Severe hip pain. Femara?
I started femara 0611. No problems until about ten days ago. At that time I started experiencing crippling back pain. So severe hard to pinpoint the exact area. So severe takes a while to get to the standing up oosition. Primary care ordered a ct scan with renal protocol on Friday. Noticed gall stones and sent me to surgeon on friday. Surgeon said location of my pain is not a gall bladder problem. Do I go to ortho now? That was my plan on Tuesday. Now I a thinking I should go to oncologist on Tuesday. Has anyone experienced such sever pain on femara for just 5 weeks? This morning pain seems to be the hip area. Percoset, 800 mg ibuprofen and muscle relaxer only provides mild relief. Anyone similar

neglected to add - oncodx score of 10. No chemo and no rads recommended. Only the femara that I have been on for a little over 5 weeks with pain presenting 10 days ago

mab60. Do you take a statin for cholesterol control? And if so, are you taking it at the same time you take the femara? There are many medicines we take that have joint and muscle pain side effects...not just femara and I found that when I didn't take them at the same time, I amazingly had the hip pain disappear. Check your medicines and if there are any that have pain as a side effect, take them at a different time. I hope this is a simple solution, but you should still see your onc if the pain is severe and doesn't relieve with pain relievers, heating pad, cold compresses, mild exercise, etc. within 2 weeks. I also wanted to share that most women need to up their exercise when taking femara. I walk about 5 miles every morning and when I dont, I have more joint pain.
Good luck, msp -
Thanks for replying. Yes I am on a statin. They are spaced about 4 hours apart. My pcp did a cat scan of the spine with renal protocol on Friday thinking there could be a kidney stone. But that result was negative. So my thought are that it is the femara. Pain is significant at time

I had pretty bad hip pain from Femara. Usually in the a.m. and for a bit afterwards, after I got up. And sleeping on my side was painful too. Switched to Aromasin and much, much better now.

good to know. How long did you stay on femara and how long after you stopped b4 you felt better
-
As soon as I stopped I felt better. I was on it for 1.5 years.

I had awful pain on Femara. I could not get up in the morning without extreme stiffness/pain in feet and it hurt to turn my head from side to side. My cholesterol also went up. If you read the insert that comes with Femara, it says 51% of patients who take the drug get hypercholesteremia. I got off the Femara but my blood cholesterol did NOT return to normal. I am now taking Arimidex and having none of the joint stiffness I had on Femara. Will be going on a low cholesterol diet to try to get that back to normal. Ask your onc about switching to Arimidex. It worked for me.
