Pimple on breast

Hi all,

I've been lurking in these forums the past few days as I recently have some changes to one of my breasts and am absolutely worried sick. A couple of weeks ago I noticed something on my left nipple that looked like a pimple -- it protruded just a little bit from the surface and looked to be filled with yellow pus. I thought it was just that -- a pimple-- but after having it for a little longer than I'm comfortable with, I scheduled a dr. appt. this past Wednesday. The OB/GYN said that it does look like a pimple, but it isn't sore and doesn't itch. I was also concerned that the breast it was on was larger than the other (potential swelling), but she said that was not the case. She recommended I put hydrocortisone cream on it, apply a warm compress, and return in 1 week (so I'm a few days from a follow-up). It doesn't seem to be going down. I also have occasionally acne on my breasts, but I've never had anything appear on my nipple. I was very concerned, but the dr. said it probably was just a pimple since I'm younger (33), don't have a rash or an orange-peel appearance to my breast, or any pain/itching. I'm wrecked with worry because I've been Googling and have come across Paget's and inflammatory breast cancer as possible diagnoses. There were no palpable lumps on either of my breasts, but I know that there are several types of cancers that don't present with lumps at all.

At any rate, has anyone had this experience before? Is there anything I should look out for or be aware to keep a check on this? If it's still there on Wednesday and the dr. sends me away, should I seek out a second opinion?

I waffle back and forth on whether my left breast is swollen. My left breast is slightly larger than my right normally and the dr. thought there wasn't a significant size discrepancy.

Thank you all for any advice or insight. As I mentioned, I've had pimples on my breasts before, but never one on my nipple. The color of this varies from yellow to white and it does look like it is filled with pus. I know I shouldn't mess with it or try to pop it since that could actually cause an infection.

You thought it looked like a typical pimple. Your doctor looked at it and confirmed it is a pimple. Why are you concerned it is anything else, besides the fact the pimple justhappens to be on the skin of your breast instead of your face? Breasts have skin just like the rest of you. If it were on your chin would you worry you have cancer?

I am also worried because now the color of the areola and nipple in that breast are just slightly different from my other breast. It seems a darker pink and the nipple is definitely redder. I'm a great worrier when it comes to any change in my body, no matter how small. Again, there seems to be a difference in size to me as well. I go back to the doctor on Wednesday, so further tests will be done then if needed. I don't want to be a difficult patient, but I do want to be completely sure that this is something benign and normal.

batse - we are not doctors and none of us can diagnosis you over the internet. It's a good plan that you are seeing your doctor. That's who you need to consult with.

Update: I am scheduled for an ultrasound soon. It looks like it is filled with yellow colored fluid. I am worried because my nipple on that breast is also redder than the other. I now have another red spot that looks like a pimple on the breast outside of the areola. The doctor said she really wasn't sure what the lesion/bump on the nipple was but that ultrasound would help point the way toward a diagnosis and what needed to be done. I know it could be a number of benign things, ranging from dermatitis, sebaceous cysts, adenomas, or a clogged gland/duct, but Paget's is always in the back of my mind. Send good thoughts -- thank you.

Update: Mammogram and ultrasound were normal. This is believed to be something related to the skin rather than the breast. My next stop is a dermatologist who will assess the lesion on the nipple (and I guess either take it off or scrape some cells from it). My areola is reddish on the affected breast, but I am hoping that is from the mammography (had to put a small paddle on the device and really squish things to get a good image of the area in question!)

Will probably get in to a dermatologist this week. The nipple looks scaly to me (and is redder than the other) but dr. did not think there was any chance I had Paget's.
