susan - we open gifts by the big tree, but I kind of like the traveling from tree to tree idea!  Like a Christmas Tree progressive dinner!  I am finally feeling better, but wore myself out the last few days - today has been pretty quiet.  DD left early, DS and DH went to the movies.  I took a nap!  One of my fave leftover dishes with lamb was one my mom made - called Lamb Hot Pot.  You can also use beef.  Layers of meat, thinly sliced onion, thinly sliced potatoes, a layer of pan gravy, generous salt and pepper, then layer again.  And possibly again!  Into a medium oven until the potatoes are cooked - so yum!

moon - sorry about mr. moon waxing and waning - hope he is doing ok - and you, too!  Leek and potato soup sounds yum too!

Soup is sounding good but it is HOT here, and kind of sticky.  Not sure why.

luv - the white bean, kale and kielbasa soup sounds yum too!  Yes, I would like to bottle DD's energy too!  I remember 25 - you could bounce a quarter off any part of me and I never needed to sleep - those days are long gone for me, lol!

twins - welcome!  This is a super group - with recipes and in every way!  It truly is a kitchen table - in good times and bad.

Susan, I am feeling good again, thanks for asking.  You posted that link to the potato leek soup for me this past summer.  I made it and really like it.  You're probably tired for good reason and your body and mind are telling you, "Rest me, please."

Luv, the kale, bean and sausage soup looks very good.  I always like to cook my own beans.  It's so easy and doesn't take a long time.

SK, glad you're recovering and starting to feel a little better.

    Welcome, Twin.

Moon, sounds like you're all set for some good eating.  I, too, hope that Mr. Moon is doing well after his surgery.

My pot of chicken and dumplings came out really, really good.  And we have a bowl of leftovers.  Plus I made two batches of dumpling dough and didn't use all of it.  So I have a package of uncooked dumplings in the freezer.  This type of dumpling is similar to rustic flat noodles.  A very high carb meal and a treat, not a dish I can afford to eat often.  Maybe that's why it's special.

The recipe for the dough calls for cake flour and I didn't have any.  Actually I never buy it, but I think I will the next time I decide to make dumplings.  Lacey, your 00 flour would probably be good in the recipe.  I roll the dough out very, very thin but it puffs up when dropped into the bubbling broth.  Should probably get out the mixer attachment for pasta.

Have the weirdest problem with my laptop.  The plug that goes into the computer to provide power isn't making a good connection.  So I guess I'll have to take it to Best Buy.  It's a few years old but perfectly good for my purposes.  The battery no longer holds a charge for any length of time.  I can use dh's tablet but I can type on the laptop keyboard so much more quickly.  Problems, problems!

Wow, everyone's soups and chicken and dumplings (slicks) are making my hand itching to cook! Or maybe it's itching because it's healing. Fingers (other hand) crossed! I noticed a pretty significant bruise in the palm under the bandage. At least I can shower thanks to dh, a plastic bag and duct tape. Cooks country just had a recipe for white bean and kale soup that I'll be trying as soon as I'm able.

Dh is doing a pretty good job of keeping me fed, although tonight is carryout pizza lol. Last night he made spaghetti with sauce I had in the freezer. I'm trying not to be too "hands on" with him because I do appreciate his efforts. He cooks everything in a cold pan (eggs, meat, anything) which is hard for me to watch without comment. We've had discussions about the Maillard effect, sticking, etc. to no avail. What can I say, he's German. "You can always tell a German but you can't tell him much." His argument? "I've always done it this way."

Susan! Of course you're tired! (Wonder) Woman, take a break!

Glad a lot of you are feeling better, sorry others are not.

I'm trying to decide what to buy with an Amazon gift certificate. A tagine? Probably. I already ordered a ceramic honer for my knives and a portable timer that I can wear around my neck. Useful for when I'm upstairs and the oven is downstairs.

Susan, that's a wonderful website. I loved all the sauces and beans. I was particularly taken with the Yellow Indian Woman beans.

Btw, the thumb is healing and looks much less like raw meat.

auntie - how I the whole hand and thumb situation from the surgery?  Glad your DH is taking good care of you!

carole - your dumplings sound a bit like my MIL's pot pie, Pennsylvania Dutch style - which is not really pot pie as I know it. I think we all had this conversation once before.

Love the sounds of the soups mentioned....of course, that kale sausage, bean soup is the entry level dish for getting hooked on kale. ;) Watch out, Luv!

Nancy, glad to see that DH is keeping you nourished, even tho he just can't seem to get the pan temp right. I have to say tho, that I would prefer that to what my DH does...keeps the pan on the highest heat possible before putting food in (this has to do with his cooking omelets, which is basically what he cooks!). It makes me crazy, since I worry about potential for fire, or for poison fumes from any teflon pans. So enjoy the low heat. ;)

Twins, welcome, and thanks for the input. I will definitely ask for a mask...do worry about all those coming in for chemo treatments...even tho I seem to be fighting this bug well. I think you may well enjoy our kitchen table group!

I decided to rally and do something with the chicken breasts that I picked up at WF on Friday, lest they go bad in the fridge. I also did not think DH would be up for more kale soup, and definitely NOT any of my cabbage soup. So I checked in the fridge, found some Italian chicken sausage, red peppers, prosciutto, and onions. Also had a half box of farfalle, so made a "toss" with some of the chicken, cut into bite sized pieces, the rest of those ingredients, a 1/4 cup of chicken "better than bouillion", and a splash of balsamic. Put it all in a casserole and dotted it with fresh mozzarella cheese (from our pizza effort on Friday)and grated parm, and put it under a low broiler until that melted. It really was tasty....tho I had about a quarter cup full in the attempt to stay true to my cabbage soup regimen for a few days. DH loved it! His wife made pasta....yay! Also made an easy cuke salad since I was running out of steam after making the main dish.

Carole, I have never made a dumpling in my life....but I bet that 00 flour would make some good ones, as you suggest. Just made me think about a pic my DDIL posted on Facebook with a friend of theirs showing my DGS how to use a pasta making machine (hope I am not repeating myself). I would be more than thrilled that a DGS of mine might be interested in cooking. He was adorably attentive during the process. Oh, why not post it here.....

Off to check out Downton Abbey....have a good evening all.

Oh Ladies, all your food stories (and pics) make me hungry.

Chicken and dumplings (rolled kind) was one my favorite meals my grandma made.  that and a lettuce salad with bright orange French dressing and I was one happy granddaughter..

Had a rough few first days of the New Year.  My Dads little cat (feral) that him and my mom tried to make into a house cat passed away on New Years Day evening.  He is heartbroken.  She had been ailing but was too feisty to get into a carrier until New Years Day, so off to the Emergency Vet clinic we went.  She had Liver Failure.  He told her at the clinic she was his best friend in the world.

Then, on Saturday, in the mail were two envelopes from the Secretary of State, telling him his drivers licences was being suspended for medical reasons..... He, of course is blaming me for this, but he has had 3 physicians question his continued driving, and his new Primary care determined it was time to stop.....he hasn't followed the directions in the letter and says he is going to "fight it".... I just hope I don't get called to come bail him out of jail......

He was really upset with me, and I finally said, while driving him home for his hearing aid appointment. well I guess you don't want to go out for fish tonight after all  if you are upset with me do you ?   And he said in a little voice,---no I'll go to dinner.....He loves the walleye dinners at a little diner here in town. And   He is still talking about the oysters, so yes, I think we should start doing it more often.

It is cold and snowed a bit last night here and the temps are really gonna drop tonight with wind chill advisory from midnight until noon with negative chill factors.   Then perhaps 2-4 inches of snow Mon night into Tues. and then below zero temps on Wed.  All I know is my tires were grabbing the pavement more than they ever have this a.m. when I went over to check on my Dad.

Dad was making ham and beans  (Crockpot) and cornbread tonight at his house and I made Sloppy Joes..... Also bought the fixings for Mexican Chicken ( I love that stuff)

Special, I feel for you with your cold.  I am not coughing and have stopped blowing, but I think the trick was the steroid I got early.  And running the darn vaporizer all the time.  Love the person who made the lotion infused tissues, though..... what a great idea....

Oh my goodness, i've only been off since last midnight & I'm so far behind. Susan - had to laugh out loud about Mr. Moon in eclipse. And yes I'm exhausted just hearing about your days. Moon - I hope you know I'm laughing w/love. Hope he's recovering. Nance - try Glad Press n'Seal. It's what the ortho's use for casts & surgeons here use for knee replacements. I used for my mastectomy. You will be able to ditch the tape. Lacey - great pict of your DGS. How fun. Welcome twins. Special - I love your Christmas stories. I agree w/you - I would have used a bush by the road or gone behind a dumpster. Carole - I've never made dumplings either.

Redhead - my Dad got lost at 94 on the way to the grocery store & my Mom's caretaker finally called the cops. He finally had the sense to ring someone's doorbell & neighbors got him home. I flew out to CA & was there the next morning when the police showed up. The cop wanted me to take away my Dad's license - ha ha ha. I told him that he had the uniform & the badge, etc. and to that generation I was just a "girl" so it was up to him. Dad called & ordered the form and planned to have his doc submit him for reinstatement but somehow I was never able to "find" the form when I was out there to help him fill it in. Whew!!

My Dad did not take to the idea of no car either. He used a scooter for a year or so. Until he kept falling off of that because he couldn't tell where the curb was ;)

Thanks for the goods thoughts. I loved the Mr Moon comments BTW!. LOL

Ok here's a pic of downtown yesterday. Just thought I'd leave you with peacefulness. No I didn't take this. LOLimage

Well Shit, is a milder word than I would have used.......Just sit tight.  Your Doctor will have something up his/her sleeve.  They usually do.  Meanwhile, prayers going up from IL where we are now getting an inch of snow an hour if you believe the geeks on the radio......

Damn. Doctor didn't call. Instead I received one from the assistant scheduling me for an early appointment "before your next treatment." So.... does this mean we are continuing regular treatments for three months and then scanning? Or, are we discussing a new treatment that day? Time for me to stop being so "nice" and insist that I get calls from a MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL.

Okay. As you can imagine, focusing on code wasn't in the cards as I waited for a call back. So, I trimmed up the leftover leg of lamb, browned the scraps for the fond, and then built a base of onions, carrots, before adding some beef stock. I am thinking that I will freeze as is, and then add the mashed potato topping when I defrost. But, then I had to figure out dinner. I had planned on the leftover veal with an asparagus risotto. Ack. No chicken stock! How did that happen? So, the other day I was reading about a soup that is considered the national dish of Morocoo. Eaten year round, but especially every evening to break the Ramadan fast. And so, I made this..... some lamb, onions, carrots, lots of ginger, tomatoes, chick peas, lentils and then finished with a bit of butter and lemon juice. A true one bowl meal. I love soup. Tonight I wanted soup. I needed that warm hug.

I am having a very adult cocktail. And then I will have another. And then tomorrow, I will wake early, leave another message for my medical team and get back to work.

    1. Oh fuck, Susan! I am still hoping that your fatigue is just from you overdoing things. Hoping along with Redheaded that your doc does have something up the proverbial sleeve. Thoughts seriously and caringly with you, and I'm around if you feel like venting, seriously swearing, etc.....

On a more banal note, I made a salad tonight that was delightful ( by accident) arugula, cauliflower pieces, red onion and roasted red peppers (sliced, from a jar) dressed with evoo and fig infused balsamic. I must remember this one.

Yes, Susan, NICE does not fit into this equation! It seems outrageous to me that even potentially concerning news would be shared by an assistant with no immediate doc follow up. Call call call

Susan, that soup sounds hearty and delicious.  Am focusing on "minor" and hoping for infinitesimal.

Made a yummy slaw tonight to go with microwaved leftover dumplings.  Finely sliced common cabbage, slivers of yellow bell pepper, sliced avocado at buttery ripe stage.  White balsamic vinegar and mayo dressing.  Love having leftovers when it's something I really like.

Made some progress today with re-organizing kitchen storage.  After 20 yrs. I recently noticed that seldom-used items occupy some handy locations.  So some are being re-located and some will travel to Good Will.

I, too, was thinking of some stronger words than just "shit"... That just plain sucks....blows.....and many other uncomplimentary things.

Is it that a lot of doctors are good with diseases but not people...or is it just those are the ones we remember????????

Interesting question posed, Eric. But I do also remember my best docs, or even the best actions of my medium docs.

Carole, like the sound of that slaw.

Had a MO appt today...and did grab a mask and sat in a remote spot to protect all the vulnerable folks in the waiting room. Still feel like a renegade not agreeing to the AI, but as I explained again to the doc, the impact on my brain by the tamox ( given my mother's family hx of dementia and alzheimers....putting aside the crippled hands issue) leaves me in terror at the notion of any estrogen stripping. Rock and a hard place situation....and feeling like a bad patient. Thank you for the crash course on guilt, Sister Patrick Francis. :/

lacey - I absolutely love that you dropped an f-bomb

susan - for a second I thought you were going to say that after the two adult cocktails, you were going to wake up in the morning and have another one.  I think you should if you want to - then make that call...

Today DH and I discussed moving the washer/dryer to the other side of the common wall between the laundry room and the garage.  That would mean that I can abandon the ridiculous pantry I currently have and have the whole laundry room as a walk in pantry.  Be still my heart.

We went out to eat at our local German beer hall - so much fun!  I had potato pancakes and we played trivia.  The team was DH/DS/me.  Between the three of us we came in second, with a late surge answering this question - which was awesome.

    Match the right pairs:

number of Shirley Temple's ringlets                                                   Richard Petty's racing number

age of Amy Winehouse when she passed away                                number of Dec. of Independence signers

number of the street where the old NY Times bldg. is                        number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet

Special - you're up late. Sounds like fun. Here's another trivia question. I just finally watched the movie Jersey Boys. (thank you NetFlix since it was only in our theaters for 1 week). Not as good as on the stage show, but still. What's the name of the group? No fair if you recently saw the production.

Susan - what about Bloody Mary's for breakfast before you call? Fingers & toes crossed.

Lacey - I admire you for making a choice that works for you. I'm more interested in quality than quantity at this point.

Going on a road trip tomorrow to "Mel's Diner" for lunch. And i don't have to drive!!! Hmmm - peach cobbler or blueberry?

minus - I assume it is the Four Seasons.  I used to have a 45 player where you put the record in the slot, like a CD player and Sherry Baby was my fave 45.

I vote for Peach cobbler - I'm old school.

Yup - Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. I used to wish my name was Sherry. Your comment makes me wonder - I know I have a 33-1/3 vinyl of the Four Seasons Greatest Hits but I'll bet I have a 45 up in the top of the closet.

I used to love that little record player - I think it worked on batteries because I always took it camping at the beach.  It is funny - I just resumed contact with an old friend I grew up with and we played that record player all the time - we played the Theme From a Summer Place and danced around in my living room.  I need to ask her if she remembers that!

Loving the teeny bopper memories, especially at 4 AM after being awake all night. Made the mistake of drinking the most delicious cup of coffee when I returned from MO and shopping errands mid-afternoon. Totally forgot that this new one was not de-caf. Oy! Sensitive to caffeine, much?!

Loved these songs, too. I was quite the teeny bopper, and living outside of Philly, I had the opportunity to dance (once!) on the original American Bandstand. We all thought we'd died and gone to heaven. Instead, we got detention from the mother superior of our school for lying about our ages. We were not quite fourteen, the entry age. Totally worth the punishment!

Several years ago we collaborated with some other couples to hold a When I'm Sixty-Four party for so e friends. DH was the delegated DJ and he amassed quite the collection of oldies to which we all danced the night away. He has since collected volumes of music, many types including Indian Bongra (sp?), and gets asked to DJ some parties, most recently a father daughter girl scout troop dance. This was high bid at a silent auction. He needs to get up to speed on the most current teen tunes over this month.

Think I'll try for a few bits of shut-eye....the leaded glass guy is showing up to take out the whole window frame in the morning.....in 10 degree weather. Oy! Oh wait! It IS morning!!! Yikes......
