual foods and the high fat. I have been diagnosed with some gastric and esophagus problems (caused from being an undiagnosed celiac) that require me to eat low acid, no acid, no tea, no coffee, no alcohol, no mint, no chocolate, no fried foods, reduce fatty foods (other than healthy fats like olive oil or avocado). Anyway, I am part way through reading all of the comments. What do you have to count or do on Paleo to lose weight as I do need to lose a significant amount?

Cowgal, It may be easier than you think to lose. I knew someone who went on the celiac diet and her weight fell off. Hope this is true for you as well. I think as long as your diet consists of protein and vegetables along with a reasonable amount of fat, you won't need to count anything. The Paleo diet should be perfect for your needs.

Meg101 - I am calmer today. One of the ladies on the Ibrance thread posted that she knows a person who had a vertebrae removed and replaced with a cadaver vertebrae, plus I received some info about another neurosurgeon who has high ratings and has experience with neuro-oncology, so I will be calling in the morning to make an appt. for a second opinion on everything before I make a decision. I don't want to let my fear/anxiety dictate my decisions.

Egads - I will confess that I fell WAAAAY OFF the Paleo wagon today, but I won't divulge just how I did it. Just don't want you to faint!

Mornin' All! Gots ma' coffee and ready to roll! Well, it's been a hectic week in Egad's world. My son graduated (with honours, WOOT!) from college yesterday and is on his way to uni in the fall, working towards his degree in business. It was surreal seeing him up there getting his diploma, as I said in an earlier thread he was 2 years old five minutes ago! Needless to say we are SO proud of him! The after dinner/party will make a very worthy Accountability/Indiscretion post on Monday lol!

Junie - I responded to your 'fall off the wagon' post in the insomniacs thread.....darlin', don't you worry one bit....sh*t happens, and when it does, it can grab and pull us all 4 sides to Sunday. So understandable, and probably necessary to the circumstances you are under. You and anyone on this board should never be ashamed/afraid/embarrassed to post a 'cheat'. This is a non judgemental group of cave chicks that put support first! Besides, it makes Indiscretion Monday all that more fun when we can say "ooooooh girl, you hit that cheat like a mofo!" LOL. Hugs!

Meg - Great idea on the slippery gym clothing, it can cause probs. To play the devils advocate here, I wouldn't personally deflate the ball. I think you might be surprised how quickly you'll build that core to balance given a week or two. In my experience I've always found using equipment 'as is' and muddling through builds faster and stronger. That said, If you're finding it impossible deflate by all means, this isn't a race. The most important thing is that you're using it....YAY YOU! Keep us posted on your progress and feel free to post any funny video you might take of your spills LOL!

Cowgirl - A big shout out and welcome to you! Paleo works beautifully with gastrointestinal issues, absolutely made for each other! I'm curious though, what did you mean by 'unusual foods'? Paleo is simply eliminating certain foods. If you're eating clean (No wheat, grain, legumes(beans), processed foods) you will come to embrace the healthy fats/oils. It's what keeps us full, and is a necessary part of paleo life. In the beginning it is kind of scary because of what we have been told by our doctors for years (scared the heck out of me too). Know that we absorb 10% of healthy fats and 80% of the unhealthy type. We don't count calories, but keep a 'watchful eye' on our carb intake, and choose complex carbs (veg) over simple carbs (sugar/wheat/grain). This is part of the reason I love it, Paleo isn't a diet, it's a lifestyle. Along with the food, there is moderate to low impact/strength exercise, de-stressing, play, and good sleep are recommended....mind/body/soul. I posted a chart which outlines the number of grams of carbs you should eat per day, and the different levels of carbs to either lose weight, maintain weight, or even gain if someone is underweight. I'll repost it below. As a side note, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis a year before going paleo. It's been in total remission since, with my gastro doc encouraging me to 'keep doing what you're doing'. I also suffered acid reflux disease for 15 years. It also disappeared along with my UC. I strongly suspect wheat/grain to be the culprit for both. Celiac runs in my family although I wasn't diagnosed. I started paleo to lose weight, and it fell off quickly, but the side effects of a healed up gastro system was the ultimate bonus! So, I will PM you some easy peasy 'get started' and 'why paleo' info (would take up too much real estate here on the thread), which I'm sure you'll find that it's not as complicated as it appears. Paleo will have your weight off, health in so much better order, hunger levels low, and your energy level will elevate. I'm always challenging folks to this so I'll extend the same to you.....try it for 7 days, it's so worth a shot. I'll be PMing you a very simple outline to get started if you choose this path. It only seems complicated, it really is very simple. Hope to see you join the cave crew! Here's the carb chart:

Soooooo, who's moving to Vegas this weekend? Anyone staying put or is the call of crinkling chip bags and wine speaking your name? Me, well, I had my fun so I'll have to live vicariously through the Vegas peeps lol! Not so rough, I have a dinner date with a big fat chicken and a whack of new whole spices....and I ain't afraid to use em'!

Holy Crap that book is telling me 20 grams of carbs per day at the max. Here I am sitting at 137 grams. I understand that it could keep my cancer from getting worse, but holy hannah no bananas??? I LOVE bananas! No carrots, no peppers, no peanut butter. I can do this, right? How do I do this? I am crying here, ok not literally, but WOW!

Egads007 - Yes, please PM the information. As for what I meant by unusual foods, when looking at Paleo cookbooks on Amazon, I have come across fish roe, garam masala and duck fat...not sure where to find any of those. Many of the paleo recipes are high in carb and many of the recipes I have seen where way too time consuming and/or complicated. I have a very busy life and need to be able to fix something in a reasonable amount of time. Maybe I am just looking at the wrong books.

Wren44 - When I first got diagnosed with celiac disease, I went and found substitutes for normal foods. Unfortunately, the processed gluten-free snacks are in general not even as "healthy" as the regular ones so I am working on excluding them. You might be right that Paleo is a good fit for me. It just seems that so many of the foods I have to avoid for all of my gi problems are in so many recipes.

I'm laughing right now, vampeyes! I don't know if you remember, but I mentioned that when my naturopath suggested keto to me he was very apologetic. I don't think he gets a very positive reaction from most people. I might be his only patient who was enthusiastic about it, and I'm still with it and doing great three years later, and 150 lbs. down.

I never push it on anyone, but I like to educate people about it because there are a lot of misconceptions, and I'm happy to help anyone who has decided to do it on their own.

20 carbs is what would be considered the therapeutic level if you are doing keto for cancer, or other disorders people use it for, but like Egads' chart says, most people can eat up to 50 and remain in ketosis. You would still lose weight and reap the benefits of lower blood sugar and improved blood lipids, if you don't feel ready to go all the way down to 20. Once your body is keto adapted you won't be hungry all the time or missing anything.

You can eat green bananas but you're probably not ready to hear that yet! I'll revisit that topic again later, because it ties in with what Sassy has been saying about gut microbiome. Green bananas feed the beneficial little buggers.

Solfeo, any help would be lovely. I want to do this to stop the cancer from growing, my kids are 9 and I want to see them grow into young men. When I search Keto recipes I see a lot of recipes with food that is on the forbidden list, this is frustrating and unhelpful. I have a bunch of recipe books reserved at the library. I bought the book you recommended and currently making my way through it, it's a lot of information and a lot I don't understand. Do you have any good websites with recipes to help get me started? I need a meal plan, that should help. My naturalpath when he mentioned it to me said lets get you to Paleo first and then aim for Keto. I did that Ideal Protein a few years ago, but that had a lot of packaged foods I am not interested in doing again. Thanks Solfeo. :)

Edited to add: I am finding that some websites are saying peanuts are ok, but I am pretty sure I read in the book that its a no-no....

JunieB, so sorry for your news. Hoping the doctors can get you back into a remission with the next steps.

Vampeyes, I like dietdoctor.com for low-carb eating plans and recipes. He is not Paleo exactly but LCHF - so you will see dairy which strict Paleo does not include. I am not currently following a super low carb diet, but I did his two-week challenge in the past and I think he has some really good support and recipes - one being make double dinner and take the leftovers for lunch the next day. To start, maybe try to get yourself to 50 grams of carbs, then you can refine to more precise keto.

I've been pretty good this week. I've been exercising a lot, which always ramps up my appetite and makes it harder to resist overeating. Yesterday I went with my son for lunch and had a cuban sandwich. While it was good, it really wasn't a "cheat" that I wanted to spend. Note to self, save grain cheat for my usual cheat - corn tortillas, and enjoy it. So to make it up to myself, for dinner I had eggs, cheese, tomatillo salsa and guacamole on three soft white corn tortillas - LOL.
