I wonder if that little "r" stands for recurrence. As in after recurrence patient is Stage IV?

"It's written with a lower-case "r" before the new stage to note that it's different from the stage at diagnosis." - From LongTermSurvivor's post above.

So even though I was initially diagnosed at Stage IA, I am currently diagnosed at Stage IIIC. But the proper way the write that would be rIIIC.

I think we're all fine doing what we're doing. I'm stage IV, my oncologist said so and that's all that matters. In his head he can treat me as stage I with a recurrence, but no one I tell would understand the severity of the issue if not for saying stage IV.

    MammaRay,

I believe that the forum title is in fact "Stage IV and Metastatic Breast Cancer ONLY" We asked for this change several years ago so that the forum title would reflect all the people who post here. I consider myself part of the Metastatic Breast Cancer portion of that title. The only was added later to discourage people who had no distant mets from posting here about their fears about being us.

    Mamma Ray,

oh my. No reason to feel foolish. The things we see the most often are the thing we hardly notice. To prove my point, move a chair around in your kitchen, adjust the island to a new place, or put the dishes in a new cabinet. Amazing how quickly it becomes clear that we are often on auto-pilot! :-)
