Welcome to the happiest thread on BCO!

Nobody wants to maintain the thread but we can't live in the past forever! I feel I should take a turn rather than just enjoying the company. I'm not even sure I know how to do the editing of the main post, but I'll learn!

We've had a lively conversation in the Run thread in the past, with busy times and lulls, about running through chemo, running bras, fitness watches, training regimens, physiotherapy, and so forth.

This thread is for anybody that's "running". "Running" is not a pace and it's not a distance. It's an intention and an action to challenge ourselves. Truth be told, there are times when walking is "running", and a few shuffling laps of the surgery ward a day after mastectomy is not much use for the body, but of immeasurable value to the mind. I recall a management trainer at a former workplace saying, "if a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing badly, if that's the only way you can do it." We've never judged pace or distance here. Some who will visit the thread are in Week 1 Couch-to-5K and some are veteran marathoners, and there's something to learn from everyone. We celebrate heart. We also commiserate with those tough outings, injuries, and recovering from surgeries and other treatments. Some people do lots of run events, and others don't ever do the events. That's okay, but we traditionally maintain a running event calendar at the top of the thread to cheer on those who are doing the events, and to encourage those who are "on the fence" about whether to do one.

I'll try my best to keep the run calendar up to date at least every week or so, if everyone can try to pitch in with welcoming new posters and answering questions.

Let's keep up the thread for 2016! Come for the encouragement and stay for the celebrations!

Thank you for starting a new thread! I've been a lifelong runner but chemo and surgery have been rough going for motivation. I did chemo, surgery, and now chemo again so I'm feeling a bit downhearted. I'm joining this thread in hopes it raises my motivation again and gets me back out there doing what I love. Husband and I are moving from NYC to Colorado in about 6 weeks so my goal is to run a 10k once I'm there! A long cry from my former marathons, but a step in the right direction!

My external motivation for running has been audio books. I save my favorite books and only let myself listen to them when I run. I keeps me motivated to go out at least a little bit so that I can find out what happens next. Currently listening to The Girl on the Train.

What helps to motivate you all when you're tired/crabby/hungry/in pain/everything else with cancer?

Hi Ladies! My motivation has been virtural races to get me through the winter. After doing the "Run Like A Diva" virtual race in December I wondered if there were other virtual races out there. The distances range from 5K to Half Marathon and I love earning "Bling" and race bibs. One of the sources for these races are www.goneforarun.com. You usually have a particular week to complete the "race" and post your pic and results to their Facebook page.

I also love the app Rock My Run, you can download different music mixes for free.

    Happy running sisters!

Welcome MissBee123 and SweetThing. Lots of bling fans here (e.g., my avatar!)

I'm deaf so all my running is silent. I like to run where there is stuff to look at - that is my visual sound track. While event runs are good for that, but unfortunately I am rather lax with training where that is absent. Sometimes that means my training for a Half is little more than the previous Half! I have a fairly interesting 5K route near where I'm currently based, but hard to train past 5K unless I'm on a business trip and running for sightseeing purposes. (Love doing that.)

Hello, thank you for starting the new running thread. I can't say that I'm technically new here because I'm a 17 year breast cancer survivor that has had other primary cancer diagnoses. My upcoming bilateral mastectomy will be my 5th surgery, and hopefully, final surgery for cancer. Go me. hehe

I was doing really good on increasing my distance and pace up until mid-December. I was able to do 9 miles with no problem but then my mother, who lives with me, broke her wrist and then just as I was getting ready to start up again, I got the flu. So I'm hoping that this coming week I can get started again. I signed up for the Tinkerbell Half Marathon and may sign up for the 5K as well. I've ordered a steampunk style running tutu for the Tinkerbell marathon that I'm going to hang on my wall as motivation to get up and move after my surgery.

"Steampunk style running tutu"? Sounds spectacular! My kind of thing!

I bought these for my WDW Half. First pair of tights ever gaudy enough to wear without skirt over top to hide my butt! (And I also have these, both tights and capris.)

Those tights are awesome! I might have to buy a pair. I had no idea activewear like that existed. I'd bought some leggings for the DL 5K from an etsy store that makes ravewear. They were a little warm for September but very stretchy. But then I found a lady on etsy who makes outfits for the disney runs and the cost is pretty equal to ordering athletic wear. She'll custom make to your measurements, so she's holding onto an outfit I had ordered previously for the Princess Half until after my surgery. I'm going from a 40D to flat, so I want to make sure that it doesn't hang too much.

Okay, I'm going to go run around the Rose Bowl tomorrow evening. I was going to put "going to try to go run" but changed that to a definitive verb. ;)

I'm really glad I found this thread!

CW-X tights are SUPER compress-y. You have to go by the height-weight table and trust them. I hold them up and they look like baby clothes. They are actually functional coverings that target support for specific joints, sort of like taping. I think some others on the thread also like them. Track Shack has them at the runDisney expo in Orlando; not sure they exhibit in Anaheim because Fit2Run is the official fitness store. In addition to support for the hip joint, I find it helps to cut the jiggle factor especially running over an hour. Keep all the movement going forward instead of wobbling all over the place.

The only down side is that if you have to make a bathroom stop after you're all sweaty during the run, it is like wrestling a boa constrictor to get them back on. Fun! One of my greatest triumphs of the recent WDWHalf was not needing a potty stop after going to the corral.

Running around the Rose Bowl sounds terrific! I have to get back out there, but hoping the Florida cold snap ends soon.

Hi everyone!! I just did the Disneyland Star Wars 5k, 10k, and half this weekend. ( half not on the above list cause it was an after thought and joined a charity sort of last min )

originally signed up for the 10k only then our friend who is rather heavy ( 250+) signed up for the 5k. So we decided she needed my dorky energy to keep her moving. she was " done " by the time we arrived IN the corral ( new way to get to corrals .. more on that in a min) ..so i bounced and skipped and high fived the cast members and engaged her in conversation to distract her.. and SUCCESS she made it!! and she loudly announced that she was NOT the last person in!! We were very proud of her and she was very proud of herself. cause really.. from hotel to corral, then race and back to hotel.. she walked about 6miles.. more than she has planned :)

then onto my half.. 3rd day at 3am for my 3rd race... 5k i was ok, 10k i was very sleepy, half.... bright eyed * shrug* this was also my first half alone. I always have a friend or my husband with me. I did end up finding a friend in my corral :):) we walked the park together ( was all foggy so everything was all wet and disneyland gets very slippery..so I walked) 4 miles later when we got out of disneyland .. I said see ya and I took off. The 501st ( Star Wars costuming group) and other groups were on the course. Im part of this group so I have about 15 friends on course including my husband! So my motivation was to get to them :) I was surprising myself with how well I was doing ( alone etc..) and got to them.. half hugged them.. bear hugged the husband.. took off again.. and then... energy level fading.. puttering out.. Husband texts me " you are on to get a PR you are doing great!" and off I went.. I PR'ed!!! for me this time is awesome 3:14:58 giddy after the race.. husband brought me breakfast and we took a quick nap and off too....CLUB 33!!! then we even got to go in to 1901! we stayed in the park til midnight.. nothing sore.. walking just fine!! phone said I did 30 miles when we got back to the room. so fri 15 miles, sat 22 miles, sun 30 miles! Im still on the runDisney high :):) Im signed up for Darkside in wdw and ill get my Kessel Run medal ( holy crap that thing is as big as my phone!)

now for you runDisney people: everything is blocked. there is no more staying at Paradise Pier and walking into the corral. you have to be funneled thru bag check in downtown disney( they check the tiny waist belts too) then funneled into family area with the stage, when you go to walk to the corral, this race .. everyone.. turned right to get to them...alll corrals were in a line...so A had staff there to make sure everyone was A etc... so if you were back of the pack or late.. you had to walk alllllllll the way down disney drive past paradise to get INTO your corral.. to turn around and run back that way for the start. before there were sections and split between abc in a line in the front, de on one side on the road, and fg on the other... now its like left hand exits on a fwy. it made it smooth and streamlined BUT you need to allow the time to do this. the race info says to be IN the corral by 4am. we got in by 440 and corrals were only a handful of people. I hope that helps a few of you :):)

Cupcaker- I forgot to add.. I have those same compression pants.. I LOVE THEM. I ran in the capris for the half and then I usually wear them for recovery as well :) I wear a small cause i have soccer thighs but according to their chart I should be an xs.. there is no way.. they are def snug :p

Panthrah that was a great report!

I agree with you on the corral death-march - They have been like that the past couple of DLHM. (I have switched to the Hilton anyway. Paradise Pier went up too much in price after the first couple I did, and I'm Diamond at Hilton so get a decent room for less than half the PP price.)

Interesting you found this slowed the corral-filling. I have arrived at or before the appointed time to find the corrals completely full and not just spaced-apart full but jam-packed full. Maybe there were a lot of first-time runDisney people due to the Star Wars theme. DLHM has a lot of repeaters.

The WDW Half had bag check that even inspected my clear, open ziploc sandwich bag with one banana and half a bottle of water in it! Granted it did not take them long, but glad they are being vigilant.

Good of you to coach your friend through the 5K. Probably made it fun for you too.

    (So jealous of Club 33!)

PS Added your Half to the top post.

Thanks :) because I did do good ( for me) Ive been looking in to local, flat, cheap races to see how I do when there is not funneling or bottlenecks around the park. where its just open the whole time :) There is one on Mothers day.. it might happen.. not sure yet.

By the way.. the Tinkerbell Half is STILL open.. the challenge is gone but the half has space.. its an anniversay year so its a fancier medal :)

I ran the Tropical 5k this morning. It was great! I ran faster and felt better than I did at this time last year, which was just before I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My time was 43:52, which is just over a 14-minute mile.

    And way to go, scrunchthecat!

(I bet a lot of people are envious of the dry ground and snowless skies in your photos. It's chilly in Orlando, but I wouldn't trade it for the weather at home!)

Hi! 2014 and 2015 we're my best years running. I was placing 2nd and 3rd in my age division for 5 and 10ks. I was probably in my best shape last year before cancer.

I just had the exchange surgery so want to be careful with the implant rotating. Its going to take awhile for me to get back into the shape I was before, but I'm determined.

I want to get in At least 3 races this year. Races motivate me to push myself a little further. Really at this point I just want to start working out again and sleeping well.

Thanks, Goldlining! It is coooold today for Miami - 50 degrees - but it's sunny! I'm eager to go out and run some more because yesterday felt really easy, but my muscles are sore now. Part of me wants to up my game to a 10k, which I think I could, but I also really want to participate in the Siesta Key Triathlon - sprint distance - which means I have to log some time in the pool. (Info here on Siesta Key: http://www.multirace.com/events/89)

Has anyone else done sprint distance triathlons?

Hi Ladies. It's great to see familiar faces and some new too. Thank you Goldlining to start 2016 thread!

Panthrah, congrats on your PR. Sounds like you had a blast! Thank you for the info about the corral. Last year I stayed at Hotel Menage, took the shuttle, then a long walk to the corral. I booked Disneyland hotel this time. I always wanted to stay there!

I got email from runDisney today about DLHM registration details. Open registration begins on February 2nd, at 9am PST. The registration is $205 now... Anyone gonna to sign up? I'm surprised Tinker Bell hasn't sold out yet. It's a fun race, and l love the course. Since my last 5k in Dec, I haven't been running much, only once a week or so. I'm looking for 5k/10k local races. I need to get back to my routine soon, so that I can start my training for Tinker Bell.

I am IN for the Dumbo Double Dare! (DLHM and 10K)

    The two-run combo was $350.

Disney passholders and Disney Vacation Club members get the head start, opening at noon today, and I was ON the button at 12:00:02!

Congrats goldlining on getting through to registration for DLHM. I remember 10 minutes past the hour and when I went to register everything, but the Half was on hold or sold out. I'll try again next week but still not sure what I want to register for. I was thinking of doing the 5K and 10K.

HockeyCat - I've been looking for local races too but not sure on the organization of some them. I did see that there's a Rose Bowl half, 10 and 5K at the end of February. I wish I felt like driving over to Arizona because I would like to do the Lost Dutchman race.

Unbreakable - 3 races sounds like a great goal! I can't say that I truly "race" but I'd like be a participant in the rest of the Disney races after my surgery next month. My ultimate goal is to do the Camino d Santiago in the summer of 2018. That's been on my bucket list for 17 years and it's time to kick that bucket over. I want to get in good enough shape to do the Dopey Challenge at WDW in 2018 and then do the Spain trip in the summer. Of course, this will necessitate that I find a new job as well, but I look forward to that. ;)

Scrunchcat - Sprint distance triathlons sounds like a great goal. I wish I was in shape to even consider that. :D

I finally was able to get out and do 7.5 miles, mostly walking, on Saturday. I had a 16.5 min/mile pace. I hope to do a 5K distance tomorrow evening and do more run intervals. I also would like to start Yoga this week but I'm fighting quite a bit of anxiety over it at the moment.

Does anyone have any advice on breathing when running? When I was walking this Saturday I did try to do some running intervals and while I'm physically comfortable running for quite a distance, I end up getting out of breath and having to stop. So I realized that maybe Yoga would help with that. I was reading an article that recommended practicing inhaling for 3 seconds and then exhaling for 2 seconds.

    heres more runDisney info:

now you need to show proof of time if you plan on finishing UNDER 2:40 .. use to be 3:15

Dopey 2018 is an anniversary year so lots of people are aiming for that one

the halfs are staying open cause everyone is going for the challenges..more bling

and the "theme" for this yrs DLHM has been posted.. this is a first that they announced it BEFORE reg. its Dynamic Duos

Kids Races- Timon and Pumba, 5k- Liver Lips and Big Al (Country Bears) ,10k Aladdin and Genie , Half Mickey and Pluto, Challenge is Dumbo and Timothy.

No intel if this means the DL half medal or DDD medal will be different.. but it seems that way.

I did not sign up for this.. although I sort of want to. cause I havent done this course in a long time. I do not want to do Avengers again.. maybe because it was just in Nov.. but.. who knows.. I have a disney addiction and a bling addiction.. makes for a very expensive combo. :p

Congrats Goldlining for getting in for DDD :) ooooooo and for SW race.. they kept the interpreter ON SCREEN!! they usually cut them off and pan off.. much better having them on huge beautiful screens :)

I saw that about the themes for the DL Half weekend and I'd like to do at least the 5K. I bought a Duffy the bear running outfit that is so pretty - it was meant for the Princess Half weekend but since I'm deferring, I think wearing a disney bear costume for the Country Bears Jamboree 5K will be awesome. I'm all about the costumes. hehe

I want to do the Avengers as well - the weather in November was great. I'm going to set my sights on the Infinity Gauntlet as my first runDisney challenge.

I like the medals but I think I just like the overall experience. It is a very expensive hobby but gives us a lot to think about - occupies quite a bit of my evening thoughts when I start thinking about the costume I want to wear, should I go running tonight, do I want to buy the race D&B purse, should I go early for the expo, do I really need another pair of New Balance runDisney shoes?, etc. LOL

The runDisney events are literally the ONLY thing I do for myself. I work all the freaking time. I like my work, and have a lot of great experiences within it, but I literally do NOTHING else. runDisney is not a hobby - it's my therapy. Even the injuries and the physio and massage that follows from them are part of the therapy and the "me time". So, I spend a little bit much on airfares, registrations, hotels, and expo swag, and I need another tech shirt like I need a hole in the head, but each medal reminds me of a time I took some time for myself.

This will be my 3rd DDD, I think, and my 7th DLHM and 7th Coast to Coast. I tallied over 30 runDisney Half and 10K. My first Half was their second Princess. (I'd done the Race for the Taste 10K before that.) When my husband was driving me to the airport for that, he said "oh, by the way, the mammography clinic wants you back to redo the mammogram - it's probably nothing" and that was hanging over my head for my whole first-ever Half. I woke up in the middle of the night after to find myself drooling uncontrollably on one side, which the doctor figured was Bell's palsy, likely acute stress from the physical shock of the endurance, and the emotional stress with this "anvil". (It was mild because I was already taking some of the Rx usually given, but it was creepy.) I could barely walk for the wreckage of my IT band (which, I never even knew there WAS an IT band) but it was a revelation: I could do it.

Anyway, runDisney has been my constant companion through the journey. I would "hide" my surgery dates behind runs to look forward to, or schedule runs requiring me to get up and back to activity instead of wallowing.

I've done some other Halfs and there's a 15K I regularly do near home because it makes a good pre-DLHM tune up, but runDisney is unique in how thoroughly they cater to runners on the course. Other runs have inattentive marshals, random people riding bikes across the course, water stations consisting of a garden hose on a fire hydrant, etc. I've been at finish lines where they're out of bananas and have had three bags of stale cashews thrust in my hands. I have medals with ribbons emblazoned with beer logos (when there was no mention of beer in the theme of the run). There is lots of water and powerade - I often just bring an empty bottle to fill at a station in the back half when I get thirstier. There are lots of medical stations and the Clif Shots for those who go for that. The finish line stuff is pretty well provisioned, and possibly even a bit too much to take in after a long run. My only runDisney beef is that about half the time, the volunteer thrusts the medal at you instead of putting it on you, but overall, over 30+ events and counting, runDisney is first class all the way. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone that hasn't done one and is looking for a great experience to look forward to on their recovery journey or, like me, therapy.

cupcaker- you do not need the race D and B, if you want race swag then yes.. early to the expo, you do not need the New Balance ( unless you currently love the characters provided) and on that note... I own 1 D and B Star Wars bag, i have stood in line ONLY for the sw race the first yr, and I bought the Steamboat Willie NB shoes... I am currently waiting/hoping for.... D and B darkside, NB villians OR star wars, and the Darkside expo. to date I have done 16 disney races..3 5k, 4 10k, 7 halfs. and as Goldlining has said... there is no other race like it and i freaking love it. my training consists of my planning and picking my outfit :p I actually really enjoy the challenges.. its nice and you get the extra bling :)

Goldlining- Getting ready for Disney races completely makes me tune out everything else in life. Im focused on what my "treat" will be (churro, rootbeer float) , looking at the outfits, signs, what rides i want to do. I think half my race im thinking of what i want for breakfast :p and pretty much have the volunteers give me the medal ( always recreating the scene from star wars or the oylmpics ) only once he handed it to me and i was too tired to care. i think on the sw 5k she went to hand it to me.. i said nope.. you do it.. and i leaned in :p

husband is teasing me " well you did the 5, 10, and half.. might as well add a full and do the Dopey" ummmmmmmmmmmm not sure I can swing that one

Ah the routine! The run is a ritual, isn't it?

The women's NB Vazee Pace shoes are Little Mermaid (not my favourite - like the men's Dumbo colourway better but my feet are narrow by women's standards so not going to work). The women's 2016 NB 860v6 are a stability shoe and is too heavy for me, plus they are all yellow which is just what you want on a size 11 foot (not). I have the original 860v3 red and yellow ones (pretty beat up now) for walking about on schleppy days. Bought my husband the Steamboat WIllie men's. He does wear stability shoes and he likes them. I'm in the market for new shoes, but these won't be them.

I do always buy a frig magnet, the annual vinylmation, and the race pins (I used to get more but my runDisney lanyard is full so just one per race and challenge). I am not a D&B purse person so thank heavens for that. I also skip the race jacket type stuff. If I got one, what would I do when it was outdated? I can't have 30 race jackets! (Ask me that again after I see the swag in Paris, though.)

Foods both ritual and "nothing new on race day" rule. Pre-race at Princess 2 (my first) the Port Orleans French Quarter had runners' boxes sold the night before, containing a bagel, peanut butter, banana, chocolate milk, nature valley bar, yogurt, and small dasani. I ate it all but the nature valley (ate it after). Good thing I ate it all because it turns out I'm a hungry runner.

To this day, I have to eat at least the bagel, PB, milk and/or yogurt and a little diet coke before I leave the hotel, banana before I get into corral, and sips of water in the last half hour. It's my thing. The availability of the runner's boxes varies, so if I can, I'll shop my own components.

I carb load at WDW at Cooke's of Dublin in Disney Springs on a meat pie and chips. No allergens, lots of potato. No regular carb loads at DL. I've tried pizza, pasta, but still working on that one.

Post race, well, there's Dole Whip of course. mmmmm

I never got the race jackets before but i have ordered the Darkside ( can you tell i like the darkside vs light side?) and i did just get the runDisney teal/blueish jacket because it was the first color that ive liked. i always get the pins and have my vinylmations and the lil medals when they sold them. I dont need new shoes because ive kept my Brooks as strictly race shoes and dont wear them otherwise ( i failed on the rule with previous shoes)

my pre race food is plain pasta..dca over by goofys sky school.. nothing exciting but seems to be very functional for me. race morning.. i have a starbucks double shot ( the little cans) and a small banana. during.. cliff shot blox with caffeine, and cliff gu razz ( getting hard to find that flavor), after- i devour a lumberjack slam or the 2 egg breakfast at la brea. not a clue where to eat at wdw to keep up what im used to. the post race food isnt as important. but where to get pasta in MK .. Ill have to look it up .. unless of course you guys know :P

then park treats are really is anything - churro, cotton candy (i learned NOT to get that at wdw.. its strawberry flavor in a mouse bag) , caramel apple, popcorn.. and keep drinking powerade and keep moving :):)

Good pasta at WDW is in Italy, of course :) Epcot. (Tutti Italia, Via Napoli)

At MK, you might book Tony's Town Square. It's near the entrance, and obviously it has the "Lady and the Tramp" spaghetti and meatballs. It is table service, so needs reservation. There is pasta in buffets like Crystal Palace but the buffets are priced for bigger appetites than mine.

I would not have that because I worry about hidden peppers in the red sauce. The DCA Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta are minefields for me, although a Disney special diets chef told me I should go for a garlic and olive oil pasta at the Trattoria / vineyard place. Naturally, it was booked solid. I will stick with potatoes, waffles, beignets, breads. Another thing that works for me is the pot roast meals - they usually have lots of potato for carbs, a little bland beef for protein, and some steamed veg. I often do that if I am too lazy to bus over to Disney Springs (nee Downtown Disney WDW).

Did you book a Disney resort? A lot of the resorts do have a pasta dinner the night before, similar to what they do at DL and it can be nice to eat and flop without a bus ride in between.

I've only ever passed through there on the bus but I think you can take the Sassagoula boats to Disney Springs and there is lots to eat there (including my favourite meat pie and chips!)

    RunDisney revealed Tinker Bell medals.

    http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2016/01/rund...

I'm a bit disappointed that the medals for 5th anniversary is not much different from last year. Adding color is nice, but I was expecting newly designed medal.
