Winter rads 2014-2015

Ugghhh - had my simulation today and lost it again just like I did during the scans last week. I just can't handle the breath-holding apparatus and clip on my nose - I feel like I can't breathe. We had to stop and start all over again when I started crying. I made it though, and now that I did, I think I will be ok for my first rad on Monday. I know I am strong after all I've already been through, and I'm not going to let this bring me down! I will look at this as a challenge from here on, and I love a challenge.
Happy Holidays to everyone!

Kleenex and socks - such a creative group! I actually cut up some cotton panties to make a pad for between my breasts. I even wondered about light pads for your period which are designed to wick moisture, but the adhesive seems an obstacle. Often I just tuck my cotton top under my breast.

Cath57, I can only hope the RO is more positive about your wanting to understand your cancer treatment. It is a plus for you. My RO started by saying that nowadays the doctor explains the health problem, gives you options and let's the patient make the decisions. He gave me quite the biology lesson (not my strong suit in school but this was for sure what they call a teachable moment) and made a decision tree using my pathology.
Also two techs prepare me each visit for the zap. I shut my eyes as soon as I hit the table, but not my ears. When I mentioned that they changed a number called out, the tech apologized for leaving me out of the conversation, explained the change, and ever since talks me through any change. All good naturedly. Hope you find a tech like that.

Merry Christmas Everyone!
Today went for my sim and tattoos. A Christmas Eve I will never forget! Will start my rads on January 12th. My RO said 6-1/2 weeks so.....
First week off of Taxol and starting already to feel more like a human being! Still very tired though.
Congratulations to everyone who's finishing or has finished their rads, that is quite an accomplishment. God Bless all of you.
Wishing everyone a Wonderful Healthy New Year!

I am DONE!! Finished my rads!! Cried all the way through the last one. Can't believe this part of the journey is finally done. The techs gave me flowers after I finished. Such wonderful caring people I had. Part of me is still burning, part is peeling, I'm really really tired. Here's to a new beginning!! You all just getting started, you can do it. We are here to support you. To those that finished, congratulations!!!
Merry Christmas to everyone. Hope you all have a wonderful holiday! Very grateful to each and everyone of you!

Hi everyone,
Question? How often did you have blood work during radiation? Did you have films done as part of rads weekly?
The machine got stuck the other morning and tech told me it was because they were doing films, and they do them weekly.
I found out yesterday that my WBC was low. 2.9 which on average starts at 4.0. So after telling them I refuse weekly blood work, they agreed to wait until end of next week to retest. Also not another until last week of treatment. I didn't even have blood work but every three weeks when on chemo. I think weekly blood work on rads is over kill. I'm not a lab rat that they can do unnecessary testing on. Anyway we came to a compromise. RO was very nice and explained films will not anymore exposure to radiation then Regular treatment. I was concerned I was getting more rads then I signed up for. Besides the fact no mention of films before. Tmrw will be 6 of 33. Happy Golidays to all.

Hi Catie - I didn't have any bloodwork done through rads, but I also didn't have chemo, so it is very possible that because of the chemo they are worried about your blood levels.
They did do weekly x-rays throughout rads, though. The reason I was given was to be sure the radiation area was staying lined up with the area they wanted to get. I'm sure it's possible that weight changes, fluid changes, etc could effect how you lay and the exact area of radiation. So they would check to be sure on a weekly basis.
Did you have trouble with your blood counts during chemo?
Sorry you are going through the extra stress with the radiation.
-
catie 57: Weekly due to medical regulations. They must do them to make sure placement is correct.
-
Hi Catie57,
I am confused because your info below your name has radiation therapy 1-8-15. Did you start it earlier than planned?
I did not have lab work due to radiation tx , but like Birdgirl11 did not have chemo, so not sure what is related to what in your situation.
I think you should ask why you are having the blood work. Is it because of the radiation tx or some other reason? Is it the RO that is requesting it or some other doctor?
Every week they have done check x-rays - so I do agree with others that seems to be the norm.
-
Catie57 -
Also, if you do have a low WBC count for any reason, they may want to follow and make sure it does not need to be addressed.
I have a feeling you are having the blood work for some other reason besides the radiation.
Also, they may be checking other things in addition to the WBC count.
Maybe now that you are done with chemo, they need to keep following because of some long term effects, but during the chemo they may have been testing your blood to make sure they could keep giving you the chemo at that time.
I have also found that there are many aspects of the radiation treatment that have not been fully explained ahead of time, but I have found out about as I go through it.
-
Catie, I had weekly x-rays to verify placement. I never had blood work during rads but I didn't have chemo either.
Way to go Hope. What a way to end the year.
-
Catie57, I was incredibly fatigued after my first week of rads so they did blood work to make sure my counts had come back up from chemo. They were good so they didn't check them again. Because yours were low they need to keep track. When they're low you are more are very susceptible to infection. Your skin is breaking down and could blister which also puts you at risk so if your counts are low you could be at risk for sepsis.
-
CONGRATS to you Hope!!!!
I have films done every five treatments, but no blood work. They tell me that films are done for the purpose of keeping things lined up.
-
I had films done every week to check position. No blood work done but I didn't have chemo.
-
I did not have chemo but had blood work done for a base level. Not sure when it will be done again as I have just had 7 sessions. The first three treatments, they did cone beam CT to refine position. Now they will do that twice a week. Maybe any extra exposure is a fair trade-off for avoiding heart, lung, etc.? Without the cone beam, the time on the table goes by quickly.
-
I am almost done with radiation, but will be having a "clean-up" surgery in the future to become completely flat. Does anybody know how long I have to wait after finishing radiation before I can have my last surgery?
-
I did not have x-rays at all. My treatments involved CT scans at the same time as radiation to assure the beams are on track. It's called image guided.
I'm toast tonight. I so wanted to have Christmas dinner here. There were only seven of us, but it took me 3 days to fix the food! We had some friends stop by, and they have five kids. They cook for 7 every day. How?
-
But, Coyote, you did it with one hand tied behind your back .
Tired but proud of yourself.
-
I hope everyone is having a great day after Christmas (for those who celebrate). I've completed 8/19 and so far doing well. I'm on Herceptin again until summer and finding the non-stop runny nose (without nose hairs) to be a drag. That said, I'll take rads and Herceptin over AC any day. I signed up for Livestrong, which starts the week my rads are finished. Anyone else here participated in the program? It sounds wonderful! Enjoy the day! Linda
-
For those that had chemo and have finished rads or near finished, how is your hair doing? Coming back in yet?
-
Thank you all for information. I felt better after speaking with RO about blood work and films.
Hope50 - CONGRATS on finishing radiation, and what a nice Xmas present. So happy for you. We were both on August chemo together, so I know it's been a long journey. Please tell me your hair is starting to grow a little.
Had 6/33 today, quite the newby. It sound like it goes pretty quickly from reading the posts
-
Hope50: I finished chemo (Taxol) 11/12 and then started right into radiation. I have one more radiation treatment to go and am continuing on herceptin. I was getting very depressed because my hair didn't seem to be growing at all other than a couple very fine hairs. To make it worse, i hadn't lost my eyebrows or eyelashes during chemo but then they fell out during radiation. I kept joking with my daughter that all i wanted for Christmas was my hair to grow back. The day before Christmas, I could actually see some hair growth starting. It no longer feels prickly and is starting to get soft. I guess it is my Christmas miracle. I can't wait for the day I don't need the head scarf or wig...
-
Hope - I am right behind you in finishing rads. You started a week before me with chemo in August and two weeks before me for radiation. My last chemo was 10/23/14 and my hair is almost 1/2 inch long already and is very soft and very white. It is a lot whiter than my original salt/pepper (more salt) hair.
-
Linda, What is the Livestrong program you signed up for?
-
I'm on 26 out of 30 rads- only the boosts left! I had images taken everyday to line things up... Skin is ok- red and blotchy and a tiny bit itchy but overall not too bad. I've been using pure aloe and glaxol cream. Continuing to do my stretches and arm exercises has helped too. I go back to work on the 14th and can't wait to be a little bits more normal! For those just starting- you can do this...it goes so much faster than chemo
-
to Gongshow16,
what is pure aloe and glaxol cream product called?
thanks
-
Congratulations everyone who is finishing rads in 2014, for those of us in 2015 good luck.
I've been reading the posts and getting prepared for my start on Jan 7th. I'll have 18 treatments I think. I've decided to not work during treatment, I did work through most of chemo and was exhausted. Luckily I can take short term disability. I'll stock up on creams before my treatments.
My acupuncturist recommended coconut oil to plump up my skin before rads (not the day of). So I'm going to try that for the next two weeks.
Happy New Year to all you wonderful women
