Gold - I think you did a fabulous job, especially with your hip screaming at you the entire way! All that and still an under-3 hour half??? Sounds like you finished that race on sheer grit and determination - something to be very proud of. Glad you got it checked out and that core strength seems to be a big culprit. Before my DIEP, my PS sent me to a couple of sessions of PT at the hospital so they could give me a core strengthening program. I did that for the couple of months prior to my DIEP, and it really helped my recovery. I've continued to do many of those exercises ever since, so I know all about those ball pull things!
Trails - it's so good that you're listening to your body. We all want to get out there ASAP, but this is one time when pressing through the pain is NOT a good idea. Smart girl to back off for a while!
Once - you may want to check the fit on your gauntlet. I've had the thumb-falling-asleep thing before, but it's usually when I have a new gauntlet. You're probably swelling a bit when running such long distances - maybe talk to your LE therapist about your gauntlet size.
Hockey - I was so fatigued after chemo that a walk to the corner and back was a major victory! It takes time, but the fatigue really does get better.
They posted the 10K pix on line - here I am - I may not be speedy but I'm determined!
-
GREAT pic, Nats. You look so tough - in a GOOD way!!!
-
Trails - I am no longer taking tamoxifen, I guess I should figure out how to indicate that in my signature block! I tried taking the full dose for about two and a half months and my main side effects were hot flashes at night where I would wake up 4-5 times a night and some anxiety and loss of appetite with weight loss. So my MO advised me to take a half dose since apparently that is still more than enough but may have less side effects. I tried that for about two months and my hot flashes pretty much went away but the anxiety and lack of appetitestayed and I started experiencing heart palpitations along with a weird symptom that only happened when I ran. I would go out for a run and get to a point where it felt like my heart just could not keep up. The worst was that I was running slower than I was before tamoxifen but feeling worst. Imagine your hardest speed session and take that feeling up a few notches. Given all of that, my MO had me come off tamoxifen to see if the side effects would go away. They did.
I've been completely off since about the middle of August but due to my age, I'm 32, my MO wants to be aggressive with treatment. I want to be aggressive too but I have to think of my quality of life. What we have agreed on right now is that I will try Zoladex injections to shut down my ovaries. The plan is to see how I tolerate that and go from there. I have my first injection next week. My advice would be to give the tamoxifen a try, there are some ladies who have very little side effects, you might be one of them. Don't let my experience deter you from trying but I did want to share how I reacted to it, everyone is different. You can always try and stop taking it if the side effects are too much for you and work on plan B with your MO.
Natsfan - thanks for the heads up, I'll see if it happens again next time I run and if it's does the same, I'll call my fitter. Great picture by the way.
-
Nats, love that photo!!!
-
Nats- LOVE the pic
:)
Goldlining- Good luck to you at Avengers
may the magic powers of the mouse be with you while you SMASH the HALF!! Ill be looking for an another ASL sign from your mouse crew

NatsFan, Great pic!
I was able to go for walk (30mins to 1hr) for three days in a row, then another setback. Got rash from Taxotere again...
I had to cancel my spa appointment and started taking steroids for 6 days. Hope it'll go away soon, so that I can start running.

Hi everyone!
I Havnt posted on a running thread in ages! Maybe 2012?! I still recognise some runners here though, goldlining!
My story in a nutshell: I was diagnosed with stage 2a IDC in 2009 (aged 29) while training for my first marathon & had chemo, lumpectomy & rads. I postponed the marathon that year but since completing treatment I've run 7 full marathons, countless half marathons & 10kms!
I gave birth to a fab little baby girl 6 months ago & am starting to get serious about running again, just need to find the time!!!! I signed up to do a 10km on dec 26th which is giving me something to train for again. I feel so de-conditioned!!
I look forward to following this thread & reading your lovely posts! It was always one of my favourite threads!!
Xx

I took a longer than expected break from the discussion board but I had to come back and check out my favorite thread and update you all on my races:)
First, I have tried to catch up but there has been a lot of running going on! Congratulations to everyone who has gotten some miles in and on the road to recovery!
It is hard to believe that in December it will be a year from my BMX surgery. I remember feeling like so much was taken away from me and for some reasoning not being able to run was one of the hardest things to deal. with. I am very happy to report that I feel like I am fully back and my times are pretty close to where they were before and I'm able to do my push-ups again and just about anything else though I will admit I haven't really tested the weights yet mostly using my own body weight in workouts.
My 1.2 mile swim for the Patriot Half Ironman Relay went well considering that I really didn't log the training hours I should have and even beat my previous time by a minute.
Goldlining- You were in my thoughts during the Wine and Dine. What was up with all that rain! I have officially named that race my #disneyswim. It was a great experience though and I would do it again and yes, I was in Epcot Friday night but still partied until 4am on Saturday through Sunday (serious sleep deprivation) I thought my time was better than it actually was- 2:06:03, I'm blaming my soaked shoes and the late hour, I'm a morning runner. I also was able to get my first scuba dive in since surgery in Epcot at the Disney Divequest on Friday. For any scuba divers out there, I would highly recommend the experience.
I did the Richmond Half Marathon today and while I don't think I was fully recovered from Disney yet, I met my goal of sub 2hrs, with 1:58:11!
Lovestorun-you were in my thoughts today, hope you had a great race! It was a freezing start but at least no rain:)
Please add me to the 2015 Love the Rox Half- 2/22/15 and the Shamrock Half 3/22/15- My next goal is to try for a 1:52 time!!!
Thank you all for the support! I can't express enough how crucial this thread was to me when I wasn't sure I would be able to run again, was scared to try, and through my baby steps of getting back out there. You all inspire me:)
-
that is a great picture, Mary!
-
Welcome back TreadSoftly! Hope motherhood is treating you well. You'll get the running thing back. Hope that rash has resolved HockeCat.
Aloha - that's wonderful news! So glad you are feeling back to your old self and and that had a great run on Saturday. Sub-2 -woohoo!!! I thought about you too, and the others on this board.... I had a wonderful run, though my hips never warmed up the entire time. I was reminded earlier in the week on what a gift it is to be able to do this running thing and to toe the start line. I thought about that ALOT during miles 1 - 9. (Would love to say I channeled that gratitude the whole way, but 9 - 11 were challenging. 11 was "just get to 12" and the last mile was all downhill literally and figuratively) Beat my goal time by 60 sec., which felt really good and re-energized me. Maybe 2015 will bring a new PR!On an unrelated note, anyone want to moderate the 2015 list? I will be bowing out of that role. PM me if you are interested or have questions. Or post here!

I did 4.14 miles today took me an hour to do it. I haven't hit that mileage since December of 2013. I was going 8 miles in 1 hour 20 minutes. I have a 5K this weekend and signed up for my first half marathon in March in Moab, Utah. I'm worried because they have cut off times, before the sweeper van comes. I'm nervous and scared, but I know that come March I should be able to make the times.
Before Felix, my cancer, I was training for a half marathon and my times were slow but good 12-13min/mile..now I feel like turtles could pace me 15-16 min/mile. I guess not bad considering I'm in PT now due to cancer treatments.
Thank you for sharing. You gave me some hope you can do this after treatments.
HockeyCat-You are still moving. That is great! Don't worry about what you can or cannot do and remember you are lapping those on the couch.
Oncearunneralwaysarunner – have they tried you on other pills I'm taking Femera at the age of 36 due to a full spay.
NatsFan –Awesome picture! I love the shirt!
Trails-each day you try and you go little farther. Progress will come in time, don't beat yourself up over it.
goldlining – You have awesome times! Someday I hope to get there.
Dltnhm- I want your speed. Awesome job!
Aloha75- Great time on the half!
-
lovestorun, thanks! Steroid is working. Still some rash come up here and there, but it Iooks like almost gone.
FairyDogMother, I love your name. I'm not cat person as you can tell.
I went for a run Sunday morning. I could run only one mile and had to walk & jog for another 1.5 miles. Much slower pace but I'm happy that I'm making progress. 3 more weeks till my first 5k since cancer diagnosis. My goal is to run through the course without walking or stopping. I need to go slow and pace myself.

Hi all -- the Avengers Half at DL was drier than the previous weekend at WDW, but came with Santa Ana winds which were really strong and blowing sand and tree debris at us in all directions. My daughter never did train for this, and said "I don't want to run alone like last time" so I agreed to pace with her, and we set out at 7:30-8:00/km and it seemed really eminently sustainable, although I had food poisoning that took me offline for 3 minutes in the first park washroom stop, but we didn't even make the 5k split before she asked to mostly walk, and then only walk. And her walk was so slow. I have a hip that is still bothering me but I could not even move that slow. We compromised that we would run up and down the hills and walk the flat, and then toward the end, I would walk fast, and she would alternate walking slow and sprinting to catch up. Our finishing time was 6 mins slower than the time I logged 6 weeks post DIEP! Really puts her condition in perspective! But we both got the medals, and had nice "girl's weekend", and no recovery required! My heels are sore, and the hip still is, but zero stiffness in the leg muscles or ligament / tendon pain whatsoever.
Flew directly from Disneyland to Orlando, and spent this evening at the Magic Kingdom. Have to admit, I do enjoy what I do!
-
Goldlining- sorry about the food issues but Im happy to hear you survived generally pain free half
:) Winds were ridiculous !!! I kept laughing "Thor isnt happy with our pace!" and " someone is trying to take us to OZ!!" and last but not least and when we were about to be attacked by the 100th dust devil "exfoliation time!!" yes.. Im a dork. Lost my husband around mile 3-4 .. friend was having foot pain so we stopped often for her to stretch. No PR whatsoever on this, however I had a blast!!
-
TreadSoftly - welcome to this year's thread and congrats on the new addition.
FairyDogMother - I'm trying Zoladex to shut down my ovaries since everything still works, even after chemo and that's cause for concern for my MO. We are going to see how I do on that alone before doing anything else but I'm going to guess that he's going to want me to try an AI if I tolerate the shot well. Can't really speak to the side effects yet since I had my first injection yesterday. OMG that needle hurts, made the pinch of my flu shot seem completely insignificant afterwards!
goldlining and panthrah - congrats on getting the Disney runs done. Sounds like the weather was not conducive to fast running times. Goldlining, hopefully the half in January will have better weather and be a better run for you, third time's a charm right?
Aloha75 - great race report as well, congrats on a run well done.
I feel like I'm forgetting someone, if I am, I'm sorry.
My port came out last Thursday uneventfully. I did manage to have the nurse agree to me me running this week, although not the same distances. The only issue is that I was not to get the bandage wet for a week, which meant no real showers, which is a bit of a problem when you are a stinky, sweaty runner! So I just took it easy. Back on schedule for me tomorrow!
-
The "exfoliation" run was definitely memorable
The two bad-weather runs on consecutive weekends are a total fluke. I'd had, like, 15 runDisney halfs with good weather aside from the first that was unseasonably cold (Princess 2010). I think that's part of what was disappointing. I'd been so lucky up till now and I took it for granted. But I will rest well and train for January and start the 2015 season with a fresh slate. And at least I am not home in the snow this week!
Oncearunner, glad you're able to gradually get back on the road. (Just in time for snow!)
-
Hubby set PR at the 5K 33:10 and I set PR since cancer 44:20. I am not comparing before cancer runs since I my body is fighting neuropathy and lymphoma. I'm starting to believe I can make the time cut off for the HALF MARATHON (my first) in March 2015 in Moab, Utah!
-
congratulations, FairyDogMother!
-
FairyDogMother, great post run smile
-
Good job Fairydogmother! Great photo.
Ran my 5K turkey trot this morning and accomplished all 3 of my goals.. Finished, beat my previous time and was not last . Completed the run in 35 minutes which was an improvement on my 1st race earlier this month. Won't ever be the fastest runner but am content to improve with each run.
-
congrats,Odie!
-
Yay Fairydogmother, we LOVE the picture
Well done!!
-
Congratulations FairyDogMother (great photo!) and odie, good job!
Hope all our American friends are burning off their Thanksgiving calories today!
-
Great picture FairyDogMother, I think I have the same shirt you have but in long sleeve. I love it to run in the evenings since it's so bright.
Odie16, great time on your 5k. I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment about improving at every run. That's my goal for the upcoming year, work towards slightly faster times.
I got another good 22k run this morning. I left early and ran from home in the 'burbs to almost downtown to meet up with friends for brunch. Or as we like to call it, bRUNch. I'd make a comment on the weather but as soon as I do, it would jinx it!
Lovestorun, can you add my name for the Resolution Run 10k on December 31, please. I wasn't planning on doing a race so close to Dopey but it's a fun run so not so much pressure. Just something fun do to on New Year's Eve
-
Congrats all!
Still no takers for someone to moderate the 2015 list......I will be bowing out of that role, and I would feel a little better knowing that someone has stepped up to the plate. PM me if you are interested or have questions. Or post here! Happy holidays. -
Congrats FairyDogMother and Odie! Great picture FairyDog!
My running clinic obviously did me some good - I ran a Turkey trot 5K and had a 5k PR of 11:37 pace - 36 minutes even on a hilly course in 30 degree temps. I've never had a sub-12 pace before, so I was thrilled. Finished 26/48 in my age group.
-
Mary, great result!
I've been doing a training program too but had a terrible 5K run on the weekend. The start was uphill and I just felt sooo tired - maybe a bit of overtraining? I actually restarted when I got to level ground so my time wouldn't be so bad. I feel good today so I'm looking forward to a better run tomorrow.
-
I finished 5k! This was my first race since my diagnosis. I ran with my two wonderful friends (one of them is 6 month pregnant!) and they kept me going. It was my slowest 5k but I'm proud of myself to run through it without stopping or walking. It was a beautiful day!
-
Awesome, HockeyCat! And it will just keep getting better!
-
Hockey - congrats!!!! Great milestone!
I did the Jingle All The Way 5k in DC this morning and set another PR - 11:29. That running clinic was worth every grueling minute.
5,000 runners, most in some sort of holiday costume. It great fun watching all my fellow runners! And who couldn't be inspired running in DC on a cold crisp clear morning? The course took us past the Capitol, through the Mall where the Washington Monument was gleaming on the far end, and past a bunch of Smithsonian museums like American Indian and Air & Space. Beautiful.
Best of all? DC is FLAT!!!!
