Anyone who has had nipple bleeding.
Was yours a little or a lot? I only had a very little bit. I go in for a mammogram tomorrow, but in trying to remain calm. Please anyone who has nipple bleeding as a cancer symptom let me know. I'm hoping since I had a little then that means its something else.

I have had both. The first time, I got up in the morning and my whole tshirt I had slept in was covered with blood. After that night it slowed down considerably but continued daily. The second time, I had just a small amount of blood. The third time was also a small amount. In every case it was papillomas, I have a history of the pesky things going back 18 years. In all that time, I have had ADH a few times but no sign of cancer.

I had bloody nipple discharge (BND ) the night before my mammo and u/s . They also do both tests since I'm very dense, fibrocystic and 34 DD make sure you let them know so they can tell the radiologist, my mammo and ultrasound were both clear no problems found. The radiologist came in and told me if it happenend again I needed to see a surgeon ASAP even if was a tiny amount, well over a few days it changed color from bright red to rust colored so I went to see a surgeon. He thought it was probably nothing to worry about and I should give it a few months and if it was still bleeding then he would be willing to go in there and remove the irritated duct . But everything I read online was enough to make me nervous so I told him I wasn't cool with waiting. So I was scedueled for a duct removal had surgery 1/24. When I woke up I knew he must have found something much larger cause I was in more pain then I expected and it was 3 hrs later then I was told I'd be ready to be discharged. He stopped by and told me I had alot of junk in there and it looked suspicious so he ended up removing a 10 cm x 4.5 cm x 2 cm area. He wouldn't look me in the eye when I asked him if he thought it I'd be getting bad news. So that was a very long 4 days. Pathology report diagnosed the tissue as ADH ( atypical ductal hyperplasia ) which depending on who you ask is considered pre cancerous or pre pre cancerous. So I am VERY lucky my nipple started bleeding otherwise I never would have know trouble was brewing since my mammo and ultrasound were clear. So of course its something to be concerned about it may be nothing at all or an early warning. I will be praying you get good news hun. Try not to worry I know easier said than done There is a ton of valuable info on this site, so educate yourself and please let us know what you find out (((((hugs))))

TY for the information, I'm new here and have been having discharge for several months and finally went to my doctor in November. Still impatiently waiting for results from my MRI, (mammo and U/S were clear). Feel like my doc isn't taking this seriously and it has progressed from 2-3 times a week to everyday so I'm really nervous, stressed, etc....
Any advice what I should ask my doc if the MRI come out clear as well?
-
Hi hun
Glad you found this site . I'm pretty new here too but in a month have learned so much. I'm very concerned that this has been happening since November. I was told in January if it happened again even a tiny bit to get myself in with a surgeon ASAP my mammo & ultrasound were clear but they never tried to do a ductogram surgeon wanted to wait I said no now or ill find someone else . I do t know where you are but please get yourself into a breast surgeon or general surgeon. Blood is never a good sign I was extremely lucky I bled cause it was all precancerous when the surgeon found a good sized area of "junk". That's almost 6 months and they aren't suppose to aggravate it to make it bleed I was told not to try and express it. You are right they're not taking this seriously enough some bc only symptom is bleeding. I am so upset you have been put off this long that's not safe based on everything I've read and been told. Please please please see someone else a surgeon can figure it out usually once they're in there. Don't let them blow you off even if your MRI is fine the only 100% chance of knowing for sure is a biopsy with bloody nipple discharge that's usually done by excisional biopsy. Read as much as you can about bloody discharge from the nipple and find a surgeon or ob:gyn that can send you to one. Don't worry but get in with someone who will be proactive . Good luck please let us know how you are and who you found to get you some answers. I'd be livid by now and threatening them with malpractice suit if God forbid something is very wrong and they waited this long you deserve better care than this wtf??? -
The first time it happened, I was sitting at the table eating breakfast and my nightgown felt wet. I looked down and there were two huge bloodstains on the front. I was bleeding from my left nipple, but it stopped as quickly as it started.
Then it went away (no spontaneous bleeding, that is) until I started having diagnostic tests run, where they had to express some discharge to locate the exact duct to study.I usually got just a tiny spot.
When I had my ductogram, the cannula wouldn't go in all the way, and the Radiologist kept pulling it out and pushing it in, apologizing the whole time. (Didn't matter to me, it didn't hurt at all.)
Finally she got a bit of dye in, taped the cannula down, and took me over to the mammo machine for a mammogram. I bled all over the plates!!!
After that, no more discharge at all.
After seven different diagnostic tests, they found DCIS (non-invasive cancer) and a tiny microinvasion of IDC (invasive ductal cancer) in the left breast.
It was multi-focal, meaning in several places, and very small. I decided on a bilateral mastectomy with implant reconstruction. I did not need chemo or radiation.

Mine hasn't been every day it was just once. I went for a sonogram yesterday and they said they saw nothing and just wanted to chalk it up to an infection, but they didn't give me antibiotics. The doctor had ordered a mammogram but the radiologist said I was too young for it. I'm not sure if I should just be complacent and accepting or push even more. Thanks to everyone for your replies, it's nice to know I'm not the only one and I'm sorry y'all are going through your trials

Thanks so much for the advice. I also live in Colorado. I have always liked my OB/GYN but this entire process has been so frustrating and stressful I'm looking for another doc - just hope I don't have to start all over. When I first went in the nurse took her 2days sending in my orders for the mammo. Went in for the mammo (hospital not doc office) the mammo tech left me sitting in the waiting room for 20 min, then I ran upstairs to doc office so I wasn't late for my Halo Test only to sit in the waiting room for an hour b/c they double booked the room and there were two ultrasounds ahead of me, when they saw me sitting there crying they finally moved me to an exam room, then had to go back down to the hospital for the U/S and then waited for more than a week for the results. Had to call 3 times to get the nurse to get my orders sent down for the ductogram and now waiting for the MRI results. I feel like they don't care about me b/c I'm not having a baby my boob is just bleeding.
Elle do you mind if I PM you about doctors/surgeons. Not sure where in Colorado you are but if we are close that could be helpful. I am so glad I found this forum, wish I would have found it sooner. When this all started happening I did some online reading and got very scared so tried to stay away from reading online but now I've reached a point I'm just mad and want to get this taken care off. It may not be important to them (doc and nurse) but it's my life and very important to me. I'm 46 and have 3 wonderful children (25,8,5) and a DH and I don't want to have them loose me.
Thank you so much.
Andielion no matter your age you should still get the mammogram. There are very young people with BC.
-
There is a blog you might want to read over on wordpress.com
its called I'm 25 and my boobs are trying to kill me. Yes you are young and its rare but it does happen. You know your body better than any doctor ever will , so you listen to how you feel , you have every right to have a mammogram. Age shouldn't be a factor , see another dr please. And you are right if it was an infection you would have been put on antibiotics. I've never heard of a breast infection going away on its own. They usually make you very sick , fever pain redness etc. sorry they aren't taking you seriously. I'd find someone else good luck hun. -
Finally got to talk to the nurse (after nearly yelling at the very sweet receptionist - not her fault but I am so dang frustrated)
MRI came back negative - meaning they saw nothing, they don't know what's up and said "maybe it's something in the nipple" so suggested I see a surgeon. I still know nothing. Going to call my Gen Dr and make sure she approves of the surgeons they gave me the contact info on and definilty getting a new OB/GYN.
When I talked to her (nurse) I was on my way home from a meeting and pretty much melted so stopped by the new (very cool and big) Micheals for some retail therapy.
I know it's good they didn't see anything on the MRI but I just want to know what's going on, it doesn't just bleed for no reason and it is not an occasional thing, it's everyday. Not a lot but still every day and I have to wear nursing pads.
Thanks for the advice and support.

I had bloody discharge from my right nipple. It started around Thanksgiving 2012 and I went for a mamogram that was clear but my doctor thought I should go for a breast MRI too, I did and that was also clear. At this point in beginning of Jan. my doctor suggested surgery because I was still having the bloody discharge. The discharge was annoying and also the blood in it was not very red more of a rust color. The Dr. said not to worry it was probably just a duct that needed to come out and that would be that. I had my surgery a week ago and at that time the Dr. said he removed the duct but the duct had two growths in it. So this has me worried I am still waiting on the pathology report I go Monday for the results. I am staying positive but getting anxious as the time nears to find out what the results are. The reason I wrote is because when you have discharge and your mamogram and MRI are fine is does not mean there is nothing there. I am so glad my dr. felt I needed surgery even though at the time he didn't seem concerned but felt that it was not worth any risk. You have to be your own advocate and be strong and if one dr. says it's nothing find another one. The surgery is over now and I feel good and know I did the best thing for my health and hopefully it is benign...
-
I as finally able to see a surgeon and he as shocked no one had take a sample of the discharge so he did. Got the lab results back as blood, possible papaloma and atypical cells so he is recommending removing the duct(s) as well. Surgery is next Friday, hoping it all comes back fine. I think I'm more nervous about the actual surgery and recovery.
Sandy - hoping yours come back benign - keep us posted. Our situations sound very similar.

I was diagnosed in September 2012 with breast cancer. Two tumours in my right breast and one in a lymph node (axillary.) Against my doctor's and oncologist and surgeon's wishes, I have not had surgery or chemotherapy. I've been on Tamoxifen for almost the entire time since my diagnosis and have been using an alternative treatment. My last visit with my oncologist went well. She told me she was "amazed" my cancer has not spread out of control in the last year and that my tumours have in fact, shrunk! That was so wonderful to hear. I just had my shower today and while drying off, noticed a small amount of blood coming from my right nipple. I'm very freaked out about it. One thing I should point out, is that I shower or bather at least once a day, I'm a clean person. I noticed a while ago (few months) that because my nipple is slightly inverted, dirt can build up around it, sort of like in your belly button! I used some q-tips and peroxide and did a clean up job after my shower and noticed a clump of dirt had built up around it. Can't explain why so much, maybe in hot weather, I have to clean around the area more frequently. Maybe from sweating in the summer, it attracts more dirt. I see my family doctor on Monday (today's Friday) and will ask him what he thinks is going on. I think it's a matter of not being very diligent about cleaning around my nipple, that and the fact that I just took a long train trip and was unable to shower for a few days. I will certainly be doing more reading about this. I really don't want to freak myself out unneccesarily, I'll find out soon enough. Like I said, my last visit about 1 month ago to my oncologist went very well. Has anyone else with an inverted nipple due to tumours experienced the build up of dirt and bleeding?

I had bleeding from my right nipple last year and I went to the doctor and she tested the discharge and said it was nothing to worry about. So I had it again about 2 weeks ago and I have already had a mammogram that was clear.I then had an ultra sound that showedv a palpable mass so now I go and get an MRI this week.I have a dense breast and I wondered if that is why the Mammogram was clear. I was a little worried. I'm 59 years old. I has been reading about this and a lot of the information says this is mostly a benign condition. Any thoughts? -
Your Story
Hi,
I'm 36 and have been with the love of my life for 16 years now, we have 4Children , 2girls 14 & 12 & 2 boys 10 & 8. I had my last child in 2006, he was 4 months old and I wasn't breast feeding. I was feeling my right breast to see if the milk was dried up and bright red blood came from my nipple. I immediately went for a mammogram and ultra sound and they didn't see anything abnormal but I was told to consult a surgeon anyway. I can't remember the name of the procedure he was doing, I know that he removed my ducts and a small piece of tissue from the bottom of my breast. They tested it and everything was benign. I was told to come back every 6 months for mammogram and ultra sounds, I have dense breasts so they always do an ultra sound to be sure. Everything was going good until one day I woke up and It looked like I had a spider bite on my breast., I went to my doctor she thought it was the same thing. I started to do research because in my gut it just didn't seem right. The bite or what ever was didn't go away fir months and I got 2 more. I got a second opinion on my films ans they say the look fine. I'm still not satisfied, on my breast it looks red blotchy under my skin, sometimes it feels like it's in fire, sometimes I get shooting pains. Or a dull ache inside my breast. I don't understand why neither if these hospitals did a biopsy? With my symptoms and history. They aren't seeing a lump so they are assuming nothing is wrong. I'm scared. I'm young and that's another thing ,they go on which is so wrong young people get cancer all the time. I'm neot that young. But I don't want to die over someone NIT taking the time to ease my mind and find out fir sure if tgere is something wrong instead if getting slips every time I go that say PROBABLY benign!! I need help and advice. Should I consult a surgeon and ask for a biopsy. I don't know what to do and I'm scared. My mom passed away at the he if 40, car accident so I don't have her to talk to. It's just John and I and the kids. Please someone point me in the right direction. I don't want to fall through the cracks because of shitty insurance or drs that are to busy to care. Thanks for listening. Rinne
I am on a quest to figure out what is wrong, I hope and pray that this is something minor, but either way I know that I will get the word out about IBC (inflammatory breast cancer) since there is hardly anything about it on the web or spoken aboit amongst women and men, friends doctors and family. We must be in tune with our body's and our voices must be loud and clear. I will not stop or back down until I know what is causing these symptoms and pain. I pray you do the same. Be an advocate for your self so we don't have to hear about one more tragedy. I may not matter to my insurance company or to doctors but I do after to myself and the ones whom love . FIGHT

Hi BeAware! And welcome to Breastcancer.org. We're sorry is this worry that brought you here.
As you can see, this thread is not active since Oct 29, 2013, so it's possible that you don't get many responses here. Also, as we understand, you've not been diagnosed, so the best place for you to post and share your story would be the Not Diagnosed But Worried forum, here: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/83
Also, in our main site you can learn more about Inflammatory Breast Cancer and, if you decide to pursue a second or third opinion, here's more information on how to do that: Getting a Second Opinion, including why, where and when to get them, and what to expect.
Hope this helps!

As the Mods said this is a thread that hasn't been active for a while so if you start a new thread in the Not Diagnosed But Worried section you will probably get more responses there as that is what you are - not DXd but worried, not waiting for the results of tests/scans done.
IBC is rare, being only between 1% and 5% of all DXd BC so no there are definately not as many of us dealing with/talking about it. I found quite a bit of info on line - most was good/useful but some seemed to be designed to scare. There is a Section here for IBCers - it is not one of the more active ones but then there aren't as many of us. IF everyone who thinks they are IBC because of skin issues were, it would not be as rare as it is but would be the most common cancer. It does not 'come and go', it is aggressive and rapid and can literally present overnight, it has no 'rules' it follows will all (For me, an enlarged lymph node under arm came first literally overnight, 6 day later I had the DX - IBC, in the 17 days til I started neoadjuvant chemo the node greatly enlarged, breast enlarged, nipple inverted, peau d'orange developed. BUT I never had any discharge, pain, itchiness or reddened skin. Others are different.) From what you wrote, IBC would probably be very low on the likelihood list but anything is possible. No one here can DX you - we are your medical staff.
We do each have to be our own best advocate in everything in life. That does not include self DXing, but being diligent/vigilent in pursueing answers. 'Something' is going on so you do need to find out what it actually is so you do need to see Dr(s). If you feel uncomfortable with their DX, then 2nd (or more) opinions may be in order. For the skin issues, a Dermatologist may be in order..

Thank you Kicks,
I didn't know where to post, and for these symptoms I've been talking about burning, swelling, itching have just been over the past week or two, and have been getting worse. The initial problem was the bleeding and then surgery, ductal removal. I hope and pray that it is something minor and m making an appointment with an oncologist tomorrow. There is only one in my area with my insurance. I will go on not diagnosed but worried. Thanks for responding to me .
-
Hi , recently I started bleeding from my right nipple , I have an appointment with the doctor next week . Did any of you notice when you were diagnosed if it involved one duct or more ? Thanks.
-
Hi, Ginger, I was diagnosed with infiltrating ductal carcinoma of right breast. I have bleeding from three ducts. My bleeding started since 2007 and it was not cancerous at that time. Diagnosis changed on 2015 when the adenoma was so intricate that I could not ignore it. Breast was so big and heavy I needed to find a surgeon. However, surgeons just wanted a biopsy from a radiologist and the mass had a massive cloud of veins and arteries I didn't let anyone touch me outside an OR. But a bleeding nipple does not mean it's cancer. Interesting, the only cancer tumor was surrounded by other benign tumors and my skin and nipple were free of cancer cells reported the pathology report done from the mastectomy.
-
Hi Mariangel43, thank you for sharing your story with me. I hope you are doing well now . Bleeding from your breast is such a surprise , at least to me . It must have been difficult to deal with it for a few years like you did ? Did mammograms or ultrasounds ever show anything unusual ?
I have one duct , I think so far , that is bleeding.
Take care .
-
Hi Ginger - I had it too for several year before diagnosis, two excisional biopsies found only benign issues. In hindsight I'm grateful for that annoying bleeding. It kept me on point with my screenings. For me it was a signal of a diseased right breast up to no good, Crossing my fingers that everything is B9 for you!
-
Hi farmerlucy, thank you for sharing your story with me ! Yes , I can understand the little reminders that keep us going to our screenings , it is definitely going to keep it in the front of my mind . I believe our bodies speak to us in so many ways , it is important to listen . Having doctors that listen is always important too .
Hugs

Hey ladies!
First off, this site is a world of knowledge! And I thank you all for sharing!my sister is BRCA1positve and has OV Cancer. I am currently waiting to see genetic counsellor. I've had a mammogram, followed by an ultrasound on my left breast! I'm told I have very cystic dense breasts! Anyway, this morning I woke up and there was a nickel sized blood spot on my sheet, right where right nipple lays! No dry blood on my body, nowhere else I can tell that the blood could have come from. I squeezed both nipples but nothing! Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this? I l'm not freaking out.... just wondering! Ive been to the dr so many times in the last few months....I don't want to seem like I'm over reacting!
Thank you
-
I always had a letdown feeling sometimes and very small (1/16) inch spots of blood in my bra or on my shirt. I never expressed it and it was only on one side.
-
Hi everyone ,
I had my appointment with the BS today and I am scheduled for surgery on the 25th for a duct removal . I am a little nervous but I am much better with knowing how things will go instead of not knowing anything. We shall see how it goes ! Have a great day
-
I go for ultrasound on my breast tomorrow. I was just wondering if i were to bring in a sample of the bloody sheet? Could or would it be beneficial? Could they test it? To rule out cancer?
I'm just curious.....
-
Can't hurt. I didn't, but the tech did you some type of swab that tested whether they was blood in the discharge
-
I had my exploration ad ductal excision on Wednesday . I am recovering nicely . I go back next week for my check up and results . I am taking one step at a time no matter what . Have a great day ladies .
-
Hey Ginger, glad you are getting some answers! I hope all goes well for you, please let us know how it turns out!
I had my breast ultrasound Wednesday, she asked me a ton of questions. Measured something and checked my lymph nodes as well. I still haven't heard from my Dr. for results. Starting to worry a bit, as my last ultrasound (left breast) the results were sent to my Dr. the same day. It was all good.
As you all know waiting is so hard, but i'm staying positive and keeping an open mind!!
-
So I seen my dr today. I have a dialated duct. They are going to schedule a ductogram and possibly biopsy. Possibly a paploma? Or cancer! I'm just glad I'm going to get answers
