Carole: Yes the chocolate wine was good, but VERY rich. I think next time I'll serve w/coffee on the side, sort of like a liquor. I served it cold from the fridge.

    Happy New Year to Everyone!

I hope all of you with the colds or flu feel better quickly. It's so quiet here. No one was here last night. My neighbor saved me from a too quiet New Year's Day by taking me to see The Hobbit. We has a great dinner with all the kids and spouses on Saturday. Regular Ham and mashed with corn from the summer. Ate almost all even the brown and serve rolls. LOL

Supper okay was chili. I was going to make that for last night but my DH didn't bother to let me know he wasn't coming and I ate leftovers. So had to make it today because the meat was getting old.

I hope everyone stays healthy this year from now on! Much love to all.

Oweee Nancy. Your chopping hand too. I hope someone has been waiting on you today. I've never had more than a nicely sliced finger. What a way to start 2015.

Yes, Minus I'm NW of Ft Worth in northern Parker county. We had a good bit of icing this morning. Trees coated. DH called into work. People were out/about though slowly this morning. It's doing something out there right now 33 degrees.

We had exciting leftovers last night which was really quite good. This morning DH made bacon, eggs and frozen hash brown patties. Tonight I made a ham steak, those lovely canned black eyed peas, cornbread from scratch and some baked apple slices in brown sugar syrup. Pretty good. Next I need to conquer green things again. That is just not what I want to eat right now. Maybe tomorrow. Still coughing/hacking/using tissues like crazy.

Hi SK! Nancy I just read about your hand. Ouch. Hope it heals quickly.

We are do for snow here. We'll see.

My phone issues will end soon. I'm turning this one in and they'll send me a new one for $100. Sucks but cheaper than a new one and I love the phone with its camera. Best Buy was very good about helping me. So i will always buy from hem rather tan online or his type of stuff.

    Happy New Year!!!!

I am back in the urban world once again. Three days of dogs [5 HUGE dogs,] food, drink, and fun was enough for me. I was ready to come home this morning. We were on the road by 9am and home at 11:30. First night, L grilled the most gorgeous 2 inch swordfish steaks and served them with a chimichurri sauce. Excellent! The next night I did a low and slow rib roast served two sauces: a horseradish-cream sauce and blue cheese butter. I roasted some lovely small potatoes and made a large green salad. Last night was the leg of lamb. Used a rosemary, garlic, and a fancy French red pepper. You blast the sucker, and then turn down the heat, dumping Vermouth over the beast at that time. I made a sweet potato gratin and prepared some garlic sautéed spinach. I don't know how 6 people ate so much lamb, but they sure did. Since I only had one slice, someone (s) enjoyed lots of it. I turned the pan drippings, which was the flavored wine into a gravy.

Turns out I don't like horseradish cream sauce. I would have been much happier with straight horseradish. But blue cheese and beef... match made in heaven!

Here is the lamb all cooked.

    Gorgeous roast lamb!

Wondering if Nancy had the carpal tunnel surgery today.  If you did, Nancy, hope you're doing well.

We had leftovers for dinner.  Tomorrow is a clean slate.

The current issue of Cooking Light is really good.  A whole section on chicken with ethnic recipes, Italian, Mexican, Middle Eastern.  There is one recipe with preserved lemon.

    Wow Susan, that's a beaut!

Carole, I did have the surgery this morning. A mere 2 1/2 hours from check in to check out. No real pain at this point, just some soreness and stiffness. And a huge bandage that has to stay dry for five days. So far so good! A good friend brought us dinner tonight. Don't know where tomorrow's is coming from lol

Oh Susan that looks so good.

Ouchy on the thumb issues and all the upper respiratory infections

I have been enjoying a lovely jarred pumpkin pasta sauce

I have been contacted and am considering being an investigator on a memory impaired study full time

It is not something that I would usually do, a permanent job, but I think that it is so important

Alzheimer's is such a devastating illness

It is freezing in here, the cabin is not well insulated and the cats are actually friends and cuddling out of necessity

I am making split pea soup with rosemary and anticipating snow here tomorrow

Yippee! Fun! No snow yet here in this state in New England, So looking forward to it.

Bedo - love the idea of you working on this study. Would you be in an office or traveling around? I agree with you & Eric's mother about the importance. You can always work full time until you leave... Nance - how if the world were you even typing with the surgery & the thumb? Happy healing & hope it's quick with little pain. Susan - all the food sounds scrumptious. More food than I'd eat in 2 weeks. Moon - glad you'll have a new phone. I agree about Best Buy.

Eric your Mom seems like a wonderful person!

Bedo, I hope you do take the job. I think you'd like it. And, as whoever in the last page said, it's permanent until you leave! LOL

Susan the lamb looked so good.

    Nancy heal fast.

My DH had sx this Tuesday for numbness in his hand again, (this time they did sx on his shoulder since the one on his elbow didnt help) and didn't make it home for New Years. Not coming home this weekend either. I offered to go with him for the sx but he preferred his brother. I offered to go up there after, but he said no. I feel a bit slighted but oh well. We've been having a bit of trouble again. Weird because things were better during my chemo and recovery. LOL. But even with a better marriage as incentive, I'm don't want to go back there. LOL!

Wishing everyone a wonderful New Year.

Happy for you that the surgery is over, Nancy! Also impressed with your swype ability! :)

Special, I got a kick out of your comment about tissue overuse. Sounds like my daily experience given my constant allergies. I would not know what it is like to be very far from a tissue box. EVER! :/ I seriously should have the Kimberly Clark stock! Glad that you are on the mend. DH is starting to feel better today also....now to get rid of that cough!

Keeping you in my thoughts, Monica, and hoping for happier days for you. Hopefully enjoying your new little grandbaby will keep some light in each day.

Bedo, sounds like an interesting opportunity. And yes, unless they shakle you to a desk, do it until you "can't" do it, like Minus says.

Hi to everyone else! Need to get dinner on. I am doing a detox soup to make up for my evil sweet eating ways over the holidays. DH is getting a meatball sandwich and some kale soup (that kale soup is calorically a bigger meal than my ascetic one!)

Yesterday, DH asked me about when I was going to use my 00 flour, so I decided to make pizza with it. HOWEVER, in my frenzy to make the dough and veggie toppings, I took out my regular flour and proceeded. Discovered when we sat down to eat that I totally ignored the 00 bag on the shelf, after DH asked how I liked working with it. Oh well....Another time.....probablyafter I like the direction on the scales! That pizza was really good tho..... . Made a Greek salad to go with it.

Dinner was left overs again. 8 mixed veggies conglomeration from my dinner out on Tuesday. No one ate their veggies so I brought them all home. Left over LongGrain & Wild Rice. Don't think I'll buy the 90 minute package for wild rice again. On the other hand, my taste may have changed enough that it won't work however i cook it. Used to be a favorite. Last of the steak loin strips that I'd frozen after munching off all the bones & fat last week. No doubt leftover gingerbread w/whipped cream before I go to bed.

Pizza sounds wonderful Lacey. Moon - hope you'll be able to push aside the hurt feelings and move forward. Driving w/some friends to an old fashioned "diner" for lunch on Tuesday. Things like meatloaf, chicken fried steak, fried cat fish, etc. And yes, peach cobbler.

Cleaned my cupboards on NY Eve and gave away or tossed all the duplicate & triplicate purchases I made during chemo. Where was my brain? Some were 3 years past "best use date", but I think many things in bottles will be OK. But really - 3 new bottles of Tabasco when I use one every 3 years? Four jars of Rothschild Lemon Wasabi Sauce. It's hard to find here so I guess I just bought one whenever I saw it. I'm trying hard to clean out the fridge & eventually the freezer(s) in January. I'm out of fresh vegetables & salad so maybe will eat the frozen. Still have a couple of Royal Riviera Comice Pears from both Harry & David and Pitman Davis. They are sooooo sweet & you can eat them with at spoon.

Moon, marriage is hard. I was and am not good at it after two of them, though I admit I really didn't mean it when I said forever no matter what, I guess I meant "I hope " Most of you are smarter than I when it comes to marriage, so being smarter than I am, I am hoping for happiness for you

Minus, you are funny. I just bought 12 28 oz cans of tomatoes on sale.

Lacy, buy the OTC Nasacort, I couldn't live without it

Eric, thank you for your message

Some of my friends have said that I should try to get the research job. I might be happy to settle down for awhile sooo, now that they're interested and we have spoken by phone and I emailed my CV, how do I close the deal?

Oh, and I would not be an Investigator, but a Sub-Investigator, really not that smart.

I made the split pea soup and took some to my landlords. They are 68 and 78. I hope they like it. I gave them sour cream to put on top.

    Tomorrow more eggplant parmesan

I am loving the snow and the excitement of my 4 year old neighbor!

Trying to use dh's tablet.  Last night and again tonight it froze up as I was writing a post.  Also tries to anticipate the word I'm using.  Very distracting!

Bedo, it tries to separate your name into two parts. Your pea soup sounds perfect for cold weather.  Hope the new job is interesting.

Nancy, glad you have the first surgery behind you.

Moon, hugs to you.  The worse phase of  "for better or worse" is no fun.

Minus, I re-organized my pantry today and threw away some items "best used" by 2012!

On the cooking front, I did stage one of a big pot of chicken'n dumplings for dinner at my mother's house tomorrow.  I simmered two chickens minus the breast of one chicken with onion, celery, carrot, peppercorns, bay leaves and salt.  Tomorrow I'll make the dough and roll thin sheets for the dumplings.  The broth is very tasty and the chicken as well.

Lacey, we had sauté'd kale as a side tonight and we both gave it a passing grade.  The kale came in a 16 oz. bag, already chopped.  I blanched it in salted water prior to sauté-ing it in a skillet with evoo, garlic and pepper flakes.  Before serving, sprinkled wine vinegar.  This method of preliminary blanching of bitter greens in salted water is recommended in a cookbook devoted to veggies published by ATK or Cook's Country.

We also had brats bought in MN.  They were edible but not wonderful.

I am definitely fighting off the virus that DH has been carrying about. My head is not right, and living proof is that I forgot to comment on that gorgeous roast Susan posted. WOW!

Bedo, I have yet to try Nasacort, but will. I use Zyrtec or the analogous one that I think starts with a "C" and really get no relief. It would be oddly nice not to be in search of tissues constantly.

Carole, I feel your Ipad "dysfunctional corrections" pain! We actually ventured out to the Apple Store yesterday to get my new Ipad Air, but I have yet to use it yet. If my head is clearer, I'll sit down with DH and go over everything. Also ordered a nice teal cover for it for a fraction of what they tried to sell me at Apple.

DH decided he would like to work at the Apple Store since he figured he could easily fit into the role of the sales guy who helped us. He would be in heaven since he has gotten in touch with his "inner geek" in recent years.

Carole, I'm so happy you enjoyed your kale sautee! Just think of all that associated "goodness" you took in. I like your recipe!

Snow and now freezing rain here....:(. Guess I can't complain. It is January in NE afterall

Finally had Christmas last night - yay!  DD left at 5 am this morning to drive north and be at work by 9 - pulling her boat too.  Her biggest issue was finding a restroom at about 6 on her route through the rural areas between here and there!  She classified the one she found as "the world's worst restroom" so apparently it was a character-building experience.  I suggested a bush by the side of the deserted road - she exclaimed "never" but that is what I might have done...  She has a long day - 3 1/2 hour drive, 9 hour workday which includes a scuba dive.  She works until 6 tonight, then has to be back at 5 am tomorrow.  DS and DH are at the movies so I am contemplating a bubble bath and a perusal of my new gluten free cookbooks.  Santa brought them at my direction, lol!

susan's roast made me hungry - as did bedo's pea soup.  Love, love, love pea soup - but I am the only one in the family that does, so I hardly ever have any!

We had brisket last night with smashed Yukon gold potatoes, skin on, and sautéed carrots.  Made my mom's lemon jello cake - at least a 50 year old recipe - very nostalgic.  It was my brother's b-day cake of choice.  Opened gifts and had a sparkling rose - it was fun.  DD made us a photo album of family photos from our Austria/Germany trip last summer - so special.

lacey - I feel your Kleenex pain - I am thrilled to be only blowing my nose a few times a day, instead of what seemed like a few times a minute.  Eeesh!

Been hard to find a few moments to post anything beside my hit-and-run food posts. Not sure what is going on, but I have just been so very tired lately. Add that to too much work, and dealing with feeding the family, and I haven't had much susan-time.

Lacey, so sorry to hear that you are getting whatever everyone else seems to have. I think your husband would look mighty dapper in an Apple shirt. And then you wouldn't have to head to the Genius Bar ever. He could carry in your technology challenges when he went to work.

Eric, Yes. I would love your mother's Hobart, but alas, it is not to be. Still pondering the mixer dilemma. No easy answers since there are almost no reviews of the lower-end commercial machines.

Special K, so glad you had the kids home for your holiday. When you open the gifts, which tree do you use? Or do you travel from tree to tree? Are you getting any better yet?

Redhead, loved the story of your father's oyster meal. Maybe at age 87 he needs a quarterly "new year's eve" with that special dinner with you?

Bedo, are you going to give us a report on your numerous B-Day dinners? Can I assume that mussels were involved for at least one of them?

Nancy, have I missed your surgery followup? How are you healing? That thumb looks pretty nasty after the Grater Incident of 2014. Is this healing as well? I find that a little bit of pomegranate molasses goes a very long way. This is the brand that my local Armenian markets carry: http://www.formaggiokitchen.com/shop/product_info....

Moon, distressing to hear that Mr. Moon is going through an eclipse again. Can't remember when or where on these boards I read your full story, but have always admired your strength. Glad that you had some folks around you over the holidays.

Carole, are healthy again yet? [what is with all this illness?] and same with Luv....

Food around here has been simple. First night home from the Cape, I made a Pasta e Fagioli soup with some turkey stock I had in the freezer. Had to make some pasta, so I made two eggs worth of the stuff and cut it finely so I could freeze three soup portions. Last night, I made a teriyaki salmon that was delicious. Turns out teriyaki sauce takes about 4 minutes to make start to finish. Did the screaming hot pan under the broiler, throw on the fish, and then cook. Pulled it out after 5 minutes, poured off all the fat [man was this almond fatty] and the cooked on the stovetop for a few more minutes with the sauce. Wow was this good. Made Mr. 02143 his standard Sunday French toast for lunch today. Tonight I am making a veal parmegian with the last of last summer's veal. Not great meat [butcher didn't freeze properly] so this is the perfect prep. We brought home 1/3 of the leftover lamb from the Cape which I will make into Shepard's Pie. Chances are I will freeze that. Had enough red meat for a while. Tomorrow, a trip to the chicken store and refill all the veggie bins.

Feeling yucky....so pampering myself by doing nothing but watching cooking shows on the "Create" channel.

Do any of you buy/order aronia berries. Just watched a show about them. Sound like a good addition to my daily smoothie recipe for anti oxidant benefits. Expensive, but I suppose prescriptions are too!

Wow, Special, to be young again, like DD, and take on so much in one day! Her family gift is lovely.

Have MO appt tomorrow and am worried about parking myself in the waiting room given whatever I am germinating. Don't feel sick enough to cancel, unless I go South by then. No fever and I'm not coughing, so I suppose I could go with, or ask for,a mask to offer protection to others.

Yikes, Susan you are tired??!! I am exhausted from reading your wonderful post filled with not only delightful observations and comments to us threaders, but all the wonderful meals you have turned out since returning from the Cape! You are amazing! But please take a nap! There are so many bugs going around that your body needs to stave off.

And I am glad that you "get" that my DH would be a porteur to the Genius Bar, not someone standing behind it. ;) Even he is well aware of that! But oh the fun he thinks he would have sporting that red shirt with people who really know a lot more than he doesabout computers.

Lacey - I always ask for a mask at the MO's if I feel bad. So many people there have very low immunity, and I'm always worried about getting them sick. Mind you, I have asked for a mast once or twice when someone was hacking next to me.

So I came here expecting dinner ideas and seems it is more a nice place where you all support each other, but... Baked pork loin chops, microwaved broccoli, fettuccine alfredo.

Wow sk, your DD really ages after you! LOL. Susan I'm always amazed at what you accomplish.

Twins, we kinda consider this to be our kitchen table. LOL what ever we talk about there seems appropriate here! Usually it's all about what on the table food wise but sometimes it's what's on our plates to handle! LOL

I went to do a bit of grocery shopping. Bought leeks, carrots, potatoes and pork chops. Got 4 nice size boneless ones for about 5 bucks on sale. Was going to get beef but pork was way cheaper. Also bought a crab stuffed sole for 5 bucks. So at least 4 meals covered! LOL thinking of potato and leek soup for tonight.

    Welcome twins.

Making white bean, kale and kielbasa soup in a bit. Grocery did have frozen kale but not anymore. Did get a fair size bag of fresh. The clamshell I bought at WallyWorld was excellent. I hope this is as good. I think there is some cheese bread frozen. Yay DH finally dug down and found my frozen leeks. DH made pizza last night so I have a bunch of green onions already cut up thank you very much.

    http://relish.com/recipes/white-bean-kale-and-kiel...

Anyone have a good idea to use up a bunch of potatoes? I had some large bakers left and bought a clearance sale bag yesterday. I could make scalloped I guess and those Greek lemon ones. Maybe freeze something. I wish I had kept for ref. the potato leek soup I made but it's been months. Any suggestions in looking for a good one? Well I see Moon is also looking for the same thing or maybe she has her recipe in hand. Soup just sounds good. Deep freeze the middle of the week

Susan I have serious envy of the market link you posted for Nancy.

Nancy - I hope your hand is healing well and someone is providing you with lots of delicious food.

Special - can we bottle your DD's energy? Hope you are feeling better. I actually went to church today but no hand shaking for me. And no singing either, bummer.
