Z, my goal was to do fitness twice a day, not twice a week. But right now I'll adjust my goal to once a day. I used to do at least that, and only faltered this year. Yes, the dance is my joy. I love it more than chocolate.

Agree that exercise and mental state are so connected. Kitties and other pets also do us good both mentally and physically. They can lower blood pressure for one thing.

Doctors must love when their patients ask, "How soon can I run again?" MSL, since running is cardio, maybe think of strength and flexibilty? Something that uses different muscles?

I've had appointments all day but am determined to dance tonight. There, now I'm committed.

I'm glad you posted ShetlandPony because to be honest I've been chucking a very exclusive pity party in my room. Only I was invited and it's been such a blast (weeping, howling, the full works).

Then I read your post, and one from Ebru that she just posted on the thread I started seeking advice for my onc appointment etc and I've called time on my little meltdown.

I'm going to head out and get myself moving. I'm going to write down what I'm grateful for today, and you guys will be right amongst it.

    Thanks x

You've got it, MSL. Have a good cry if you need it, then take some deep breaths, and carry on.

MSL, we need to let it out, but I hope you can take comfort in my saying that it will get better for you and in fact I think you could be looking to have many good years ahead of you. I do believe being fit helps a lot. I was never really fit, but I decided to work at getting fit my first day of chemo and I'm still here 9 years later, fitter than I can recall being in my life. Exercise for me has been great medicine and my body seems to be continuing to respond to it. I do try to do something everyday.

Shetland, I love that you love dancing more than chocolate. I love dancing as well. I am getting used to turning but I still get dizzy although much less now. Whew! I thought I would have to give up salsa. My knees are also less problematic now doing jumps in Body Jam and my toes seem to be adjusting to high heels for Tango. All in all I think the variety of dance styles allows my body to recover from one style to the next.

    Hi Ladies,

    It's a long one...

Made it to Colorado Springs last night and have worked in a little exercise time. DH and I did some walking at the Badlands (handicapped trail- should have pushed harder). We did Mt Rushmore and Custer Park the next day and had to wash buffalo spit off our car that night. We hiked 1.3 mi at Devils Tower in Wyoming...@4,500 ft elevation. Stayed at Saratoga Springs in Wyoming Monday and enjoyed the hot mineral springs and swam laps in the hot water with two inches of snow on the ground. I don't know if "taking the waters" heals anything, but it feels amazing!

They closed the road over Rocky Mt National park yesterday due to the first snow, but we were able to drive up about ten miles into the park and I took a picture of a trail...does that count???Hiking at Garden of the Gods with my daughter this afternoon and then undoing all the good work with Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow :).

When we were here last year I had just started treatment and felt awful...pain all over, scared to death and then got an altitude related migraine and ended up in the ER. Tried some MJ for symptoms but got the stuff that makes you high and was totally out of step. No one ever knew how bad I felt. This year I exercise more, have lost about 10 lbs., avoid gluten and dairy, eat organic, use complementary practices and supplements and feel so much better. The disease may not be better, but having something I can do to manage it made a huge difference.

Happy Thanksgivng to my fellow Americans. Happy Thursday to everyone else...I am so thankful for all of you here!

MSL - It's unfair that you should have cancer. A massive pity party is in order. At some point, we move on if only because we have stuff that has to get done. But the unfairness of it washes over each of us from time to time. We had plans and now this. I am glad you have joined us as you are very good at communicating your experience. This helps us as much as it helps you. Thank you.

Kathryn - I think I know that badlands handicapped trail. Taking the waters heals everything, as does a really big Thanksgiving Dinner. Interesting contrast between this year and last. Same cancer, totally different experience once you get a handle on how to manage it.

Shetland - My only point is that your exercise routine as it is awesome. I do hope you get to your goal of twice a day. Twice a day would be awesome as well.

I rode my bike today with DD1. Up a steep hill. Off the road. Down some rugged terrain. Did well. Did not fall. Thankful!

5K Turkey Trot tomorrow at 9am. We're having two Thanksgivings, one cooked for us tomorrow and one we will cook ourselves on Saturday so I need to get a head start working of the food.

    Keep moving ladies!

Let us know what you are up to.

Iwrite, wow, Garden of the Gods, there must be a reason they named it that. Taking in the waters is absolutely what the doctor ordered. Congratulations on doing everything to make yourself feel better and succeeding!

Z, grateful you didn't fall as well. Great idea to pre-burn calories. I also do that before crossing the border to Italy or France. You can enjoy the food much more!

Did some core exercises as well as the usual biking to do errands. I'm thankful for the electrical assistance to be able to haul groceries and such uphill.

Heidi - I love electric assist bikes. If my garage was a little bigger I would add it to my bike stable...

I got myself a Fitbit while out thanksgiving shopping. It was pretty cool. But it migrated to might daughters wrist after about 3 hours and haven't seen it since.

One thanksgiving meal down, one to go. Jogged the 5K turkey trot yesterday. I was in the back of the pack with the strollers and the 5 year olds but I did it.

    Maybe some core...

High Intensity Interval Training was Most Effective in Relieving Fatigue in Cancer Patients

Those who performed HIIT three times a week for eight weeks experienced a significant decrease in their fatigue levels. Meanwhile, those performing moderate intensity continuous exercise, experienced consistently high levels of fatigue. Previous medical advice for cancer survivors has focused on low-to-moderate intensity physical activity.

HIIT exercise sessions generally consist of a warm up period, then several repetitions of high-intensity exercise separated by medium intensity exercise for recovery, then a cool down period. The high-intensity exercise should be done at near maximum cardio intensity. The medium exercise should be about 50% intensity.

Depending on one's level of cardiovascular development, the moderate-level intensity can be as slow as walking.[4] A common formula involves a 2:1 ratio of work to recovery periods, for example, 30–40 seconds of hard sprinting alternated with 15–20 seconds of jogging or walking.

I've been trying to work in some high intensity activities to my workout. Easier said than done, but when I can do it, it does help.

Z-good job on the turkey trot. Doesn't matter where you are in the pack. What matters is that you are challenging your body, and you are moving! I am well acquainted with the strollers, dog walkers, and toddlers that are at the back of the 5k packs. I am always among the slowest of the walkers, but my family sticks with me and tells me I am doing great. They are the best! So I keep going, and try to keep pushing myself to do better.

The information on HIIT is interesting. My problem is that when I try to increase intensity, I tend to increase injuries too. But I'll keep working on it, making tiny little increases as I'm able.

Did lots of shopping with DD. Came home exhausted and decided I needed fresh air and exercise. Dragged my tired self down to the school track and walked 2miles. Ahh...feel so much better now.

Hope everyone is doing well. Take care.

Bionic - Awesome job dragging yourself to the track. Exercise does cure exhaustion but doing it when you are exhausted is hard.

We did a 4 mile family hike today after a lot prep for Thanksgiving Meal #2 tomorrow. Time for table tennis with DD2.

HIIT is not for everyone and even then, not the right thing all the time, but I plan to add it to the regime as I am able. It is an interesting and motivating article. I look for motivation everywhere I can get it because it can be very hard to get my butt to a workout.

Z, my e-citybike has been living out on the sidewalk under a tree for 6 years now. (Hope the picture comes out...) Thanks for the HIIT article. HIIT probably helped me overcome fatigue early on back when it was still called Tabata training.

Bionic, I used to do it in a steamed-up bathroom in case I didn't get warmed up enough. I never injured myself then unlike at the gym. This may not be for anyone with heart problems though as the heat may increase the intensity. I was always soaking wet after and ready for a shower. This was my detox method after chemo.

Shazza, how did the walk in the dark go?

With the talk of HIIT training, I have to give a plug for my favorite fitness app- Aaptiv (it used to be Skyfit). They have a bunch of training sessions for running and walking (treadmill and outdoor), elliptical, yoga, indoor cycling, etc at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. I love it. It pushes me to work out so much harder than I can do alone. Its like having a personal trainer in your ear telling you when to go faster or slow down (or add incline indoors) and keep you motivated! There are usually free month trials floating around; I think I spent $50 for the year, but its been sooo worth it for me

Heidi-loved the photo. The ebike looks wonderful and very happy under the beautiful tree.

Shazza-you are such an inspiration! Hope all went well with the walk.

I was hoping to get out for a quick bike ride, but ended up at the gym riding inside. It was a good chance to try just a little HIIT. Even the small amount that I did upped the sweat level significantly:)

Thanks to everyone for posting-you all keep me motivated.

Hi friends! It's been a long time since I've been on and posted. You are all so inspiring! I was doing really well for awhile and then I got a cold and sort of scaled back a little and haven't quite gotten back to my five days a week exercise plan. Of course, it also became winter here in Minnesota, so that doesn't help when my main exercise is walking. We also did some traveling in Nicaragua. Went boogieboarding, surfing, and horseback riding and lots of walks on the beach. I got stung by a stingray while I was out boogieboarding, which was not fun. Super painful!! It, apparently, took more out of me than I expected and I fainted at dinner that night. I like to think I'm tougher than I am, but the body doesn't lie!

Thanks for the HIIT information and for the Aaptive info. I will have to check it out. I try to do intervals by running for half a block then walking a quarter block etc, but I can't do it more than about three times in a row. Then I have to walk about 5 minutes normally before I can try another sprint. I guess I just have to be patient and keep doing what I can. I need to come to this thread more regularly to stay inspired. Got out for a three mile walk with intervals today since it was above freezing here. I stopped at the school playground and did some half pull ups.

One thing I've added in is 10 minute dance party time a few times a week. I put on some good music and just dance around. I've also started doing the Five Tibetans every morning which does really help with my energy level. Some days are easy, some days are hard, but I always feel better when I get some of movement in. Thanks to all of you for sharing and reminding me to keep moving!

DGHoff - good to hear from you. Great creative exercise strategies. Doesn't matter what you do as long as you move and occasionally get your heart rate up. I do finding that exercise that pushes my range of movement like dance is an important piece.

Keep moving ladies! ... sitting down to my second Thanksgiving dinner in a few minutes....

if ever anyone deserved 2 thanksgiving dinners it is you Z! You're a fitness inspiration.

In good news I was able to alternate jogging with walking today, did about half/half in my 6 mile trot. I feel really good.

This thread lifts me up - it so helps to check in and get ideas and motivation from each other. Thanks again Z for being the glue that holds it together!

    Let's keep it up!!

Well I survived my half marathon walk last night. It was reasonably slow going as it weaves through much of the inner city nightlife zones and 4 thousand walkers plus the usual Saturday night crowds on the side walk made it a tight squeeze. It was interesting seeing the city from a different light.

While we finished around midnight it was after 2am before I was home in bed. I managed to get up this morning for Sunday yoga so am hoping I don't suffer to much from sore muscles in the coming days.

DGHoff thanks for mentioning the 5 Tibetans it a while since I've done it but I really should incorporate it back into my daily practice.

Keep moving everyone. We are awesome.

Finally getting back into the swing of things with five days in a row of activity! Started the day with some Five Tibetans, came home and dance jammed for 20 minutes before dinner (added a few hand weights) and then went for a 30 minute walk after dinner. Tired now!
