Hi,

I'm wondering if any of you are having significant pectoris (directly beneath the breast) muscle tightness post radiation. If so, have you done anything for it? I have been trying to stretch and massage the muscle and am considering seeking some sort of professional assistance (physical therapy???).

Thx,

Moj

Hi Moj, I didn't have that, but it would seem that physical therapy sure might help.  Talk to your rad onc, they are pretty good about what does and does not work.

Would it be unusual to feel sick or tired from radiation more than a week after it is over?  I just felt so out of it the last few days.  I only had the 5 day radiation and it ended about 10 days before I starting feeling super extra tired and even a little nausous.

Kind of glad I didnt start the Arimidex yet because I would swear that was what was wrong with me.

Of coures I guess I will always fear now that it is cancer.

    Hi Bliz:

I finished 25 treatments nearly a month ago. I feel as drained as I did from chemo, ugh! I sooooo wish it would at least partially go away. Sick of feeling sick.

    Hugs,

I am not sure if I am feeling this way from the radiation or something else.  I see the rad onc tomorrow. I felt okay during treatment.  Even the breast hurts more now.  Weird. So I guess it is not uncommon to have symptoms 2 weeks after treatment.

Bliz...I don't know about actually feeling sick post-rads, but I was advised that since the radiation continues to be effective and be operating in your body for 4-6 weeks following treatments, I shouldn't take antioxidants or in any way change the routine I had throughout treatment. To me, that says that our bodies are still reacting to the rads, etc. It is also my understanding that radiation treatment is so effective because it is cumulative, so it makes sense that your greatest sense of fatigue should come at the end.

Thanks for the info, Marin.  In a way I was hoping it was the rads, just so I wouldnt have one more freaking thing going on. I will see what the rad onc says tomorrow, too.

Bliz - I only had the five day radation, and ended July 28. So its two months and I am still tired and out of sorts, with a persistent ache on that side. My radiation oncologist shrugged this off as an expected effect. Hope you feel better sooner than that!

Wow, thanks for telling me that, Fireweed. Since I felt okay during and it was the shorter version, I thought I wouldnt have any side effects. Duh!!

Did anyone else feel kind of bloated, not just in the breast?  I got real bloated during radiation for a couple of day, then would sweat it out and be okay.

Also I noticed the breast got swollen after the treatment and even a little more sensitive.  But it all happened several days, almost two weeks after the treatment.  Weird.

I will see the rad onc tomorrow.

    Hi Moj,

I finished radiation in February and still have a muscle tightness problem.

The physio people at the hospital and my lymph massage therapists told me that radiation can shrink the fascia that surrounds the muscle, giving an incredibly tight feeling.

In my case, my whole shoulder and clavicle area has shrunk, but I'm feeling the effect in my wrist. Like you, I've got muscle tightness under the breast too (in my case where the breast would have been).

I'm told that fascia doesn't really respond to stretching and straining, but requires a gentler approach. I've had some success with swedish massage to that whole quadrant of the body, and also with rolfing.

Rolfing is a technique that concentrates on fascia. I went to a rolfer who is known to be excellent and intuitive and it helped a lot. I used to feel the need to stretch every 10 minutes or so, but she managed to get rid of that feeling in my chest. Also, my chest was incredibly hard to the touch, but is now softer and feels more like a human body. Rolfers normally want to do this whole series of 10 treatments on you, but I explained my situation and asked her to try to apply her knowledge to it.

I also find it has helped to keep my upper body moving with exercise. I do both Tae Bo (because it has a lot of arm and torso movement) and yoga.

That being said, I've had no success with the shoulder/clavicle tightness causing my wrist problem. Unfortunately, this is one side effect of radiation that nobody seems to have any awareness of, not to mention solutions for. Basically you've got to explore on your own, and it's very hit and miss. The chest seems to be more amenable to treatment though.

Good luck and I'd love to hear if anything works for you.

    Darya

Rad once said everything looked good today and it was not unusual to feel tired and nauseous even weeks after the 5 day treatment.  So I plunge forward.

Thanks for the information Darya. I have been doing daily massage on myself with some recommendation from a PT friend of mine. I'm still not ready to set up any regular appointments with anyone (except my massage therapist Laughing). I wish you the best of luck with your tightness as well.

    Hi all,

I just finished radiation 3 weeks ago, following surgery in May and chemo starting in January. I too am disappointed that radiation has had the side effect of fatique and the burn/tightness even after 3 weeks but I have been told that it is cumulative--wow! I wanted to pass on the success I have had with yoga. I have been practicing yoga throughout all of my treatments and it has made a difference. My PT was amazed at the movement I achieved post surgery, and it gave me energy through chemo. I am hoping it will also get me through radiation. Has anyone had implants put in after radiation (I have expanders now)? Anything that I should be aware of?

Yoga has made a huge difference for me.  I was never 'into' youga before,b ut thought it a gentle way to re-enter the world of exercise.  I go twice a week and find it very beneficial....

I finished my rads in January ...took some time to recover and started working out....my body was so tight on the left (where I had my rads) that I hurt my neck and shoulder. I reduced my workouts and went to an Osteopath....he is helping...including physical therapy. Rads cause more side effects then they tell you...I am 55 so maybe it hit me harder. I also do yoga....it helps.

    Hang in there, H

I have had severe tightening post radiation. I have found that a deep massage on the area helps quite a bit. It is something that I have to have done weekly to keep the relief. I spoke to my radiologist oncologist and he wrote a prescription for massage along with prescribing flexeril if it gets too tight. I also recently found that the rightness continued to get tighter on Arimidex. They just changed my medications and it is loosening???

Mshea, I have tightness too, I thought it was just the muscle, but after reading the posts above It sounds like the fascia is involved too. I've been stretching every day and notice that if I skip a few days I'm super tight. I also try to massage the area too. It affects the entire area that was radiated. What did your MO change your meds to?

Hi, I had that IRON bra feeling which was pain and TIGHT,TIGHT,TIGHTNEESS in my arm and shoulder which was avful after rads. Was diagnosed with radiation fibrosis, had 120 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy treatments? My skin was also stiff and woody, like boot leather. After the HBOT treatments my skin went back to 95% of normal and the tightness finally is much better. Before HBOT I did three or four months of Physical therapy, twice a week. Made absolutely no difference to the tightness in my arm and shoulder. I would stretch and stretch because the tightness was driving me around the bend. The RO burned me to horrible crisp, she never told me about HBOT. I wish she had, would have saved me a year of misery. Radiation Fibrosis is an accepted diagnosis by Medicare, but they call it soft tissue radio necrosis. Also I am using Pentoxifylline and Vitamin E. Had some fat grafting as part of reconstruction as well which probably helped too.

macb04, I just replied to your PM. Now I see what HBOT means! Good for you that the therapy worked! Did you have trouble getting the insurance to pay for it? 120 treatments is a lot. Wow! That's a lot of time invested. I work full time. I don't think we have this available in my local area. I'm sure I would have to drive 45 minutes to a larger medical center. Just some scattered thoughts running through my head!

    Thanks for the input

I asked my RO about Pentoxifilne and she said the SEs were bad, however I had not read anything about terrible SEs. I'm sure she thought I was crazy. I do take Vitamin E. At least I can get my hands on it and it is proven to help. What strength E do you take?

I'm also going to get fat grafting in August as part of my lumpectomy reconstruction. The doctor I am considering places some in the muscle as well. I'm hoping this will help.

I would love to have HBOT along with my fat grafting recovery

Hi Suz-Q, sorry, just saw the PM you sent me first, but sent you links about HBOT and Pentoxifylline. Both things are usually well tolerated, they were just fine by me. Yeah, I know that HBOT is a big time commitment, I was only working about 20 hours per week when I got that. I had fat grafting too, 5 times, but lost most of the fat to reabsorption and 2 severe infections. The fat grafting also probably helped heal the rad damage, even though most of it didn't stay. I don't think the PS I had at that time knew what he was doing. Hopefully you will have a much more sucessful experience than me.

I finished my rads the end of February and noticed the tightening starting by the end of March, it got worse by the end of April so I went to my RO who said "no I don't think cancer back you just stretch" looked at me funny when I told him I had read how it can shrink the muscle & tissue. Anyhow after a couple more weeks I saw my PCP and he prescribed some physical therapy. Still ongoing but am glad to say I have my full range of motion back and am working on strength. My shoulder joint seems sore but that could be the Anastrozole. I do still have a thick muscle in my peck area but it has gotten a little smaller with therapy. I go to see my MO on the 29th and am going to ask for a diuretic as I get swelling in my ankles and knees, not every day but some days it is bad. Have been fighting borderline high blood pressure since surgery so I want to ask about that. If the Anastrozole is making my BP & ankles an issue maybe she will switch me brands. Hot flashes and sleeping issues have been on going. I take my med in the morning and most "meltdowns" occur at night, I am sure that has something to do with my sleep issues.

I love being able to read the boards on this site. They have been a big help to me in my recovery. Thank you for a place to write, vent and cry during this awful thing called Breast Cancer.

1957-2057, My RO had me do PT/OT before she prescribed the Pentoxifylline and Vit. E. It seem like we have to jump through hoops before we can get the treatment we need. I recently found out the muscle tightness caused by radiation occurs at the 3-6 month mark after finishing radiation treatment. ASCO guidelines for suvivorship mentions letting patients have Pentoxifylline and Vit E. Your shoulder is probably sore from the muscle tightness. All the stretching in the world is not going to heal your radiation damaged muscles.

I'm already on high blood pressure meds and mine has gone down since I've been on the Pentoxifylline. I do not have any swelling due to Anastrozole. I do work out several times a week. I get a few mild hot flashes and a small amount of joint pain, but not enough to take anything for. Exercise is my drug of choice!

I hope the information you find on Breastcancer.org will help you be prepared for your next doctor visit.

    Good Luck!

why do our ROs not tell us about nor prescribe pentoxifylline? How many of us would have so much more comfort and less pain and disfigurement if they would? I just don't get it. It seems like such a simple preventative

Firni, it can help older damage but you may need to be on it for 2-3 years.

My rad onc suggested a trip to the rehab doc who wants to do botox injections into my shrunken right pec muscle to relax it. I have lost the range of motion in my right arm after radiation. It was ok before. Anybody had any experience with this type of treatment? Suz-Q doesn't seem to think a radiation damaged muscle can be restored.

LMMax, On the contrary, I do believe radiation damage can be somewhat healed and improved, but not through stretching and PT. At least not for me. If you read further, I said to Firni that older damage could be improved with Pentoxifilne + Vit E, but it would take longer. I just had my first fat transfer the the radiated breast in hopes that it will help heal the damage too! We're all here to figure this stuff out and support one another!

My Chest muscle is so tight and stuck to chest wall. I've tried everything. Physical therapy , Myofacial therapy. The plastic surgeon had to remove my temporary extenders as the left side became completely capsulated. I have nerve damage and the pain is miserable! Not one doctor can help me in the Orlando Area. Getting out of bed in the morning is so hard as I hurt and stiff. I'm 55 and not ever going to be a candidate for reconstruction. All I want is this chest tightness and burning, stinging, deep muscle pain to go away. Is there not a surgery or procedure that could loosen this tightness across my chest. It's been 15 months since surgery masectomy. Chemo and 36 rounds of radiation. Removal of extenders and Alloderm. I'm miserable and all the doctors except my pain doctor have released me and basically told me there is nothing we can do. I've been deserted and I'm distraught Cancer sucks and pain every day sucks so bad!!!

    Ixcarr,

Please look into Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy(HBOT) I had severe Radiation Fibrosis. Tight, TIGHT, TIGHT! !!. My skin was just like boot leather, thick and woody. Was miserable, tried PT, stretching every day to no avail. Got fat grafting and HBOT and now my skin is nearly normal. I also use Oral Pentoxifylline/Vitamin E and a specially Compounded Prescription Pentoxifylline 5%/Vitamin E 1% Cream .

Here is a link for a HBOT Center in Orlando that treats Radation Fibrosis, which is called Soft Tissue Radionecrosis by Medicare, which also pays for it.
