Does anyone have issues with Exemestane (Aromasin) or are you all too young to be on it? It's for after menopause.
I've had weird, minor things that now I think back I'm attributing to that. Will see my oncologist next month and talk to her about it. I get tingling in my left arm, like it's falling asleep. Very minor and not often so it's more a nuisance than anything else. Also, on one occasion after I had a salad w/blue cheese and a beer, my feet swelled up. It went away after I walked around some and I thought maybe it was just bloating from the salt, except it was just my feet. My pants, rings, etc. were not tight. And lately I'm feeling some joint pain but I'm assuming it's the extreme cold and snow we've had here.
My running times have slowed over the past year, and I'm looking for an excuse - something to blame it on other than AGE!!!
-
hey LuvLuLu,
I'm 37 and just started Aromasin. I get Lupron shots that put me into menopause. I just switched to it from femara because of the severe joint pain I was having in the femara. I still have very slight joint pain but nothing like before. I follow a vegan diet so I can't speak to eating cheese or animal products. My time are def slow but I think it's because of the weather and not being able to get out there much.
I also think this cold weather is really effecting mood!!! We are almost through it though so hang in there!! Def call your onc though. That's what they are there for!
Hugs,
Renee

My MO has me on 5,000 to 10,000 IU of D3 vitamin for joint pain. It does help. Every blood test they check Vit. D. I'm on Femara.

Thank you girls . . . now any hints on how I can get FASTER??
-
my New medal hanger..30in and its full
I suppose I could take the non Disney ones off
-
Rseman - run NY, run/walk NY, walk NY ... You get the point. I blew up around mile 16 and struggled the rest of the way in. It didn't matter people cheered for me like I was a rock star even when I was shuffling through 13 min miles. It is a once in a lifetime experience. I am in the lottery with about 1 in 10 chance of getting in. Fingers crossed.
LuvLuLu - To get faster in general increase consistency (run more days), increase distance (slowly), then add one day a week of speed work. More fun way to add speed work is to race every weekend. That said we do get slower with age. Your meds can effect your training. Most important listen to your body. Some people use a heart rate monitor to see if they are going too fast or too slow in training.
On the treadmill tomorrow. Minus 20 windchill in AM. My furnace hasn't shut off all day.

Hello everyone! I was thrilled to find this thread today.
This time last year I was getting ready to run my 11th marathon. Now, I'm feeling good if I can run three miles. How times have changed.
I'm five weeks post-chemo and have finished #8 of 35 rads. I'm getting my strength back but it is agonizingly slow. My RBC is still in the anemic zone so I'm trying to be patient but it isn't easy.
I've enjoyed reading through your posts. I'm not ready to decide whether or not I'll race this year but it isgood to start thinking about the possibilities....
-
Welcome bratscher and LARock! The runs will get easier and you will eventually get back to where you were if that is what you want.
Rseman - as marie11 said, do what you need to do on race day if you want to run NY. I find that the biggest part to a marathon is the mental aspect of running for so long. Dory from Finding Nemo often pays me a visit in the second half of a marathon and reminds me to "just keep running"
Panthrah. - that is a pretty cool medal holder. If you are not opposed to making more holes in your wall you could always get a couple of hooks to hang up the medals that don't fit on your holder. That way they could all be displayed together.
Not much running for me lately, silly cold weather. We actually have an Extreme Cold Warning in effect today. We haven't gotten that much snow but lots of wind and ice. I could use the dreadmill at work but it's pretty crowded at the gym at lunch time, yeah a lame excuse! I'm jealous of those of you with warm weather
-
Thank you Tammy. Luckily I haven't had any side effect from Tamoxifen yet. I'll keep running!
LARock, I remember you on Sept. Chemo thread. Glad to see you on this thread. I'm 14 weeks PFC, and 3 weeks since last radiation. I'm slowly regaining my strength. You're almost done with active treatments. Hang in there!
Panthrah, your medal hanger looks pretty impressive! I ordered a different one from Amazon.
I got new pair of running shoes, went for 6-mile run to the beach yesterday. I ran very slow but felt good. orry for the runners in cold weather... We had very nice (almost too warm) weather in LA.
-
That medal hanger rocks!!!
My hubby now has bronchitis and I'm still nursing this knee but I know it will all come together for our Arizona Half on the 28th. My playlist is complete with the hope I can finish in just under two hours.
I think I am going to lay off the races this year and just focus on the marathon training. And I'm all signed up for Fred's Team. I am so excited that I am actually going to do this. I guess it can officially be added to the list!!

Goldlining- GAH I was just there an saw no such thing! is that one yours?
-
Hi Marie, Thx, I already run about 5 x/week - 2 of those runs are interval runs on the treadmill, the rest are outside, usually around 8 miles at a comfortable pace. Currently - well, in a perfect week - I run about 30 miles. When I trained for my marathon in October of course it was more. I also do weight work - including squats, lunges, etc. and yoga . . .
I honestly feel if I lost about 10 lbs I would get faster. Working on that. Unfortunately, I'd rather work out for hours than deprive myself!
And of course, if I were 10 years younger . . .
-
hahaha I said I was going to lay off the races to marathon train!!! Well I just agreed to do the Cape Cod Ragnar May 8-9. Ahhhhh, I've never done one before so this is going to be interesting. I always do this ughhhh
-
Rseman- Good for you in signing up to do a relay race! Will you be on a 6 or 12 person team? I LOVE those types of races. I have done the Smoky Mountain Relay Race twice and will miss it this year due to my BMX.
-
hey trailrose, it's a 12 person thank goodness!! I don't think I could handle a six person. I was so happy to be asked. I've been working so hard on my running. I really think it's helping me stay well. Now if this weather would cooperate and warm up!!
-
Hi Rseman, I was on a 12 person team too. Have you picked out or been given which legs you are doing? Are you going to do 2 runs in 1 day as practice for the relay? I would run short runs twice a day but only once a week while training for my relay. I saw on a previous post that you do some trail running. Will there be trails or road too?
-
It's now been 2 weeks since I started tamoxifen, and I am having a lot of trouble with joint pain, especially my hips. Is this for real, or due to something other than tamoxifen, or all in my head? I never had pain and stiffness like this before, even when I was doing a lot of mileage. It seems odd this would come on so suddenly. I don't think I can take 5 years of this.
-
Trailrose- I don't have all the info yet but I am part of a team where the members have done multiple Ragnars in different states so I am leaving all the decisions up to them. My office mate is one of the members and he knows my ability really well so I'll just do what he recommends. I've done trail races before and LOVE them so if there are any trails that would be wonderful. The team isn't out there to win so it is a lot of fun. One year they did win best video! and another year best decorated van! So you get the picture
Bratscher-I've never been on tamoxifen but was taking Femara and the joint pain was really bad. I'm on Aromasin now and it has eased up quite a bit and is now bearable.
Gonna feel like -18 here tonight!! Keep warm.
-
bratscher - I started taking tamoxifen 10 days ago. Hip joint pain started this week. I'm not sure if this is from the med or 6-mile run on Sunday.... I'll have to wait to see.
-
Hockeycat, I asked my oncologist's nurse about this, and she was a bit vague. She said that side effects usually take "some time" to resolve, and they hoped I could stay on tamoxifen at least 3 months. She also didn't say right out that joint pain is actually a side effect. So I am just keeping an eye on things.
-
I was on AIs and had joint pain, but it did get a bit better with time. My onc said it was like the body throws a temper tantrum because it's suddenly deprived of estrogen, and you get all the s/e because of the "tantrum". She said for most women, somewhere around the 9 month mark the body adjusts and stops throwing its tantrum and the symptoms ease. Unfortunately I apparently have a very bratty body because my symptoms didn't ease at all till about 3 years in. But over those years I learned a few tricks to help manage the joint pain.
- Do more joint flexibility exercises like yoga and Pilates. I took a weekly gentle yoga class, and also had yoga and Pilates DVDs I could do at home so I got in at least two sessions a week. Yin yoga, where you hold lower body poses for up to 5 minutes at a time, was especially helpful.
- Mix up your workouts. Don't just run for your aerobic workout - cross training, like using an elliptical or bike, gives your joints a break. I had a lot more issues when I all I did was run than when I'd force myself to do something different at least one day a week.
- Don't do the same thing two days in a row. If you run one day, do yoga the next, maybe run the next, then do weights the next. I tended to have more issues if I did the same type of exercise 2 days in a row.
- Give yourself at least one rest day a week. That means no running, no yoga, no weights, no nothing. I found that when I did that, I had less joint pain than when I tried to do something every day.
- I also did some acupuncture that first year which really helped.
Those were things that helped get me through my 5 years. It's frustrating not to do exactly what you want when you want, but I found I'd have to pay the price in pain when I didn't follow the suggestions above. Despite that, a few times things got so bad that I was ready to quit AIs altogether. At that point, my onc suggested that I take a one month "vacation" from letrozole. I found that the symptoms began to ease within a week or 10 days, and by the end of the month I was much better. The good thing was that the benefits of the vacation seemed to persist - once I went back on letrozole, the symptoms didn't come back right away - I got several weeks of reduced joint pain after the month was over.
-
panthrah, I saw the pic on MousePlanet twitter with a comment that it should have been there for the Star Wars Half. Star Wars isn't my cup of tea so not one of my many (many) ear hats (-:3
-
Well, that "keeping an eye on things" didn't last too long...this morning I woke up with very painful stiffness in one ankle, as though I'd sprained it. My shoulders, back, and fingers are stiff as well. This is after only 16 days on tamoxifen; I feel like a little old lady with bones full of ground glass. I'm going to stop taking tamoxifen for a bit to see if any of this goes away.
-
One week to the Arizona Half!! I haven't run since Feb 2 and my longest run was only 8.5 miles because of weather and injury issues. Anyone out there run this race and have any advice? What to wear, what to expect? This will by my second half but I'm anxious because of the training issues.
Wish I were running and it wasn't snowing!

NatsFan, thank you for the tips! It was so painful that I had to limp... And a few days ago the pain woke me up in early morning so I had to take oxycodone to go back to sleep. I've started taking fish oil, doing gentle stretch every day. I used anti inflammatory patch my mom sent me, which helped alot! I was able to play hockey and run 5 miles this weekend.
Brascher, how's your joint pain? Hope you are feeling better...
-
HockeyCat, thanks for asking...I've been off tamoxifen for two whole days (!) and I daresay I feel a lot better. We'll see, though...
Have you told your doctor how bad it hurts? If it wakes you up at night, and if you're limping, that's definitely worth mentioning to your doctor.
-
Bratscher, glad to hear you are feeling better. The pain became more manageable after oxycodene and anti-flammatory patch. I'm seeing my MO in two weeks. I'll talk to her then.
-
I would love to be able to run again. I still have tissue expanders and my PS said no running. I am new to this site and so glad I found it. I love reading about the different races and definitely think a Disney race is in my future. I have two girls - 6 and 8 - and they would love to cheer me on with the princesses
-
Welcome Lucy1010! It shouldn't be too long until you can run again but your PS would likely be AOK with walking to tide you over. I think some have had more amenable PSs who did allow them to run carefully in a reasonable time, but I'll leave it to them to share their experiences with TEs.
For those tracking the upcoming Disney run registrations, the Wine and Dine registrations should open soon. That's the after-hours run in early November. As always, it will sell out fast.
For those who are seriously, out-of-control, addicted to Disney running, Disneyland Paris has announced theirs will be September 2016, and they have a website where you can sign up for email notification of more details. It's unclear whether it's runDisney or DLP in charge, but I'm in regardless!
(Edited to put back missing words, oops.)
