Diagnosis at 31 and pregnant

Hi there,

I am 31 and 15 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I was just diagnosed with IDC. Preliminary biopsy results indicate that it is node-negative but multi-focal and about 1 cm. It is also 'intermediate-high' grade.

I am terrified but trying to arm myself with knowledge to have the confidence to tackle this. I would love to hear experiences from or about other women who had a diagnosis while pregnant. I meet with a surgeon on a Monday to see about next steps. I am looking to arm myself with some hope in the meantime. I have already received some great positive messages here and hope to collect more while I am in limbo

I am deeply sorry you have this journey whilst on your beautiful journey towards motherhood. That said, you can do this and so can baby. There is a protocol for pregnant women and their survival is in NO WAY compromised by being pregnant. At least that is what I have read. You are awfully young too, so you may want a genetic test to see if this will influence your choices going forward. I am so hurt when I see young women battling this disease...I am old, so you kind of expect these things somewhere along the line...but 31!!!! It would have shocked me as well. At 31 I had a three year old and it never even occurred to me about cancer and especially breast cancer...something is terribly wrong. My heart thoughts are with you and your family....and baby of course.

I am SO SORRY for you during what should be such a happy time. A young woman was pregnant and going through chemo--we got to know her when my sister was going through chemo. She delivered a healthy baby and is doing well two years later!

Sending all my best...and please check out a website that many young women find helpful called Young Survival...

I had pain in my breast that the ob/gyn ignored at my postpartum visit. Now a year later I find I have IDC. Probably had the cancer already before I delivered. Scheduled for BMX this coming Monday. Baby is still nursing so I feel super badly for her. Only need the left off but I am being proactive to take the right to hopefully lesson the chance of recurrence since I am ER+ and PR+ HER2- (although my surgeon says there is no evidence to support this). Thankful to finally get it diagnosed. You are in my prayers for peace and wisdom.

Thankful for all the comments and sad to hear about other similar stories. It's only been just over a week but my emotions have settled somewhat and I have hope from reading other experiences on this community board.

I have a lumpectomy surgery scheduled for Wednesday and so far the doctors have said we'll have to wait and see if I'm a good candidate for chemo depending on the surgery results. I am hoping for negative nodes but preparing for the worst scenario as my cancer is multi focal and there was some calcifications found on the mammogram done last week. Largest lump is 1 cm and it is also ER and PR positive, HER2 negative - which I understand is 'good'.

This makes me hopeful, but it seems chemotherapy is most probably likely from what I've read, since I can't start radiation or hormone therapy until after I deliver. So would it even be feasible to only have the lumpectomy and delay all other treatment I until after the baby arrives (end of October)? I feel like I should just be preparing for chemo...but i can't help but daydream about the possibility of getting away with only surgery for now and riding out the rest of my pregnancy without further treatment, relatively 'normally'.
