Feeling Lost

Hello I have been feeling really bad for over a year now my nipples are sore i have discharge my right breast i get what they say is an infection in it and it swells up burns and hurts. But they say nothing is wrong. They keep me at a Birad 3 on my MRI and want me every six months. You can clearly see many changes between the scans in the last 11 months but they say nothing is wrong.

Is there somewhere i can go to have some one do a second look at the scans my surgeon they sent me to said she can not do anything asked her to go over the images and she would only go over the report with me.

What changes do you see between the scans that worry you?

candy, just fyi, surgeons aren't experts in reading mri (they read the reports that Radiologists prepare), so I'm not sure that will help you. In fact, my understanding is that all radiologists aren't even experts at reading mri. Breast mri should be read by someone who does that every day, who is expert at reading mri of the breast, not just mri (of say the knee or other body part). If you want a second opinion, IMO you want another Radiologist at an imaging center who specializes in breast mri.

I am wondering what you mean when you say "you can clearly see changes"? You personally see them? Do you have training in reading mri?

Hi concernedone95, what you're going through must indeed be very hard nervously. I think I would go for a second opinion. Which means go to a different doctor.

Before being diagnosed I had all my mammographies performed by the same doctor who never saw anything.

It's only thank to my daughter who insisted on me seeing a different doctor, that I went to the gyneacologist. He immediately felt something was wrong, and asked for a biopsy. Stupidly enough, I had the biopsy performed by my regular radiologist and again it came back with negative results. But fortunatly, the gyneacologist insisted on getting a second opinion, second biopsy ... by a doctor he knew. And the second result showed it was indeed an cancerous tumor.

This is just 'my' story. So please don't be afraid.

Getting a second advice is in all cases something that helps me. Ever since then, even now that I'm in treatment and have a very good oncologist, I get a second advice from time to time when my treatment has to be changed. I just feel safer, by doing so.

What day did you have the biopsy taken?

That seems a long time to wait, candy! I'd get on the phone tomorrow and start raising a fuss.

My GP got my biopsy results 3 days after. I can see maybe a week but not longer. That's crazy.....

ConcernedOne, so sorry this is causing so much stress. An MRI is a very sensitive test, so if they found benign cysts that is actually good news; it means it is not cancer. Discharge may mean you have a pappiloma (also non-cancerous) and I can see that the swelling and soreness would be of concern. Sounds like you should seek a second opinion at a breast cancer center, even if you need to travel to do it. Best of luck to you.
