Do You Get Blood Work Before Scans?

I go for zometa every three months, seeing the onc just before getting the iv. She always orders bloodwork that is drawn that day.

I have never been told to get blood work prior to getting my scans, which I get a bone and ct scan every six months. The last time at the onc's, the woman behind the desk who always does the scheduling for the scans asked about my getting blood work before the getting the scans. I told her I never had blood work done prior to scans before. But, sure enough, she came into the treatment room as I was getting zometa with an order to get the BUN and Creatinine blood draws prior to my scans next time.

I am not sure how it is that scheduler is seeing to herself that I get blood work when the onc and her nurse have never had me do this before. I have blood drawn, as I said, at the time I get zometa, and it has always been good so far, no problems.

I am a bit perplexed and wondered what your experience is.

Hi DivineMrsM -  I have never had lab work done on the day I get scans (just had bone scan and ct scans yesterday - no labs drawn) and I've been getting scans at least every 4 months for 3 years.  However - since I am getting labs drawn at least once a month for the past 3 years (and more frequently since being on a clinical trial) they could refer to those results to determine if it was ok to do the scans??  I do always get blood work done before the zometa infusion.  They always check liver and kidney function before the infusion.

My onc has me get bloodwork a week before my scheduled CTs, so about every 4 months. I know he's checking my tumor markers to see if there has been any change. He said if he sees change there, he has a reason to order the PET instead of the CT (insurance issue). This has been going on for the past year or so.

My neuro onc also has me complete bloodwork the week before my brain MRIs, every 6 months. That has been going on for the past 2 years.

Ms Divine, I think I can answer this question since I am a CT tech. The protocol for lab work prior to a scan is not determined by your Dr. It is actually set by the radiologist that reads the scans at the facility. Each facility decides their own protocols. For a long time where I worked required BUN and Creat, for anyone over 55. Then it was dropped to 50. The CT department requires it but the order has to come from your Dr. So if you were in the age requirement and showed up for a scan without labs being done, we would stop, call your Dr, have them put a order in, send you down to the lab. Typically if you have had labs within 30 days, they can use them. The older you get, the more at risk everyone is for the renal functions to decrease. They just want to make sure they are working well enough to filter that contrast back out of your body quickly. Hope that helps.

Divine - I get blood drawn every month and always before pet scan. My mo has been doing it for 5years. I get pet scans every 3 months and assumed every one did. We went through a period where they would only do ct and bone scans, but then my mo pointed out my metasis was found in a rare place and he thought the pet scan would show first if it happened again. I knew they always carefully check liver and kidney functions before scan.

I get a CBC(complete blood count) every week to check my white count because I'm on Ibrance.  On the fourth week I also get a CMP(complete metabolic panel) and CA27.29 tumor marker.  They don't even check creatine or BUN.  Generally, I'm getting CT scans every three months.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. Kandy, your CT tech insight helps a lot. I am in my late 50s, so checking the blood prior to scans makes sense. Its just that all these years of scanning, the drawing of blood prior to the scan has never been an issue. It is like they dropped the ball and just now picked it up without me even knowing! I have the blood draw paper from the doctor, so I will go locally to get the bloodwork done sometime during the week prior to going for the scans.

    Thanks again, everyone!
