I really want to know how they get all those kittens to look the same way at the same time. Mine won't hold still long enough to get a photo individually. They look too young to train.

Ahhh what a lovely cat BigBoy is. Amazing how he is so big and healthy as a feral - the neighbourhood must be looking after him well.

Let's put it this way, he doesn't miss too many meals! I have seen him intimidate some of the cats by his size alone. He will eat almost all of what I put out if he's around and there are 2-3 other houses that put food out for the colony. A neighbor jogs in the area and has seen him in other parts of the neighborhood on porches. He keeps himself very clean to the point I thought he was someone's pet but he is very skittish. His paws are massive, reminds me of dog paws. I'll try and get a picture of them. We had a cat that was polydactyl but nothing like Big Boy's.

Wren - it's a PhotoShop job. Not a good one, either. But it's cute!

Joining in at the suggestion of feelingfeline. Thanks! I've long considered myself a dog person with four and a spare dogs at home. However in the past year or so we've established a feral colony in our barn and work with a local rescue. So now I guess I'm a dog and cat person! We have one old cat in town who has alopecia and is losing her hair on her back. I'm going to have to dress her like Giggy on TRHW of Beverly Hills soon. At our farm in the barn we have six rescues and one stray. The stray is a big tom much like BigBoy. He is the most beautiful thing. So far he has alluded capture in my humane trap. We call him Duane, because he is a ramblin' man. (After Duane Allmon). You've got "Lord I was born a ramblin' man . . ." in your head now, right?

    Welcome FarmerLucy!

There was a joke on this thread some time back about:

How come if you have several cats you are seen as a CRAZY CAT LADY, but if you have several cats and a dog you are seen as an ANIMAL PERSON?

Guess you are an animal person!

Lucky ferals to have you looking out for them!

Any chance you could capture Duane with your camera? Who is bigger, BigBoy or Duane?

Got him! I was moving some hay around and noticed him hiding. He's gonna get neutered and vaccinated tomorrow. Can you say "snip, snip?"image

Ah wow. Good luck Duane! XXX

Years ago I lived for a year in Islington (UK), suburb of London. Loads of ferals. There was a feral rescue group (doing TNR) that I supported. They were known as SNIP.

You have to be aware pussy is a pet name for cat in European English. Society for Neutering Islington's Pussies.

(y'all falling about laughing?) Well I still have my SNIP sweatshirt! It must be (eek) 29 years old now.

The TNR group here had a shirt that said "sexless in Seattle until every cat has a home". We have an organization, Alley Cat Project, that will take ferals from the shelter and find new homes for them. A fair number tame down and are adopted.

    Ouch, Duane!

I know most say ferals can't be domesticated but I've noticed that when you feed them long enough they want to wrap around you or want to come into the house. They are definitely not as skittish of the ones who show kindness. Good th hear it is possible. A few years back, a feral seemed to have sprained a leg. We called animal rescue and they would not come out because the cat was feral. I thought that was cruel. Not too long after that a neighbor friend and started feeding them. Turns out that at least five houses feed them. The vet in the Washinton Post is completely against that.

Here is Guard Cat doing his thing at my front door.

Sorry for the size. Can't figure out how to downsize on the iPad.

The first domesticated cats were ferals!!

As FarmerLucy mentioned about Duane, some cats living on their wits are strays rather than born feral.

    I'm with you Kath!

    Kindness is never wasted.

Love the logo for SNIP International. I feel sorry for poor Duane, he's been in the trap now for 18 hours. I guess I'll take him to my regular vet instead of the spay/neuter clinic since it is open early and closer. Looks like Guard Cat has double tipped ears. Does the Washington Post vet not like feeding strays because it allows them to be healthier and propagate?

Yes, somehow he got double tipped. The Post vet is against feeding them because they carry toxoplasmosis and toxocariasis. During the past two summers the female scratches herself raw around her ears and on her nose. Once last summer I saw her scratch herself and a dark cloud rose above her neck. Only time I've seen that happen so I figured she gets fleas real bad. The males she hangs with don't seem to be affected the same way. Trying to figure out a way to get flea spray on her without causing trauma. Also noticed when she came back from her neutering and abortion that she had worms. Periodically I see her passing one so I put over the counter deworming drops on the soft food I put out. It's hard to tell how much she gets as the food is initially consumed by her and Guard Cat followed by Big Boy and there is a shy cat that comes as well. I'm lucky my neighbor feeds several different cats and an opossum or two.

I read a blog called breakingcatnews.com. It's 3 cats who have a news program. The woman had a baby and the cats' reactions were really cute. One had that 'I'll protect you all your life' reaction.

This is Stevie. He's a foster fail (not mine!). He's been back at Kitten Inn this week waiting to be desexed, and his "mom" messages constantly for updates. So, Susan, who runs Kitten Inn, decided to torture "mom" a bit. Stevie is back from the vet but "mom" had to work late tonight. So Susan has been posting these pictures. :)

He is fine; he's a bit of a goofball kitten and super mellow and snuggly. :)

At any rate, he's cute as in a dress!

After several posts about Stevie, he's home and his new owners said "he's free of cross-dressing hell". So that led to another conversation, which led to:

    Oh my, too funny!

Reminded me of the time when a girlfriend of DS found two kittens who had wandered away from their mom. She took them to the vet who proclaimed the small one as male and the larger one female. Turned out "Chloe" was a big tom and the alpha male.

Think VERY small dogs. Spookie is 8#, wears a size S. There are smaller sizes.

Those are actually doll dresses. :) Stevie was still slightly stoned from being out when he was neutered. He is a mellow little dude even without being stoned. Apparently he just went limp and didn't fight being dressed up at all.
