Anyone in Dallas, TX or know of a local support group?

Just wondering if anyone lives in or near Dallas, TX and/or knows of a local support group. I was recently diagnosed (Dec 22nd 2015) and have yet to speak to another woman in person who has had or gone through breast cancer (besides 2 of my doctors, which was great, but that doesn't help on a daily basis
I definitely think a support group would help as well. Hoping I have some fellow sisters on here that are in my neck of the woods.

Ayr, I am in east dallas.
-
I'm in Far East Dallas, but I'm just high risk. Not BC
-
Ayr - Sorry I'm not on your side of the metroplex. I'm NW of Ft Worth.
Do you have a nurse navigator that might give you some more ideas? If you are having treatment at a major hospital especially one a part of the big networks I'd think a support group could be found. I was working full time my 1st year of treatment so was unable to attend any support meetings. Since then I use BCO for my major support.
If you have a place in mind hospital wise you can always cold call them.
What can we do here to support you? Read your question on Lump. Lounge. I did not realize they treat breast CA with proton therapy. You must mean the new Texas Oncology one in Irving.
I googled "breast cancer support Dallas TX" and found a bunch of hits. And the American Cancer Society too is a good resource.
I know that the nurse navigator at Baylor All Saints in Ft Worth is available to anyone regardless of where treatment is obtained - straight from their website. I would think this would be true system wide. Must admit I'm a bit biased - where I was treated.
Let us know what we can do to help!

You might be interested in getting an Immerman Angel mentor. It is an easy process. Just go to their website and sign up. They'll match you with someone about your age and stage who is farther down the recovery road.
-
ayr, The American Cancer Society has a "Reach to Recovery" program for BC patients. They match you up with a person who has a like DX and age, that has been through recovery. There is a group in Central Texas called the Breast Cancer Resource Center also, but not sure what areas they cover. Best wishes!
-
Thank you all for replying! I am checking out all suggestions mentioned. I am also going to contact the nurse navigator this next week and see how she can help.

Medical City Dallas has a very good one. I went to it for a year after my BMX in 2012. Wonderful sweet ladies some in all stages. They serve a lite dinner and meet once a month at the hospital on Forest and Central.

I'm in Allen and haven't had much luck finding anything, let me know if these avenues help! Or Im always up for coffee, I'm scared to death of my upcoming surgery!

I live 60 miles north of Dallas but am receiving medical care and neoadjuvant treatment in Dallas. I too have only discussed my breast cancer with my medical team. It might be helpful to talk to someone else who is actually undergoing treatment currently. I read the blogs and discussion boards but am reluctant to post since I am just finding my way through this diagnosis. Sometimes I feel very isolated especially since I live and work in a small community.

Maybe one day we can have a "Dallas area" meet up.
-
Yes! Great idea! I would definitely be interested. It would not have to be anything formal or highly organized.

After a whole lot of searching I found the old "Texas" thread. I don't think many in this neck of the woods are still active except for MelissaDallas. Last posting was almost 2 years ago. The ladies down near Austin have their own meetup thread.
https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/34/topics...
I'll put something on there and see if I get any takers.
-
OK it is posted on there and did show up in Active Topics. I know a few are around by searching their profiles but I think there were only 1 maybe 2 small meetups probably in 2013. We'll see what we get. And though I do live NW of Ft Worth I have no problem navigating Dallas. My DD lives in Euless so I can stay overnight there without driving all the way out here. Would love to meet up with some of you.

I would love to do a meet up!!

In the same building, but on the bottom floor, of Texas Oncology behind Presbyterian Dallas Hosital is a American Cancer Society office. Has a big red door. There are support groups and free activities for people that have been diagnoised with any type of cancer, as well as care givers. Big breast cancer group. The activities are free. I am personally looking for TNBC support group in Dallas. Because it is 'different' , I really want some help from those that are dealing with this type. Anyone know of group?
I have also heard that the JCC on Northaven in Dallas has a very good group and it is open to non members. It's a great facility and a woman I met getting chemo just recently told me about it.
-
I'm in too, just let me know how I can help!

I am in North Dallas and happy to talk to you privately and doing a meet-up. I am 3+ weeks post-BMX no recon & overwhelmed, frustrated & scared by not knowing what is normal healing process and because if this site feel I have become considered a "difficult" patient for asking questions and challenging some decisions. Weekends usually best for me. Thanks.
-
I didn't have BMX but willing to listen to your questions. I would bet weekends would be best for most. I'm retired so my planning would more involve if DD has plans since I would most likely stay over there. I'm NW of Ft Worth. I re-negotiated Dallas around North Park in late fall. Been years since I've been there but DD had a flight out of Love Field to visit a friend. We lived for several years off Skillman (mid 70s) and then in Garland not far from where the tornado was.
ayr - we seem to have hijacked your thread. Any luck finding any formalized local support?
-
@ayr1016 feel free to PM me.
-
Hey - it's a month later, but I'm another Dallasite. My office is in East Dallas, and I live in Lake Highlands. Sounds like there are a few of us in this general area. Ayr, I'm also 41 and was diagnosed in December. I would definitely be up for a meetup sometime!
-
I also posted this in another thread and want to share here as well.

kellychameleon, I live in Far East Dallas. I work at Central & Beltline in Richardson and come through Lake Highlands every day coming & going.
-
I live in North Dallas and work near the Galleria.

I have just spent entire day at UTSW for my fourth opinion. Would love a full on discussion of options, fears, frustrations....I think my husband is on overload. Why don't we pick a Starbucks or La Madaleine and meet up? We could either do along LBJ or another major highway. I was in the original group under a different name but it was a great group of women. Would love to meet all of you.
-
Happy to meet but during the week is tough for me so really prefer to do weekend as I am still doing PT 2x a week & getting to work late & a mindful meditation class one weeknight but of all weeknights Monday is the least crazy for me if that works.
There is La Madeline on Preston/Forest or Arapaho/BeltLine or Starbucks in multiple locations.
I can meet this Saturday or Sunday afternoon after 2 but not again until weekend of April 9th.
Going to visit my mom in Florida weekend of 3/18 (scared - first flight since surgery - flying alone), going to the event above on 3/26 & Sunday is Eatser Sunday, my husband turns 60 on 4/3 and I am throwing him a surprise party so have too much to do the day before.
8-week since surgery tomorrow!
Let me know.

Yes, I would love to still meet up. I live in far East Dallas but work in Richardson (near Cottonwood Park). What times/Days work best for everyone? Balthus, I could do weekend and/or week days.
-
I live in Rowlett, and work in Richardson on Renner and 75. Im in for any meet ups! Im a newbie with BMX scheduled for 3/30!!!
-
Weekdays are easier for me, but if a weekend is the consensus, I can make it work. My office is much easier to escape than my 3 and 6 year olds!
