Don't forget those paper plates and bowls. Who wants to wash dishes anyway?

The little square alcohol pads are very helpful when stripping your drains. You secure with one hand up close to wear it exits your body and strip down with the other. It slides better than wetting your fingers. I think there is a tube video on how to do it. I guess no one offered to show me how....good thing I knew. I am a nurse....but I could have been a desk nurse!

Don't forget to get a pair or two of Jammie's that have button tops.

If your freezer compartment is high, maybe consider finding a small step stool...you will definitely be thirsty.

And just in case no one has told you...pain meds are very constipating. MIralax is your friend.

Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

I stocked up lots of frozen, almost ready-to-eat food. Also instant cup noodle/canned soup.

Thanks Beatmon! Yeah, got to get disposable eatery ware. I don't like doing dishes for my large household of 1, much less when I'm not feeling swift! lol.

I took a combination of colace and senekot for constipation. I should have started right after surgery but didn't. It became a serious problem after a week. I would prophylactically take whichever med is your choice, but take something. Don't wait for it to become a problem. The meds they give you in surgery almost universally cause this problem.

Thanks much Jackbirdie for the tip! Did you take them at the same? Exactly how did you take the two prophylactically? And about how long would you say you have to worry about constipation? Is it as long as you are taking pain meds? I also have an Rx for Keflex antibiotics and Norco pain meds. Thanks!!

Re constipation, they brought Miralax to me in the hospital with my breakfast the morning after surgery. It's tasteless so you can mix it into any drink. I then had it every morning in apple juice while I was taking Rx pain meds. Easy and effective!

Also, about showering, the bandages covering my drains were waterproof. That made showering easy. I just tied my drains around my neck with a knee-high nylon stocking.

I took two Senekot and two Colace on an empty stomach. I didn't start right away but i should have. I would advise starting the day you get home from the hospital and continued until you stop taking opioid meds. Norco and Vicodin and oxycodone all fall into that category

The Keflex might possibly send things in the other direction so monitor yourself. For me, the big C is much worse than the big D though.

General anesthesia of any kind slows bowel action much less adding decreased activity, change in diet and pain medications to it. Even this nurse forgot the mantra and had to get DH to get me some Senokot.

Miralax is a brand name. Much cheaper to get generic - Propylene glycol. Most places would I think use the Colace/Senokot route b4 the Miralax. Very common for women after birthing esp. C-sections. Another good thing is fiber caps like generic Metamucil.

Oh thank you so much ladies! Love you gals!

Jackbirdie- So in the am before breakfast you took 2 colace and 2 senecot tabs and then ate right after or? Just in the am and no more during the day? And I agree on the big C being a bigger prob cuz with the D at least it flows out! lol

Also I read somewhere else that you recommend frozen pearls to keep cool? I have problematic heat issues already and I haven't done anything yet. Just run hot and sometimes even with a/c I'm still not comfy. Can you link what you mean? I have a neck cooler thing I got from icy cool but a face and stomach something would be fantastic as these are the worst spots for me. I'll be getting the senekot-s from amazon so if you can link what specifically you like that would be great. Trying to figure out what to get with ice packs for the hot flushes and such is nerve wracking because of course I want something that won't melt so fast and does a great job. :)

I had my preop today with my plastic surgeon. Such a nice and smart guy so I feel good about him, as I do with my bs. I asked him about showering and bandages and he said he'll take them off before I leave the hospital and will have waterproof coverings so I can shower if I like. I'm so paranoid about possible infection that I'm going to try and wait until the drains are out if it's a couple weeks. Done that before with camping. Beyond that, oy.

Thanks for all the tips. Please keep them coming. 2 weeks from today I'm on the table! ah! Time is flying by fast.. :)

I have not read Jackbirdie's comment but I think she meant frozen peas. Like a cheapo sack of green peas that you use and refreeze. Not thawed to the mushy state, they would freeze like a brick then. They conform better than hard plastics. You would not want to cook these later, so make some notation of what their use is for.

Do you have a hand-held shower for "down there" use? If not you can get a plastic squeezy bottle empty like you would put ketchup in. Use for peri care. Would assume with your knee problems you have a shower bench already. I have heard of women using a cheap plastic garden chair in the shower, which if I have any kinda surgery done is what my plans are.

You can take up to 3 colace a day and 4 senekot. I usually just needed the morning dosage but occasionally I would throw in one extra each at the end of the day.

I'm glad you brought up the peas. Peas are good and cheap, but can't be used for too long before they get gross. I used a LOT OF ice packs.. I didn't need it for temp control here in Oregon but they were extremely helpful complimenting the pain meds. They helped with swelling and to numb the pain. There are quite a few different sizes and brands. I liked this brand best:

    http://www.amazon.com/All-Temp-Comfort-Packs-10-15...=sr_1_1?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1437701220&sr=8-1&keywords=all+temp+comfort+pack

    Hope this helps

Sorry I struggled to make the link hot and then couldn't get it in the right place.

Also, btw, they will tell you not yo use heat for awhile. But when you can again, those ice packs can be used for warm moist heat as well. I had my freezer stuffed with them in all sizes, as using them constantly, I couldn't get them cold enough in time without the vast quantities hahaha. This all gets so expensive. At least some if the stuff can be used for "normal life" later

Thank you ladies! Great idea on the frozen peas. I'll have to get maybe 4 packs to recycle in and out of the freezer.

And my housekeeper who used to help an ill lady has her shower chair and walker that she said I can have (she passed a month ago).

Jackbirdie: what brand of ice packs do you like? And the end of the day popping 1 each of colace and senekot, do mean bed time or ealier? I've never taken laxatives and would rather not have to get up in middle of the night.

    Thanks so much again ladies!!

Ah , memories... When my late mother visited me, we bought a cheap plastic garden chair for her to use as you mentioned. I would store it up in the garage rafters when she wasn't visiting. After my bmx, we took it down for my use. It was very convenient and the best purchase I ever made at Wal-mart.
I dread constipation too. In hospital, the nurses kindly served me warm prune juice, in addition to colace. Not my favorite beverage, but very helpful. You may be pleasantly surprised and not have as much pain as you expected. I got off the opioids as soon as I could, but didn't hesitate to take them when needed. I also use Smooth Moves herbal tea when needed.
Lastly, I didn't own any button front shirts and didn't want to buy any. I do wear tank tops, both alone and as camisoles. Target had nice, stretchy cotton styles that I could step in to and pull up. I wore them around the house and threw one of those light buttonless knit sweater jackets. Oh, I also wore lots of pj bottoms in the house. Comfort, comfort, comfort...

I would say just start with mornings only. If you feel you need an extra shove, try before dinner. I never got woken up in the middle of the night with a "sense of urgency" if you know what I mean haha

I put a link to the gel packs I got on Amazon. Here it is again. I have trouble getting them in the right place. Sorry. Techno loser here.

Thanks Jackbirdie! I saw you posted while I was creating mine above. I'll get some ice packs too. I never need heat as I'm fine even in winter as CA doesn't really get cold enough for me to need a heat pack. :)

I wasn't permitted to lift more than 8 oz for the first 3 weeks, and I couldn't open the fridge by myself! I agree that thinking and planning ahead is the best strategy.

Another tip: tell the pharmacy NO childproof pill bottles. I couldn't open them without help. Check your over-the-counter meds too.

Thanks so much ladies! And Jannet2014, wow, didn't even think about these nasty bottles that I can't even open now! Thank you! I'm going to see if I can get them all in normal caps and not childproof at Walgreens, my pharmacy.

    Love you ladies!

Or just check the caps when you get them (or if someone picks them up) to make sure they are reversed to the non-childproof opening. I wonder if there is a pharmacy law (never checked) that they must have those 2-way caps on them. I get all my meds in one place and except for a factory sealed bottle they are all the 2-way. Ah Walgreens. They should have a profile on you that has a place for your med caps preferences.

Does anyone know the new law on Vicodin (hydrocodone)? Can it still be picked up by someone authorized on account with proper ID? Just asking for Artista. That's the only one you might have trouble getting not in person.

Thanks luvmygoats. I have my rx for Norco and will be picking it up soon so I'll ask about a second party getting it for me. I would think they would have some allowances. I mean for those who are really bedridden, what do they do?

I'll check on the caps thing too.

Thanks so much for all the help! Little things you never think of when you are "ok." lol

Just went on the Walgreens site and found where I can ask for regular caps and also put my cc card number in so I don't have to keep pulling it out. Thanks so much!!

if you need narcotics picked up, it is good to call your pharmacy and let them know someone else will be coming. Then in my case, my pharmacy required that person to know my address on file and my birthdate. You can ask your pharmacy if they gave any special rules

There was no problem providing we did those things.

also, with Norco, keep in mind it is mixed with acetaminophen, which is hard on your liver. I have had problems with elevated liver enzymes and cannot take acetaminophen/Tylenol ever. So I just ask for straight oxycodone and then I can take a bit of ibuprofen if I need a bit of extra pain relief and don't want to take additional narcotics.

Anyway, my point is, watch that you don't take any other meds, OTC or not, that have Tylenol or acetaminophen in them while you are taking the Norco. It's in a lot if things we take withought realizing it.

artista - I just posted some info for you on the stage II sisters thread. My BIL is a gastroenterologist and he recommends Miralax - or as goats suggested - the generic. I don't have the Big C as a problem, I have the opposite, I also tend not to take pain meds so I have not pre-medicated or used any softeners or laxatives. My pharmacy has made a permanent note on my file not to use childproof caps, which seem to also be adultproof sometimes!

Jackbirdie: Great idea to call the pharmacy before hand, thanks! With the long lines there all the time, I'm going to try and not deal with that myself. I'm guessing my pcp or someone will be ordering labs on my liver enzymes while on Norco. If not, I'll keep that in mind if it turns out I need it for I don't know, more than a couple weeks? I'm not into popping pills so I don't plan on staying on it for long.

SpecialK- Thanks! Yeah, I just went on to my Walgreens account and set it to not be childproof. I know right? I got frustrated one time so bad that I said screw taking my Celexa for today. I had no clue you had a choice or I would have made this change oh so long ago! lol

Artista- I also just thought of another thing, maybe silly, and maybe someone else mentioned it. But I got those bendable straws for the water next to my bed, or whatever I was drinking. It made it a lot easier to drink when I was laying down and didn't want to struggle to get more upright just for a sip of water.

they won't do labs to check in the liver enzymes unless there us a known prior problem. Also, keep in mind that refills have to be physically handed over (they can't call them in any more for this drug) so make sure to ask for a refill while you are at a follow up appt)

You may not think you'll need them, but it will be a pain if you have to ask someone to go to the surgeon's office first, then wait at the pharmacy too
