On the track topic, I did some training on the track at Variety Village in Toronto while my daughter swam there, and it sucked all the rebound energy out of your feet. I liked the shelter but did not like the slow speed-to-effort ratio at all. It's not for me. That said, I presume that the type of track material was necessary for the many wheelchair athletes that used the facility, and I imagine training on that track for sprinters would make your performance on regular outdoor tracks seem easy-breezy.

Re track running I'll be sure to post a report....if only to show off my running prowess (I've been told it is best to have a positive mental attitude)...

I never did many races until my son became a runner.  Now it's a great bonding experience with my youngest - although we don't run together, he's way too fast for me.  But he had me sign up for the "Wild Rover Series".  It consists of:  Maria's Frozen Shamrock 3-Miler, Feb. 22, Haverhill, MA; Claddagh Pub 4-Miler, March 1, Lawrence, MA and the Hynes Tavern 5-Miler, March 8, Lowell, MA.  I guess the bling is to die for.  And it does sound like fun.  Though I think Jesse has an ulterior motive.  He knows if I sign up for a race, I will pick up the tab for both of us . . .

Oncearunner, when you get a minute to spare between all your crazy runs, please post the above for me.  Thanks!

Enjoy your winter running, all . . .

    Hi gang!

Thank you for all the inspiration!  I was a pretty avid runner before BC.  My med onc recommended I stop running thru treatment and thank goodness for listening to his advice.  Treatment nearly killed me - TWICE!  Now treatment is over, my body is starting to heal.  January 1st, I started my couch to 5K training and then I got the flu!  So, back to it again!  It is so discouraging that I cannot just lace up my shoes and run 5K!!!  But I am determined to get it back.  I'm signed up for a 5K on March 21st.  The goal is to finish!!!

Oncearunner - the Dopey Challenge sounds AAAAAA-mazing!  So inspiring - thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing!  I'll get there someday!

Please add my race, March 21st, Strongsville Super Saturday 5K - Thank you!!!

I signed up for Coaster Run 5k on March 8. I'll run through Knott's Berry Farm, and get a slice of Boysenberry pie and a Snoopy medal at the finish line. Fun!

Welcome curlyq, trailrose, roseman and other newcomers I may have missed.  I hope you find this discussion thread as helpful to you as I did (and still do).   And thank you once for taking over management of the 2015 thread!  Curlyq hang in there - you will come back, just listen to your body and give yourself some time.

Ran a 15K this past weekend where it was low to mid 40s at the start and rained the entire time!  We were a soggy, drippy, waterlogged mess.  But it's done, and one of those I put in the "characterbuilder" bucket.  I ran with a friend and we chatted the entire time in lieu of racing it full tilt, and I'm so glad we made that choice.  It really helped with the cold and wet.  And we got nifty tech shirts - a great tech shirt is always a bonus in my book.

They are calling for rain / snow this weekend so my running friends and I decided we didn't want to do that 2 weeks in a row.  So we did our long run this morning.  Before work. If only I had thought ahead and figured out a way to get a hot breakfast delivered to the office!

Gold - hope those ribs are healing up.  Tammy - that sounds pretty awesome to me. Lulu - what  great experiences for you and your son to share.  And once, incredible, just incredible.

    Have a good weekend all!

hi everyone, my I feel rather unaccomplished reading all of your posts. I have running every morning, about 2-3 miles, with my dog, for the past 10 years or so. I basically love food, and have no will power to diet. Once I hit my forties, I realized that I needed to do something. Anyway, just had my SNB and lumpy 2 days ago, and feel great. Just wondering how soon I can get back out there. Because I run on dirt roads and live in VT, it's cold, icey and snowy, and dark at 5:30 am. Even with my yacktracks, I worry about falling. But I need to get back to it soon, as it's beneficial for me in so many other ways. I know not push myself, and I'm worried about my energy level once treatment starts, which I've yet to have determined. It's great to have found this thread 😄

welcome bikerbabe - 2-3 miles a day over 10 years is a lot of consistency and in my book certainly makes you an accomplished runner. I am a little further south than you and have slightly warmer weather but have spent years out there at 5 am. Mostly I just try to do the best I can in the winter. When it's slippery out I try to run with a group so they will find the ice first. I also do a fair number of runs on the treadmill. For me one rule is that if the yaktraxs go on then I take my cell phone too. I fall every few years. As far as when to get back out there ask your surgeon. Walking should be ok even if running isn't.

Speaking of weather today was a bust. Shoveled wet heavy snow instead.

Once - if all goes as planned it's the full marathon in Cleveland.

    Welcome Curlyq1974 and Bikerbabe17!

Bikerbabe17 - definitively ask your doctor about when you can start running again, but I was cleared to run about 20 days after surgery with my surgeon's permission. The biggest thing is to listen to your body. I found I needed a lot of support when running after surgery and found that some of my sports bras bugged my ALND incision. Things are back to normal now (over a year since surgery) but thought I would give you that heads up for when you are cleared to run.

LuvLuLu - that race series sounds like it has a pub theme to it, did I get that right? If so it sounds like it's the type of pub crawl that I could get behind :)

I haven't run since Disney but I think I'll head out for a short run tomorrow morning. I'm getting the running itch again, plus I can look at a bottle of PowerAid without being revolted again!

Rseman-I'd be all over a Rock n Roll half in Brooklyn! I signed up for Another Mother Runner's virtual half marathon plan with a friend, and we'll run it in early May.

Bikerbabe17, running every day for the past 10 years sounds like a great accomplishment! I started running in 2007, but haven't been able to run everyday even before BC. I love food and have no will power to diet, too. Running and playing hockey keeps me in shape. ;-) I had lumpectomy and SNB last summer. My doctor cleared me to exercise two weeks after the surgery, but told me to take it easy. I tried to run 3 weeks after, but couldn't as my scar hurt when I ran. I waited for about 6 weeks to start running. We had a beautiful warm weather this weekend. Today the temp went up over 70! I ran to the beach and back for about 5 miles while my hubby skated along (he is not a runner....) This was the first time since BC that I was able to run more than 3 miles. I felt pretty good!

Oncearunner, yes I believe it does sound like a pub crawl!  Should be lots of fun.

Bikerbabe, you're awesome. That's quite an achievement.

Marie, I'm a 5 am runner too and worry about the ice.  I don't go out alone, though.  We've had a great winter so far, been able to run on nice, dry roads.  The cold is never really a problem, it's the snow and ice I'm afraid of.

Now it looks like we'll be inside for the next few days, anyway, as we're gonna get hit HARD starting this afternoon and all day tomorrow.  Lucky you, hockeycat, out there in LA!

In a way I'm looking forward to hunkering down for the duration of the storm, but it can be dangerous.  Me and all that food . . .

    Stay safe, everyone!

I've been out for a walk every morning now, it's so hard not to run, and to keep my arm still.  I'm hoping the Dr gives me the all clear soon.  I know I shouldn't rush, but this morning I couldn't walk fast enough to get warm, so I guess I have to add another layer.  Tomorrow, snow, snow, snow :)  Looking forward to it, we haven't had a real nor'easter yet this winter.  Work is now officially closed.  At some point during the day, the dog and I will go out for a little playtime in the snow.  Spring will be here soon enough.

And LuvLuLu, all the food you eat tomorrow will just give you energy to run on Wednesday!  But these are perfect days to home and baking and sipping hot cocoa :)

Warm thoughts to those in the northeast US. We're north of that system, so it's cold and dry here.

To those in the sunny south, well, I'm just jealous!

Bikerbabe17, the lumpectomy for me was trickier to pick up after than the mastectomy, because of the jiggle, but it won't be long and you'll be back at it. A great sportsbra (I'm a Shock Absorber fan, myself, model B5044, and have it in lots of colours) is worth so much more when jiggle has that extra ouch.

    Hang in there everyone!

Forgot to post - tomorrow (Tuesday) is the opening of Disneyland Half / Dumbo Double Dare registration for Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club, noon Eastern time. Crossing my fingers I can login and snag a space before they run out of the early batch!

The regular registration will open February 10, probably also noon Eastern time.

    W00t - Dumbo Double Dare!!

    Disneyland 10K: 5 September 2015

Disneyland Half Marathon (10th anniversary event): 6 September 2015.

This will be my sixth Coast to Coast Challenge.

Word to the wise: the Dumbo Double Dare passholder head-start block of registrations sold out in 26 minutes! The 10K was gone in 32 minutes.

If you plan to login to register on Feb 10, get your credit card ready and hit the link at 12:01 pm Eastern time. Cross your fingers they fix the server problems before then. It was awful today. The link went live before the page did, and then the registration page took the submit button and died - Page Not Found. Did it have my money or not? No time to fret - I had to start over, then it told me a registration for the same event was already pending, so I clicked through to shopping cart and payment and I have my confirmation number so all's well that ends well, but a lot of perturbed folks out there, I think. From Twitter, it seems they did NOT hold spots for people who were in the middle of completing the form (as they do with things like buying shoes or airplane tickets online).

Stay warm and dry in Boston, LuvLuLu!

Star Wars Rebel Challenge at Disneyland Recap

It was freaking AMAZING! the outfits were off the charts.. the spectators were alllllll over and full of energy.. the water stations were spazzy and screaming ( not looking bored and cold) , the bands were dancing. my husband and i played tag the last 2 miles. not a clue how we felt good enough to do so but we did :P LOOOOVED the new course.. and we cut off 8 min off our reg time!! EIGHT MIN!!! even after doing the 10k the day before!! ( obviously if we arent generally fast...but huge improvement for us.. we are proud) and I FINALLY got to high 5 Leia Minnie, Jedi Mickey, Stormtrooper Donald and my husband high fived Ewok Chip n Dale at the finish line :p

According to my steps app.. fri 9 miles, sat 13 miles, sun 27 miles!!

Because I had so much fun that weekend I want to sign up for ALL the RunDisney races!! I wont.. I want to but I wont... I dont think. I was twitching at work today because of the Dumbo Double Dare going on sale but I knew that I didnt plan on doing that one. even though it is a 10 year anniversary medal *twitches more*

I AM looking at the Avengers ( the weekend before the 3 day) because if you look at the dates.. I think they added the 10k.. which means.. possibly adding a "Challenge" which of course I want that medal :P

Im sorry to everyone who has bad weather and snow and ice.. stay warm and be safe

Thanks Tammy! I went for another run for 3 miles today. I'm slowly regaining my strength. :) I saw my MO today. I'm starting Tamoxifen soon. Not looking forward to side effects... Anyway, to celebrate finishing all the active treatments, my hubby and I signed up for Kings Fantasy Camp! I always wanted to do this but it's so expensive.... We've been through a lot since last summer, so we decided to treat ourselves.

panthrah, congrats on PR! Cutting 8 mins is huge, and doing that while having fun is awesome! I can't wait for Tinker Bell Half.

Panthrah, sounds like you had a ball! And 8 minutes is HUGE! Hockeycat, little by little you're getting there. Don't stress ahead of time about the tamoxifen. I never had a problem.

Rseman, I feel your pain! Just came in from the cold. Went out to shovel for about an hour. It's about 14 degrees here, but I worked up a sweat and the snow is very light. The air felt so good that I had to take a short walk afterwards. I guess there's beauty in every season.

Hubby's now out getting the Dunkin' and I'm looking forward to that.

Panthrah that sounds like such fun! Amazing how the good amenities and energy translates into time improvement! Congratulations!

I am still twitching about the Dumbo Double Dare because I have been wired up over signing up and I knew it was going to be a race just to register. Honestly, I was in the middle of a speaking engagement, just finished speaking and about to lunch with the hosts and I said "excuse me while I login and register for this run". I am awful! :o (The head start on the race registrations is seriously the best reason to have an annual pass to the park.)

Did everybody see the photo of the Boston Marathon finish line, shovelled in the snow? It's not a "mystery man" any more but it makes a great motivational image.

Stay warm, fellow northerners. Southerners, send some of your warmth this way.

So great to see everyone's stories.

And a belated thank you to Oncearunner for taking over the thread. Put me down for:

Feb 1 - NatsFan - Country Road Run 5 Miler

Forecast for race time is 26 degrees - but since I'm a walking hot flash, that's a perfect temp for me!

OMG I am dreading an 8-9 mile run tomorrow here in NY!!! Today feels like 0 and tomorrow is supposed to be 35 so thank goodness for that right?!?!? After my run it's a jump in the Atlantic Ocean for the Make-A-Wish Polar Bear Swim with 10,000 plus other people. It is going to be a CRAZY day!!!!

Enjoy your weekend everyone!!! Wishing I was running around Disney right about now ;)

OH Rseman, I feel your pain! It's in the negative degrees here in the Boston area with wind. I'm supposed to meet my running partner at 6:15 am tomorrow for an 8-miler. Still single digits but less wind.

35 will be positively balmy. But then you're gonna follow it up with an ocean dip??? That's just crazy talk!!

I'm off to San Francisco to visit my sister on Tuesday. But we're supposed to get about a foot of snow here on Monday! Hope my flight doesn't get delayed . . . looking forward to running in 60+ degree weather!!

Panthrah - great time on the half, sounds like the Star Wars weekend was fun. That's the thing I love about Disney races, the entertainment along the course from Disney and the participants.

I loved seeing the Boston Finish Line stories this week. It's one of the few times you see positive stories in the news.

I managed to get out for one run this week at lunch time and that was it. I was supposed to do the Polar Hero 5k yesterday and all week I was dreading doing it. I was not looking forward to being outside and waiting in the cold for the race to start, finding parking (it was in a part of town with little parking and the parking available costs a fortune), running it on my own... Basically, my inner child was having a tantrum at the prospect of running this race. Given how I was feeling about the race, and the fact that it only cost me 25$ for my entry fee since I got it through Groupon, I decided to not run it. Strangely, I don't feel guilty about it, it was the right call to make for my sanity. I need to sit down and determine what my running goals for the year are going to be. Time to refocus :)

Oh and I can second the Disney Registration troubles, I had the same issues when I signed up for Dopey last April.

Stay warm and enjoy your runs!
