Etiquette when consulting with different surgeons?

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a silly question, but in my research online I had read that it was a good idea to meet with different surgeons and get a 2nd opinion on treatment options.

I just got diagnosed a week ago, and met with 2 different surgeons this week. The first one I met on Tuesday was polite and professional, she recommended that I get a breast MRI and genetic testing done. She referred me to an imaging center for the MRI which I did this past Thursday.

I also met with another surgeon this past Thursday right before my MRI appointment, and she was so amazing on all levels, my husband and I both agreed that she was way better than the first surgeon we met with. She recommended I get genetic testing done right away in her office, which I did on Thursday.

Here's where I get confused... I got my MRI results back from the first surgeon yesterday, and now I have to wait 4 weeks to get the results of my genetic testing from the 2nd surgeon in 4 weeks. Unfortunately, my MRI results show another area in the same breast far away from my tumor that they say needs to be biopsied. But it is too close to my implant and could damage my implant so they recommend that it is biopsied during a lumpectomy, but if it turns out to be cancerous then I would need a mastectomy. I'm not sure what to do!

Should I send my MRI results to the 2nd surgeon and see if she has a different opinion on what treatment plan is best?

I'm pretty sure I want to go with the 2nd surgeon I met with, but I have to first make sure that her surgical facilities are within my health care network, otherwise I'll go with the first as I need as much of my treatment covered as possible.

How do I proceed here? Do I tell both of them that I am getting 2nd opinions and haven't decided who I am going to work with yet? When I do make that decision, do I then inform the other doctor I am seeking treatment elsewhere? I have never been in this position before. I hope I didn't make a mistake by getting separate tests done with different doctors..it seems more complicated now to make sure that everyone has all the results to look at.

Please advise me on how to best handle this situation. And also how to proceed better in the future, for example if I meet with several plastic surgeons re: reconstruction.

Thank you! :)

Not that I am an expert, but I was also diagnosed recently and just had lumpectomies. Similarly, I went to one breast surgeon and then decided to get a second opinion. Most doctors should be OK with second opinions. If they are not, then move on. After all, this is your life. The first surgeon thought I should have an MRI as well, and like you, something else came up on the MRI that wasn't there before. She also suggested genetic testing as my mom had bc 10 years ago. I wasn't able to get an appointment with the first surgeon's office for genetic testing, and it so happened that the second doctor was able to do the test in her office. It should not be a problem for you to get the results sent to the other doctor. I think more important is whether the Dr. is in your network and that you are covered by insurance. I ultimately chose the first doctor, and she did not assume I was going to choose her, and was very happy that I did. I am now in the same situation with oncologists. I am seeing two right now. As long as you tell the doctors that you are getting a second or third opinion at the outset, it should be OK. At least that is what I am doing. Both oncologists I have interviewed are very nice and helpful and yes, I feel a little weird having to tell one that I am not going to use them, but ultimately I have to go with someone with whom I feel more comfortable with. You should do the same, and don't feel guilty about it. Good luck!

sballan - thank you so much for sharing! this whole process is definitely overwhelming, and confusing! i really appreciate your advice very much. i have been on an emotional roller coaster, as both surgeons had assured me my tumor was not a big deal, and then to all of a sudden find out there is another area of concern that is also possibly cancerous just threw me for a real loop. i had been very calm up until that point. and now i feel uncertain again. and it definitely doesn't help that this is all happening a few days before the holidays. trying to stay strong. wishing you the best!

LoveandLight - By all means get a copy of the MRI sent to the 2nd doc since you liked her better. You'll want her to see what's up even though the genetic test aren't back. You should be able to contact the clinic/hospital where you had the MRI done and ask them to send a copy of the report to the new doc. If not, you can certainly get a report yourself. Also, you can & should get a CD of the MRI results from them.

LoveandLightinLA, wishing you all the best in this decision making process.

I got opinions from 2 different boards (group of surgeon, oncologist and radiologists) before I decided what route to go. I went with the first surgeon I met with. She was fine with me getting multiple opinions and also said that if the other surgeon suggested a different kind of surgery, she would be okay with performing that if I chose that route. I had a lumpectomy(left) with an oncoplastic reduction (right). Breast surgeon and plastic surgeon worked together.

However, I did not like the oncologist or radiologist in that first group. I met with 3 oncologists before finding one I liked and trusted. I think it is very important to find a doctor that you feel comfortable with.... makes such a difference in the long run.

    Take care,

    Reikion
