Natural killer cells are important in fighting cancer. Reducing Foxo1 enhances NK cell maturation. Foxo1 also is responsible for glucose intolerance in obesity and diabetes. (http://www.nature.com/onc/journal/v27/n16/full/onc200825a.html)

    I've always wondered if my complete lack of natural killer cells when I was 40 allowed my br cancer to start up. I had what was then called Chronic fatigue and immune disfunction syndrome. I didn't get diagnosed till after being unbelieveably sick for over 6 months. then I found a research study going on, on CFIDS, and my blood and urine were examined at different times for the study. It was found I had everything normal except not one single natural killer cell. the first line of defence. the dr. then diagnosed me with CFIDS and said it was evidence that a terrible viral war had gone on inside my body, to reduce my NK cells to zero. Took me about 7 years to slowly heal, and I have to say it was way scarier than having br ca!!! with BR CA there are definite protocols in place. with CFIDS - nothing, but you are so sick you feel like you are going to die, every system of your body is disrupted or impaired - and all this with no tests,meds, or treatment.

    DX 20 years later - a good long time to produce my whopper 10 cm tumor, despite my having a mammo every year. I do think there is/was a cause/effect connection.

    Thanks for posting, flanelette. CFIDS sounds awful. Good to know though that they can look for NK cells in urine. There's a question for my next onc visit.
