Lunderwood - that is awesome about the PR and the win! WAY TO GO! I, too, am interested in recovery times. I have surgery week of August 15th and I want to do a 10k beginning of October. Fortunately, I can sign up last minute, but still.
Another race to my agenda - I'll sneak in a 10k between chemo and surgery - August 6th - I'll do the Summer Breeze 10k. It has a cool medal. I figure it will give me something to train for in the mean time.
-
I was looking at some of the races - I would LOVE to see some photos from the Yellowstone Half (how beautiful!) and WOW! A 50k Mustang run! That must of be something!
-
That sounds great! I fixed the Light Side date - Jan 7 is WDW and Star Wars at DLR is the week after. (Wishful thinking?)
I'm in Shanghai and have not run because I have walked a LOT, about 20km a day. I'm so close to Century Park which evidently has a 5km perimeter path, but my knees and feet are sore and I am jet lagged.
But tomorrow is the opening day of Disneyland and I will be there (in the evening)
-
Just popping in - haven't been on the running thread since last year - but have to share that I placed 3rd in my age group in a 5K this weekend!! I got an award medal and everything! It pays to turn 60 - in my 50's I was a steady middle-of-the-packer, but now that I'm in a whole new age group, I've moved up to the winner's circle!!
OK, it may never happen again, but I'm loving that it happened at all - I've never won an athletic award of any kind in my entire life, so this felt really special.
-
NatsFan! That's awesome! Congrats!!
-
Yay NatsFan! There is an upside to the march of time! You go!
-
Got 3.5 miles in yesterday! Need to get back in shape for the 10k in August.

Hey Luvlulu, how did that run go last week?
It's the heat of the summer so it seems there are not so many events on the schedule at the top. I got food poisoning as I left Shanghai (didn't hit me until I got back here) and the past couple of weeks have been resting and walking (walked my last Disney Shorts 5K). I'm not at home, so I've been waiting for it to go away. Finally gave up and went to a walk-in clinic, which sent me to the hospital (needed IV by that point). Got antibiotics, which I hope are working. I do feel much improved. A brisk walk is nice but I want to try running and see how my stupid piriformis is.
How are you all doing?
-
Hi, goldlining, thanks for asking! I haven't posted in a long while but I have been reading all your posts. Some great work we're doing out there!
My race went pretty good. We did the 5K in April, that was a piece of cake, great weather, lots of fun. The 10K was last week and that was fun. My son runs races with me - well, not WITH me, but we're in the same race. He started a new job and hasn't been running as much and put on weight from coffee & donuts in the mornings, subs at lunch and beers after work with the guys, so he's not as swift as he was!!! And I have another young friend, Jen, who lifts amazing weights at the gym and I turned her into a runner, and now she's going crazy winning age groups, etc. The 10K last week was hot, there were elites there "fine tuning" for the Olympics. In fact, Shalane Flanagan won. The race had a turn around point so we could see the leaders as they were coming back and as the first men came into view our side started going crazy. Then when the WOMEN came it was even better. We were all shouting for Shalane "Go Shalane!! USA USA!!" Such fun. And the final race of the series, the half-marathon will be coming up in October.
We also did a half marathon Memorial Day weekend. I actually did better than I expected, 2:14. I was exhausted that week. My 96 year old mother passed away and her funeral had been a couple of days before. At 96 she had a good run. She never got sick, she was just getting tired and her heart finally gave out. I'm sad, I miss her, but it's the circle of life. The week was hot, we had the funeral, then were on a deadline to clean out her apartment. The half-marathon day was cloudy and cool, perfect, so I think that's why I had a good run. The next day we finished cleaning out Mom's apartment, went to lunch with my sister and 2 of my sons, had a couple of oyster shooters, and I passed out. EMTs came, brought me to the hospital. One of the EMTs was a triathlete so I told him I had run the half the day before and he asked what my normal resting HR is so I told him, around 57 or so, and he said "well, it's down in the 40's now which is too low even for a runner so we're taking you to the hospital."
Of course, once they get you there they run a battery of tests, and all came back normal. I think it was a combination of dehydration and stress and exhaustion from the week, and it all hit me at once.
Enough about ME, I have to go catch up on everyone else's posts!
Stay strong, Ladies!!!

Goldlining - I am sorry to hear about your food poisoning. That can be terrible. Hope you recover quickly!
Luvlulu - Thank you for the update. Your mother sounded like a remarkable person what a blessing to live such a long, healthy life. Great job on the half marathon finish. Have you recovered fully from all of the aftereffects? Dehydration and exhaustion can take some time to get over.
My last pre-surgery run was the Mustang Run on June 11th. My surgeon's were concerned about possible dehydration and exhaustion issues so close to surgery so I ran the half marathon rather than the full or ultra. It got very warm (upper 80's) so I walked a bit during the full sun sections. I finished 2nd in my AG and helped with an aid station the rest of the day. I finished my day as trail sweep walking the last three miles in with the last few marathon runners. Trail running is such a relaxed sport.
Surgery went relatively well other than a few nausea issues due to anesthesia. My resting heart rate is in the upper 40's so that always caused some questions when they monitored my vitals. I started running (slowly) on my treadmill 2weeks post surgery. I am still restricted to inside activities due to our extreme heat (over 100 with heat index) I have done a little bit of easy hiking outside but hope that the PS will relax the restrictions at my 3wk post surgery check on Thursday. My energy levels are good in the morning but I am still resting each afternoon. I will probably need to ease back into training for any specific events.
Take care all - Keep Running!!!!

Anything new out there? Bimsickle has a run down under this weekend.
My S-I joint / pirifomis has kept me walking (as has Pokémon GO!) but the other day I slipped on wet pavement and landed on the other knee and it might have adjusted it back. I am waiting to see...
What's up?

Hi everyone! It's been a while.... I've been busy with hockey in this summer, haven't had much time for running. I got Fitbit Alta to encourage myself to walk instead of taking elevator. I have a desk job so hitting 10,000 steps is hard! I signed up for a few races in fall/winter to get back to running. I'll be running two 5k with my goddaughter!
- September 17: LA Kings 5k
- October 30: Rock 'n' Roll LA
- December 10: Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run (5k)

Hi All! It's so good to hear that you are active even if not running in the heat of the summer and making plans for future runs. I am 5 weeks post UMX and returned to work part time this week. I have been running (slowly) on my treadmill since week 2 post op and will get clearance to resume normal running at 6 weeks. It's been a bit uncomfortable at time to run with the tissue expanders especially the day after a fill. I hope to be able to resume more focused training very soon. I haven't registered for any fall or winter runs yet.
I am not sure where I will be in the reconstruction process. I did get good (I think) news that my oncodx score is 17 so no chemo or radiation is needed. My MO has recommended that I continue on Arimidex for 5yrs and monthly Faslodex injections for 18months. I only had minimal SE during the 6 month prior to surgery so hope they will also be minimal in future. I am so ready to make plans for future runs and return to normal!
Keep running ladies!!!! I love to hear about your adventures and the cool places you run!

Slowly gaining momentum training for Savannah Rock n Roll marathon. IT IS SO HOT!!!
I run at night 8-9pm ish and it's still 89f last night. It's tough to build distance up. It's ten degrees cooler in mornings but I'm always working😒
I called a very disciplined friend, she's going out with me this Sunday to crank 9miles. Hopefully that motivates me
-
runDisney just announced their 5K medals are going to be metal.
That may be a factor for some who prefer the 5K distance, wanted to to a Disney run, but weren't jazzed by the silicone medals.
It's hot here too. I have been babying my sore SI joint but I have to get some training in. I don't think walking will be enough to train, although I am along a lot. I was not sure I wanted to go out after dark but that may be my only option because I don't seem to be able to do it in the morning and it's similar temperatures here. Not complaining! I am enjoying every last day in Florida before I return to Canada and we have plenty of cold days when I will wish I was here in this!
-
gosh everyone has been going great since I last checked in here...
So my last AC got canned as my cancers had all grown by 30%
So I went straight on to Taxol and Herceptin, man they are way better in many many ways than AC, I hate that stuff!!
Anyway, last Sunday was my big (for me any way) race doing a 10km after my 4th taxol and 2nd herceptin…
So I was hoping to finish in 80 minutes, but thought it would be more like 90 as fatigue has been slowly creeping in… my gorgeous friend ran with me and paced me and we finished in 68 minutes!!
I have been running once or twice a week at a dispicable pace, but I know that my speed will pick up once I finish chemo. Doing something is better than nothing right? Although I would love to just sleep the next 7 weeks away
-
Sorry I have been MIA. I had to work San Diego Comic Con and then went straight to Rollercon ( roller derby convention) pretty sure I didnt sit down for 2 weeks unless we were in the car. today is put the house back in order and squish the cats until they are sick of it
-
Oh Bimsickle that 10K time is great! Sorry to read about your latest medical update, but glad to see your positive outlook!
When I do the Dumbo Double Dare in a few short weeks, I can only hope to do that time because of lack of training.
I went out the other day for 5K after such a long break, and the SI joint/sciatic area was sore, but I kept going, and came back and sweated all the way through and after my shower, and by mid-afternoon was totally nauseated and couldn't eat anything (it was, like, 35C out there with Florida humidity), and went to bed early. The next day I noticed while my legs were stiff (from deconditioning), I didn't feel the sciatica. It's not gone, but there is a lot to be said for other discomfort to mask it!
-
A running topic, yay! I started running just two years ago when I turned 50 and ran my first (and last) marathon this year. I've never been healthier in my life and then I go and get cancer!
I have one more race coming up this year in September, a 14K (odd amount, I know but it's named after a local beer). I'll most likely be undergoing radiation therapy at that time and I'm worried that will impact my running. All the medical appointments and procedures have already put a wrench in my training.
Races for 2016 (all local to Cincinnati):
- March 5 - Bockfest 5K
- April 29 - Little Kings One Mile
- April 30 - Flying Fur (2 mile race with my little running buddy: Ollie, my dog)
- May 1 - Flying Pig Marathon
- September 17 - Hudepohl 14K
-
thanks Goldlining, I am sure you will do just fine in your race. The atmosphere is a total lift for a lack of better training
bagsharon it looks like you have been keeping totally busy with your races this year. I have no pointers as to radiation and running as I am not at that point in my treatment yet...
The races you do sound like great fun just from the names
-
figures, my first post on these boards would be on a running thread!
I've been running for about 8 years, and it's a big part of my life. So much so that throughout all of my pre-op appts and classes, the one thing that always brought me to tears was the idea that I would have to take time off of running for recovery from surgery. I've run 3 marathons, many half marathons, and a bunch of other distances and events.
I'm only 9 days out from my double mastectomy and oophorectomy, and a very short, slow walk today almost wiped me out! A far cry from a marathon!!
Looking forward to a day when I can head out for a run. I know it will happen. Trying to be patient.

I am happy that I got out for a couple slowish 5k loops this week. It's 46 consecutive days over 90F so kind of hot, but I felt okay this morning - the leg hurt, but this time, did not feel like I was making it worse, just sore. I go home in a week and can try to get some physio and massage in before Disneyland. It's just disappointing because last year I had a pretty good Disneyland and then did not run much between Labour Day and New Years because of extended bronchitis, and my WDW Half time suffered, and I was going to really turn the corner this year. My 5K pace today was back to 7:30+/km. I'd improved it to sub-7:00/km before whatever this is. At least I hatched some 5K Pokémon eggs while I was out
Welcome Bagsharon and mom2allboys. Hope to read lots of outings from you.
I don't know about radiation effect on running but had the pleasure of resetting for surgery three times (mx, DIEP, and revision of DIEP). Fun. My takeaway was to walk as early and as often as I could and call it "running" and enjoy being able to do that. Don't worry about pace until your body says it is okay.

I ran my first post surgery 5k last weekend. It was a small run in conjunction with a triathlon. TWU Pioneer Power 5k in Denton, TX. Due to extreme heat and worries about infection I have only been running on my treadmill post op. It definitely wasn't a PR run but I am just so glad to be running at all! Since I am not training in the heat my breathing was off and the tissue expander didn't help either. My exchange surgery is set for Sept 29 - hopefully I can try a few more 5-10ks before that time. I will be very glad to get through the reconstruction process but don't look forward to another surgery and recovery period! So far the return to the hormone therapy and injections hasn't caused to many side effects. Hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to cooler fall running events!
-
Hello! I am a Stage IV runner. Not new to running or mets (less than a year but doing well). New to here. Any other mets ladies here?
-
Welcome clsmit!
Anyone in the same situation?
Hey Lunderwood, nice medal for a 5K! (Bet the finish line felt good
)
-
Thanks Goldlining! - You are right I was sooo glad to finish! I was really inspired watching the sprint triathletes too! I am considering training for a sprint tri once I am recovered from the exchange surgery. I cycle a little bit but would need to work on the swimming. It would definitely be a new adventure for me. I am glad you are able to run again - even slowly is good! Hope you will continue to heal and improve.
-
Woo hoo clsmit and welcome to Breastcancer.org. Great to hear you are running, and doing well!! Keep us posted, as you are an inspiration! Thanks for joining us!
-
I slipped and fell down the runDisney site again:
Castaway Cay 5k April 18th 2017
Darkside challenge: 10k April 22 2017
half April 23 2017

I saw Get Travel still has some Disneyland Half registrations left for next weekend!!! Shock!
I've been so worried because I've had this awful pain in my right hip/glute/thigh/SI joint for months. I've had different physio on it, adjusting the joint, stretching, strengthening, dry needling, etc. but today I finally got it massaged. That was the best thing so far. She's booked solid so I have my fingers crossed for a cancellation so I can get one more massage before I fly. Worst case, I am confident I can cover the distance, just not sure what pace. I shall carb load with enthusiasm, however
-
then we shall sloooowly stroll the park eating junk food while wearing mouse ears
:)
