Advice Please on SSDI
so several weeks ago I received the papers that my disability was up for review. I filled them out and sent them back. A few weeks later I received more papers to fill out and my husband also received a packet. They were filled out and sent in. Today I receive a letter stating I must go to see a Dr at their request. I looked it up and the lady I'm seeing is a psychiatrist. Has anyone else had to do this? I have had so many things to happen lately that I do feel like I'm losing my mind. I have a feeling they are fixing to deny my social security. This really stresses me out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Kandy, I sent you a PM.
-
Kandy, I often feel like I am losing my mind and I haven't been through nearly as much as you yet. That is an odd request if you ask me, considering you are only renewing what you were already granted for a very real and debilitating disease. I would go see a Social Worker at your center if possible ASAP to see if they have any insight into this intrusive ridiculous directive. Hang in there Kandy, things have got to settle down soon.
-
Oh I can't wait until the SSA sends a psychiatrist to interview me. If they don't believe I am crazy, I'll send them to Shetland, who will confirm that I exercise like a crazy woman.
Seriously, your SSDI is based on your MBC diagnosis. It's a benefit based on life expectancy, not physical ability or anything else. As a pool, people with MBC are unlikely to live long enough to get their expected SS retirement benefit, so you effectively draw down on it early through SSDI.
You have MBC, you paid for this insurance for exactly this situation, and I can't see it being taken away.

Excellent excellent SSDI forum with knowledgable people to guide you and answer all kinds of situations. Highly recommend reading/posting there..
-
Lol, Zarovka.
-
how much more can your plate handle. Ugh.
I am not a Ssdi specialist but I thought all stage IV patients automatically are approved on a fast track. And since this is not a new application I don't see their issue.
Hopefully someone else will come along with more info

I've seen stage IV people there. They are fast tracked but not necessarily approved right away. It still depends on factors such as age, ability to work (many stage IVs do still work), etc.
Seriously, this is the best forum to read and ask. People that used to work there, mods that are in the trenches and on top of laws and regs- all who really know the intracacies of SSDI/SSI. I've lived on that bored for 2 years now and still don't know near enough about how this works at the various stages of the approval process. You will receive advice and info on how to navigate the process, etc. I'd hate for any of you guys to get denied because of some small mistake. Please check that forum out. I was approved off the bat but not for cancer because I found that forum and lots of help and tips. Best wishes to you all,

Kandy,
We have heard of this review before. I think it was ZEAK, though I probably have the screen name wrong. She was told that she had to have a doctor review, and like you, it was not a medical oncologist but a psychiatrist. She was denied further benefits, which she then fought vigorously, including calls to her representatives. In the end, she was reinstated. She has not been active on these boards for a long time, and only popped in to ask for SSDI advice, much like you.
Good luck with this nastiness.

Artista thanks for the link. I've registered but not gotten an email back from them yet. I am really stressing about this. I do not understand how they can deny me when I'm so much worse off than I was in 2009. They approved me then. I havea lot more mets, on chemo, and have had a pelvis reconstruction. How do I not qualify? They are going to drive me crazy.
-
Kandy- Hang in there. You have to fight and keep appealing if you get denied. In the meanwhile you can read that forum until they confirm your membership so you can post. You can search cancer and see what threads come up with folks talking about it. Best wishes.
-
This just steams the hell out of me! As if you have the time or energy to have to fight for this along with everything else. Where is the compassion, cooperation, professional integrity.... God, I could go on and on.
Z is right (and hilarious). You paid into this pool through SS, you are taking it early and statistically probably for fewer years than the standard SS, there should be NO problem getting renewed.
-
my understanding is stage 4 is an automatic disability acceptance.
-
It is not automatic approval, Meow. Again, go to the link I provided for anything and everything you want to know how SSDI works.
-
Meow, Nope. Not automatic at all. Having a mets diagnosis fast tracks you for review, but does not guarantee benefits.
(I really wish people would stop spreading this fallacy.)

Kandy~ I was approved for conditions that were unrelated to my cancer before I was even diagnosed, I went in front of their psychologist and I thought it went badly, but he ended up agreeing with me. I strongly suggest placing. Emphasis on the cognitive areas of how the chemo and your treatment effects your ability to make decisions and react or keep pace like a normal person who isn't on heavy medication for cancer pain. I didn't have cancer at the time but was on a large amount of pain medication. His report agreed with me that I was not cognitively able to hold a job or report to anyone or communicate successfully while onMeds. Take your pain medication before you see him, don't lie, but obviously the medication will have it's delaying effects and he will see it. After that I went I front of one of their judges. audjucation judge, my hearing took less then five minutes. There were people in there for hearings in designer jeans and nails done to the nines, gold bling jewelry, it was quite eye opening to why this process is the way it is. I cannot really imagine them not approving you honestly. They do this to weed out the people who are just trying to play the system. Your medical records will speak for themselves. I was approved on the spot after that hearing. Last year I received a review notice as well, at the end of the letter, it said we reviewed your medical records and we do not need to review anything at this time. So. They are aware, and can access those medical records. I honestly think this is all procedure. At least with what I have experienced. As a whole,. The entire time from start to finish was 18 months total. But they give you back pay to when you are entitled. Just don't give up!!! That is what they want you to do. ~M~

I'm hoping there is a light at the end of this tunnel. I called my local social security office and they gave me the number to the determination services. After speaking with several people, they ended up letting me speak to the supervisor of the person that is reviewing my case. After speaking with her, she canceled my appointment and said she would expedite my claim. I explained to her that I had progression, had chemo every week, was taking narcotics. I told her I did have anxiety/depression but who wouldn't in my situation. So hopefully my claim will go through and this will be one less thing I need to worry with. I will let y'all know the outcome. Thanks for hanging in there with me and for the advice

Kandy - the claims are not approved automatically for stage 4, but you will be a PRIORITY. There is variance by state, but you will get approved as Micmel said so well.:) Thank you for the link Artista. Each year all of us should review our Social Security estimated benefits to consider; drawing early at 62 (which I am planning), waiting until 65 (lol unless you get MBC at an older age) or claiming SSDI which you can do at an earlier age after proving your case. You may also use a lawyer, but that will cost $, but it also gets you to the top of the line and weeds out loons with the Gucci bags and bling in there ahead of you as Micmel described. lol Please keep us posted. You are a lovely lady and deserve the best. Lots of support for you here. Here's a link to NC claims.

Kandy,
I used to help my clients with SSDI determinations, hearings and reviews, so would be able to help you in that regard if you'd like ( I could walk you through the areas they will be evaluating so you understand them better). Just PM me if you need any help. I'm an LCPC (licensed clinical professional counselor) and am very familiar with the criteria. So sorry that this is taking up any of your emotional resources right now. If it doesn't sail through, I'm happy to help. I also know a good SSDI lawyer in the area.
-
Thank you susan for clarifying that this is not automatic. I know I read that early on and while I will work as long as possible, I would be willing to bet that many ladies have read that fallacy and quit on the spot before really checking out the facts. Yes, thanks for the link Artista (nice screen name!) I plan to investigate this issue in depth before making any definitive moves.
good luck Kandy, I hope you get back to a place that you can relax just a little and feel better. My heart hurts for you right now....

I was approved for SSD 6 years ago. 2 years ago I got a letter stating that I was doing better and my benefits were cancelled.Never got the memo I was cured. I got all the paperwork filled out by my doctor and was reinstated a month later.
I wonder if there isn't an auto (computer) generated review, or some clerk who is making the decisions. Seriously, once we are stage iv, it should be a no brainer!
They can send me to a shrink, I will be happy to go, and let them know how EVERYTHING about this disease and the side effects from treatments.
Good luck, don't worry.
-
Ha Fitz, no kidding! I would love to bend the ear of their psychiatrist!
-
Fitz~ You're correct that they are auto generated based on their internal date entered for review, when you are accepted. I believe they run in three years, 6 years or even more if they don't think you're going to improve. Mine was 6 years. I was supposed to be reviewed in December 31,17. In early November they sent me a questionnaire, which I filled in and ran out of room to get everything was I dealing with in the allotted spaces. So it looked like a third grade pencil paper. But one month later, received another letter that basically said. Oh never mind, no need to review, as far as we can see lady, you're on your last leg. So there wasn't even another mention of another granted time until next review. I guess maybe insurance information with phrases like UM let's see.... stage four breast cancer, to the bone might be a clue that this person isn't able to return to the work force anytime soon, with lymphedema to accompany me into my every morning as well, some people have coffee. I have seven pills and lymphedema! Approved!!!! Next!
The entire process blows!! But never give up.
Rant for the day is complete. Prayers all around! ~M~
