Hiatal Hernia?

My pet-scan from last week showed something light up around my esophagus and a hitatal hernia. My MO thinks they are connected and that the spot is non malignant, which is good. I also tend to get a lot of gas and acid reflux, which is apparently a symptom. However, she is referring me to a GI doc for confirmation and to discuss treatment options.

Apparently this runs in my family. My father informed me that his father (my grandfather) had one, along with my father's aunt (my grandfather's sister). My father also has had a lot of GI issues and had to change his diet to combat them.

As anybody else experienced this? If so, do you know what I can expect? I am sure a lot has changed from one my grandfather and great aunt had theirs.

My mom has one. It was found on her last colonoscopy/endoscopy a few months ago. The doctor said it's relatively common and nothing to seriously worry about (especially if there are no symptoms). I believe he said to take omeprazole if the herniabegins to bothers her. I think there is a surgery to repair the hernia if symptoms are severe or problematic.

My last CT scan, a year ago, showed a hiatal hernia, which was a big surprise to me. I have had no symptoms. I checked with Dr. Google and feel confident it's nothing to be concerned about.
