Blue, Derechoes are kickers. I'd bbe checking out the nearest culvert, if I visited you. Hahaha, Here we have to look in culverts first....... those kids going off, it's tough. Keep us abreast of what's up with her. We live vicariously when possible. Damn Dog. Hehehe. the English cottage sounds so nice. With flowers all around. What's the name of the roof. Sod roof? Oh Pooh is so cute.
Mommie, lay in some supplies. Shouldn't be too bad. But you will be a the top of the wind. The snowstorm out west may help the situation.
Making a bread pudding. The house smells divine.
Waving 1 and all

Morning Owlies Sleep, oh glorious, sleep. Let's see if I can not wreck it's benefits today. I have to admit I'm a computer media junkie. Too many hours a day. One of the points over the break was to gain control over it. I just stepped up reading on the election cycle. Oh well..........I know the lesson, but I keep flunking it.
Electricity outages Florida:
Brevard County: Is totally restorded per chart. I see lot's of trucks on the road.
Broward county the second set of stats is above Miami
I'm guessing , maybe the 12 million for outages stat was the two storms combined(?)
Bummer made a nice little chart that showed the southern biggest counties Miami-Dade and Broward, but it didn't post the same and won't let me delete. Sorry. it would have been nice for those with family in the south. It's not a page I could link the URL.
COUNTY OUT RESTORED AFFECTED TOTAL Brevard 2,290 305,310 307,600 307,600 Broward 12,990 781,570 794,560 933,300 Miami-Dade 52,290 967,965 1,020,255 1,114,000 Total 236,630 4,217,980 4,454,610 4,904,045

AC lesson:
After the storm: We had electricity, I set the Temp at 76. Normally 79-80 in daytime for energy conservation.
Post storm: The humidity was high, we and floors felt sticky. Chose to set at 76. Everyone felt better and house humidity improved. It went back up yesterday --Sunday--one week post storm. The lesson for me is we felt better which I think, retrospectively, is not a minor consideration. It reduced stress by being comfortable. We are part of the FPL brown out of reducing energy when the broader system needs it. It save 12$ in season /month. FPL didn't need to reduce delivery where it was returned.
This now becomes part of the plan to set temp lower in same or similar circumstances.

Trivial pursuit travel tip: Money magazine, Sept 2017, pg 16
"A study by the Airline Reporting Corporation looked at 26 million fare transactions and found that the lowest ticket prices can be found on weekends, purchased more than 21 days in advance. The study also noted that Fridays are when you will spend the most to purchase your ticket"
-
NPR interviewed the mayor? of Broward county about the electricity outage. Hers has been out for 7 days.
-
Went to bed worrying about my SIL being in the path of Maria. She and some other members of her National Guard unit got sent to the Virgin Islands last week to help out with recovery efforts from Irma. They didn't know if they were going to be able to get out of Maria coming at them. Woke up to good news from my brother that my SIL and the others with her there will be getting out of harms way until Maria goes by.
-
Wren, trying to reorder the chart. Broward County only.
OUT- 12,990
RESTORED-781,570
AFFECTED--794,560
TOTAL--933,300 served in county.
Bummer, they are in the last phase (last 12.990) to be fixed. Methinks there was something significant about how they got hit.
Like Donnie's friend, his transformer fell. His target fix day was Thrus or fri. They came back to fix it. The transformer was stolen. Took two more days. He got power back yesterday Sun. He had two odd occurrences. Each occurrence dropped him to a lower priority. Initially he was in the secondary or tertiary, but then they had to get a transformer. A parts delay.
On Thurs last, I watched the Orlando Utilities Company explain how the process worked.
Critical fixes first. Hospital, nursing homes. Not sure what else is on the critical list
Primary fixes after criticals are in a grid, and takes 15 minutes or less. Primary fixes highest priority after criticals
Secondary fixes are more complex, but still short things with access.
Tertiary fixes more complex. Major access problem i.e. flooding, substation without access, substation rendered inoperable b/c of whatever.
_____________________________________________________________
It may be worth a question to the controlling power company in a week or so. Why so long? Knowing the answer can lead to another question. How do we avoid this in the future?
1. If it was an "act of God" type thing i.e couldn't have been predicted. OH well. It is what it was.
2. It may have been forseeable, that they will now correct for the future. i.e. flood control that can be corrected, site prep for a substation, upgrading equipment.
Personally, while a forseeable failure just frosts your coffee. They will correct it. Also, knowing the answers to the two questions, allows the affected folks to follow up with the power folks to make sure corrections are made.

Mommy YAY they are safe. What a relief
Wren DGS< SON< and DIL?

When I wrote about minimal affect on my community. In addition to the protection of the barrier islands and aggressive surface water management and flood control, codes are strictly enforced.
Housing concrete block. Stick houses (frame) don't do well in a blow. Standards after Andrew seriously changed. Oodles of building code requirements according to Miami-Dade Broward counties. Guessing they are the highest standard in the world.
Trees and debri. Homeowners do allot of property management. I have taken down 19 slash pines over the years. Hated to cut down a living thing. But slash pines can be several stories high. Regretfully, my lot is treeless now. Most coming down was 12 at one time, prior to new concrete drive. It was logical for several compelling reasons. Heavily influenced by neighbor that had several on their house with structural damage & pool enclosure which was a total loss with a blow. I even took down a neighbors tree when he refused b/c it was oddly weighted at an angle over my screen enclosure. Tree removal was $250 for that single tree(cheap). Pool enclosure would be about 10-20 K. No brainer. Rescreening alone after 2004 was 5700$. Roof was relatively cheap b/c there was only shingle damage, but it was cheaper to fully replace. Nothing structural.
My forseeable risk now, is neighbors on both sides haven't been as proactive re: slash pines & other trees. That's always a worry. Regretfully, if they come on my property in a blow, that's seen as an "Act of God". I'm responsible for the damage, they aren't. I wish the law would change in that regard. It would force homeowners to become even more proactive.

They will be as of later tonight. Took a lot of worry off my mind for SIL. Now waiting for word on my niece who is undergoing weight loss surgery today.
-
Sas - may they all have power restored asap - Feline welcome back, relieved you must be for the family's soon to be baby -
Well if we are dreaming of cottages, I could do these for a few months with some friends.
more pics of the bedroom photo cottage second one down...... https://www.zoopla.co.uk/to-rent/details/37942657?...
cottage for rent in UK countrysidebedroom of a cottage in a town, but so perfectly tranquil.
5 bed
the converted barn to home above..... and yes it needs flowers and more trees.
and old gloomy above. but those gardens!I found a converted barn for rent that has sliding French doors across the front and back. Not practical in bear country (another story of why I am surprised I am still here) but in the UK it will be lovely.

Lovely, Blue. One of my Favorite movies is Quiet Man. Everything was shot in Ireland. I suppose there were a few sound stage shots. But overall it was a rare and new concept to shoot all on location.
-
Heard from my niece a few minutes ago. Her surgery went well, she is sore and pretty tired. Told her to get some rest.
-
-
Oh so lovely Sas.
-
Feline, wouldn't it be nice to have that projected on the ceiling as a wake up alarm with surround sound. He has some others on youtube, but I haven't listened yet. I would have loved to see and hear Paul Simon's reaction
.
I had a call from the niece in Houston. Fema covered the cost of the 3 day hotel room. So, it comes back to me. Yoohoo. Didn't expect that. Nice.
Mags hootiehooooooooooandwhoopdidooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Yes, Quiet Man. Though dragging her home wouldn't fly nowadays. She would kick his arse down the hill.
I love Leap Year set in Ireland. Matthew Goode and Amy Adams at their best - that is until she did Arrival this year. Have watched it 6 times since 2015.
Am all about Wales, so the close by countries intrigue me too.
The guitar is beautiful art, look closely. Nice! A fan of folk music, esp that era.
Last night went to bed by 1, slept well, woke at 9. Brushed dog and talked to Hubby. Back to bed at 10 and slept like someone drugged me until 2. NOW I feel better. Rash diminishing and not hot. Heart not racing in my throat scaring me. Much better.
-
Hi Blue, Not sure I have heard of Leap Year, but sounds like I should watch it and Arrival. I agree, on the dragging scene in Quiet Man. What an out roar that would cause today. Plus, the cameo of the lady saying " Here's a stick to beat the nice lady with". Oh my. Hahaha.
Glad the rash is subsiding. Had skin issues too, they can drive us nuts. Mine was niduced by my one and only chemo. Took months to subside. Then another issue with RAI-131 with thyroid cancer. I know you thought your's was drug induced b/c of a screw up. Damn doesn't screw up's just want make you want to rip someone a new one. Glad the throat is better too.
-
Yes, the screw ups are uncalled for. We have to have knowledge and watch every move and no one likes us to do that.
Mine was due to lupus - I was given an increased dose of prednisone which caused the reaction, I lowered the dose but damage was done. Took Benadryl to help but the third pill in 3 days made me worse than ever and it went up from there. Thought I was going to literally run out of my skin and surprise myself. But avoided the ER. Taking a combined dose of Pepcid AC and Claritin so block both H1 and H2 histamines and it calmed right down though I am still a mess.
Leap Year - wish we could have a party and watch it together. Arrival, Hubby and DD and I watched 3 x in 3 days, it has layers!
-
Well, I am in Oahu visiting DS, but I am in Pali Momi hospital. After feasted two days on his mangos, apple bananas, oranges, papayas, and Lemmon from his back yard, I started getting stomach and intestines pains. Trying to be brave for 4 days, finally gave in and walked into ER. They told me that I have small bowel obstruction, sent me to 6th floor, no food , no drink and a NG through the nose. Try to escape this Morning, did not succeed. At least NG is pull off now. Waiting for the lentil soup this evening. 😦Never thought lentil soup will sound that delicious.
-
Ahhhh Eeyore, "How tall does the tree grow" "How many ways does this suck". CHIT. Yes, that first 'something' after the NG comes out is special. It truly is special. Even more special, if you don't vomit. That's the ah-hah moment. They move you to the next level. So, hope it goes well.
Once had a women that was a TPN Total Parenteral Nutrition for weeks. The big milk bag. She was transitioned off by clear liquids along with TPN still running. Then the TPN was stopped. Asked what she wanted for her first real meal. "A mounds bar". Cleared it with the doc. Dietary said they couldn't do it. I said "This woman hasn't eaten in x amount of time what can we do to make this happen?". Everyone got into it and it happened. Such a happy lady.
-
BLUE "Thought I was going to literally run out of my skin and surprise myself." Your alliteration knows no bounds. Once knew an old Peds doc who spent his last years in a pediatric ER in Akron Children's. Overheard him say in response to a resident that was admonishing a mom for not taking a temp, but did it by feel. "Never discount what the parents or patients tell you". It was an early life lesson for me.
Yes, we need to protect ourselves from those that care for us. Sad, but true. They are human. They reach a degree of understanding in their field. But when they don't listen, things happen, that could have been avoided.
-
Out of body experiences. Once had an 02 tank blow. I was trying to show a new kid how to do it safely. WHO HOO , It blew. I found myself many feet behind the scenario, looking at me collapsed next to the tank. The ER people were running everywhere. The curtains were flying.
At a given point I said I had to get back into my body and turn it off. I did. The sound was crushing before and after. I decided to jump back in. In the moments of out of body, it was total silence. I just observed everyone's movement.
I know this all seems totally crazy, but that's what happened. Told here for the first time. I knew no one would believe me about the out of body experience at the time. Since found it is normal

hmm Not another day in paradice
-
Mari?????? Paradise?
-
You know the bumper sticker? Just another day in Paradise. What? She said she was fine now. Did I say something wrong? I'm sorry Eeoyore. Didn't mean any harm. Oh! How was the lentil soup?
-
I was just pointing out that paradise isn't all it's cracked up to be. Sorry again. Should I go away
-
Exactly, thank you for your kindness. And yes I have hit the top of my pain scale today but don't consider it a bad day. Just very worried why. Long story, all joints, muscles are screaming. Told my son to keep his phone on
-
Mamma, This is where we all become significant in the thread. We accept....all the thoughts... You have a list that you can call in the middle of the night.. Terribly important......add me to the list. Coming here on Insomniacs is a way to release in the middle of the night. But a real voice to talk too............. no comparison. Voices are connectedness that compare to nothing else.
I know you have connectedness to many, you are blessed.
I'm up.....it' 12: 11 Wed, Sept 20th Yay we have a day.
