Way to go Hockeycat and Natsfan!

Just wondering how everyone is doing with winter running? Hope your runs are nice and ice free.

I just got back home from a 28k run which I was worried about because my girlfriend and I wussed out last week at 12k because it was so cold. Ok truth be told, we made the mistake of stopping at Starbucks for a pee break, then headed outside again and decided that coffee was a better idea! Although there were a few Starbucks along today's route we stopped at city facilities so we would not be tempted. It was nice and mild this morning so it was great. We kept a pace that keeps the Disney pick up bus off our tails and that we felt we could keep going for the rest of the race. I'll be honest, I'm getting really exited about Disney!

I was going to run outside today (and it was +2C here today) but I wimped out and did the dreadmill at the Y so that I could also watch some football. I was in Florida all last week (didn't bother to go over to the World; stayed around the Other Place). I planned to run there, but it was colder there than I wanted (like 4C by the time I had free time in the evening), and dark, so I just didn't. I walked from the park to my hotel a few times (maybe a 15-20 minute walk one way) and did it quite briskly, so I racked up steps but I'm not up to the training I wanted to be at. I have my eye on a warmer running coat for winter and maybe some warmer pants. I need a new set of smartwool skin-layer too. I really do prefer to go outside. I won't ever do 28km on a long run, but I'd like to do 14km before the race weekend, and at this rate, I'd be happy with 10. I still have a few weeks.

I have my Disney waiver all downloaded and ready to go, though. I have my air ticket booked going down (not coming back yet) and hotel stuff arrived last week. I am ready in every way except for the training part!

Goldlining & Oncearunner, awesome cold weather running. In Australia, I'm battling the summer heat!

I usually training in the early morning before it heats up but today I have to train after work as I had to take my brother for surgery. I hope it has cooled off before I get home! On a positive note, I haven't had a repeat of my poor run from a couple of weekends ago

Enjoying all your posts. Haven't had too much to share. Taking a few days off because of awful back spasms which started on Friday - lifted too heavy at the gym I think. But I've been out walking the past couple of days and actually kind of enjoying the slower pace. Still early in the morning when it's dark but the Christmas lights are all on and the sky is clear and it looks so pretty. Worked out pretty good because my running partner was sick with vertigo so we were both kind of falling apart. I joke that it's God's way of teaching us humility and tolerance because we think we're so invincible because we're runners.

    Enjoy your runs, everyone.

I had a great appointment at physio today, adjusting the actual positioning of my left leg in the hip socket. I can feel the difference already. We've been working on my DIEP-damaged ab / core strength and the glutes for a while, but I cannot really seem to engage the glutes. They just dangle in the breeze while my hips and ankles do all the running. Just as a throwaway, I mentioned that next time, I'd like to look at my left heel that feels like early signs of plantar fasciitis, and we both noticed that it was the same side as the wonky hip, and had started about the same time as the hip. She said the heel activates the glutes, and if I'm not putting the heel down to avoid the pain on the heel on that side, I will be unbalanced in the glute department, which could make my hip do what it's doing. So I am feeling on the up and up that maybe Jan 10 will be survivable again after all. Was so pleased, I went out and bought some new winter running tights (Nike Shield) and the dri-fit wool hoodie that matches the aeroloft jacket I got for my birthday. :)

I am cleared to run starting next week - had my chemo port placed and my first chemo treatment last Wednesday.  Can anyone tell me if you had issues running with your port?  I've been walking this week and it hurts some when I do - was wondering if I need to wrap it or use extra compression?  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated - glad to find other runners on here!

Welcome to the thread Ckscpa! I ran with my port for about 18 months with no issues. I had it taken out about a month ago. It was a little tender when I first had it put it but once it healed I had no issues. I found it took about two weeks after I had my port put in before it stopped aching when I did major activity.

Goldlining - happy belated birthday! Thanks for posting about the waivers (you too panthrah!) I got ours downloaded after seeing your posts. I haven't been getting any emails from Disney about the race, have you been getting any? I'm also happy to hear that physio is going well. Can't wait until January 7th!

Panthrah - have you seen the Star Wars Dooney and Bourke purses? I saw them on Run Disney's Facebook page the other day and kinda wished I was doing the Star Wars runs instead! Then again I'm a sucker for a nice hand bag.Yep I bought the WDW Marathon Weekend one that I'll be picking up at the race expo! Disney really just needs to shut up and take my money :)

LuvLuLu - I hope your back is feeling better or well on its way to behaving!

Tammy_M43 - please tell us more about your summer running. I could use reminders of how warm it will get again :) it's not a terrible winter so far where I am but there have been some snowy cold days. We'll send you cooling thoughts with the talk of our snow and cold in return!

Tomorrow, my running buddy and I are doing a Disney prep run, where we will leave my house so freaking early to meet friend for coffee. We want to make sure we get our distance in and if we want to make it in time for coffee we have to leave at an ungodly hour. I don't even know what time we have to leave by because I haven't figured it out yet, part of me just does not want to know!

Thank you, oncearunner, back is feeling better, just down to a dull ache, not the awful spasms. I did get back running on Thursday and will go out again tomorrow. The hardest part is first thing in the morning (which is also when I run), getting up out of bed and feeling all tight. I will think of you when I'm complaining about the cold New England winters and running outside - but once you're thru, as I'm sure you know, you feel so good for having been out there in the fresh air. Boston weather has been pretty mild so far. Keeping my fingers crossed!

BTW, you must be a crazy person! The Dopey Challenge, really?? Maybe someday . . . or not.

I just read a very inspiring book for all of us older runners out there - or those who plan to be someday! It's by Margaret Webb and it's called "Older, Faster, Stronger - What Women Runners Can Teach Us All About Living Younger" - check it out.

Signed up for the Run to Remember Half Marathon, Boston on May 24. My son will do it as well. Memorial Day weekend - summer kickoff!

Enjoy the weekend, all . . . gotta go clean my house

Oncearunner- yes yes yes I saw and got the D&B SW purse!!! I past up the Haunted Mansion bag, I past up the Avengers one all in hopes that they would make a SW one that I liked.. and They did so I did.. I got it :):) I also like it cause it look a little like villains from far away hehe I bounced around the house singing "merry christmas to meeeeeee" I printed the waivers ( they do have a printer there if you forgot to bring or print it) but I also always print my hotel rez instead of trying to search thru lots of emails because the last time (avengers) they didnt have me in the system! I had booked 3 events and for some reason it made the same rez number for all my bookings. Husband looked at me and said "good thing you printed that" so now he doesnt tease me about it :p Kudos to you for Dopey

To everyone else: Hope everyone is doing well, staying warm, getting cuddles (either by people or furry babies or both) and getting thru the holiday season successfully still smiling :)

Here to get some sympathy - I spent all day (7 hours straight, darned long-lasting Macbook Air battery) sitting in McDonalds writing a course outline for one of my winter classes, so it was starting to get dark by the time I "deserved" my running time. I wimped out from my intended outdoor run, and 32 minutes in on the dreadmill I caught my foot on the edge and ended up landing on my ribs, twice, first on the belt as it dragged my knees out from under me, and then on the floor after it ejected me in my entirety off the end of the belt. Abraded the knees and one elbow but it's the ribs that really hurt and it knocked the wind out of me for a while. The lady on the stair master called for help and the gym matron brought me ice for the visible scuffing on the knees but I really needed it for the ribs, which still hurt. I took some Robaxacet and some candy to dull the pain for now and fortunately I have physio in the morning, so hoping this is just some short-term whining! Note to self: clip that stupid string for the belt-stop on to my clothes next time.

goldlining - ouch, that sounds painful. Sympathy and healing thoughts coming your way. Don't forget, chocolate helps with a multitude of things :)

Got 30k done this morning and it was chilly. I should have worn thicker mittens or doubled up. My hands got so cold that I lost dexterity in my hands after about 17k and it took a little while after the run for it to come back. My right hand, the one with the sleeve and glove, was worst. I need to call my fitter and figure out the compression issue. That hand gets colder much faster. Time for bed for me.

Goldlining- OH NOOES!. try a light light ace bandage wrap on the ribs for some support.. get those checked cause even if you bruised them itll take some time before they feel better. :( I love the candy to dull the pain approach.. I will eat Hershey Kisses in your honor

Gold - oh my - how are you doing today? Hope you get it checked out if it still hurts - cracked/broken ribs can be a bear.

I've always eyed that safety clip thing and never worn it - I think I will after this.

Had a sea salt caramel . . . always glad to do what I can to help.

The physio checked that I had not dislocated anything and she taped up the ribs and said I can tape it more if I want to. She left some space at the front, but could have overlapped it. She also worked on the shin on the "bad" side where the heel and hip are both misbehaving. And then I left and walked 14,000 steps to do some shopping with my daughter. Had a bunch more chocolate this evening (on tap: dark chocolate covered fruit jelly balls). I'm sitting here watching the football players take fall after fall that is worse than my spill, and I feel so wimpy, but it was not habit forming. I saw all the runners outside today and was thinking, "I should have run outside yesterday, stupid me". Wishing I felt up to a short run in the mild temps forecast for Weds here. Supposed to be 11C!

    Take care everyone!

It is already Christmas night in Australia and I'm planning a 7K run tomorrow to burn off all the Christmas goodies.

    Enjoy and stay safe

Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates. I'm still nursing the stupid ribs and trying to decide if I can run. Just 2 weeks to the WDW Half so I'd sure like to be training. I suspect the two weeks will rush by, and the run itself will crawl...

Santa brought me a Nike Flash jacket (the retro-reflective one) and I'm looking forward to going out there and shining at people :)

Definitely have some goodies to burn off, myself!

Can anyone give me some advice as to whether or not I can run with an "extender?"  I am having MX on left side and plastic surgery w/ an extender put in on Jan 27th.  The P.Surgeon said I have to give up Running for the year...!!  Thoughts?

Welcome KjAgent to the happiest thread on BCO. I did DIEP, not implants, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to report on experience with expanders. You can look at the 2013 and 2012 Running threads etc and I'm sure you'll find stories that are relevant.

The most common answer here is, as long as you give up all expectation of speed, and you listen closely to your body, you can be active while you're going through most things. There's "running" and there's "running". We're happy to be able to "run", instead of sad about 13 minute miles. Sometimes the surgeons will have specific reasons why you don't want to jiggle and mess up their work, but if you get more than a 6-8 week timeframe, you might want another opinion or more details about the reasoning. Is it technical, or is it that they are trying to coddle you? I asked my PS if I was crazy to do a half marathon 6 weeks post DIEP and he said, sure, because my time would suck, because I wouldn't be able to train, but he was fine with me doing it. I could only walk stooped over during that 6 weeks, and the half marathon weekend was literally my first run since the surgery, but if I did not have that run scheduled, I probably would have spent the 6 weeks in bed instead of getting up and walking on the treadmill. Having a surgeon that was a runner gave me reassurance that he understood what I was asking and why.

welcome kjagent. Docs have different reasons for recommending what they do so you will have to ask very specific questions about what you can and can't do and why. If your doc doesn't exercise then you might get different answers than you would from one who does. My doc and I decided that there should be minimal walking until the drains came out. After that walking was ok. He said to wait a month before running. I waited about two weeks then got a very supportive bra and started to alternate running and walking. At a very easy pace. At first some of the fast walkers were going faster than my "run". It also depends on what other treatment you may need. Radiation and chemo will make it harder. Trust your doc, yourself and most important listen to your body.

Welcome KjAgent, while I can't provide any advice about running through the reconstruction process (I had a lumpectomy) I will second what goldlining and marie11 have said, ask why those recommendations are being made. Everyone is different and therefore will get different recommendation. Also the biggest thing though out treatment is to listen to your body. Goldlining said it best in her post.

Goldlining - how are your ribs doing? I hope you have been able to get in a couple of training runs for Disney. I'll admit, I'm pretty excited about the races :D

Since it is December 31 and 2014 is coming to a close, I would like to thank lovestorun for moderating the running thread this year. Collectively we have completed 63 races so far this year, I have a race tonight, and lovestorun updated the main post for all of those races.

That leads me to the 2015 Running Thread. I don't mind moderating it unless anyone else absolutely wants to do it. I'll do like lovestorun did this year and update the main post once a week or so with all of our races. If there are no objections, I'll create the new thread on Friday or Saturday.

    Happy new year everyone!

Thank you, oncearunner!  Much appreciated.  When you get to it, you can put me down for Boston's Run to Remember Half Marathon on May 24th.

Lovestorun, thank YOU for keeping us all up-to-date in 2014.

Goldlining, hope you are doing well and looking forward to Disney.

KJAgent, Welcome! You'll find lots of good advice and inspiration here.

To everybody, Happy New Year.  May we all stay healthy and strong in 2015!
