So...whats for dinner?

Susan, I Hope that DD's hives remit. Always a terrible feeling to have one's body erupt for no understood reason. And of course it makes sense for you to "protect" that darling from a medical facility! Have fun with Olivia!
I'm glad the book is enjoyable to you. It's an unusual one that not everyone might appreciate. I did! And I figured that O would enjoy those musical verses sung/played by her grandparents.
After anothervery long gym effort today, we had grilled chicken again for dinner. This time I made a Greek marinade for it, and we enjoyed that. Also made an orzo dish with diced shallot, red and yellow peppers, chopped kale, some dried mint, and parm sprinkled on top since my feta was old and disgusting looking. Made a salad with base of red leaf lettuce which we picked up at Volante's on our way home from gym.
Zumba update...I am still not great at all the steps, (DH is even more hysterical tho, since he has no musical sense, nor rhythm, and just randomly moves around waving his arms) but our teacher is so adorably into the music, and is such a great dancer, that every struggling participant enjoys the class!
Random question.....has anyone ever had a piece of leather furniture that gave a terrible "off gas" odor. DH's new chair, which he has been starting to love, is doing that so it may be returned. Really gross and unhealthful smelling!
-
Will have to rummage around in the freezer to find out what calls to me for dinner tonight.
-
Hi all - I have been missing a bit - traveled out of town, sadly for a funeral, shortly after surgery and it has taken a while to get back into the swing. Super cute Olivia and grand pics!
susan - I make those sesame noodles often! Easy and good.
moon - feel better soon! That's an order!
lacey - I laughed out loud at the description of your DH at Zumba, DH and I did P90x exercise discs for a while and watching him attempt the yoga produced a very similar result. He would pretzel himself into a position and they were already on to the next, which would cause some swearing - yoga is not relaxing for him! Whenever the subject of yoga comes up he always says "I hate yoga!" and people look at him like he has two heads, lol!
eric - I am picturing the dogs and cat enjoying waffles/batter, so cute!
-
Ha ha Lacey - love the zumba description! I've been waffling with the notion of getting the "Oldies" zumba addition -- it's strictly for baby boomers and moves at a slower pace. It's been on my amazon wish list for a while now. I need to just do it since our trips to the gym have been highly erratic since all the dad stuff going on. I think it would be more fun and motivating with an instructor though.
I'm wondering if the chair odor is caused by the foam padding. The very dense foam (especially the memory foam) can give off an odor that does eventually go away. Never had a leather product do that. Weird.
Today I dug some new potatoes and picked a large bunch of spinach which we'll have for dinner with a grilled pork steak. I also have an orzo Greek salad leftover from the weekend which I will eat, since DH won't touch olives unless they're in a bloody mary.
Dad had a four day stay in the hospital getting his meds straightened out. Turns out his pulse and heart rate problems were caused by his thyroid medication. Unfortunately, it caused him to lose valuable physical therapy time and his discharge date is next week. He is not ready for supportive living so I don't know what the plan is going to be. I'm waiting to hear from his social worker at ther rehab center today.
Love Olivia in the headphones. When we lived in St. Louis we had a 4th of July party every year which ended in everyone walking two blocks to the town fireworks display. We had football helmets for the real little kids that worked out just great. Like you Eric, I carry a pair of foam ear plugs. I often use them in casinos.
For you Carrie:

Nance - I bought a new recliner last year that had an obnoxious "outgasing" smell, although mine was fabric. It came from Macy's so I was able to read lots of reviews on line. One of the main complaints was the smell. After a month or two I didn't really smell it any more, and I have a very sensitive nose. Because of your post I actually got down on the floor & put my nose in various places. I'm guessing you're right about the foam. With my nose pressed right into the heavily padded arms & along the bottom, there is still a small residual smell. Do you have a 60 or 90 day warranty from the store?
Took my nephew to lunch today. He just moved back to Houston and wanted some of the greasy Tex-Mex he remembered from his childhood. Of course it's the same thing my son wants when he comes to town. Comfort food from their youth. There is a place in almost every strip center, I just haven't eaten that way in a long time. He was pleased. I managed to eat one cheese enchilada & a bit of rice.

I find that new memory foam--especially Tempur-Pedic--smells like a stale Hershey bar; but that doesn’t bother me half as much as the smell of a new custom guitar flight case: the petro-chemical smell of adhesives (like rubber cement mixed with superglue) is overpowering, and I have to keep them open in a separate room for a couple of weeks before I dare put a guitar inside them.
Picked out the remaining lobster meat from the shell & legs I brought home Sun. night, and then made stock out of the shells. Bought a rotisserie chicken (herbes de Provence, low-sodium) at WF, and had the wings plus a leg; and also some collard greens. (Roast potatoes for Gordy’s second side). Tonight, what’s left of the chicken--will probably stir-fry it with bell peppers, garlic greens and peapods.

so for approx 1 month I have been having heart palpitations off and on. With dizziness and nausea. Called the doc and got in for tomorrow.....but in the meantime. I have body aches and chills. As if I have a virus....what the hell? I won't know where to start when I see the doc...hypochondriac? Today after work. I slept all afternoon.
Thanks for the pic Nance. They are beautiful. Got my new one (blushing g bride) in the mail. It is do I g well and has a few blooms on it
-
Carrie - good luck tomorrow. We'll be in your pockets. Be sure to check in and let us know.
-
Yes, good luck tomorrow Carrie....thinking of you....and certainly not thinking hypochondria! Could easily be two separate things. Please do keep us posted.
Thanks for all of your ideas about the off-gassing with the chair. I know that the memory foam toppers can give such odors, for a short time, (and some of it could be the cushioning within the chair), but this is quite strong, and DH read about how the leather tanning process leaves such odors which can take a very long time to dissipate. Apparently the chemicals used are so toxic that they cannot now be used in the US. In fact, the leather part of the chair is imported from China. I am the one with the sensitive nose, but even DH is put off by this smell. Macy's said they have not had such a complaint, but are offering another chair by next week. We'll see what happens in a few more days. Tho the info DH read said that it could take many months. Not up for that! Thanks for doing sniff tests, Minus!
Nance, given your current busy state of affairs, getting the "Oldies" Zumba tape might make sense...so you can do it on your own time. Our instructor does zoom along with fast steps and I could really enjoy a slower pace. Love the flowering bush....a white flowering rhody? Or a hydrangea? I can't recall the chat you and Carrie had some pages back.
Special, I can totally appreciate your DH's feelings about yoga! Our new stretching instructor uses a lot of balance challenging yoga poses (more than our last beloved trainer did), which I can find difficult. Funny, I had no problem with the same postures in 1971!!! The good news is that our class is small, so she really checks to see that we are all doing it correctly and modifies for the most flexibility challenged of us. I'm slowly adapting to having the new trainer.
Minus, I thought of you tonight as I had a piece of string cheese, honey roasted peanuts and golden raisins for my singleton "dinner". Added a glass of wine once DH came home. Just was not in the mood to do anything but graze on my own....and that would happen several times a week if I were on my own.Yet interestingly, I didn't feel the usualneed to check out the "candy drawer" for chocolate after those "main course" choices.

Appetizer was a Sabra hummus single, a 1/4 c. of guacamole, 1/4 c. of tuna salad (WF lemon-dill) and sliced bell peppers and seedless cucumber. Then a rotisserie chicken thigh, spiced picked brussels sprouts and curried picked cauliflower. For dessert, half a cup of low-sugar milk and a couple squares of sugar-free dark chocolate.
-
lots of Olivia's. Popular name past few years. This is my granddaughterOlivia who is on the left. She is 4 and a twin sister to Ella. Such cuties but are a handful !!!
-
ThinkingPositive, such beautiful granddaughters! I just want to hug them both!
-
Thanks!! Those two plus my grandson are one of my reasons that I have to continue thinking positive thoughts all the time!!! I try!!
-
What cuties!
Lacey, they are Annabelles but I think I'm going to have to get Carrie's blushing bride.
Best of luck Carrie. Hope you can get some answers and feel better.
-
carberry - feel better right now!
Thinking - so cute! They look so girly!
Dinner last night was angel hair with marinara and mushroom sauce from the freezer, Caesar salad, garlic toast. Tonight is short ribs in sort of a Polynesian sauce - pineapple, onion, chili sauce, honey, Worchestershire, beef broth. They are in the oven now after a sear on all sides first. Will serve with brown rice and something green - haven't determined what that will be yet!
lacey - it cracked me up because it seemed that yoga was not at all relaxing/soothing/restorative for him! My Y has Zumba Gold which is geared toward a less frantic pace. I like the Zumba Tone class, every other musical interlude you use hand held weights with more basic arm movements. My PS has cleared me to start back to exercise - I am now allowed to walk. Of course, it has done nothing but rain since that pronouncement, so I need to walk on an indoor treadmill for the moment.
-
I think the doc was a little puzzled,,, it was the PA and I had to go over most of my back history. EKG was good, but of course of all days, today my heart decided not to race. Will get a halter monitor tomorrow and lots of lab test. Funny thing is...I had a good day today, went to work and several errands, and now tonight I am burning up with fever, chills. I might have the " I don't want to cook disease"
May be able to pull off a tossed salad.
-
The only times I ever had arrhythmias were when I had a severe cold with fever, secondary bacterial infection, was on Zithromax, or any combination thereof. Maybe your “grippe” (which was what old-school family docs used to call severe colds with fever that weren’t caused by the influenza virus) is the culprit.

So many Olivias!!! I have never known an Olivia, and to now know of three seems astonishing. My Olivia went to the pediatrician today and she is "perfect!" She is up to 9lbs, 9oz and is alert and responding well to this real life thing. I received a cute text from my daughter today affirming that I still am a baby whisperer. Yes, Olivia loves singing and fell right to sleep last night when Mom sang. Yes, Olivia is a bit bored and is far more attuned to her surroundings than one might expect for a one month old. I have ordered things that will hang from her seat and crib and hope they arrive immediately! Next up, I need to find all of my book boxes, the ones filled with my kid's childhood. I think we should start reading to her now.
Carrie, the heart thing is concerning, and why are hearts like cars? I mean, the darn car squeals for weeks but when you take it to the shop it remains silent. And your heart seems to have done the same thing. Perhaps Sandy's idea is valid in your case? That would be a good thing.
Yoga scares me. Way too much using of potentially lymphedemic appendages, and around here, so much of the yoga is hot. Not for me! I did laugh out loud at the thought of B trying to keep up with the class. I once tried an aerobics class. The music was loud and awful. I had no idea what was going on. And, as the final pisser, I had shin splints for about three weeks. I had even bought the kind of shoes required for the class, but that was my last one.
Dinner tonight was a lovely swordfish steak. I used the indoor grill to save time, served with roasted asparagus and some steamed Yukon potatoes diced and sautéed with some of the farmers' market Spring onions.
Lots of progress on the AirBNB "suite." I build a coffee table today. NOTE to the wise. Do NOT assemble complicated tables with HFS. I have a lovely double blister on my right thumb. Hope it does do ugly, HFS things. I am setting up the photo vignette with coffee machines, kettle, tea bags, granola, cups, saucers, bowls and plates. Tomorrow, we should get the futon put together [it has been in our loft storage] and I can finally take some pictures.
*susan*
-
Carrie, I presume your thyroid has been checked?
The "oldies" Zumba I referred to is indeed the Zumba Gold version.
-
Susan - I agree - start reading now. Even if you're only chanting Mother Goose rhymes.
-
just saying Hi. It isnt nice for the universe to give me a bad cold on top of the dang Kidney stones, is it? Well, thank you Universe, (via my DGD, Felicia) LOL - i hab a bad code in my nose......not to mention a pound of damk kleenex at my side.
-
fir your amusement. One stuffed up head on top of a hurting KS body. LOL
Pic of Felicia, whom i baby sat for a wee bit on Friday and wh so sweetly shared her cold with me.
Whee!
Getting up the stairs all by herself! Big girl!
Yes. That's just the way i feel. LOL
-
Moon, *#&#_$(#&# universe.
Feel better soon.
Just a couple of weeks short of the 3 year commemoration of the Yarnell Hill fire that killed 19 wild land firefighters....Today, the Tenderfoot fire is burning at Yarnell Hill. Sigh....
-
Aw, Monica, bummer. When Bob was in med school he seriously considered going into pediatrics--until an adorable towheaded 10-month old laid him low with the worst cold of his life. Kids are cute and cuddly little....plague vectors. But a world without them? Unbearable.
Getting that vaguely tired, not-quite-sore feeling in the back of my throat tonight (gee, great--I have a major gig Fri. night). Not quite to the point where I crave a quart of chocolate milk and no amount of water will put out the raw fire--as if it’s sealed into the throat. Can’t take my usual precautions--MO says no echinacea because it’s estrogenic, and no vit. C pills either. One orange didn’t make a dent.
For dinner I cut up some tricolor peppers, the bulbs of ramps from the bottom of the crisper (the tops had long ago become a science project), a scallion, a handful each of shiitakes and snow peas, and stir-fried them with some leftover rotisserie chicken. Made a sauce out of sesame oil, ponzu, fish sauce, mirin, mustard, five-spice powder and grated ginger & garlic. Pretty darn good--no need for a starch either. Dessert was a square of sugar-free dark blood-orange chocolate and an ounce of 2010 Signorello Cabernet.
-
moon - so sorry about the "code" on top of the KS - that is a bummer! Feel better soon! Can't believe how big your DGD is, man, time flies!
chisandy - you too!
-
Summer colds - YUK! Feel better you two!
-
I double that Nance
And I'm thinking of Carrie, Nance, Eric and others with elderly parents.
12 days to camp! 11 days until I move (around the corner to a bigger place)
I'm trying to keep this place suitable for viewing while packing. Ha!
Here is my baby
Sorry for the huge picture. I'll have to take it down soon before she discovers it. Unlike the beautiful babies, she can voice her objections. And will Haha Daddy is 1/2 Spanish
For dinner, something awful like canned beans with Sriracha, I'm trying to clean out the fridge. Thankfully there is a community garden pot luck tonight. I'm "cooking" watermelon with fresh mint.
-
Bedo, she’s a beauty!
-
Bedo - so glad to hear from you. Beautiful "baby". I know you're excited about camp. Will you have internet connections? Or should we tell you good luck for the summer now?
-
I've heard of cheese heads, but not pizza heads. :-)
