sentinel node did not pick up dye, why?

I need our radiologist perhaps to answer this question. But my pathology only one node picked up the dye which turned out to be negative and another close by node did not pick up dye and was positive. My surgeon removed it as it felt firm. Has 4.5 mm cancer in it. They only removed two nodes.

Wont have a follow up appt. for two weeks so cannot ask my doctor this question

Question is, if this positive node is choked by cancer, does that mean the whole chain upstream from it is too?  I am assuming the negative node is on a different chain.

Anyone have input?  I think I'm starting to freak myself out again.......will it ever end????

    Teresa,
I was node neg at the time of surgery, but when the pathology came back, it showed an 8mm spot of micro metastasis. Micromets are iffy from what I understand.
My breast surgeon told me she saw it as my lymph nodes doing their job. My RO said "8mm isn't exactly small". My BS didn't want to do an axillary node dissection and I was fine with that. I know you had a DIEP Flap recently so I am guessing you won't have rads, right? But you'll have systemic hormone therapy? Hope this is helpful.

that is really helpful falconor, thank you!!

and no I didn't have rads (yet) but am truly Er/PR positive so will most likely be having hormone therapy

well found out today that the sentinel node DID pick up the dye and it was the one that was cancerous. the other node he removed that did not pick up dye was non cancerous. So now have to decide on whether or not to have ALND vs just radiation.  thing is , I don't know how many more could be cancerous!
