PattyPeppermint - hopefully Sass will be along soon to 'splain. I know several ladies here have done battle with sepsis over the years. Praying that it heals quickly for you..... xoxo

    ~ ~ ~

I don't even know why I post in Insomniacs any more. Most nights I turn the light out around midnight, and sleep til noon the next day. I wake up exhausted. I THINK I'm getting a full night's sleep, but maybe I'm not.

Hence the O2 test the Pulmonologist is planning.

Other than that, life is good. More rain today and a few days this week - we desperately need it!

It was wonderful driving home from the Acupuncturist, seeing all the snow in the mountains.

Wait - that sounds familiar. Did I already write that? NO MEMORY!!!!!

PattyPepper..... That SUCKS ! I do not know much about it, except, try not to go there. No wonder you have been weak & tired. I am sending positive wishes, and healing thoughts. Please break out soon.....

Blondie, so sorry you are still battling the curse of shingles. I have not had the shot, supposed to wait until next June. Hope you feel better soon.

2nd, great owl pic....are you shaking the "bug"?....

Sas, love that last piece of glass...very pretty. I bought a crystal bell, a few weeks ago. I am not into bells, but I thought it was worth $3.00 to try to track it down & figure out who made it...

Chevy, love the new car, your thoughts on hauling beer or coke are a little weird. Cars are made to haul stuff. Not all of us can shop in the alley for various contraband. None of us forgotten your sweet find last spring. Then you picked up a little green house......hmmm.....looks like you will be in buisness in no time. Your dancing days might be fading, but you can make a nice little profit in Denver's dirty little secret. Well, no longer a secret, but still back alley.

Cami, hope you are not too floppy....

    Where's Dutchie? check in PLEASE.....

Sas, how is Phyliss, kicking ass somewhere....?

Patty, on kindle localizedinfection is in one spot. Area may be red, warm swollen, itch ....like a bug bite. There is an activation of the immune system, but on a small scale.

When local bacteria move into the bloodstream and circulates .the brain sets off the alarm system by developing a temperature. The WBC' s different types go to work big time to kill off the circulating intruders.

Literally a war starts. The strength of our defences goes up against a rapidly increasing enemy.

Our immune system is our defender. Our WBC' s are our knights.

If our warriors have been weakened, the battles can be tough. The outside force that can strengthen our defences our the antibiotics to kill the intruding bacteria.

Our resources can be helped by making sure the whole body, every soldier cell has enough fluid to go on. Enough food to go on. Enough sleep to replenish our strength so we can fight the next wave of the war.

We use drugs to control the temperature if it gets to high. Those same drugs can help control the discomfort the whole body is feeling during this war.

Sepsis means infection. The way the term is used is

1.Localized sepsis.......more generally these last few decades we say localized infection.

2.Systemic sepsis, or sepsis ( with the systemic being implied) meaning that there is a higher activation of the immune system.

One of the test to see if the bacteria has intruded into the circulatory system is blood cultures.

Certain bacterial as we all know have become very hard to treat. But not every illness that goes systemic is caused by these bad bacteria. But they will do a test that will identify any of them when you are ill,.based on presentation(how sick you appear), S/S's, temp, history of present illness__ the who, what, when, where, why, etc. ANd the history of your pertinent past medical history. For all of use BC is a pertinent factor. Also, our present condition & over all health.

Once cultures are done. A broad spectrum antibiotic will be started. Certain bacteria are known to invade specific areas. We know that certain antibiotics are useful in battling a particular type of invader in a particular body area. That's why an antibiotic is started as soon as the cultures done.

The sensitivity will be back in 72 hours. The reason this concept is important is at that point you may see a change in antibiotics. That's because the sensitivity test showed the bacteria to be resistant. It's not that the doc didn't do it right. It's b/c the bacteria was resistant.

It also explains why in the early phase of sepsis several antibiotics may be started. Basically trying to cover all bases. Aerobic, anaerobic, gram positive, gram negative. Hey it's a chess game.

The bacteria you are doing battle with right now are fearsome. The are trying to win the battle for each organ. I'm sure your docs have you on what are called the Big Gun Antibiotics.

The comparison to battles and wars is true. Think Big Gun antibiotic. Gonna shoot those buggers.

They will check your blood work daily. WBC__tells how the warriors are doing and if recruits are getting ready. There's more , but the auto correct is acting like the cia, messing with the info.

Comprehensive metabolic profile will tell about how your kidneys are handling their battle, liver function tests will show if the bacteria messing with the liver, finally the remainder of the electrolytes will tell how hydrated you are.

They put the CBC together with the CMET/CMP...temp vital signs. They can really tell how the war is going. AND send in the cavalry when it's needed

    Did I this help?

Blondie, did you have the shingles vaccine? I was gravely ill from chicken pocks about 48 years ago. I was out of school over one month. I still remember how awful I felt. I was so afriad of shingles that I got the vaccine this year at age 56. I was told I could still get shingles but it won't be as bad. I have heard stories about how painful it can be. I hope you feel better soon. I wonder if benadryl helps at all.

Blondie - no they def did not let me out. Still laying in this hospital bed. I hope your shingles heal soon. How long does the shingles usually last. I have never even heard of a vaccine for it. Anyway hope you are better soon.

    Hio - thanks

Blessings - thanks. What not post on this thread anymore just because your sleep schedule changed? No way. We love ya! Don't leave !

SAS - you are the BEST ! I knew I could count on you. Wish I could give you a big ole hug about now. So yes it is in the blood stream and they do have me on two big gun antibiotics every 6 hours via iv and plenty of fluids. Er dr said Yes my organs were beginning to shut down.

I am actually feeling a lot better. Dr laughingly said it is false liquid courage, get back in bed. Well I thought liquor was false liquid courage. Right Chevy and cami? Hmm dr talk I guess. I actually got to sleep around 11 pm I think. I thought I was going to sleep thru my usual 2-3 am wake up - can't get back to sleep thing. But no rest at the hospital as we all know. Blood test every 4 hours, after 5 bags of fluid I finally can pee now but up going a lot, and the nurse woke me at 2 am to give me a pain pill. Seriously ! I am asleep. Obviously not in pain. Nurse explained the pharmacys computer has it that way based on when I came in yesterday. What happened to common sense over computer prompts ? Oh. Well not the nurses fault. He's just doing his job. But now I am wide awake of course.

I'll take all the prayers and good thoughts I can get. I so want to be home. Friday is the last day of school for my ds's and they need me home. It's Christmas ! Damn cancer ! We got our tree up like over a week ago but since both ds's were sick last week we have yet to put lights on or decorate it. Now dh says dss want to wait Til I get home. We always video it and then watch them later. It's so important I want to be in the video but I also don't want them all at home looking at the pitiful tree. I should've decorated with wrapped presents under it by now. Thankfully dh already has bought all the presents except his of course. Cancer and all it's complications be damned this will NOT be my last Christmas with them !

Ok sorry for the pitty party. This too will pass (sooner rather than later I hope).

    Hootie hoo

Good Morning Ladies--of course I didn't ketchup yet, bt here I am.

Patty-Sepsis-WTF Oh I'm s sorry, my brother has been in the hospital or 2 weeks now with it. I guess when they figure the culture then the exact anti-B's can be used better--Oh Sas know all about it, I still dn't understand this damn disease, but u must feel awful, I hope u'r home and comfortable soon and 'd better take it easy. Sas can ezplain everything, even tho I don't have a clue, I do know it can be painful and justdrives u'r body crazy. Just let everyone take care of u, and take that pain stuff whenever they give it so they can keep up with pain. Oh u poor thing.

Blondie I've heard Shingles last as long as they want to and I hope u'r stops like now, u don't need this chit, and u've had enough o everything. (((HUGS))) Blondie

Spookie I love the pic o Spookie with the bow, so cute.

And Chevy yes my car was over 22 yrs old with the original mileage on it--I worked across the street and every place I needed to go was within a mile of my house, my dad gave it to me when it was about 5 yrs old with almost 20,000 miles and I had it for 17 yrs, always getting a new muffler and every so often my SIL would take it out or a good ride. It was starting to rust so I put those gret big magnetic band aides on those places to show I cared. I was garage kept so it helped somewhat. So when I losr my car (due to teenage vandalism) my night business dropped a lot (if u kniw what I mean) oh yea there was still street lights, but to close to home. I really didn't want to be recognized in my line of work--I used no pole like your pole but there was a pole involved, well no extra money now just my 900 number. BTW R U sure it is As--I can't spell it- that u have and not that new flu thing that's going around. Just take care of u'rself and the meds are to old missy, u can't take something that is as old as u they also expire u know.

My party was great but didn't get to sleep til like 4am---so for 2 days I barely could work, my brain was knocked out, I could barely understand the customers--I was talking to a lady and I couldn't understand anything (she had no accent) so I had to ask her to spell her first name, she was kind enough to and she said ANN--I think I need help with my hearing- or way to tired--I can't party like I did many years ago, hmmm I guess I forgot.

I'm sorry I didn't get to everyone I just hope and pray all is going OK.---I still have a little shopping left and my DD is busy like crazy and so far she;s doing great, much harder than she though tho--this last test was all medical names and signs of all skin disease and rashes and she did get 100% but she really studies a lot, but she'll finish what I need, she knows more about what I need than anyone anyway. This week will ly by I know and then we start making things for Christmas Eve (we're havng it here) then Christmas all I have to do is fry peppers for that day and Joey totally does it I just cut them up and he does the seasoning and takes it from there. I'm so glad he likes to do kitchen work --OK I'm rambling

Talk to u gals later xxxoooxxx

Ah geez...I get up and little Peppermint has gone and got in the HOSPITAL! There are just too many of of sick around here.... Pep, I'm so sorry! When I first read your post, and thought it was a call for help from SASS, and I was just reading and crossing my fingers that she heard you!

GOOD JOB SASS! Even I understood this one... I'm going to print it, and keep it with my medical stuff about Infections and Whatever Else the Hell it is!

That was a good analogy about the "war" our bodies fight, when we are invaded... !

Cammi, did you get that? Even EYE understood that one... Wish we were all there to help you Pep...! Just rest.... eat good, and I'm sure they are giving you IV's of little fighter men replacing the tired ones waging that battle in your innards! Good God Gertie! I thought EYE was sick! Not near as bad as YOU kid!

My asthma is a lot better... See, sometimes I am really sick, but I tell everyone I feel fine, and I feel like chit.... But I soldier through, take my meds, cough into my pillow, use my Nebulizer, and last night I took 2 more Nyquil, and I even SLEPT! Now my wheezing is a little better... took about a WEEK! But Thank God I am better...... Now we work on Peppermint. And the SHINGLES!!!!!!!!! Ah geez... YES, I got a shingles shot about 4 years ago...!

Cammi... We have street lights and alley lights! That's where most of my business comes from.... Ha, ha! And you can't spell AZZZMAAAH? No problem... we know what you mean. Just WHEEZE, then you hear what Asthma is.... I still can't believe you wrote a normal post! And poor "Anne".... Cammi, you can borrow my hearing aids if that would help... Or I'll make you some... All you need is 2 ..empty... green-bean cans, string, and poke holes in the bottoms, and connect with string... it works best if the other person is near you...... guess you could even use Spam cans......

It's like the alley is my thrift shop.... Ha! I see stuff there, that shouldn't BE there, so I remove it. I forgot about the "green-house!" It's in the back of our garage, just w-a-i-t-i-n-g for Spring! I think people drive up our alleys, and deposit their "stuff" by our huge city dumpsters... because if you live out of the city, you have to PAY for trash removal! I have signs all over the area... "please leave your "stuff" over in our alley on Raleigh st.." Ha, ha! Just kidding!!!!!!!

HiHo! NO! My car can't haul "stuff"....! I mean 8 cases of no damn beer! Not even 2 Cheetos! I will haul a "little" beer, but if those boys want THAT much beer, then THEY can go get it... damnit!

And so what is wrong with Spookers? Fingers broke? Sleeping? Out posting pictures of your 75 degree weather?

#1 says they will hide it like Easter and we have to find it

So sorry for Patty and Blondie!!  It sucks to be sick anytime, but dang it being sick during Christmas just makes it worse, or at least for me!!  I will say extra prayers that you two get better quick!  And you too Chevy!!

I'm still busy being mom and grandma, I'm the chief cook, bottle washer, cleaner, chauffeur and baby sitter (love that part)!!  The other is just all part of it!  But I'll take it!  Started with a little sniffle and throat junk, so I'm going to jump on the meds, got to try to stay ahead of it, can't be sick with new babies around!!

I torture myself and look at homes in Florida on trulia... sigh. Your money goes further there. Obviously it depends where, but generally. Alas we have good jobs here and are all established. sigh.. It's cold, it's grey and rain is on the way. I keep telling myself bloom where you are planted dang it! Requires sun and there is MOSS on all the side walks.. what does that tell you??? Next life time. Ya know it is a stinkin jip that everyone seems to get hot flashes and I don't. I am ALWAYS COLD. I could use a hot flash in Oregon. Got the space heater on it says 70 degrees and my fingers are icy! They said my thyroid level is fine and I am fat - no good insulation. WTH???

Poor Southern California is looking wetter then Oregon! They will have to change their mascots (ours are the ducks and beavers) so they can have the fighting salamanders, egrets and turtles! WhooHoo!

Patty and Blondie -hope you guys are doing better! Patty you can sing "all I want for Xmas is discharge papers.. fa la la la la!"

Spookiesmom- pretty funny what your grand kids said.

Chevy staying warm? Glad I am not the only one who can't always follow the posts! hi to everyone I missed.

yeh me! Drains came out today. Was a little nervous cause don't know if it's going to hurt this time. Nope, was fine. Had the cutest resident do it. He was also in the OR. I can tell I'm getting older when the docs look like kids not old enough to be out of high school. He was 31. Still have to be good for a couple more weeks.

Patty, hope you get home soon. Blondie, hope it gets better soon. Everyone else, be good. (For Chevy and Cami).

Sweet Patty, hope you're feeling better and get to go home tomorrow!

Blessings and Blondie, hope you're feeling better soon, too

Gosh Florida does sound good at least S. FL. I lived for about 6 months in Ft Walton Beach and it sure can get cold there. Supposed to rain with only 45 degree temp tomorrow. Then reasonably OK Thurs, then another pour down Fri. I have to get my car inspected. Does anyone go to the place where you have to drive over the pit? This is the "Lube Center". I think a chain. That terrifies me, I've done it b4 but don't like it one bit. I refuse to take DH's trucks there but this is my car. I might just bite the bullet time wise that is and go to Goodyear. Drive in, read a mag, drive out. Takes longer but my nerves might be better off. Have plenty of mags to read.

MMM Teka the hot apple cider toddy sounds delicious. What is the "toddy" part? I'm having my 2nd cup of hot cocoa. I love Stephens Candy Cane cocoa. Hunks of peppermint candy. I bet Teka can get some good apple cider. Most of the stuff we have is watered down.

Patty - I hope you get discharged soon but mostly want you better so you can enjoy the holiday.

Blessings, Chevy and Blondie - We need some healing around here and we need it now.

Yay Smaarty. Bet that does feel good to get drains out. Continued healing thoughts for you.

2ndtime around- a mini rant on why extra weight doesn't keep ya warm! Not fair all that insulation is useless, should be good for something.

Luvmygoats- just drive in over the big pit and read. It is a bit un nerving. At Oil Can Henry's they give a complimentary paper while you get your oil changed, maybe so you don't look down. If you are on the West Coast, Cascade Tires can't be beat! They are fast and cheaper than anyone out there; 20$ for my Caravan!! No pit at our Cascade Tires.

Smaarty - after my second mastectomy I took out my own drain. Ha.. that raised eyebrows at the urgent care I went to because I couldn't quite reach the last stitch to get it out! I couldn't twist far enough, so they took the last one out. I had the second right side out in Sacto instead of where I live. I used to live there and knew the hospital and things went so well. No issues. Still I wasn't about to fly back for a drain! My DH gags with stitches.. ridiculous - he's no help. Here's to healing up and having a nice cosmetic outcome! It's scary when the residence don't look like they should be out of high school.

Hi Blondie- you up? I didn't get any sleep last night. I took a unisom and zip zero, it got me just a dry mouth. I tossed and turned and looked at the clock every hour for 6 hours and gave up. Here it is 5:30 am and I am on my second cup of coffee reading the NY Times. The carnage in Pakistan leaves me saddened. What kind of a mind set could ever justify killing 135 school children? The Muslim people over there need to turn against these cowards and killers of innocent children and throw them in jail forever. When the locals have had enough tides will turn. Right now there is sympathy towards their cause, utter insanity.
