Exercise and well being during chemo and radiation

When I'm allowed to have alcohol, I often cook with a little amantillado or red wine. My strategy is like that of an addicted anesthesiologist--one for you, a little for me....
Adding a little wine reduces the need for salt IMHO.
I might be the only one in this group with gia vi nấu cảnh chưa (Vietnamese sour shrimp paste for making Tom Yum) in the fridge at the moment as well!
-
yes the sherry is great for reducing down the crispy bits on the sides of the pan. I think
Julia used to have a bit about that. But you definitely got me on the paste.
-
ksusan, Tom yum is my favorite soup ever. Yummmmmmmm!
1 hr stairmaster, .5 hrs circuit weights including free weights, mld. Not bad for being up with food poisoning all night!
-
Gardening. And sweating. Never understood the appeal of 'hot yoga', though I know many do.
-
Food poisoning?
Bikram yoga doesn't appeal to me, either!
-
Something about the heat limbering you up so you can get a better stretch. )shrug(
-
I don't even know what amontillad is!
Exercise for me was cleanimg out a closet. Two hours later, I needed a two hour rest. 7 weeks PFT, I just wear out so fast. Am I abnormal? Then, made a trip to Whole Foods. Now, ready for jammies.
Ksusan, How did the Ducks do? My sister and husband are in Corvallis. HE is happy football has started. My sister has learned to let him be football crazy from now until January. They have been married 42 years.
-
Ducks are up 37-21 at the end of the 1st half. Eastern Washington is doing a good job.
Beavers beat the Wildcats 26-7 yesterday.
At 7 weeks PFC I was getting radiation, so I couldn't say what's a normal energy level
Amontillado is a semi-dry sherry. It features in the Edgar Allan Poe story, "The Cask of Amontillado" ("For the love of God, Montresor!").
-
YOU are quite the cook! I remember visiting my sister a couple years ago when the Ducks were playing the Beavers. I flew into Portland. Getting from Portland to Corvallis took as long as it did to fly from Florida to Oregon! Next time, will make sure it is not a game day
-
The Civil War game always ties up I-5.
-
For sure!
-
it also featured in Babette's Feast- a movie everyone who loves food should see. It's about way more than food though. Sadly out of print. In my top 10 faves.
-
The Cask of Amantilado is one of the creepiest stories I've ever read.
-
9/5:
- 1.0 hr T (2.6 MPH avg) + stretches
- 25 crunches
- Fitbit steps
- .5 hr T (2.6 MPH)
= 5.25 miles
-
Huskies games, ditto for Seattle. Stay off I5!
I'd forgotten that about Amontillado being mentioned in Babette's Feast.
Today, as much gardening as the weather permits. It's going to be another 'bikram yoga' day, or as close as Michigan ever gets.

Hey all,
I made it back from the woods, and logged lots of exercise trying to stay warm and dry. We were at the base of Mount Hood and there was at least a 20 degree difference between our campsite and Portland which was unexpected since there wasn't much difference in elevation.
Seems like everyone has really upped their exercise game lately- all these weights and crunches but I'm glad to see the culinary undertones persist. Add me to the list of those with amontillado in the kitchen. I enjoyed some good tawny port on the camping trip, and a couple of hot toddys mostly as a survival tactic. Port around a campfire after 9 months of abstinence is akin to heaven. It feels like we've turned the corner to Fall here in the PNW, with our beloved rain persisting.
Here is a little lymphedema dance for everyone. It's a bit more enthusiastic than the LE exercises ive been doing so I might switch things up with this, add a little "Stanky leg" move in there and call it good.

I never understood the appeal of hot yoga, either, but I find myself doing it. I started doing yoga at CorePower (it's a national chain but is not yet in all states) last November. I had done a bit of yoga years before, but for some reason the CorePower style really worked for me, and I stuck with it. The style is vinyasa "flow," and it's a little more vigorous than some other styles. I was able to keep doing it throughout chemo and credit it with keeping my SE's relatively mild. (Still sucky, though, of course.) The basic level CorePower class is not heated, but the other classes are. They're not quite as hot as Bikram, but one of them is pretty close. I don't really like the heat but enjoy the classes enough to put up with it. I'm willing to accept that it might allow for deeper stretching, etc., plus I figure that it probably helped me sweat out a lot of chemo toxins.
Just call me that old, bald lady in the Hot Power Fusion class . . .
-
Welcome Bluedog! Glad, well not really, not for the reason that is, that you joined us here. Great that you continued your power yoga during chemo. There is powerful evidence that it minimizes SEs. Good for you.
Sloth- got my first morning laugh/snort/coffee through the nose moment from your stanky leg and good to go comment. You are HILARIOUS. So glad you're on the amontillado team. HAR.
-
Thanks, Katy. I know you've been doing yoga, too. I'm glad you've found a class you like.

I accidently posted in the wrong thread. That shows how out-of-it I've been! Reposting....
I usually walk 4 miles a day (for years!), but I can't seem to get motivated this past week. Maybe l'll wear my FitBit for a while for external motivation. Even my eating habits have been questionable. I'm normally a meatless meals healthy eater, and I've found myself eating meals out and having bread and junk food this week. So that is now playing into my laxiness. I'm nervous about my next chemo, and maybe I'm over eating because of the steroids in the chemo or chemo induced menopause. Anyone have these issues? Help. Just writing this gets me a little motivated to go out and walk now. Ugh. Losing my hair, too. I'm having the full-on pity party.
-
Maybe find a treat that you feel good about for your steroid days? I was certainly hungrier! The Fitbit is a good motivator.
-
Sloan- you are ok. I didn't worry too much about what I ate, how much I ate. Some weeks I felt like eating more than others. Don't beat yourself up. The steroids FOR SURE contribute and that is out if your control mostly. The goal with chemo is just survive. The exercise will make you feel better, but perhaps you could set smaller goals that wouldn't seem like another mountain to climb. Try a couple of short walks instead of a big if long session. I will be thinking of you. Two more to go? How much longer? Celebrate finishing each milestone
-
Hi Sloan,
I ate more in general and less healthy overall while I was on chemo (C/T same as you)
At first I told myself I was going to eat whatever tasted good because I might end up with nausea or food might start to taste bad. I never developed much nausea and there was always something that tasted okay but I just kept overeating. I also kept walking and when all was said and done I'd only gained three pounds which came off easily once I started feeling more normal. I tried to make healthy choices such as organic veggies and meats but I didn't deny myself the milkshake either! I am a vegetarian and I also started eating meat while I was on chemo. It was like a switch was flipped and that's what I wanted. Now I'm vegetarian again and I no longer have those protein cravings that I was having during chemotherapy.
Having finished chemo I would say to those going through it, eat what sounds good, give yourself a break about your food choices-you are in the trenches and it's not the time to lay a guilt trip on yourself, just eat it if you want it and know that things will normalize again after treatments. Our March chemo group talked about food as much as side effects so I think the appetite changes are normal.
That week the hair starts falling out is a rough one, I remember it well. I was just looking at pics on my phone this morning of the day in March when I got my buzz cut. Now my hair has grown to the length that strangers are complimenting me on my "cute short cut."
Exercise as much as you can every day! This thread and everyone here can help motivate you, support you and celebrate your progress.

walked about two miles yesterday am and then last night went to an engagement party for my nephew where there was dancing. Lots of dancing. Including several line dances I couldn't get out of participating in....so I got a lot of steps in yesterday. It felt good.
but then, there was an open bar. Since i figured it would be my last alcohol for a while (I start chemo Wednesday) I indulged in two very good martinis. Since I've barely drunk anything alcoholic since my dx, that might have been a bit much. I had breakfast with my sisters who were all at the party, and have spent most of the rest of the day drinking lots of water and resting. All in all, a good weekend for exercise of various types :-)
-
Octo- Sounds just like what the doctor ordered!
And I'm glad they were very good Martinis. I don't drink much either any more, but when I do, I make sure it is of the HIGHEST quality, haha.
Glad you put your dancing shoes on, and good times with the sister units.

Jackiebirdie, slothabouttown, and ksusan-- Thanks for the tips. I DID get my 10,000 steps in this AM, so I'm getting through my pity party. My better outlook after exercising reinforces how much I NEED TO EXERCISE FOR SO MANY REASONS! I'll get through it and am looking forward to having a "cute short cut." Someone on one of the other threads said how our reward for losing hair during chemo is the soft duck fuzz we get when it first starts to grow back. Yeah, I'll think those thoughts. Thank you.
-
I am way behind on posts...will catch up eventually!!!
I alternated running and walking 9 exhausting miles. I was then ready to crash for the day... Then hubby decided we needed to paint siding, so I painted all day in the heat. I head to work in an hour. Ugh! I already have over 20,000 steps for the day. No wonder my feet hurt
-
Kbee- wore me out just reading about your day! You GO girl!
-
Back from a week of assorted camping and other vacation activity in NY State, Vermont, and NJ. Two longish hikes, some canoeing, but mostly several days in a row in which I was standing more than sitting, moving around more than standing....all good!
Though yesterday's hour and a half in Kohl's with teen DS trying to find pants that would do for school and fit a 29 waist/32 inseam AND not "make me look like a weirdo, Mom" was perhaps the most strenuous hike of all.
Sloan, I have been walking all through chemo. Some days much more slowly than others, some basically between the couch and the bathroom, but when I do get out and around the neighborhood, I'm very glad to have done so. Good luck!

9/6:
- 1.5 hr T (2.0 MPH)
- stretches + 25 crunches
- Fitbit steps
- 1.0 hr T (2.0 MPH)
= 8.75 miles
Next time I wait until the last minute to edit someone else's work, remind me of now, when I will need to spend tomorrow morning hunting up the references and turning them into an APA style reference list. Ugh.
