I am in need of getting a new mattress and am leaning toward some kind of memory foam but hear a lot about them being super hot. Since we all likely share a lot of body aches, just wondering what kinds of mattresses do most of you have???

Angelina, I have a orthopedic pillow top from Original Mattress Factory. I paid a good buck for the Queen size and split box. But I love it. I have had back issues for years, and more aches and pains now than ever before. And I can flip it, and rotate it. Now is not the time to Sale shop unless it is the one for you!

My friend had a memory foam and it was really hot and uncomfortable, she returned it. Maybe better to shop when the weather is hot? Just a thought. Good luck, I hope you find what you need. Cheryl

thanks Beachbum, I have not bought a mattress in way more years that advised and GOOD LORD, I had no idea how expensive. A Tempur Pedic in a queen, without anything extra, is over $5,000? I said I cannot bring myself to pay for a mattress what a used car would cost.

We have a latex mattress and I like it a lot. We have had it for 8 years and it does have the indents where we sleep but it's still way more better than a brand new innerspring we got for our summer house. I think the memory foam/tempur pedic is way over rated. Latex does not have the smell that memory foam has either.

Angelina, my mattress was on Sale for just under $1,000. I have had it 4 years, and looks brand new. For my budget, that is expensive, but loving it. Good Luck, so many options to look at.

I have a conventional innerspring with a pillow top. I hated it. Bought a 2" thick memory foam to put over. I love it. Don't think it's hot in summer, easy to move around on.

spookie, I have an old worn out mattress and I got me a memory foam topper and I do like it better than the old bed, thats whyI think I want to get a memory foam mattress. I"ve been laying on beds all over town and I am pretty sold thats what I'm getting, just not sure of the kind.

I do see latex is better but its a little pricey. I see that most places do allow you to return them. Amazon has the Sleep Innovations at good deals and great reviews and they have the top layer thats supposed to help with heat. I know when I got my topper, it was shrank down to a tiny size and you had to open it up and it swelled up before your eyes. Apparently, these mattresses are the same way, I've watched youtube video's on that. Not sure how in the heck you shrink it back to return it. But, a queen which as very great and equal refiews to things over $1,000 is less than $500, so I very well may check one out.

I have a firm...maybe serta.....I just got wedges for my legs and back...kinda a zero gravity thing. They have frames that are zero gravity that any matress but extra firm can go on. I think I am going to look into that. When pressure points hurt I think it might be cool to lower the feet or head how ever you want. I like my wedges, but a little tuff to get out of bed...lol would be better if icould lower the frame with a button so I could get out looking much smoother...lol

I also am looking for a new mattress. One that will last more then the 6 years we've had this innerspring one. I had a memory foam topper on it but with all these hot flashes had to remove it. I've thought about the Sleep Number, but have heard some bad reviews. I am leaning towards a "hotel mattress" from Serta. They are double sided and you can flip them. The search continues. Tired of waking up so much aching from soft spots in mattress.Good luck finding a good one.

Megansgrand, I know how you feel. When my husband leaves for work, I get in the middle of the bed and it seems firmer there and I sleep like a log for that one hour before I have to get up. I read online to replace a mattress after like 7 years and I dont' know when I got mine. More like 20 years or more ago, so I'm long overdue. I have a topper and that has helped, but I did not dream how how these things were. I am pretty certain I'm going with some kind of foam or latex instead of traditional. In the showroom, I liked the feel better.

My sweetie and I bought an innerspring mattress in 1984 that could be flipped over and was comfortable for over 20 years. We hauled it to use and keep at a shared family home a few years ago, thinking we would maybe enjoy a new mattress (after the taller ones came out), and hauled a new one back with us from JC Penney.

    Wrong.

We then bought a memory foam for it.

Wrong. My sweetie likes it fine but the heat from it along with my aging drying skin has left me with permanent itchy skin.

I swear by my latex foam mattress. My body relaxes the moment my body hits the mattress.

I took the plunge and ordered me a new one. Memory foam but with some kind of cool layer. It can be returned if we dont' like it. I would eventually love to have the power base but can't do it right now. I was looking at latex earlier today and was really interested in casper but my cheapness got the best of me, so I went with a regular, cheaper model.

Bought a queen size tempurpedic in 1999 and loved it, although I had to adjust my covers carefully to keep myself from becoming too hot.  Then we moved the queen size to the guest room and bought a king size tempur and love it, too.  It's almost time for a new mattress and I'm sure we'll go with another tempurpedic.  They've improved the design to solve the "too hot" problem.

A few weeks ago Costco had a tempurpedic road show and the savings was pretty great.  Didn't buy this time, but we probably will the  next time they're around.

My ex-husband has back problems and we had one of those memory foam bed toppers. I thought it made the bed feel cold to get into in the winter. I think once you're in and warmed up, it retains the heat. FWIW, my solution was to use an electric blanket to warm the bed in the winter before getting in, and then turning it off.

peggy, I have had leg problems for years and one of my favorite things was in winter, to turn my electric blanket on and heat up the bed before I got in. Sometimes, if my legs hurt, nothing would help but that electric blanket. But, since Arimidex, I can't sleep under it, I smother. We have dual controls and I'll wake up, burning up and look and my husband has his side on 6. Mumble mumble. Then I have to get up, go around and turn his side off. Last week, I took a week off from Arimidex and I was once again, cold when I went to bed, but I'm back on, so no blanket for me, for only another 9 years.

We have a Serta iComfort and it has cooling gel and a cooling mattress cover. We love it and will never buy anything else. It does take a couple weeks to break it in though. We also bought the risers with it and would leave it in the TV mode while we were at work. That really helped break it in. Some brands do that for you too

HI angelia50, I will agree the cost was high. But, I felt from a money to value standpoint I have made out. I've had mine for 10 years now and its the first mattress I have not had to call in on its warranty after 5 years.

Just a reminder, most mattresses have a warranty and many people don't think to use them. Prior to my tempurpedic, I always had to call in on mine at about the 5 year mark due to sagging etc. I always have received my money back or a good pro-rated portion of it. Many of us forget to use the warranty!

Good luck mattress shopping and happy sleeping.

bevin, thanks. I sure hope this works out for us. I sure dont' know how I'll fit it in a box to return it. Even taking melatonin, I have trouble sleeping, so anything would be a welcome help.

Kay b, it's not a bed, not a sleep number. Just a metal frame, that you can put any matress on, except extra firm. They come in many price ranges, from bare bones model, to ones that have speakers . Found it at carsons furniture store. Don't know how many stores carry them. Good luc

Bought a latex mattress a couple years ago from mattresses.net and I love it. They have some affordable options. And bamboo sheets help with the memory foam heat, if you go that route. Latex is hypoallergenic.

I have learned so much for reading though the posts on this topic. The chemopause and femara have brought on some crazy hot flashes. My DH need to buy a new mattress. I had no idea there were these new options.

I already bought one of those silicon memory foam pillows. Very expensive, but it's helped keep my head cooler.

I have a firm innerspring with a pillow top which I bought when I moved to Seattle 8 years ago. I find it divine! I don't think I would want foam. I got it off Craig's List from a guy who had bought it to save his marriage, and it was brand new. I hope he is happy now, because I have been more than thrilled with the bed he never got to use.

I think the price new was $1500. Got it for a fraction of that.

Not just the mattress, but what goes on top. I found sheets that have a bit of silk in them. Gorgeous and so comfortable. Then, I found a Hungarian Goose Down comforter on eBay. Brand new, other than a small rip that had been sewn. As I was stuffing it in a duvet cover, who cares! My o my! I use my old comforter for vineyard camping.

Agree that one place to indulge oneself is with a luxurious bed and trappings. Sweet dreams! - Claire

I don't like getting "old". But I am enjoying the freedoms that go with it!

Our lovely old innerspring mattress now is on a frame that we built, and the frame is on 4-inch wheels, so that when we visit the home in the Lower 48 where the weather is warmer and where the mattress is, we just roll it outside and dream away on it under the open sky... It is lovely for enjoying the sunrise AND breakfast in bed!

We have had a sleep number for about 19 years. It was about the same price as the the other mattresses we were looking at during that time. Don't know if the others would have held up that long and we don't have to turn it. All in all, we would buy it again. We have never had a problem with it and I like that it is adjustable as far as firmness/softness. Now days you can also adjust them up and down. I haven't looked on their site for years but they used to have several different price categories on the mattresses to pick from maybe they still do.

We just have a regular firm innerspring mattress, several years old now. I believe it's a Serta. I had to buy a 1" memory foam topper for it, though. I'd never sleep without it.

I have had a Sleep Number bed for years and love it. Originally I had the regular flat mattress. Shortly before diagnosis I got an adjustable Sleep Number mattress. It was so helpful after surgery to be able to adjust the head up to make it easier to get out of bed. And I can adjust the firmness based on aches and pains of the day.
