I stopped for almost 2 months in a break between arimidex and exemestane to get over an eye SE. Felt great to have estrogen back, but really freaked me out to not be on an AI so early in my treatment.

My onc had me stop Anastrozole for 2 weeks before I started Exemestane.  I was having very bad pain and towards the end of the two weeks the pain let up a lot.  It felt so good to feel better but got to admit the whole 2 weeks I was terrified the cancer would come back.

In a year and a half, I've taken three breaks:  Two weeks, four weeks, three weeks, and switched from arimidex to exemestane, and then back to arimidex.  I definitely talked with my onc about my side effects, and also the advantages of trying a different med, and whether he thought it adviseable to take some time off (he absolutely did!).  Oh, yes, and I also had PT, which fixed the agonizing hip pain (turned out to be bursitis, not the AI at all.   Maybe your onc will get you set up with that too, if your issues are joint related.

Do call or email your onc, or set up a visit.  If you're like me, you'll probably prefer the visit--more opportunity to ask more questions.  And, yes, managing our meds is a very significant part of your onc's practice and he or she very much wants to know how you're doing.
