Italychick - So the doc's are cool with the magnesium supplement? How much do you recommend? Does it need to be tested for levels or does the extra just get excreted.
Also, AI gals, are you finding they cause hot flashes as bad as tamoxifin? I'll start on an AI (Anestrazole?) in a couple of weeks.
-
SueH58, docs are fine with magnesium supplementation. What you don't use gets peed out. If you take too much, worse that will happen is about an hour or two of diarrhea, then just take a lesser amount or change the form, like glycinate, citrate, threonate. I played around with forms until I found the best one for me. But occasionally I quit for a day or two if my poop gets too loose.
-
Ja, magnesium is inherently self-limiting.
-
Sue...can't remember if anyone else on this thread is on an AI but me...seems those that are on something, are on Tamoxifen. Is there anyone else on an AI? I can't speak to the Tamoxifen, but the anastrazole (Arimidex) hot flashes where just like the ones from chemopause for me, not too bad. I used to wake 2-3 times a night briefly with night sweats, but after almost 3 months the hot flashes/night sweats are leveling off. I have mild bone/joint pain, insomnia, and fatigue, but I'm on Lupron too so not sure what drug is causing which side effects.

my brother is visiting! Baby bookend. So happy. Made him one of his favorites.
Daily food porn: Organic Lemon Bars! Yum! Smells good!

Yum!

One more clarification on magnesium in my personal experience. The reason I say monitor what happens with you personally is, for example, if I have a day with a long bike ride in 90 degree heat, I deplete more of my minerals like magnesium, so I take more, if I have a day I am a couch potato doing a movie marathon, I take less. That's why I think it is so hard to come up with an exact dose, if that makes sense. If I do the 90 degree long bike ride and I don't take enough, my legs let me know. If I take the right amount, my legs are "quiet."
Katy, you're a brat for posting that. I love, love, love lemon bars! Drooling now.
-
Katy...oh yum! That looks sooooo good!

Ok remind me what are the benefits of magnesium?
Sharon I love the Vanna gogo for your camper and I just love the camper! I'd love to have one too maybe when son goes to college. Zoey is a cute name means life or Joy, or Lucy I always think of Lucille Ball and her crazy fun adventures.
I went to a Breast cancer wellness day today offered by Unite for Her. A breast cancer survivor started the org to empower and restore women after a diagnosis. The day started with a continental breakfast with welcome and then yoga, massage, reiki, lunch, nutritionist talk and acupuncture doctor talk. A truly enjoyable day plus each attendee receives 12 complimentary sessions for service of choice to be used within a year and a nutritionist will call me and do a 1/2 hr phone consult and a 45 min beauty is wellness consult(she teaches about detoxing your beauty products- Katy they r not fans of the look good ACS program) and I get an 8 week CSA vegetable share. Also received this cookbook and some other helpful tips.

I'm loving Vanna!
Sue and PB, I got my Lupron shot on 10/16 and just started my AI last night. No side effects yet, but it's probably too soon. I'll let you know when more condiments start rolling in.
Katy, those lemon bars look divine. I'm salivating!!!!!!!!
-
Lee...I had a few mild headaches about a week after I started my Lupron/Arimidex, but they went away after about a week or two. I haven't had any really noticeable side effects with the Lupron, until my 4th injection just last Friday. This weekend I've had such overwhelming fatigue, not sure what to make of it except it came on after the Lupron injection. I'll be having my oophorectomy in just about 2 weeks, hoping I won't have any new side effects with that.
Which AI are you on? Fingers crossed you will have no side effects. I didn't notice anything until about the 2nd-3rd month.

Maryellen, magnesium helps with pooping, making sure calcium doesn't end up where it isn't supposed to be, making sure calcium goes where it is supposed to, keeps heart steady, seems to help with hot flashes, helps me with leg cramps, helps regulate blood sugar, has natural relaxant properties, like if I mistakenly have caffeinated coffee too late in the day magnesium a helps me get to sleep, essential for bone health, helps with blood pressure, helps reduce inflammation.
-
I love vanna go go! Thanks Theresa. Hmm she doesn't feel like a lucky or zoey. Plus I don't want her to be a comedian,I want a dependable van! I have however taken out roadside assistance just in case.
Nice food porn katy. I've never tasted lemon bars. Hmm, I might look at the recipe, although I am trying to avoid sugar.
Thanks maryellen. I think i might download some of those apps.
-
Shron/ you have lemons don't you? Yeah I'd like to cut out sugar but I think I'd have to shoot myself.
T- maybe the magnesium will make the sugar ho where it needs to go too, haha
-
sugar ho. Freudian slip.
-
Lol, Katy.

Hi, all.
I'm home from the hospital since the weekend, but have been spending most of my time sleeping. Im cutting way back on painkillers, and should get my drain out on Thursday, if all goes well. Im still fairly uncomfortable, and have been very swollen, all over, since surgery. Even my face and feet are puffy. I haven't been able to wear my (one) pair of shoes that still fit since the 20th, and I'm back to "never trust a fart", which I thought was behind me.
On the good news side, my Breast surgeon said that there was no indication of any disease in my left breast - this mx appears (at least until path results come back) to have been wholly prophylactic. Woohoo!
Here's hoping that the fatigue and tummy upset calm down over the next few days. When I am awake, I'm just nauseated enough that reading is tough.
Best wishes to all for a good week.
-
Avmom- glad you are home and in your own bed. I hope and feel certain your swelling and discomfort will start to abate soon. And you should have the bracelet any day now! There might be some special mojo that will help you feel better.
So glad the mx was prophy! Fingers crossed on the final path and that you get the drain out later this week!
Thanks for checking in. We are all thinking of you.
-
Rest up avmom. Glad all went well.
Maryellen, that program sounds fabulous!
-
Avmom...so glad to hear all seems to be going well. I'll be having my prophy mx in about two weeks and starting to get nervous. Makes me feel better knowing you got through ok. Hope all continues to go well.

So happy to hear from you avmom and that it was all clear. Take it very easy, well be sending helping vibes your way.
Katy, my lemon tree died! Oh well. There are tons of lemons around atm. I'm dehydrating some that were going free at work. 😊
I'm at the neurologist today. I don't think I need to be here, but if I don't finalise it and something changes I'll regret it. I did have 2 migraines over the weekend, but I'm pretty sure it's related to some stress I'm having and not from the chemo.
-
Sharon- two migraines in one weekend. I'm so sorry. And you were out doing van Gogo! Stress follows us around. Sorry about the lemon tree too. Glad at least they are plentiful. ;-(
-
Gglad to hear your home Avmom and all things are looking good. You'll love when the bracelet arrives. Best wishes for a quick recovery.
Thanks Theresa on the magnesium maybe I'll add some to help with hot flashes.
Katy the lemons bars looked delicious, I've never made but I love a good tart one. Ever make key lime bars?
I'm feeling fatigued, I've crashed 3x today only for short naps but I can not keep my eyes open. I also have a very red boob with peeling underneath, it stings like a bitch and every few hours I'll feel an intense pain like someone stabbing my boob, 2 weeks to go. I also have random itchiness. It started 3 weeks ago with one spot in my upper right arm, kept me awake all night. No bumps or rash, not dry skin and it's making me crazy. I'll be driving and all of a sudden my thigh itches then it'll be my shoulder, it's so random and feels like it's from the inside. Any thoughts or suggestions? I hate to go to my doctor who'll likely think I'm nuts and tell me to use some lotion.

Maryellen- HUGS! 💗💗💗

Hi Everyone!
Thought I would check in. I had a wonderful weekend away from home and had several moments where I forgot I had cancer. Then back to reality: PT, fills and then my rads sim this week. I have been so anxious and the smallest things seem to trigger it but mostly feeling overwhelmed. My work seems so much harder to me now that I am back full time. Had to take a Xanax at work yesterday while having my hubby on the phone talking me through it. I have found my mastectomy support group very helpful. I still find the individual counseling helpful. Since I am a counselor myself I of course encourage others to consider it but, just like any profession, there are some no so good counselor too.
-
Sorry for the double post but my typing slowed since I back spaced. Anyway...I am a school counselor now but I used to be in private practice and I always told my clients that counseling is like a relationship in that you don't always "click" but I also know shopping around for help is annoying. I am happy to have found my counselor through my local cancer resource center. She knows a lot about cancer and treatment just from talking to her clients. Anyway, IMHO, counseling isn't lame but also isn't for everyone.
Amber, so glad your scans were clear! That is wonderful news!

OMG, up early watching the news and a story about how the World Health Organization now says meat and processed meat cause cancer. Especially red meat apparently. And bacon.
-
And bacon was enjoying such a spike in popularity! Rumor has it they've known this for several years and the ag industry and cattle lobby have kept it from making the news. I dont know if thats true but the economic impact could be huge. I also saw a story yesterday about human dna being found in meatless hot dogs. the timing of the story is maybe not coincidental?
Carrie, I had a rough time going back to work after my bmx. I had the crushing anxiety and had to leave early a few days. I felt superfluous to my team, l had trouble focusing, and on the verge of tears. It took several weeks to get back to normal. People eventually started treating me like they did before I left, and I slowly started feeling useful again. It's not completely like it was before, but nothing is. The new way of going through life, at least until this year is further behind us, includes a degree of anxiety and discomfort.
-
I have read that anxiety can be a side effect of anesthesia for an extended period of time after surgery! Just what we need, on top of everything else.
My husband's urologist told him a couple of months ago to not eat red meat more than every 2 weeks because your risk of colon cancer skyrockets with more than that. We don't eat much meat at home but I've definitely been thinking twice when I look at menus since then.
