Potential pet support resources for my friend with cancer

Hello!

This is probably a shot in the dark, but I thought I'd throw the question out there just to see if anyone had any thoughts/ideas.

A good friend of mine has multiple myeloma and is terminal, but right now her cancer is controlled and she is doing fairly well with her treatment. The problem is she has had repeated bowel obstructions and has been in and out of the hospital and may be facing a bowel resection. Apparently she has been told she could be hospitalized for a week or much longer if there are problems. She lives in assisted living and has a cat that is very important to her. She has people to come in and feed him, but is worried about him being alone for a lengthy period of time if she is hospitalized for a long time. She is considering giving him up (I am the one who will take him when she has to surrender him) but I really want to help her keep him if possible as she lives alone otherwise and he provides much needed companionship for her. If her bowel resection goes well, her cancer is well controlled and I think she could live for a while still and I don't think she should be alone.

We've discussed many options including having him stay at someone's house, boarding him, hiring someone to come in to watch him, etc. and have come up empty handed. There are some logistical limitations including the number of people they will allow into an assisted living place AND I believe cost is a factor for her due to medical bills and she can't work and is on disability. She is going to look into hiring a pet sitter to come in, but logistically I'm not sure how well it will work for her.

Does anyone know of any resources through the American Cancer Society or any other cancer support services that have help for people with their pets? She lives in Maine FWIW.
