So...whats for dinner?

Susan, hoping for good scans too.
Our cat loves it when we get up early. He meows to remind us of our obligation, runs for the kitchen and waits impatiently for food.
-
susan - sending good scan karma
We have the world's laziest dog - if we get up early he looks peeved and goes back to sleep.
-
Susan - hoping for only the best of outcomes on your scan.
I think there is a bit of leftover meatloaf in freezer. Might thaw that out later. If I can find the energy which will only be to wash/slice potatoes, want to make those Greek lemon potatoes again.
-
Susan, Thank you! It is my birthday and I have three dinners lined up for today tomorrow and the next day. I am so popular-not I am wishing you the best for your scan. I can't believe you remembered! I am not worthy..I have a mind like a rusty trap.
I'm cashing in on the freebies. Everyone check the web for birthday freebies.
Minus, thanks, I would love the recipes and your daughter is very generous. We have a horse rescue in our state that has a descendant of Man o War that was on the block for- well.... the unmentionable. Best of luck to her.
Special, loved your story about the big horse bowing. My cats don't even raise their heads if it's cold... they are psychic They're probably thinking " I hope that woman leaves us some food on the way out"
Goat and all you sick sisters, I hope you feel better soon. Drink lots or warm fluids and stay under the covers.
-
I managed to take a stroll out thru the goatyard and let them out to eat a bit of greenery in a place they don't usually get to go. Pretty nice day today before the cold invades starting overnight. I think we've seen the last of the golden orb for the week. Dicey if we will get freezing rain Wed night/Thurs am. One prediction was for 1/4 inch but not a source I'm familiar with unsure of how much trust to give it. I do need DH to bring some cut wood up from the back. He's off tomorrow, day not too bad so that is doable. Getting him to drive me to grocery. I'll be doing good to find a few things there b4 the knees get weak. Have a darned pres. to pick up. Hate the refill hassle of weekly Fosamax. Sometimes it will not refill and clerk has to manually do it. I knew last Friday it would prob. not so didn't even bother to call it in.
Happy Birthday Bedo.
-
Have a happy birthday Bedo.
-
Happy B-day Bedo!!! For today we can change that to mean Bedo-Day!
-
Happy Birthday Bedo-----
Luvmygoats---temps dropping here in IL too. Just came back from the store picking up staples for me and eggs for my next door neighbor with the flu. Think I made a smart decision to curl up on the couch tonight instead of bowling. cool mist humidifier seems to help both me (coughing) and the cat (sneezing) She got a shot of antibiotic today and I am swallowing mine..... which is exactly how I prefer things.....
-
happy birthday Bedo!
-
Happy birthday, Bedo! You are very deserving of birthday wishes.
Hoping for good results on the scan, Susan.
Still waiting for a NOLA dinner report, Nance.
Eric, while shopping around online for pomegranate molasses, I happened upon a recipe for making it yourself. Pomegranate juice, lemon juice and sugar. Then read some responses to the recipe by people who had omitted the lemon juice and sugar and reduced the juice to a syrup. On Amazon the bottled product is pricey.
Spent at least 2 hrs. today getting new cell phones and switching service. I was about to pass out from hunger when we finally finished up. Fortunately there was a sandwich place nearby, Fire House. We had never eaten there. We had the brisket and cheddar sub on a delicious wheat hoagie bread, and the sandwich was very good.
Since we ate so late, 2 pm, we'll have a bowl of leftover red beans and rice for dinner and I'll cook tonight's planned dinner tomorrow night.
It is over two weeks since I became ill with this head cold/sinus congestion. The bad news is that I'm still not "well." I suspect that I had/have a milder version of SpecialK's flu. I say "milder" because I don't think I ever had fever. For the last week I've been using a Neti Pot to flush my sinuses. I must have the cleanest sinuses in the neighborhood! I felt good enough today to go to the gym. I'm up 5 to 6 lbs on the scales.
-
Carole, we've come home then gone again so I haven't been at my computer and may not be until Thursday. I promise I'll tell you all about it!
I'm hoping to find pomegranate molasses at global foods whenever I can get there again. I'm curious about the homemade stuff.
-
Assuming I can get motivated to pack, we are headed to the Cape for three days. Tonight L will be cooking something. Wednesday I have a rib eye roast that I will serve with roasted potatoes and a large salad. Thursday is the leg of lamb with sweet potato gratin and whatever vegetable L bought. I usually do more complicated meals down there, but this year, I am just too tired. Everyone has stated flatly: Simple Susan. I have promised myself only four hours of coding a day. And then fun. I really should be canceling this little vacation, but I really need this small break.
Back on Friday. Be well,
*susan*
-
susan - yes, you do need this break - have a great time!
-
Carole, I think we had the same version---I haven't run a temp either, but my gosh the blowing and coughing....I started with this on the 17th of December, went to the doc on Sunday. The Z-pak and steroid plus the cool mist humidifier seems to be making some improvement.
Cold here in Central Il today. I am still eating up Left over Ham. Thinking I may cube up some in a Mac & Cheese casserole with some frozen peas. Couldn't believe all the vegetable soup was consumed that I cooked before my 88 year old aunt arrived. I think I only had 2 bowls of it. Her and my 87 year old Dad ate the entire pot which was HUGE.... They must have hollow legs. Sent her home with some leftovers that my Dad said he wouldn't eat and the amount of food that had been consumed by the two of them in less than a week was amazing. They are so tiny. They spent most of their time in the kitchen, and I guess they must of munched all the time. Probably explains my dad's blood sugar readings. He ate too much of my White Raisin Cake. When she called to let me know she arrived home, she complimented me on how well I had pulled off the food planning and the Xmas eve and Xmas day meals. I love that woman. She sounded like she was coming down with my cold....
My Dad and I are frying oysters for New Years eve. Traditionally, on Christmas eve, when my grand parents were still alive, we would have oyster stew and fried oysters. (some didn't like the stew) . Fond memories of granny in the kitchen...... Then when they passed, the only ones who still would eat them was my dad and me, so we moved it to New Years Eve and just fry them. We get what they call "Counts" which are really huge. My dad has ordered them, and we will be driving over to East Peoria IL to pick them up on Wed afternoon.....
-
Carole and Red - I saw a man interviewed on TV. He was going in to urgent care, ticked off all the flu symptoms he had except he was not running a fever. I was taught one of the #1 symptoms of flu. But by golly his flu test was positive. This one may act a little differently. I will have the cough/snotty nose for weeks but generally I feel better. Cooked a passable dinner, a Hormel refrig. chicken in sauce that I dressed up with sauteed red bell peppers and chunky green onions and poured over some corkscrew pasta. Oh and a few dribbles of leftover heavy cream. Need a bit more seasoning but that was easily fixed.
Red - sounds like you had a wonderful time with you aunt and continue to have with your dad. Special times.
Susan - enjoy your 3 day "pass". Want to hear that you had some fun times.
I have - Susan don't listen - canned black eyed peas and a Cook's ham steak for New Years Day. I might get up enough umph to make biscuits but don't have any buttermilk. I need to get a can of that stuff but I never use it up. I know I can sour milk to make but nothing like really good buttermilk. My grocery has a good Bulgarian one why I don't know. DH supposed to work 9-5:00 tomorrow means he leaves here about 7:45, same for NY Day. Weather is iffy. Under freezing rain/travel advisory starting at midnight. Sure don't want him stuck an hour away in icy weather. If it's bad in the am he will call in. The tweets I've been getting sound like conditions are getting much worse west/SW. We are right on the eastern edge if, and a big if, they have put the advisory in the right place.
Oh Red, your comment about your cake makes me want to bake that "fruit" cake I found. Sweets have just sounded terrible to me, had only a couple of graham crackers. But that is beginning to sound better. Maybe a couple of more days and I will.

-
Susan, I hope you have a restful getaway. Your meals sound delish to me.
Isn't it amazing that people in different states get the same "crud"? I feel well enough to function now but am still not back to "normal." Normal being a state where I'm not blowing my nose!
Last night's dinner was good and fairly easy and fairly healthy. I put together a yummy salad of romaine, grape tomatoes (red and yellow), cucumber, avocado, brined olives (kalamata and large green, cut into pieces), and feta cheese. Dressing was a sprinkling of champagne vinegar and sprinkling of lime-flavored olive oil. Steamed broccoli with fresh lemon juice and a pat of butter. Blackened catfish filets well seasoned with cayenne, onion and garlic powder and a little salt. I oiled the filets before seasoning them and plopped them into a very hot cast iron skillet. DH made his usual tartar sauce and I squeezed extra lemon on my fish. I should have been Greek with my love of fresh lemon!
Paul Prudhomme advocates putting oil directly on the meat or veggie instead of putting it in the skillet or pan.
This year we're not going out to dinner with friends for New Year's Eve. One couple we enjoyed going out with has moved away and the other couple is out of town. Plus I'm not in the mood for spending a lot of money and eating an elaborate meal. Not sure what dinner will be. But tomorrow's dinner will be corned beef brisket with carrots and potatoes and onions and cabbage, black-eyed peas and brown rice. The black-eyed peas and cabbage are standard fare on New Year's Day.
I do plan to enjoy a glass of wine tonight!
Happy New Year's Eve to all!
-
That dinner sounds wonderful, Carole! I love your cooking descriptions.
Had breakfast (fruit salad and coffee) with one of my good clinician friends this morning (one of the colleagues with whom I really miss working...really enjoyed our time catching up) and stopped at a local Home Goods store that was on my route home. They had lots of "organizing" items featured at the front of the store so I bought several to try to tackle the fabric chaos in my sewing room. Found lots of other little items, too....small impulse purchases. Darn that $10.00 coupon....am sure I earned another one! I do love that store....
We are going to dinner with our next door neighbors at a French restaurant up the street. Then maybecwe'll attend a concert or another event thatbis part of our town "First Night"... Or come home and crash. DH is not back to his healthy normal, and I am dragging a bit.
Hope you all enjoy health and happiness in 2015! Wonderful group here.....:
-
lacey - I am a Home Goods junkie too!
Tonight will be flat bread pizza - one chicken and roasted garlic, one spinach and mushroom, and some tomato basil soup - none of it made by me. It will be heat and eat. My sweet neighbor brought me over some homemade chicken noodle soup this afternoon - it was awesome. I am still not feeling better - different, but not better. Reaching the point where I am considering an urgent care visit. Ugh! DD comes home tomorrow and DS the next night for Christmas II.
-
SpecialK, the urgent care visit sounds like a wise idea. I know several people who did the same and got meds that helped them. Your flatbreads sound good. I did a thorough examination of all the pizza selections in the frozen food cases at Winn Dixie this afternoon. Found several that looked good. Thin crust and non-meat toppings. But didn't buy any. I'm not finding my pizza crust yeast so may have to shop online.
Lacey, the dinner at a local French restaurant with neighbors seems really nice.
Hope everyone enjoys New Year's Eve whether staying home or going out.
-
The food sounds wonderful as usual. The ladies in my neighborhood decided to play dominoes at the last minute so we'll eat a hodge podge. I'm taking vegetable spring rolls from Costco. Hope they're good. Someone else is bringing a RazzleDazzleBerry pie. Another an applesauce raisin cake. Probably some cheese & crackers and maybe a traditional black-eyed-pea dish. (yup Luv, they'll be canned since we just decided to play 2 hours ago) I'm sure I'll be home & in bed before midnight.
Special I agree about a doc visit. Anything that might make you feel better w/all your kiddos home.
Carole - I liked the Prudhomme idea of putting the oil directly on the veggies or meat. Think I'll try that.
Lacey - I don't think we have a Home Goods. Of it we do it's a good thing I don't know where.
Happy new year to everyone.
-
DH just got home. Watching for the ice storm. Heated up the bit of leftovers from last night which was good.
Minus - I hear Austin has cancelled the big NY Eve plans for tonight. Your domino party sounds like great fun. My Sunday School class is having a party but don't think they want Typhoid Mary coming. I'll settle in with the Stars hockey game shortly.
Home Goods - the one in Ft Worth I know of is not great. Not really impressed. More of them towards Dallas way. I think it's just what the store stocks what. Realized my comment sounded very negative.
Special - I'm sorry you're still puny. Maybe urgent care is calling your name.
-
Good evening ladies & Eric. Don't post much these days - read and try to catch up with you all.
Just wanted to wish you all a healthy, happy 2015 !
-
Decided to end the year with a visit to the energy room. CRINGE ALERT: I was grating a large block of gruyere on my microplane box grater when the block of cheese broke in half and my thumb ended up being grated. Took off half of my nail and part of the nail bed. Ick!! It was somewhat shocking and slow to stop bleeding. It's been a while since I've had a tetanus shot, hence the er visit. Now my thumb has a huge bandage on it and is pretty much useless. Fortunately it's the same hand that's having surgery on Friday.
Sk, sure hope you feel better soon. One of the people who passed dh and me our nasty colds has had his turn into pneumonia. This crap is nothing to mess around with. Dh and I are still coughing two weeks later. I finally dragged out the humidifier last night and it really helped.
Hoping the new year is better for all of us!

Oh Aauntie Nance---did they stick your finger in a wire cage that looks like a mini beer can chicken roaster with the gauze on the outside to do that? That's how they bandaged my pinky and the nurse said she wished she'd invented that little sucker.......Just looked at my meds from Promptcare--40 mg of Prednisone at once daily for 5 days and a Z-pak. No wonder I feel good....
Just home from my Oyster adventure with my 87 year old dad. We fry oysters each NY Eve. Drove to East Peoria to pick them up today----forgot to check directions before I left for his house, and he said he knew the exit and he wasWRONG, and me with my Bridge Phobia almost passed out thinking I was going over the river, but then I aborted the first chance and got directions and we were fine. All the way home, he kept telling me he didn't think they gave us "counts" cause they were in a single container and I kept saying, yes, it's what we ordered. Seafood shop was packed---they were calling # 74 when we got there, but b ecause we pre-ordered we could bypass that mess. But I didn't get to shop for anything else, as it was toohard to control dad on his walker in the crowd..... And of course, he had to go in, cause they had out free samples.....
Well, when we got in the kitchen I put him to watching the temp on the oil while I breaded them all up and soon as he saw them, he admitted that they were correct, "if they are all that size" they were. We ordered 24 and he gave us 29. (priced by the lb, but anyway it tickled 87 that there were "extra's". So, he ate his fill, along with 1/2 of an overly large baked potato He drank iced tea and I finished off 1/2 bottle of white wine from the Hill in St. Louis. Then I washed up the dishes, and we ate some French macaroons I got at Sams Club. He is rubbed down with Ben Gay since his back was hurting and is tucked in for the night. He said to me after he got in bed "new years eves are too far apart" and I told him we could do oysters sooner, but it's nice to have special traditions, also.
Happy New Year to everyone.....
-
Happy New Year everyone.
Hi Tazz. Long time no hear. I hope you are doing well
Auntie....OUCH!!!!!! I hate working with cheese for that very reason.
SK, I hope things improve *real quick*--in time for Christmas II. If it takes a trip to urgent care, so be it.....
Susan, you sound like my brother....a vacation for him is doing only 40 hour weeks.
Both dogs are barking at the fireworks and it's driving me nuts. The cat is....bemusedly watching the dogs bark.
It's been a wild New Years eve for me.....1 ale (12 ounces) for me. It tastes good!
I forgot....Sharon and DD are "up north" skiing/snowboarding. I'm babysitting the dogs. Dinner tonight was a roast chicken and twice baked potatoes. I use chives, buttermilk, sour cream, salt and pepper in the filling. No measurements..I just add until it seems right
-
Nancy, I'm alsomglad that hand is the one facing surgery! And morenthan haopy that we got the covered up visual!
Redheaded, mwhat a sweet story..worth every bridge worry, and fish store crowd! I was alsomamused to recall that my fake ID that I used in college was from Peoria.
Our dinner at Petit Bistro Robertwas very nice...not the greatest rack of lamb, but certainly fine. We checked out one of the local concerts after, then headed home and watched TV for ushering in 2015. Was happy that we received a New Year's greeting at "our"midnight from DS2 who is in a different time zone with girlfriend.
Happiness and health tomall....and those of you with this darn virus...please get better soon.
I'm watching DH's condition go a bit deeper, so if it stays in that bronchial direction, I'll be convincing him to head to the doc.
Please excuse all my typos...until I fight the crowds at the tech store, I'll just have to put up with this.....
-
Eric - wow, a real splurge - a whole bottle of ale. I had one wine glass of ChocVine - a wonderful Holland chocolate & red wine delight
Fireworks all around. Nance - your poor thumb. Redhead I love your oyster & father story. Tazzy - nice to see you. Luv - hope you don't get the ice but it's sure cold enough in Houston. You're west of Ft. Worth right?
-
Nance, SUPER CRINGE on your thumb event! I have a mandolin that's part of a combo grating gizmo by Pampered Chef but I've never used the mandolin blade. Your experience doesn't influence me in that direction. Your hands aren't operating at their best with the carpal tunnel and numbness.
Redheaded, I'm in love with your father from your stories about him! He sounds like such a dear. And anybody who likes fried oysters is a friend of mine. One of my favorite splurge lunches out at a local restaurant is an oyster poboy. Not only do we have good oysters here in south Louisiana but we have the perfect French bread loaves for a poboy. Crusty so that your table gets covered with crumbs. Hoagie bread is not the same.
Eric, a whole bottle of ale? That is excessive. LOL. I had two glasses of Franciscan chardonnay. If you're looking for a reasonably priced chardonnay that's very good, try Franciscan. Minus, our neighbors gave us a bottle of the chocolate/red wine you mentioned. It sounds like a weird combination. Glad to know you recommend it. Yesterday I splurged on a bottle of small batch rye that was on sale at the Winn Dixie. Rye is better than bourbon for folks with diabetes because rye is made from wheat. Probably not good for gluten free folks! I'm not diabetic but am pre-diabetic.
I'm looking forward to a lazy day. Healthy 2015 to all of us. My wish is that more of our foodie friends whom we miss will check in and let us know how they're doing.
-
Happy New Year to all!
auntie - ouchie!!! So sorry! Had to laugh at the bandage though!
Feeing oh so slightly better so far today - DD is on her way home - she had to work this morning. DS comes tomorrow night - just talked on the phone with DD and she is discussing which restaurant to take her brother to after his plane lands - girl has her priorities straight! We decided the one with the awesome chips - hand cut potato chips, dusted with cinnamon sugar, and an aioli dip - they are the bomb!
Thank you all for your continuing good wishes - feel like I have maybe turned a corner toward feeling better! The flu every ten years is enough for me and I will never again tempt fate by saying "I never get sick ..." this was a slapdown on that for sure!
tazzy - Hi!!!
redhead - I loved your dad's comment that New Years are too far apart - so cute! He sounds like a handful but glad you have him.
