Architectural distortion in right breast

I received a call three days after my mammogram screening to make an appointment for a diagnostic mammogram and an ultrasound. Just today I checked my online chart and saw the findings of my mammo screening that showed the architectural distortion in my right breast only seen from the cranialcaudal projection medially. I have been working very hard to remain brave and to think as little as possible about this because worrying isn't going to change anything. After reading the mammogram result I'm finding it very difficult not to worry. I'll be 65 next month and all of my previous scans have been clear. Any and all encouraging words are welcome!!

Too early to panic. Several things other than BC can cause that finding on a screening mammogram.

They will want additional views to better visualize the area, including a few to try to see it from another angle to identify which quadrant it occupies. After that an ultrasound will be performed which hopefully will answer all your questions. Keep us in the loop, let us know how the follow up imaging goes.

hi djmammo. Do you have any input on a mammogram that shows a “mass with adjacent area of architectural distortion” I need to have an ultrasound now. I just finished radiation send of September 2017 a lumpectomy July 2017 and a year of herceptin in December 2017. This was my first mammogram since surgery and radiation. The radiologist notes read “all very likely to be post surgical” that the mass is likely “post surgical fluid collection?

The appearance you describe is common after lumpectomy + radiation. The surgical scar always looks more pronounced to me after radiation. Comparison with the pre-op studies should make this diagnosis reasonably easy.

A post-op fluid collection (usually a seroma) is also very common in this scenario and it has a characteristic appearance on mammography. These are easily detectable on US and if they are symptomatic can be drained with US guidance.

Let us know what the US shows.

    Thank you for your reply.

I had my diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound today. The architectural distortion could be seen on the mammogram, but they couldn't find it on the ultrasound. (the radiologist came in and looked for it, too). They're sending me for a tomosynthesis and a biopsy if need be, the radiologist said the AD isn't something they want to leave alone and I agree. Whatever it turns out to be, I want it out. :)
