I have been sneaking in short walks in between the continuing deluge of rain here in Oregon, it's something, but not much. It's supposed to be nice later in the week and I am planning at least one trip to the beach to watch Jack run and see what I can manage with the refreshing sea air to back me up.

12/25: 1.1 miles (steps, stretches, rotator cuff exercises, 200 bicep curls)
12/26: 1.76 miles (steps, stretches, rotator cuff exercises, 400 bicep curls, 100 dead bugs, 25 modified military presses)
12/27: 3.0 miles (steps, stretches, rotator cuff exercises, 300 bicep curls, 20 military press #3 + 20, 50 dead bugs, 10 reclined triceps extension)
12/28: 7.25 miles (steps, Zumba stretches x2, rotator cuff exercises, 50 dead bugs)

Is it even possible to lose 5 lbs of cookies, cranberry bread, potica, and stuffing by next Mondays when I have a check with my MO? Sigh. Magical thinking didn't work on cancer, it won't work on cookies. Damn.

I am famous for bringing sunny skies wherever I go...there was a group who used to invite me to monthly meetings in Seattle, until they figured out there was no point, as I'd come for the one sunny day of the month, and they'd all be in the meeting looking out at the sunshine....
ok, major jinx there. But seriously, my recollections of Portland in July are of great weather. Of course, it *is* the same week as the beer festival....

I am not sure if I told you guys but I made my 150 classes. I consider it one of the best accomplishments of my life. The old me worked out 3 times a week tops. The SE of the working out is that my shoulder is hurting because of my scoliosis. I am in PT for it though.

June is nice at the Lake - the weather has been wanky - warm for winter so it's hard to say. Definitely warm enough for hanging out on the dock, but prob not too warm for hikes.

Allison, I think you may have said on our March forum you hit the magic number, but awesome job! I think goals keep us focused. Heading out shortly to ride and hit my 3,000 mile mark. Got derailed yesterday by grandkids and daughter, but I spent four hours at a play center crawling around and sliding and tight rope walking, etc., so I have a few aches in weird places today. But it sure was fun. And everything counts!
Ride today and then walking around at Legoland all day tomorrow to do a kids New Year's Eve. They drop a Lego brick and have dancing, and fireworks. So that should be awesome fun and make for tired feet

Hi all, I've decided to join you - better late than never, right? I am done with every possible excuse, now is time to get back into an exercise routine. I need to lose 50#, but I'm not going to focus on weight, but just trying to exercise every day and try to make better choices with food.
I've done this many times before, and I think that's part of why I have been dragging my feet and finding every excuse to start "tomorrow". It's a lot of work, and even though I feel, overall, better when I do exercise, I also find it challenging to stick with it. I know my strengths and weaknesses - and so I know what works and doesn't work for me. One of the things that works is that I have to have a routine - I can't just think I'll find time in my day, because I never will.
So, in order to be successful, I have to get up at 5 AM and work out before the rest of my day starts. I have made this as easy as possible on myself - I'd sleep in my exercise clothes, roll out of bed, and hit my home exercise equipment for 45 - 50 minutes of cardio. I mostly have done the treadmill, but I bought a used Treadclimber this summer because I thought that I was burnt out on the treadmill (I've used it twice.) After cardio, I would usually do ab work and some weights. By then it was time to hit the shower in order to get my daughter to school on time and to work.
Anyway, my alarm goes off at 5 every morning, but I just hit the snooze or turn it off. Looking forward to any suggestions you have for motivating me to get my feet on the floor. I keep saying to myself "it's the one thing that they *know* decreases the risk of recurrence" I mean, that should be enough, but sleep always wins . . .

Welcome, Lynne! Research shows that awareness and accountability make a big difference in behavior change, so you might want to check in here every day. If 5 isn't working, can you try something else? Even a 15-minute walk would be additional exercise!

Lynne, move your alarm to the other side of the room. It's harder to hit snooze if you are already on your feet.

Lynne, I have found that if I can't do what I feel is the optimal exercise, I cram something else in, even if it is a walk on my lunch hour, or just walking around the office building or anything. All movement is good. And as a person who exercises quite a bit and burns tons of calories and has lost 50 pounds, now 40 after chemo took care of that, the calories burned in exercise don't matter as much as the food I eat. So I guess what I'm saying is it all counts, even a 15 minute brisk walk. Just get in dibs and dabs where you can, in addition to your 5 am routine, or instead of it. 5:00 am is harsh! I view the exercise as more of a lifestyle and health issue, not as a weight loss mechanism. What I put in my mouth matters more for weight loss.
On trick I've learned (which I will be going back to) is eat half my food, wait 15 minutes, and see if I really want the rest. When I am really hungry, I have found I eat more than I really need, kind of like quenching the hunger doesn't catch up as fast as I eat.
