Anyone who has had nipple bleeding.

I have BC and never experienced nipple bleeding, but my mom did years ago and back then the scanning was not very sophisticated, so surgical removal of the duct was the norm. It was a papilloma (benign), and she had no further breast issues for the rest of her life (is now 82, had the surgery in her thirties.) That seems to the usual cause for most nipple bleeding, so I am hoping you all get good news.

hi there, I just wanted you to know I'm in the same boat, for 6 months or so iv felt discharge or something come out from my nipple it's only till I laid down one night & saw blood I panicked..

Went straight to the gp who referred me to a breast clinic, they booked me an appointment for the 31st March, then bought idly forward to the 27th, the waiting is killing me! How did yours go

Dear Stacelouux, We are sorry you are dealing with these symptoms but glad that you reached out here and that you made an appointment to see a physician. The waiting for answer to breast changes can be so stressful as many of our members will say to you. Do not jump to the conclusion that you have breast cancer as there are other more benign conditions that also can lead to breast changes and in your case nipple discharge. Hi Stacelouux,

Good luck at your appointment on the 27th . I had nipple discharge , blood , and my BS removed the duct within a week of examining me . I was glad she did and am very happy with the results . On the cancer continuum of 0-4 I am a 1 . Ductal hyperplasia and focal dilation . So good news for now . The surgery was easy and not too much recovery . I did not lose sensation either . But I also took it easy and listened to my body and I believe that played a role in it .

About 10 days ago I was studying and suddenly my left nipple started itching severly. I scratched it for about 2 mins and started studying.I slept after an hour. Next day when I went to take the shower at about 12 or 1 PM, I found that my nipple was sctarched [tip of the nipple].I squeezed it and tiny amount of blood came from one of tiny skin things it has.I showed it to my mother she said its mothing.[u scratched it hard so it happened] I applied antiseptic, left it and again in the evening I tried to squeeze it "tiny amount of blood came'. That's it.Day after there was a tiny brown  dry layer on the scratch and day after it was gone. No more bleeding thereafter even after squeezing, although my nipple tip is pink. Should I consult a doctor?????{I'm scared} PLZ PLZ REPLY ME. I'M 27 YEARS OLD UNMARRIED GIRL.

I'm a new member. I'm 40 years old and don't have a family history of breast cancer. 20 years ago I had a pre cancerous cervical tumor removed (all normal yearly paps since removal). I was also dx with a pituitary tumor at that time (it's since shrunk and not detectable on MRI anymore). I've been dealing with body aches and joint pain over the past year and have flare ups. I've never had a mammogram, but my PCP said I'm now of age and should have one. So, last week I scheduled one (2 weeks from now ). Yesterday, after my shower, I was drying off and something prompted my to look at my nipples. I touched my right one and noticed a tiny blackish discharge. So I pressed on the areola and that same color discharge formed 2 small drops next to each other. Then, the discharge dripped out (like the size of a blood drop from a finger stick). The discharge isn't leaking out unless touched (which I'm totally avoiding). But, I checked again today by pressing on the areola and that dark black, brown, reddish discharge still comes out. My PCP changed the mammogram order from screening to diagnostic. I don't have a fever, swelling, reddened, or breast pain. I haven't had bloody shirts or bras like others. I'm wondering if this might be something that'll just pass on its own because I'm not leaking blood unless the right nipple is stimulated. Does anyone think I'm having this uneasy feeling for no reason? Like I had mentioned earlier no family history of BC, but other cancers run in my family (colon, leukemia, stomach, lung, and prostate).

alisa1990, I'm confused as to why you would consult a doctor. It sounds like your symptoms had a reasonable cause (scratching), followed a reasonable course (tiny amount of blood, a little crust) then resolved (gone) except for some residual pinkness (from your continued squeezing?). Are there any remaining symptoms and how long have they persisted? A lump, inflammation anything?

Think about it this way, if this was happening on, say, your LEG (you scratched it, it bled, made a small scab, turned pink then went away) would you go see a doctor?

MrsNurseG, I would follow up with your diagnostic mammo and us and planned. It is most likely nothing, but it is better to check it out and know for certain!

Thanks MTwoman. I don't know anyone that's ever had breast cancer or breast issues, so I didn't know where to turn. I don't really think it's anything either, but just needed the reassurance!

P.S. I used to live in Livingston...hike the Bridger for me

Definitely follow up w that diagnostic mammo, and if they say you have dense breasts, make sure they do an ultrasound. Some areas of concern don't show on a mammo (mine didn't, even though it was a palpable lump). They could see it on the us though. Good luck!

Jan 2017 I noticed blood on my shirt over my left breast. Each time I squeezed my nipple, it would produce blood. I scheduled a 3 d mammogram which came back negative and saw my PCG who sent me to get a ultrasound of my breast. It was negative as well! I was then referred to an oncologist who questioned why I was sent to him when both of my results were negative. He stated that it probably was an infection of my mam ducts and wanted to send me home with an antibiotic. He told me simply to not squeeze my nipple!!. I refused and requested a biopsy/ductectomy of the "infected duct". The following week I had the procedure and I received a call saying that I had stage 2 dcis. The physician was really concerned and apologetic because, as he put it, "the cancer was hiding". He recommended a mastectomy. I had a bilateral mastectomy with immediate DIEP reconstruction (PAINFUL) on March 14, 2017. A week later the oncologist said that there was a significant mass of cancer "hiding" on the lower left side of my breast and that he removed all of it. I didn't need chemo or radiation. Please speak up and take a stand when it comes to your health Ladies! Had I just took the oncologists advice and ignored the bleeding, I would still have cancer.

I've had bleeding from my nipple for the past 3 weeks.

Background: I've been having some noticeable breast "weirdness" since this past December or January. Lots of breast pain in my right breast, achey and stabbing at times. I never felt a lump, but parts of my breast tissue just felt "Off". Like it felt like normal tissue, but like someone had gone in and rearranged the inside of my breast, if that makes any sense. I also had some yellow discharge from my right nipple. There was a little from the left as well, but the right was much more "productive". I saw a breast specialist in March since my issues didn't seem to wax and wane with my cycle. I had an ultrasound (I'm 28) and nothing at all was seen to indicate a source of my pain or to explain why my breasts felt different. The doctor told me I just have fibrocystic breasts, not to express any discharge, and cut back on dairy, caffeine, and alcohol.

Noticing the Bleeding: On April 30 2017, I went to put on my bra and saw a small bloodstain on the inside of the right cup. It wasn't big at all. It was roughly around where my nipple laid in the bra, so I tossed aside my doctor's orders to not express and BAM. Blood. Not a lot - like a small/medium drop from an eyedropper (best analogy, sorry). I wiped it off and squeezed it again, hoping it was just a fluke, and more blood came out. My breast was also incredibly painful - it felt bruised all over, and it hurt to raise my arm over my head.

I was seen very quickly at the breast center, where they put me through a Mammo, 3D Mammo, and an ultrasound, and they swabbed the discharge for bacteria. Mastitis was ruled out, ultrasound still didn't see anything, and because I'm so young, my breasts are very dense and nothing was seen on mammography. My breast specialist luckily isn't letting this slip away from us and ordered an MRI, which I just had a couple days ago - 2 weeks after being seen at the breast center. I'm still waiting for the results, and I have an appointment with a breast surgeon next week. My doctor told me "Even if the MRI is clear, we'll want a biopsy, either core or excisional, so you're seeing a surgeon. Let's just hope that the MRI DOES show something so we'll know what specifically we're chasing after."

So that's where I am right now - waiting and hoping that my MRI comes back showing something. A clear MRI is not going to be reassuring in this case. I honestly don't care WHAT it shows. I just want to know why my breast is bleeding. If it turns out to be cancer, then we'll deal with it when that diagnosis comes. But right now my care team and I only care about finding the source of the bleeding first and foremost.

@Corgisaurus Perhaps you should get a ductectomy. That is the only way my Dcis was discovered.

Hi Everyone!

A little background/update to a prior post.

April 18th - 1st noticed discharge (right breast and single duct).

April 28th Diagnostic Mammo - negative.

May 11th - I had a right breast ductogram (really dark red blood X 1 month). The bleeding is not spontaneous. It can be easily expressed with very little touch or pressure. The Radiologist was able to express it at around the 2 o'clock area. The dye that was injected stopped about 8mm down and then came back out. She said the duct actually looked good, but it was being blocked by something. Since the dye couldn't pass through she couldn't see what was blocking it. No visual papilloma.

May 16th - consult with surgeon. She recommended waiting until discharge became spontaneous. I, however, couldn't just wait. In my mind, prevention will prevail! If it's nothing then fantastic, but if it's something then I'm going to make sure I take care if it now...and the only way to find out what it is is to move forward and not wait! She actually agreed and said that I met criteria to have surgery if I chose not to wait.

May 24th - I went to have a terminal duct excision. But, this is where I'm confused. The surgeon spoke to my husband (if she spoke to me I don't remember ) and told him that the central main duct was severely constricted. She had to pull back most of the nipple, remove the central main duct and tie everything off at the bottom. Does that mean she removed all the ducts and not just the single duct that was blocked (at the 2pm mark)?

Everything I've been reading talks about ducts being dilated as with ductal ectasia. Could this still be that?

Also, what would cause it to be so constricted. I'm not breastfeeding and I'm not menopausal. I don't have any pain, swelling, tenderness, redness, or masses. Only symptom was that discharge that I've never ever seen before!

If anyone could please help me clarify this that would be greatly appreciated! My follow up isn't until next Thursday!

Joit - I got my MRI back with results saying that they didn't see anything near my nipple to explain the discharge, but found a concerning spot on the right breast and a two suspicious spots on the left. I was called back for a followup ultrasound and biopsy. They wanted to biopsy the left but they couldn't visualize it on ultrasound - nothing but shadow int he spot. But they were able to see the spot on the right easily, so they biopsied it and I'm currently waiting for results on that. I'm also waiting to be scheduled for an MRI biopsy of the mass on the left because it was so suspicious looking. None of the spots are near my nipple.

The surgeon may want to do a ductogram, but my doctor actually prefers to not do them much these days and is going to leave that decision up to the surgeon.

Sorry, I wanted to wait until more tests were done before giving an update.

I've had two biopsies - one in a mass on my right and one in a non-mass in my left. Luckily both were benign.

The mass on the right is a fibroadenoma, and my right breast has about 12 similar looking masses that the doc is confident that all of them are fibroadenomas. There's no point in poking my breast in twelve spots.

The non-mass on the left is a chunk of super fibrous tissue that I needed to go through an MRI biopsy in order to sample. That was NOT a pleasant experience. There's also a couple of spots in my left breast that the docs are confident are fibroadenomas.

The nipple bleeding is still unresolved. I consulted with a surgeon who was convinced I caused the bleeding myself with a self exam that I did three weeks prior to the spontaneous bleeding episode. I've been ordered to not express at all during self exams from now on and not express the right nipple at all until a follow-up with her in August to see if the bleeding's resolved.

I was told that since it's just one instance of spontaneous bleeding and I'm so young and nothing was seen on MRI or Ultrasound, she doesn't see the point in doing a ductal excision if the bleeding gets resolved with rest and time. If I'm still bleeding at the followup, or if I experience another episode of spontaneous bleeding, then we'll move forward with surgery.

Hi Everyone,

I am 30 years old, unmarried, never pregnant and never breastfeeding.

I first saw a bloody discharge last year on 9/22/2019, 10 days after a car accident, I went to urgent care and had a ultrasound, the result was unrevealing. The discharge stopped after that once.

I then had another bloody discharge with manual expression on 10/13/19 and then scheduled for diagnostic mammogram on 10/16, which were still in revealing, with a BI/RADS 3. A ductogram was taken on 11/7/19, they still said they were able to see a small discharge on 10:00 direction but no lesion/ objecting defect.

Then I was referred to see a breast suregon on 11/14, he referred for me for MRI, which I just took 01/08/2020, I have anxiety and I am stupid enough to believe that I can dodge a bullet with my head hiding.

The breast surgeon told me he would contact me a soon as possible once the result is available.

I am from Asia so please pardon my English and my breast knowledge was so limited until I google/research recently. The more I visit different websites, the more scared I get.

Feeling is mixed, I want to get to the bottom of my answer but I guess al I can do is to pray.

Thanks for this website, I feel kinda relieved to know the sooner the better.
