Accessory or Ectopic Breast Tissue in the Axilla?

Hi all,

After being diagnosed with IDC and having bilateral mastectomies/recon in NOLA, I had noticed an axillary lump on my breast cancer side for several months.

None of my doctors knew what it was, but I had an ultrasound today and the radiologist told me it was likely accessory breast tissue. Given the history of cancer, she recommended I consider excision. There is a chance of recurrence there, the same as in normal breast tissue.

Has anyone had experience with this? I had NO idea that this could be the case! Thought that my preop MRI would have picked it up...

Thanks!

    Eloqui,

I had BMX in 2003 for high grade DCIS, I noticed a lump on my breast ca side closer to my side under my arm, was repeatedly told it was nothing. November of 2013 I was diagnosed with IDC. That lump was axillary tissue not removed during my surgeries, thats exactly where I had my recurrence. Have it removed now, then you dont ever have to worry about it. Sue

Thanks sue219. Wow.. So none of your imaging of the underarm lump suggested that it could be breast tissue?

Sorry you had to go through a recurrence.

They believe it was left over breast tissue, they just cant prove it. So I had 6 cycles of TCHP and now herceptin/perjeta for a long time. All of this could have been avoided if they just removed it.
