Prostheses time frame?

Options

I had a BMX five weeks ago and this week I went back to work. I imagined that I would be wearing prostheses most of the time but so far I can only tolerate them a few hours. I'm wondering how long it took other women before you could wear yours all day? I've read that some women can put them on and just forget about them but right now that is hard to imagine.

You are still relatively early in the healing process. Most fitters don't even recommend even getting fitted for silicone breast forms for six-eight weeks, but that doesn't mean you'd be comfortable in them all day right away. I couldn't tolerate anything for long at five weeks. It will definitely get better, but hard to say how soon. Can you wear the light post-surgery puffs to tide you over?

Erica-it's weird but they're not actually any more confortable for me though I know they are for many women.

my surgery was almost 3 months and I can't wear them yet. I bought light weight ones and maybe wear once a week for social event. While my scars are healing well my chest still gets sore and tight and even wearing a genie bra gets uncomfortable after hours. It bothered me at first going back to work but I wear loose clothes & scarves anyway so I feel less exposed. As summer approaches I am not so sure as clothing options will need to change and I want to start water walking and swimming when I can but I am feeling and looking well overall so no complaints. I think we all heal differently. Hang in there

I had UMX no recon Feb. 17. BS said to call in May for Rx for prosthetic and until then to wear the puff. Upon discharge, the hospital gave me both a mastectomy bra and pocketed camisole to wear. I found the bra rode up too much and was very uncomfortable, so I've been wearing the camisole exclusively. It's much more comfortable and more easily adjusted if necessary for "ride up" which isn't as bad as with the bra for me. Saw my MO yesterday and she was surprised I wasn't wearing the bra, but I told her it was just too uncomfortable at least until I get the actual prosthetic.

I'm not wearing prostheses at all yet. I have a horrible recovery from my BMX and only got complete skin healing about 2 weeks ago (11 weeks healing time, ugh!) I am still tender at the bra line. It's weird that I can't really feel much on my chest, but if I put anything on my chest, like bath poofies, it is very uncomfortable and scratchy. At this point, I'm strongly considering just going flat. At my age (59), nobody is looking at my chest and if they do notice, they have the common sense not to say anything. If I was a younger woman, this would probably bother me a lot more.

I have yet to find a bra that isn't uncomfortable immediately.

I think it took me around a year before I could wear one, and then (and still) only in the amoena Hannah post-surgical camisole because the elastic is only in the front - otherwise it is also immediately uncomfortable for me like ksusan. Until then I pinned a lightweight puff into a cami without any lining or structure and hoped it didn't move around too much. I wore a lot of big shirts and scarves. It's really unfortunate that the surgeons don't mention the possibility of a prolonged time frame and the fact that finding a prosthesis / bra that works is a considerable challenge for some women. I swear some of the mastectomy bras out there seem like they've been designed by someone who's never dealt with an actual woman who's had a mastectomy. Edited to add I did not have radiation but do have trunk and arm lymphedema.

My BS and his NPs gave me conflicting info, some said 4 weeks and some said 6 weeks post surgery for prosthetic and mastectomy bras. I did wear the post-mastectomy camisoles by Amoena, but the one I got had this band for adhering the drain pockets that really bothered me. So I used the binding more or just ribbed tanks that I already had. I'm small so it worked.

I also bought some padded/built in bra tanks from Uniqlo. There's no pocket, but I'm small enough to make my left (uni on left) work without any stuffing.

I did get fitted last week and have wore the bra with the foob, it was so expensive and I’m glad insurance covered it. I can only wear it for a couple of hours before I start to feel bothered by it.

I went read on another thread about Coobie bras and bought a set from Amazon. They are pretty comfy. No hooks, they pull over. I also don't need to put my foob in those.

So in short, I think it is better to wait for the silicone prosthetic.
