Bird Watching Club

Lizzysmom, I have seen more cardinals and woodpeckers. I think now that the leaves are gone I am noticing the birds that have probably been there all along. I made it to my mom's house without any problems. I hear you about all the rugs etc. Her front door opens to the living room as well. It is a constant battle trying to keep the rugs clean. Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving.

Hi birdwatchers- hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving and that you are enjoying the remains of your holiday. I am going to the bird refuge tomorrow and will have pictures to post by the weekend! Stay tuned!
-
I'll be waiting! ;o)
-
Me too!
-
Dear birdwatchers- we had the most spectacular day at the Bosque Del Apache. Blue heron on our way in, many sand hill cranes, and thousands of snow geese. Lots of other water birds, including many varieties of ducks.
The family was in complete awe. My sister said there is nowhere one can see birds in the thousands like this anymore.
Pics coming, the wait will be worth it, I promise!
-
Here we go folks, my best photos from the Bosque Del Apache bird refuge in New Mexico.
These are snow geese and there are THOUSANDS of them there.
-
Close up of the snow geese.
-
Solo snow goose, posing for me I think.....
-
Snow geese on the big pond with the sunlight shimmering on the water.
-
Sand hill cranes in the field with the sentinel crane watching. They come down from Idaho and are found from Albuquerque down to the BDA along the Rio Grande Valley. They are here from late October to end of January. They are very large birds.
-
Field of sand hill cranes. There are thousands of them at the BDA too.

Jazzy,
Thank You for the lovely photos.
Had to be a lot of noisy birds! ;o)
-
Teka- yes they were, especially the geese! I tried to do a video just to capture the sound of the geese on the big pond but not sure it took. Going to re-download that one later. The cranes sort of making a quieter croaking sound.
I found this beautiful video on line from one of the professional photographers in the area. It will give you a sense of the sound there.

Jazzy, Wow, what a treat, so many beautiful birds all in one place. I love that little guy that is posing so nicely! I can't imagine so many sandhill cranes. They are huge and roam the golf courses in Florida like they own them but I have only ever seen a small group.
I got some shots over thanksgiving vacation. Was very lucky to catch a heron I think just as it took off. I also got up early, for me, and took some duck pics.
-
Lyzzy- your photos are outstanding! I love the photo of the heron is just amazing! What kind of camera do you use?
-
Jazzy, Thank you!! The heron was lucky and I darkened the highlights and sharpened after the fact to bring out the feather detail. He took off just as I took the pic and it was sunny so I just happened to have the camera set to really high speed, like 1/3000 so I got him. The photos I posted were taken with my best camera, a sony A77 mk II which I treated myself to and a Tamron Zoom 70 - 300 that is so heavy that I have to rest it unless shooting at very high speed and its a pain to cart around. Its good for birds and sports. I use a fuji Finepix 750EXR for a lot of photos where I don't need a long zoom. It fits in my pocket and does nice landscapes, closeups and really sharp macros on the auto settings but not so great for a long zoom.
I took this Anhinga with the Fuji as he was hanging out close to me.
-
I have to bring in my water dishes- they are iced up. I keep seeing hopeful little birdies coming and bonking their beaks. So sad!
-
Stinky Peeper trying to steal a drink from Mom's cup - he's lucky he's cute!!
-
He IS cute!! Does he speak?
-
Other than kisses & Peeper Squeak (what we ended up naming him) - no he/she does not talk. I wish he did - but it's been 10 years, don't think I can teach an old bird new tricks

came upon this guy when his Mcconaughy (sp) imitation went viral last week or so. Hes pretty cute and says a ton of stuff
-
My goodness, that is one chatty parrot!! My neighbor has a bird that yells Ronnie, his owners name.
I took these this morning down by a boat dock where I have been staying. That duck was cute and ignored me.
-
DS and DIL left their birds with a bird sitter while they went on vacation. When they returned, the conure said "stop it!" and used it appropriately.
-
wow that last bird, is incredible. I love it
-
Even common birds can strike a pose..
-
Lyzzy- what kind of bird in that bottom picture? Looks like some kind of crane?
-
Blue Heron?
