Red Yeast Rice & Tamoxifen ???

So I went for a "regular" medical check-up and got the results of my cholesterol test. My overall cholesterol was perfect, the LDL (bad stuff) was low and the HDL (good stuff) was very high. All good, right? Well apparently now doctors look at something called C-reactive protein to determine cardiovascular risk and mine was high. The treatment is to take a statin drug like Crestor. I'm not sure about all that business!!! I looked into holistic options and red yeast rice seems to have the same effect. However, I am worried about taking it with Tamoxifen. Both my oncologist and my family doctor are non-committal when questioned about possible interactions.

On a side note ...I'm 41 years old. I am a healthy weight, eat no red meat or pork and exercise regularly. All reasons I think this whole C-reactive protein test is a bunch of crap :)

Isn't CRP an inflammation marker? Wouldn't it be affected by all kinds of issues - cancer, infections, viruses, etc., as well as cardiac issues? I'm not a medical professional but that was my understanding. Maybe someone else will chime in.

As far as red yeast rice, I did as the NP at my BS's office about taking it with Femara. She said it was o.k. with Femara and that there were several large studies that seemed to demonstrate efficacy so I could go on using it. (It was originally suggested by my primary.)

Now, Femara & Tamox. are different drugs with different modes of action so I wouldn't necessarily say that you can apply that info across the board. I would suggest that you talk with your pharmacist and maybe push your MO a bit harder to see if you can get a real answer.

It doesn't sound like you would have a lot of risk factors, high CRP or no!
