Anastrozo (arimidex) and urethra inflammation
I've been on anastrozo for about 2 months now and doing well until about 2 weeks ago. Started to feel burning down there, but the normal feeling of a UTI never materializes. It's maddening. My plastic surgeon (I'm having reconstruction) prescribed some Bactrim when I told him about it, but it hasn't gotten any better, so I'm going to the onco next week.
In the mean time, has anyone experienced this and how did you resolve it? I saw a couple of other threads and wrote down some suggestions (estring, vagifem, oxybutynin.) I don't even know if this is a complication due to the AI, but I do not want to stop taking it. What can I expect? Very frustrated.

Hi Chris,
Although i was on a different Al I had the same symptoms. It lasted for close to a year and then went away on its own. It was very frustrating and irritating but did finally resolve. Good luck to you.

Sometimes taking Azo Standard or Cystex helps the burning. It is probably a symptom of atrophy. Are you using any vaginal moisturizers? I also find I am very sensitive to anything acidic and had to give up tea, citrus, spicy foods, cranberry and a few other things. I also switched to low acid coffee. I still have days that I burn but they are less frequent.

I am taking some Uristat for right now until I see the onco this coming week. I wondered about using a moisturizer too - does it help? I have been drinking a lot of cranberry juice lately because I thought it was just a UTI, but it's been going on too long and I've been on antibiotics. It's just maddening. Good advise about the acidic foods. I read that some women are allowed to put a tiny dab of some sort of estrogen cream down there because it is only absorbed locally in the area (with doctor's approval.) Good to know that others have been through this and have gotten through. If they only made a numbing cream, that would be good. I know I have been prone to UTIs in the past and a bit of irritation (with no bacteria) and it has gone away, but because I'm on this medication, I wondered if this is what's causing it. I think also I'm kind of upset that I have to go back to the doctor yet again - my next appt. is at the end of January and that was just fine with me. Thanks for answering.
