If I understand you correctly you had a biopsy that confirmed DCIS and after that you had an MRI that showed multiple lesions in both breasts? It's impossible to tell what the other lesions are without a biopsy. But in my case they only biopsied 2 lesions since they assumed the others would be the same (and it was confirmed by the pathology result from the surgery). But it is possible to have DCIS, LCIS, IDC, ILC all at the same time. Sometimes even the hormone receptors change from one lesion to another. Your timing from diagnosis to surgery is very close to mine from last year so I know from experience that you will feel like it's taking forever to get the surgery done. But I think you will be happier to get the reconstruction started at the same time as the mastectomy. Hang in there!

And I just remembered that I felt like a freak of nature at diagnosis. It's bad enough to have 1 tumor but in my case there were too many so the radiology doc did not even bother to count them all. You may feel the same. Bilateral breast cancer is rare and so is having multiple lesions in one breast. Multiple lesions in one breast is called multifocal or multicentric, or you can be like me and have them both at the same time. And since it is pretty rare there isn't much information out there, I googled till my eyes were crossed and found contradicting information. Multifocal/multicentric tumors are often in younger women, bilateral breast cancer may be associated with BRCA mutation.

Here's an older thread about bilateral breast cancer https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/132/topic/777241?page=5

I have my fingers crossed that your diagnosis stays at DCIS and that MRI was perhaps wrong about all the lesions.

Thank you very much for the information you provided,  yes I have googled about everything possible.  MRI shows 3 in left breast and 4 in right breast.

Totally taken back by that, was positive on 1 in left axillary I found that one.  Thanks for the link also,  surgery is scheduled for October 21st double mastectomy with reconstruction months later.

Thanks again and I also hope everything goes well still terrified.  God bless you !

I know this is older but I had multiple tumors in my right breast. Thank you. I feel less alone now. I'm sorry for it but you know you're not alone either. Best wishes and blessings

People seem to be confused when I try to explain it. I quit trying, lol. I just say well one tumor was slow and the other was fast. Just to simplify it

    Hello,

My 50 yo mom had clear and bloody discharge from her left breast, and went in for a mammogram, then a 3D ultrasound, but nothing was seen until she had an MRI. They saw 3 2cm masses, and performed a biopsy that came back with secretory-like findings. Originally, her doctor said it was stage 1, grade 2 and triple neg. He said she had a very good outlook and wouldn't need chemo or radiation, only a lumpectomy. Then he came back and said she would need chemo, and came back again 2 weeks later saying she wouldn't. She just had a double mastectomy 2 days ago. After the surgery, her surgeon came out and said they got all of the cancer and that her outlook with secretory was good. The pathology report just came back today saying that she had 2 tumors in the left breast. One was 0.6 cm and the other was 6 cm. The report says the pathologist found DCIS, cribriform and micro papillary, and secretory types. It also says she is stage 3, and her doctor says she will need radiation or chemo. What I don't understand is how 5 months ago there was nothing on a mammogram, she only had 2 cm masses, was stage 1, and wasn't going to need chemo. Now she has a 6 cm mass, is stage 3 and probably needs chemo. How could they have missed a 6 cm mass? How did it take her doctors 5 months to figure out what was wrong with her? I feel like they have no idea what they are doing, and I need to find her a doctor that has treated invasive secretory carcinoma before. I'll take her anywhere. I don't care if we have to travel to the other side of the country. Any suggestions?
