Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?

I hear that older freezers really pull electrical current. Despite that we have one in our basement. Our refrigerator is small and we really need additional freezer space for the veggies and fruits from our trees.
This morning was totally sodden and gloomy. About 2pm the sun came out and it's been pretty since. They predict rain again tonight. I want a day warm enough to be comfortable outside with a coat so I can go to the plant nursery to admire their flowers.

Got to manage to get up early tomorrow morning, DH has first eye for cataract surgery. Hope his BP is OK, so they dont postpone. He seems to have White Coat syndrome. then the second eye in 2 weeks. Beautiful 2 days here. Got to get to bed, night!

Oh Ducky, don't you just hate that? Are they those tiny little ones called "piss-ants"??? Or was that just what my Dad called them? I used to make a chalk-line, all around where I thought they came in... But they were already in the bag, or just crawling on it, trying to figure out how to get in there? And I'm pretty sure, that if you ASK those ants, they will know to go find your "stuff" on the other side of the kitchen! Won't they?
I put most stuff like that into plastic sealed containers I get from the Dollar store... Okay, now I'm going to go through my cupboard/pantry to see what I can find in there..
I KNOW I'm not going to BAKE a lot of cake-mixes anymore, unless an army shows up at my house... but you have to buy stuff when it is on sale, right? Or else, like my folks.. you have to buy things in case of an air-raid, or some catastrophe that is, or might be looming.... and you can't leave your house for weeks....
We just have a little freezer, on top of our small refrigerator.... And even IT has stuff in there that has been there way too long....
But I DID go through the refrigerator, and found something in the back, that I didn't know what it was... So it went in my Compost barrel....... I threw the old vitamins I put in a bucket of water, to dissolve.... and water the tomato plants with it!
Carole, you use "pine-straw"..? I just have old dead pine needles, that I sweep up & use in the compost...keeps it "light" so it doesn't pack down...
Jackie, a couple months ago, we used a "cooler" outdoors, to hold the "over-flow".... Hah! It stayed cold enough out there, we could have shut our freezer AND refrigerator off for a couple months!
We just have to learn not to stock-up.... even when it IS on sale!

One of my biggest beautiful favorites:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves,
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.
- Marianne Williamson -
Hmm, we may be seeing ants before long. We seem to have the biggest problem with them in the beginning if it has rained too much. We think they come in to get out of the rain and are capable of mental telepathy -- which is why so many of their friends come -- long after it has quit raining. The funny thing is -- they never seem to get into the food. They still are a big nuisance to us anyway. We have tried several things but usually end up with some ant traps because it becomes such a hassle every time you want to cook to look for the possibility of a 'line' of ants to be dealt with first.
Hmmm, I have boxed cakes in my freezer. I just put the whole box in a freezer bag and throw them in. I do not like box cakes -- I prefer the old fashioned home-made cake flavor -- but do keep these box cakes because I do think the 'dump' type cakes taste just fine. When I make peach dump cake I always use Butter Pecan cake. It has a yummy flavor -- most people want my recipe but it is not a special recipe -- just a slightly different flavor box cake. I also keep on hand ( have used them all just now ) Angel Food box cake to make the lo-cal cake. Just the Angel Food cake and a can of crushed pineapple, juice and all, and bake at temp and time the box says. Some people put in a tsp. of vanilla -- I usually don't bother. I'm really going for simple I guess. So, my freezer, almost as close to my fridge as Chevy's does come in handy for things like that.
I really do keep too much and just am going to have to learn not to do that. Yrs. ago --- when my thyroid nearly blew up ( for the 7 yrs. before dx ) I had a very difficult time eating. That did something to me -- my brain anyway. My brain always thought I was about to starve I guess and once the thyroid was dealt with I customarily over-bought food. I finally got that settled down, but not totally I guess. So right now -- we are going to be purchasing very little. I don't wish to cram up either the freezer or fridge -- and we will save money in the long run.
Time to take out the storm door and put in the screen door on the deck. The temps look like they are trying to get consistent and even if we have some off days -- we will do what we always do and keep the inside door closed. It is always though a good signal to me when we can have the screen door.
Hope you all have a gorgeous day. Nice sun outside and we have to make a trip to Mt. Vernon today so I think I have a Garlic Burger in my future. Last time we were there I ordered something else and was sorry. It was okay -- but just not that scrumptious garlic. Before that I always ordered the ??Chicago-style hotdog. It has two nice sized peppers on it ( and dh would often give me his too ) and that was my standard. I know Steak & Shake has a lot of good food for a fast-food, but being a creature of habit I tend to order what I know I will enjoy -- and also not to feel that I've wasted my money for something I didn't even like.

bonnets - One of the residents at my PCP gave me this advice about "false" high BP reads: make sure that the cuff is large enough (if that's what is being used) and your arm is at the arm at the level of your heart. Have asked for a re-take more than once and when arm was at level of heart, BP was fine. Best wishes for the cataract surgery - Have had both eyes done & extremely pleased with only needing store-bought readers.
-
Did fine, in at 8:00 out by 10:00. Sleeping after we got home and ate lunch, second eye 2 weeks from today. Hardest thing is all the eye drops before and after!
WE don't have ant problems and have the exterminator every month,. We live in a log home and borer bees and Woodpeckers are our nemisis! The woodpeckers come when they hear the Bee larva inside the logs, and do a lot of damage. Last year , finally got it dealt with when we had a wildlife guy come and the exterminators changed their approach. JUst ordered Borer Bee traps, I hear work well. We will see. It was warm this week-end and I saw the bees out surveying the house. Bees and Woodpeckers say "YUMMY" when they see a log house!
-
bonnets - Agree with you about those eye drops. Luckily, DH was very good at the timing & administering. One more drop to add to the mix, possibly - Check with the Dr. re: lubricating eye drops for extra "relief" as needed. Dr. recommended & I used Refresh Optive Advanced in single-use containers - were very helpful. Dr. may have samples/coupons for you.
Living in a log house sounds lovely, except for those pesky creatures.

Had my shutters put in tthe front of the house today...a gift from my son......

BEAUTIFUL, Ducky! I LOVE the shutters, and your rooms! Your home looks like a show-home!
Going to go visit our older friend.... I've known Theresa since I was little... We lived in the same neighborhood growing up, and in 1964 moved onto the same street Theresa & Eddie lived on.... So we've always been neighbors! She lives in Assisted Living, and at 93 she is doing great! Just fun to be around someone older than us... Hah!
She can hardly see anything, uses a walker, and her one knee is KILLING her, but other than that, she is doing pretty good. Her sense of humor is something that always keeps us laughing.... And we visit "Wilma & Abby".... Abby is a miniature poodle, and we love her! They live in the next room to Theresa.... So I always bring fresh Chicken pieces for Abby, and we visit with Wilma before seeing Theresa....
Sometimes it's depressing, seeing the older folks in there, but you just gotta thank GOD that we aren't there yet...... It could sure be worse....... She still gets her hair done, every week there, and her nails & a pedicure! Goes on the little bus with a few other gals to breakfast or lunch, and they always have entertainment..... even "Happy Hour".... Hah! She plays Bingo, and is so excited when she wins a dollar! She LOVES it, mostly because she can hardly see the numbers!
Okay... It's getting light out, so gotta go see what I can do out in my gardens....

The shutters are lovely, Ducky

Whatever else you do or forebear, impose upon yourself the task of happiness; and now and then abandon yourself to the joy of laughter. And however much you condemn the evil in the world, remember that the world is not all evil; that somewhere children are at play, as you yourself in the old days; that women still find joy in the stalwart hearts of men, and that men, treading with restless feet their many paths, may yet find refuge from the storms of the world in the cheerful house of love. - Max Ehrmann

It does look like a show house Ducky -- so pretty --- so un-like mine where nothing matches and something is always laying around where it doesn't belong. Okay --- I only do this to make myself really HUMAN. Well, it sounds good doesn't it???? Sort of reminds me of when my daughter came home and complained that few things in my house matched -- but she wasn't complaining all that much that she and hubby had a nice bedroom with t. v. and meals on the table.
I don't mind admitting that style is not really so much my thing -- never has been along with clothing styles etc. It is just who I am. Sometimes it bothers me that I was born without that gene -- but I'm going to be 72. I have little time to morn what I don't have so I can take advantage of enjoying all that I do which is plenty.
Theresa seems to be fairly aware of this --- life is for the living. So getting your hair and nails up and down done, visiting friends and winning at Bingo seems to mean that she intends to stay in the game. Good for her --- and good for you too Chevy --- sticking with her all this time. Your a good kid you know.

Oh Ladies trust me.....I do not have the knack for home decorating......LOL.......and it is far from a showplace.....remind me to take pictues and show you what it looks like when I just run in and drop things anywhere...........I have way to much "stuff".......when I sold the shore house I had so much which I gave most of it away.....my grandkids took stuff, kids some things, and I kept a few things......some things I wanated but the day we were packingit all up for the final leave I just kept saying "take it, take it,", and now I wish I had some of it back........oh well shit happens.......the one thing I wish I could have brought back to my home here was my pool....I miss that most of all....
-
Old picture........the man is gone for 26 years now......and the chubby lady is many years older........LO
-
Huge pool. No wonder you miss it.

Oh my gosh -- what a pretty day yesterday and today doesn't look too bad either. The doors and windows are open already -- by 8 a.m. and the fans are on. If this keeps up we will have to call our furnace man and have him bring out the new a/c unit that goes to the furnace we had him install at the beginning of winter. He talked about turning up here early and I thought it was sort of silly but I see that he was far more right than I was. We do try and 'stall' using our a/c till the last minute. Still, the furnace has been so 'economical' that I imagine the a/c will be as well --- so I may not MAKE myself get to the 'torture' limit this time.
Needed to stop what I was doing to help Dh with our yard yesterday. He struggles at times, but a lifelong habit of being a slow started. I'm up and at them in the a.m. usually burning through lots of tasks -- dh, well uh -- not so much. He gets too late a start which is why I guess we are dealing still with some of last yrs. leaves. There are a couple of small patches now so I think/hope he can get on with things. I will have to go out and pick up a lot of the small limbs, twigs and misc. sticks that made it to the ground.
Had the carpenter over yesterday. He is going to likely put a new roof on our screen room ( metal ) as it has leaked for some time. Dh patches it but how many yrs. can you get away with that. It's time to 'do it right'. There have always been fiberglass panels up there since the day we bought the house and we liked the fact that the room itself stayed brighter w/o a 'real' roof -- but things change and we need to change too.
You'd never believe that rain is due tomorrow -- it says likely the morning hours. We are going to an Easter Brunch with my former employers and her brother and his wife. So my ham is sitting 'defrosted' in the fridge which is okay. It's good food and since we look on all off our days as "gifts" we can eat ham anytime we like.
Hope you all have a gorgeous day.

Wren....that is only 1/2 of the pool......yes I do miss it.....but it was time to let the house guy....my husband only got to spend 6 years in the house he dreamed of and had built.....I stayed for 24 more years.....it was a summer home, and only was used for 3 months, and only weekends...when he was alive we were down all the time.....
This is a full shot of it.

Your pool is so beautiful Ducky..... DD in Orlando has one.... they live on a golf-course, and it's such a beautiful area. They don't use the pool much.... But it was always her dream, to have a pool & live on a golf-course... Hah! I remember when I was young.... I was diving off the high-board.... & nailed it.... but my bathing suit came down to my waist !!! I thought I would DIE of embarrassment ! Actually I don't think anyone even noticed.... I got it pulled up..... then attached the little neck strap....
Did you have one of those little robo-things that runs around and cleans the bottom? They have a screen surrounding the pool area.... That helps a lot.
-
Yes we did ....it did a lot of the work......on for a couple hours every morning, and the work was done......it was called a Poloris...it would run around the pool on its own and pick up any debree that gotin the pool overnight........it was from 3 feet to 8 1/2.....just a great pool......
But that was then, and this is now.........bye pool.........LOL
-
You are only 3 ft. 81/2 inches tall Oh wait.... you mean DEEP! Sheesh! I thought my Daughter and I were short! She is 4ft. 11" tall.... I am much taller.... 5 ft, 1 ".... Hah!
-
You could actually swim for exercise in that pool. Most of the private ones are too small and the public ones have too much chlorine. Houston had neighborhood parks with small pools. We would go home, turn on the fans, and head for the pool. By the time we got home the house was much cooler.

Back from London, and (pleasantly) exhausted. Whirlwind trip: only 4 full days, bookended by a travel day at either end. Hitting the sack soon in order to be up & out of the house to host my brunch guests at the Hancock at noon.
Figured I’d stop by to mention something of interest to those of us on this thread: CR (normally not inclined to recommend meds instead of just lifestyle changes) is recommending statins even for those of us without heart disease or even just mildly at risk (Framingham score between 7.5-10%). And Bob just showed me a new NEJM article recommending statins as a treatment for ER+ bc—either preventive for older women not yet diagnosed, but to lower recurrence risk and slow tumor growth for those of us already diagnosed. The same metabolic pathway (a “cholesterol metabolite”) that raises LDL cholesterol also activates estrogen receptors and stimulates tumor growth. High BMI may predispose us to ER+ bc more by that process than by providing too many “hormone factories” in the form of fat cells. Guess it’s time for that talk with my PCP.

It is wonderful how much time good people spend fighting the devil. If they would only expend the same amount of energy loving their fellow men, the devil would die in his own tracks of ennui.

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter today. Hope you are having the sun to cheer you and good friends and family to further make this a very joyful day.

You too Jackie buddy.... Love you! xoxo

I was on statins for several years before getting BC. Perhaps it made it smaller or delayed the appearance. I take them because of an awful family history on both sides. And I have high blood pressure (under control on meds).

Wrenn - my small subdivision still has a neighborhood pool. We've hired a teacher the last five summers to teach water aerobics classes for adults only. It's not a big pool, so we limit the classes to 25 - and close the pool during the classes - Saturday mornings, Mon & Wed evenings. It's great exercise.
