INSOMNIACS place to talk in the wee hours

Hi, Haven't read back yet, but will Thanks all.
Today is the first I've checked in on the wider Florida news. The worst is the nursing home deaths in Hollywood Fl. 8 total so far. 4 agencies investigating. The article linked had the best sequential information. Had the ranking emergency operations commanders at each level of EMS, EOC, and hospital(across the parking lot) not acted, the deaths would have been higher. The important aspect of this is that each leader, recognized rapidly once they saw eary trends that deaths were being reported, reacted. The person in charge at the nursing home telling the Emergency Operations Center(EOC) that they didn't need or have need of medical assistance, will IMO be found criminally negligent.
This is from CNN for once I see a factual report from them. This quote is from the last paragraph.
" These South Florida facilities are among hundreds of nursing centers in the state. The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, which licenses and regulates such facilities, says there are 683 nursing homes in the state with more than 84,000 beds. In addition, there are more than 3,100 assisted living facilities with more than 99,000 beds. Copyright 2017 by CNN NewSource. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed."
" The Florida Health Care Association, which represents 81% of Florida's nursing centers -- but not the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills -- said on Wednesday that about 150 facilities out of nearly 700 nursing home facilities in the state do not have full power services restored." Why not?
This will change disaster planning everywhere. This will be held as a seminal critical management event failure for a disaster planners. Planning revisions are being talked about now all over the country by disaster folks checking their plans.

Electric outages: Patty, thanks hadn't been able to find a total number
!2 million
Interactive power outage map: Everything south of a line directly across from St. Petersburg to Stuart. Above that line all east cost counties up to Georgia. States above us too, but that number not in the tracking map I found.
My county Brevard: 307, 600 outages, 231, 520 restored, 76, 080 still out. I still hear the hum of generators. But less each day. Neighbors across the street restored YAY. The one family that we gave our generator too, has a special needs child. Autistic. Evacuating would have been very difficult. They did well.
Problem with generators is the gas shortage.
My lesson was almost horrific. I went to move a gas container. Gasoline splashed on the right side of my face. I have a pull out faucet, I rinsed for a long time. Then my eye lid continued to burn and I went back to rinsing for another length of time.
After a couple few minutes of initial rinsing, I washed the gasoline off with dish soap. Then continued rinsing for many more minutes.
When I say rinsing, The water was on full power. Head over sink, with pull out faucet direct up at my face. The action is the same as used with an eye wash station in any required facility.
Length of rinsing: acids 15 minutes. Alkali's 30 minutes. Minimum.
Then I ran the water in the sink and washed it to disperse any left over gasoline and fumes in the piping. Gas fumes in piping not good

Water: This changes all
The wind turned up sediment in the water source which fouled the intake to the water treatment plants. Plus, trees roots being ripped out of the ground broke water mains. The systems of Melbourne (south county) and Cocoa (central, mine) lost pressure. The barrier islands are worse than the mainland
Lessons: Filling the tubs essential(did 50 gallons), bottled water enough for two weeks. Ice next time for me will be 2x's to 3 x's what I made. I likely could have survived till Sunday, but gave ice to neighbors and neighbor was here.
Not pooh poohing the way it occurred or the sharing. Just would plan that we would have a similar occurrence. So, next June I will freeze similar amount, then make twice(or buy) more when a hurricane is announced.
Jug water was gone in my locale 10 days before Irma arrived.
Nick just called with an update. His thing with water was to freeze jug water, slice the plastic, empty in a bag and smash it.
Many using any plastic container
A real DUH moment, individual bottled water can be put in freezer too. Did that last night. I'm not a bottled water person, I know that people have always done that, but it flew right by me.
BOIL water alert b/c of pipe breakage: I've failed at that miserably. I keep unthinkingly taking water from frig or washing my teeth with tap water. Even with bottled water sitting on the counter.
Plus, inadequate planning for disposable utensils and drink ware. Always have paper plates so that wasn't an issue. Neighbor had disposable cups. OOdles of utensils, but not throw away's.
ICE trays are the hottest commodity right now. Because ice can be made from bottled water if you have electricity. I will be adding at least 4-6 to the hurricane kit.
BOIL alert Lifted for us at 10:30 Sept 15th TODAY YAY, but if there really a contamination, I'm still at risk b/c I drank it during the alert OH WELL.
-
Food: This changes all too.
Food for two weeks too. We had enough food, but we had electricity.
I will be purchasing some of those survival meals for the hurricane kit. I'll be looking for those that have either unlimited expiration date or many years shelf life.
My Publix's didn't open until today@ 7am. North in next community opened wed late. Walmart opened yesterday. But areas south are still under electricity and water outages. Aldi yesterday
Key, most lost all refrigerated and frozen foods. In store baking and a food prep i.e subs, chiken>>nada. Bread and milk not available. Dear Donnie, saw I gallon of whole milk. He didn't buy it b/c I get 1/2 gallons(spoilage) and 2 %. So sweet to think of the usuals, but this isn't the usual.
No restaurants open. Ironic how a society dependent on going out to eat, reacts when fast food and sit down restaurants aren't available.
Resupply, still will take unknown amount of time. Between Texas, Louisanna, Florida, Peurto Rico, Keys, and fires out west, I'm still of the opinion that you should lay-in some commodities i.e TP, food, and whatever you think necessary.
-
Sas - this is reminding me we have to restock. We just are not prepared for any outage right now. Water even. There are tornadoes and Derechoes that can keep us isolated and without power for four days. And blizzards or heavy snow where we are without power for a week, snowed in here on the ridge, trees falling even over the drive. And I have become very lax. Though I am prepared for fire, the rest, not at all right now.
-
Feline, Just talked to Steve Your niece is in Tampa The area did good. Most everything was back to normal by Tues and Wed. Broward is in the no electricity tacking map, but so am I.
The electricity is being returned rapidly, but I have no idea what is happening south. Your niece probably has a handle on it b/c she's closer.
Wren how is DS and family doing?
LOverly, Oh Vey, such trouble. Reading back now. What was your abbreviation to Mari. PAH. Too often abbreviations and acronynm' s are used for more than one thing. My PAH knowledge is related to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons. Doesn't fir your post, but just in case it does. I have some stuff on the Microbiome thread studied in 2015. There is also, a metformin discussion, ut they aren't on the same pages....Wildfires your place? Loverly, when you hear of a family issue you can help with then do, if you can't do anything disassociate from it. Your right the stress can kill us, and since we are focused on life, even if it's hard, kick out what is hurtful.
Shep thanks about Retsky. Glad the storm died and you weren't hurt. I did see where tropical storm winds affected all of the southern states for several days. Haven't checked since YOU okay?
JWoo saw the reference re : Metformin What was your issue?
Lookie, hope you stay safe, and glad to see you. Gald you had so much fun with sisters in Vegas and that you are taking a trip to the East..... Yay on nipple Tatoo. We should think about a nipple page where people can post there Tatoo artist's particulars Location, Name, Phone etc. For so long there have been so few with no central thread that has particulars.
YAY Mommie. chemo doing okay!!!!!!!!!!
Feline, just reread your description of what happened in the police department for food. Hopefully when they get to assessing and revamping plan, they include a "fix" for that. It can be done, if people brainstorm ideas.
In my old hospital when plans were being developed for the new hospital, I made many suggestions Hahaha seven pages. Some were incorporated, some not. But the things they discarded have since been incorporated. I guess that's some vindication.
Bluebird sorry you are having it so rough
...Anyone helping out? I'm going to send phone number. Blue what is a "Derechoes" What state or country are you in? I know the prep is so hard. But adequate kits and revising needs can so reduce the stress. Hold off on individual bottle water purchase. I'll post why latter.

Sas. A great read. Thanks. Is there anything you are not well versed in ? Love your knowledge. Glad you are ok esp your eye. How sweet of you to help with generator for neighbor or with special needs child.
Hootie hoo

Oh Patty, so nice of you say such a sweet thing, but there are two reasons it may seem I know lot's. One, I'm old 67, we accumulate lot's of info in our lifetime. Two, it happens, stuff keeps hitting those topics I've learned and kept up on. Put me outside that sphere, and it's not there in the memory bank. See there's one below.
.........................................
This is a kinda a DUH thing. You would think I would have looked it up since the gasoline exposure. Gasoline is not an acid or alkali. BUT it's management is like an acid so I did the right thing. Coulda been wrong. Shoulda looked it up right away. Trust but Verify.

SAS, Thanks for inquiring about my DS. The level 1 evacuation now extends to the edge of town. Main problem for them is that younger GS has asthma. They keep trying to find places to take him for better air. The Hood River school system is closed today due to bad air and there's a community briefing at noon tomorrow about the fire. They are storing some items for a friend who lives in the forest and has a level 1 evac order. I'm proud that he's so willing to help where he can.
-
Wren so sorry, doubly with DGS having asthma.
We went through fires in Florida in 1998(1999?) where we had to be prepared for evacuation. I put everything in laundry baskets. Easy to carry, easy to stack. Wrapped valuable memory stuff in the clothes i.e Moms tea cups and pictures in underwear and socks. That way it was a two for one. Only so much could be taken. The laundry baskets made contents visible versus a bag that would have to searched for items once evacuated.
We had a van and a car. Baskets wouldn't work to well in a car
Those baskets remained that way in the living room(unused room effectively), for several months. We had fires all summer long.
Sorry, they are probably out already.
All disasters are horrible

The Republic is dead. America is no more. We have entered the Orwellian State.
The Charlottesville Resolution is the end of Free Speech and the beginning of the end of the USA. The globalist have won.
From here on free speech does not exist. Anyone not liking what you are saying can report you to local, state, federal authorities.
Had Trump not signed .i.e. vetoed the resolution, Congress would have been seen by history as the cause for the beginning of the end of the Republic. Regretfully, now my dear Trump will be blamed. Alas, "They know not what they have done" Suppression of all speech is now the law of the land.
http://www.politico.com/story/2017/09/06/senate-charlottesville-trump-hate-groups-242361
-
It was a unanimous vote by the Senate on the Charlottesville Resolution. Doesn't make it a good thing. Are they more rightul in their vote, then I in my condemnation of the resolution. No.
How this resolution will be used from this day forward. You or anyone not liking what, I or you, say or write can report us. I/you then will have to defend myself/yourself. People will not be able to defend themselves b/c of cost. Secondly, people don't want to be branded as racist. The easier out, is not to speak. Even in small close knit groups of trusted friends, people will begin to hold their thoughts for fear of being reported. My words may have no racism about it. It won't matter.
All public speech will begin to be censored. Self censoring for the same reasons as above.
Why do I know this is true b/c it is already happening. The "power" in the Charlottesville Resolution is the reporting.
I know many here are afraid to talk politics. There was a time debate was the mark of great minds. Debate has been dead for along time. Rarely can two people with opposing views talk.
Not that I want continued debate here, as it would make many here uncomfortable. But this is historic. Another fact likely not going to be mentioned anywhere Rubio from Florida and Harris from California tried to introduce legislation months ago that would do effectively what Charlottesville Resolution does. It was not well received by anyone and was closeted.
The President and Congress "bit the apple" on the resolution b/c they didn't want to be seen as racist by not signing. My words that this is the end of the Republic are my own. But in coming days you will see many espousing similar thoughts.
Our beautiful Constitution is critically wounded. Is it a mortal wound? I hope not.

Did BCO Insomniac's break or is my writing that powerful Hahahah. Fierce Bluebird used to tell that was so
-
Derechoes - straight line winds.... we haven't had these for four years but they come from South America or are like those. This was my last firsthand experience. We lost hundreds of trees in the forests here and forty on a few acres on the ridge, count was done after I wrote this.

Title - The Damn Dog
-
Bluebird . OMD we have a famous Author and Humorist. You are today's Mark Twain. OMD how much fun. Laughed and laughed at your post on the link. Then more laughing.
The derechos however are no laughing matter. You are dead on right, that we need to know how to protect ourselves from a derechos. Hmm maybe a bad way to say that. So, let's just leave that and give it a laugh for the first part and a ho-hum and move on.
So, are you hearing the word and description applied in the weather reporting? No particular description on what to do.
I was aghast in moving here in 1992 that they had no towers with sirens.
I went to the county EOC and asked to read all there disaster plans. Anyone can do this. I asked about the sirens. This was the lesson. In Florida, Tornado's don't behave(my word) like tornado's up north. They jump up and down, may track in a direction, but can't be trusted to do so. Hence, a siren system would be valueless.
Many, many, thanks for the story about you and your beautiful Newfie . Already blanking on his name. Dog's are the cat's meow
-
Icemaker back on. The noise' s coming out of it are a hoot. We were told to expect air in the line's . They didn't say it would be belching in the freezer. I thought Donnie was home.
AND then Donnie really does walk through the door hahaha

Happy Saturday MammaRay and everyone!
-
Goodness grief! So much I want to write, but so little time.
Ms. Sas, I need to print out what you have learned over the years about preparing for adisaster. Thank you for sharing. But that is just you. You don't keep the knowledge to yourself. That is one the many things I love about you. Interesting that you also think about feeling the bathtub with water. Simple things that we overlook.
Patty, thank you! Very much appreciate your prayers. I am so glad you are feeling better, but sad about your BFF.
MammaRay, I was elated that you have decided to do radiation to your back to help with the pain. Hate that it is so difficult and stressful for you though to get to the center for treatment. Maybe with the pain relief you will.....umm reconsider....you know what I meant? Thought about you this morning.....I have the same hope for you and Patty as a mother. Does that make sense?
Ms. Wren, sorry to hear about your DS' situation and DGS' asthma aggravated by the smoke in the air. We desperately need rain to clean the air.
BlueB, always have a good chuckle reading your stories. Want to comment but no time. BBL I hope.
-
Always be prepared!
-
MammaR glad you are doing the spine radiation. Palliative radiation is a good thing. I deleted my post and placed a picture of the innerbelt. I have family and North Canton and Green. What you said that I reversed, is what I was trying to say. I sooooooo wasted all that beautiful energy gained from that 10 hours of sleep. Now I feel like a punching bag again
Loverly, No, no, no much of what I wrote is common hurricane prep. When I mentioned the tub, it was just as a reinforcement. See, we all have been filling our tubs forever. We never had to use the water before. It all seemed such a waste. Literally, water down the drain after the storm. All is changed now. Forever, people will do more water prep and be talking about "remember Irma" etc. and sharing tips.
One tip I did make up was to put a kitchen size garbage liner in a tall soup pot to hold the liner, then pour in the ice maker contents. Worked good.
Junie called. She's been exhausted with to much going on She says Hi
. Kirby get's snipped on Monday. It been smoky in Salem. Portland was worse. The fire was started by a 16 y/o boy intentionally throwing firecrackers over a cliff..
We are going to run off to dinner. Portifino's is open with a limited menu. It's more to get out than anything
something is swirling out in the atlantic besides Jose.

Hootie hoo all

Hello everyone!
I am WAYYY behind.
As Sas said we got to talk for a bit earlier today. Fatigue & Fibro make it more difficult to get everything I want to do done. I check my email in the evenings and usually I'll think, "I need to check BCO", but then my eyes are falling closed and I go to bed because my brain doesn't work well when I'm really tired. Typing a normal sentence wouldn't work out well.
I was in my jammies until after 3 p.m. today, then got a shower and got dressed in actual clothes. Then I made myself get in the kitchen and make a pot of tomato soup from some garden fresh tomatoes given to me. I didn't want to let them go bad. I also found a recipe for Olive Gardens Zuppa Toscana. Well a knock off, but it sounds very yummy and not too difficult to make either.
I also have a sewing project (burp clothes) that I HAVE to get done so I can deliver the gift to a couple who are having a baby boy in the next week or maybe two at most. I just need some umph!
My Kirby baby is going to the vet bright and early Monday morning for his teuter. He turned 11 mos. old on Sept. 12th. Can't believe it.
I am so glad to hear that all our sisters in or near the hurricanes are safe.
Sensi - How is dear old Chance doing?
Loverly - Glad to hear your Dad is going to have the surgery. The pics of your niece are adorable!
Wren - Is the smoky air getting better up your way? It has in my area and we are so glad. I sure wish the authorities would sentence the teenager that started the Gorge fire 5 years of community service working to help replant the trees lost in the fire, doing restoration and helping the families that had to evacuate because of his thoughtless/immature actions. Maybe make his parents help too.
Shep - Interesting way to re-purpose ones washing machine.
Well Kirby is pawing me to take him for a walk, so I better get to it. Goodnight to all.
-
Just when you thought it was safe to come out.
As Hurricane Jose ambles northward in the Atlantic far off the East Coast, an innocuous-sounding system has turned into Tropical Storm Maria in the Caribbean and could well follow Irma's destructive path toward Florida as a full-blown hurricane.
At 5 p.m. Saturday, the National Hurricane Center upgraded the one-time disturbance to Tropical Depression Maria and said it was 620 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles, moving west at 20 mph. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.
A hurricane watch was issued for Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat, a route followed by Irma as it moved westward.
-
hmmm, I wonder what this means for Pacific Northwest. Thanks to my thyroid I have a two degree temperature range and am most comfortable when the stat is between 50 and 60. Wild weather carries on.
Montana Snow About 60 Days Early
By Chet Walker
I live south of Missoula, Montana, in the Sapphire & Bitterroot Mountains at 3,500 ft; in the area being discussed, and we haven't been getting snow like this for several years. Our hunting seasons have been without snow quite regularly and last year we didn't get ANY snow until the last few days of the season in late November. However the winter snow sticks around here until early August at higher altitude (6,000 ft+).
So, it's about 60 days early, and with this the bow hunters might stop complaining about terrible tracking conditions without SNOW. Animals leave tell-tale tracks in the snow to follow their movements.
The real change has been the temperature and seasonal shift. What used to take several weeks to change from blistering hot to a cooler fall season has turned into an OVERNIGHT event. Even with hot days (80s & 90s), the nights are dropping into the mid to low forties. This summer has been like the Sahara and then overnight NOW it's cold-drizzly-wet old London, and then our next day is followed by northern Norway. We could turn around of course and go back to the Sahara for a couple of weeks, but if the snow sticks and keeps advancing down the mountainsides then the shift to winter will have deleted our having any FALL season.
Sometimes we get an Indian Summer; a reprieve with sun & heat in early November, but they have become all but scarce events.
It's very early to get this kind of snow, however (trying to be positive) we do need it to possibly dampen and put out some of the high-mountain fires that have been allowed to go unchecked. Global warming nonsense is only a political expedient …try living here in the cold reality.
-
Last night I went to bed at 1 and awoke at 6 or so. Night before I went to bed at 1 and awoke at 2pm - 13 hours sleep straight through. Will be going back to sleep I hope in a little bit. But forgot to log out here and turn off computer.
Thanks for the likes on my The Damn Dog story. Hubby and I got a kick out of re-reading it to the dog (Danny Boy). If we say Damn Dog just right he laughs, the dog, that is.
Sas - no reports it could happen again but we had three out of the blue and for first time ever back then. First took out the biggest trees, second the mid sized then third just blew over but it was still a basement runner when we realized what was coming across the meadow. The best for anyone out of doors in those winds is to get behind a solid barn or house because trees are going to come down, winds can be up to 175mph. One took out the county airport. The one the week before that took the power had pontoon boats out of the resort lakes on both sides of us - just blew them right out and into the roads. One lake lost about 80 trees all around, it was an 8 mi in diameter lake with houses on 90%.
Going for breakie w Hubby and daughter this morn, this will be the second to last Sunday breakfast we will have together as she is leaving for the UK on 25th. I keep telling her when she said she is afraid of leaving here, missing so much of here, that she has to say to herself that she will be back. When I have been depressed or too sick to move that is how I get out of bed - I get up to use the bathroom and tell me I will go back for a nap as soon as I this and that. It is a lick and a promise that sometimes never happens, but I tell me that anyway so I can go on. And so I am telling me now that she will be back or I will be well enough and have the money to go there for five months at a time. Stay in an English country cottage and see here off and on while there writing or whatever I be doing with myself. It's like a good dream.
-
Hey Y'all! Glad Irma has gone away and that all are safe.
Feline - How is the preggers niece? Has baby decided to make a debut yet? I know we were all worried for her. Yes, she'll have some memorable stories to tell the babe! Blessings to the little family.
Lookie - We've been missing you. Happy to have you back! When you tour the east coast, how far will you go? If you make it this far down South we can go sit on the beach with our feet in the warm water and soak up some sun. And tell stories of course!
Patty - The owls in the woods behind my house were loudly calling hootie-hoo tonite. Made me think of you
M0mmy - A pumpkin fronted by fall leaves? Picture please! It's so nice to decorate for the different seasons and holidays. Really lifts one spirits
Loverly ~ Invoking WildT's name to scold me? Harumph ... (looking indignant and not at all guilty) I forgive you my friend. Family....We get older and roles reverse. And we lose patience with the ones who continually try us. All you can do is what you know and feel is best. Spend your time with the ones who truly need you. Your girls, DH and Dear Parents need you most. I know it's hard, but not all our loved ones want us to help or can be helped. Somethings are best left in His hands.
Wren - May your DS and family stay safe. Poor GS, hope he can grt to some cleaner air. It is nice of DS to help his friend. Isn't it a wonderful feeling when our children do "good"? You should be proud of yourself for raising such a fine young man!
MammaRay - I am proud of you. Rads will make a tremendous difference! I've had pain go away after just 2 zaps. What day did you start? I know getting in and out of the car and bringing the wheelchair is difficult. I do like to have my own chair though when I go out. I am a wee bit of a germaphobe - no worries of cooties from strange hospital chairs anymore! Plus mine is pretty comfy and I can be bossy and tell FFH what to do!
Sassy - You are so good. Really.
Mari - Have seen the Ventusky weather site? It is supposed to be THE most accurate for storms. Sas, you would like it too. You can put in your zip code and the zips of other places too to see what wind speeds to expect. It is very sciencey.
-
Oh Miss Blue - You make us smile with your stories of your babies. Here's a smile for you;
And Junie;
-
Shepkitty - LOL that meme reminded me of the Danny Boy story when got fixed at age 6. He was pretty attached to his royal jewels by then, so you can imagine the freak out he had when he realized it was gone. Someday I will write that story. When I feel better. I stopped writing but will again. Hopefully a book or two finished right and published too, someday. Like when I am in a cottage in rural UK, that would be nice.
This morn I hurried off here and opened the windows so I could hear the whip-poor-wills before they went to bed, they yell so when they come back to the nest. But I was too late today. A few morns now we have heard the baby - when the papa gets back with food the baby cries out WHIP WHIP WHIP WHIP. Someday it will have the whole sentence.
-
Forgot to add my pic of Pooh when he was that little. Oh yes, he was spoiled, so spoiled.
A story about Pooh - https://skunkiedelight.wordpress.com/2010/07/13/little-pet-skunkbrother-to-call-my-own/ Pooh when he got a baby brother. For all you insomniacs out there with nothing to do.
