Celebrities are on the front pages of magazines when they are in treatment for this disease but when one dies of it the headlines don't mention that.  I feel it gives the public the sense that everyone wins their battle with this disease.    Am I wrong about that?

MusicLover, No, I don't think you are wrong.

I think it's like anything else in life, unless something affects a person directly, most people will turn a blind eye and really don't want to know. The media is set up for "feel good" stories - battle and triumph. That's why I think people that write these articles are so important. The more articles and blogs written about the reality of stage IV, the more numbers we can reach.

It seems like it's all about gimmicks in today's society. Why do you think the Lou Gehrig's ice bucket challenge was so successful?? My Mother passed away from Lou Gehrig's disease in 1993. At that time, most people didn't even know what it was other than a disease named after a baseball player. Look at the media attention it's gotten over the past year. You think most of those people doing the ice bucket challenge even knew about the devastation that Lou Gerhig's disease can cause a family?? It's doubtful. Komen is another gimmick where everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon. Most don't even know where the funds go. Even many BC patients don't know where the funds go, but they still participate.

RESEARCH NEEDS A GIMMICK. Until we come up with a good one, you won't see the masses signing the petition. A STAR, a GIMMICK and the Ellen Show.....that's the ticket.

I think we all need to brainstorm. Nothing more powerful than a bunch of women coming up with ideas.

    Bump.

The whole petition thing is starting to irritate me. I looked on that site and saw some pretty crazy things that people were petitioning for with a ridiculous amount of signatures. Something as important as this struggles to get 10,000? There's something wrong with this picture. I wish there was some way it could get more exposure.

You can't assume everyone always sees your FB posts. Many are missed or ppl are just busy and in too much of a hurry to read or take action. No problem reposting IMO.

One of the problems with this petition is the request that all Breast Cancer Charities commit at least 50% of total donations to medical research and innovation.

The focus of the petition is Komen - and however I might want more of Komen money to be allocated to research, I believe that the request of 50% of total donations is an unrealistic expectation.

Nevertheless, the idea that the petition asks for all Breast Cancer Charities to commit 50% is ill-conceived and does not deal with the realities of how different Breast Cancer Charities operate and what each charity's mission is.

For instance, BreastCancer.Org would fall under this broad encompassing term "Breast Cancer Charity". If BCO attempted to give 50% of total donations to medical research then something would have to give. Something would go by the wayside. It would change the face and function of BCO. And BCO is a 501(c)(3) that does a fantastic job with its finances. AND it receives grants from some other foundations in order to operate. (EG. Avon Foundation gave BCO a $50,000 grant in 2014 in order for BCO to provide materials to metastic breast care patients.)

    Do we need change? Yes.

Will I sign this petition? No

dltnhm, I appreciate your input. You've made some valid points, and I'd be interested to hear if others feel the same as you, or have their own reasons for not supporting the petition.

I thought long and hard about my response. I also had to examine why I signed the petition.

I look at this petition as a way for non profits to sit up and take notice. My main objective in signing this petition is to get Komen to donate more money to research. The amount of money they collect is mind bobbling. It is my opinion the terms "Komen for a Cure" and "Race for the Cure" is very misleading. Why not Komen for Awareness? If the words "cure" weren't in their campaign, would they be bringing in the same money? I seriously doubt it. Before I was diagnosed with BC, I honestly thought all the money they collected with their races throughout the country went to the cure, as it suggests.

I also believe we need change. I think this is the first step for Komen and other large non profits to take notice. Do I think that ALL non profits should donate 50%? NO.

It was my hope that the petition would shine a spotlight on how donation dollars are being spent. And more importantly, expose the misleading verbiage being used in marketing campaigns. If I'm running for a cure, 50% doesn't seem like an unreasonable expectation. 75% doesn't even seem unreasonable. Expose where the money for "the cure" is really going. I don't know of too many people that will take the time to log onto a website and read financial statements. I know I had to really dig deep to find Komen's on their website. People hear "cure" and are automatically on-board.

Thanks again for your input. It's always nice to look at something from another person's perspective.

IMO I don't think the petition is unrealistic.  I think that anyone diagnosed with breast cancer would like to see a cure for this disease and 50% does not seem like too much.  I am sure that "research" can include a lot of gray areas so I don't see this as a problem at all.

(I don't want to get in to a debate, this is my opinion and everyone has right to their own opinion.  I agree to disagree, I hope that you do too.)

Honestly, I think I would sign ALMOST anything that would aid in getting more research dollars to find a cure. I don't want my children having to go through any of this, and I'm tired of losing friends to this disease. I just wish we could come up with a plan that everyone could get behind.

I think the petition is an attempt to do SOMETHING to try and get these charities to make better use of fundraising dollars. It is probably very unlikely that Komen, or any other entity, will do exactly what the petition asks....we don't know what their operating costs are etc...but at least, it is an attempt to make them aware of the public's concern/request that more $$$ actually go towards research and a cure.
