Bird Watching Club

Lizzysmom, I just finished watching The Fault in Our Stars and crying like I knew I would. I wanted to see that when I was still in treatment and my PT didn't think it was a good idea as I was getting sad and emotional at the end of my treatments which now I know was perfectly normal.
Banana bread sounds good. I unfortunately found out a year ago in the spring that I am severely gluten intolerant so finding stuff with no sugar and no gluten is about impossible. I have bought the alternative flour and I use stevia but not sure how that works out in baking. Maybe one day I will actually try it.
Guess what. When I got in my car on the way to DD I found my screwdriver. LOL I just had my car detailed and had been putting the mats back in and had backed it out and long story short I found it IN the car. Geeez I feel like I am losing it,. Well if I don't get to bed that extra hour is going to be zero.
Good night.

Bandwoman, Come visit Seattle. We have gluten free bakeries here.
-
Nancy, Well I am glad you found that screwdriver!! I watched the Fault in our Starts a couple of weeks ago. Yes its is a real 3 hanky job.
DH likes Stevia but me not so much. I am not sure if you can cook with it.
It was snowing here this morning and I only had the seed bricks so I put a spare brick on the deck and all the little guys turned up. took some photos but all very high ISO as it was snowy, gloomy and I was indoors.
My little alarm clocks did go off at 6:15 this morning LOL. Bang Bang on the window woke me up!
Cant post photos just now will try again.

Hey Wren, I am willing to accept a package anytime
Lizzysmom, Such cute little birds. I don't know if I have ever seen a Titmouse in my yard but my sister gets them downstate all the time. They are so cute I did see a Nuthatch this morning. That is the first I have seen on in a long time. The Juncos or snowbirds as we call them are here. I guess that means the inevitable. Boy you did get snow. I heard SC got two inches. Go figure. I put out one of those suet things one time and about 100 starlings all flew in like it was a big family reunion. I decided to never do that again. LOL My birds were as happy as clams today with the heated birdbath. The doves love to sit on the rim backwards and stick their tail feathers in the water. Must be like a little sauna for them. Time for a nap. I stayed up so late last night I didn't really get that extra hour but less than usual.
-
Here are a couple of birds I don't see often. The Cedar Waxwings migrate at least once a year and there will be a whole flock of them ascending on my crabapples and plum trees.
This one below is a Rose breasted grossbeak. First one that I have ever seen. He stayed around a couple of days.
The doves didn't mind him at all.
-
I got the same reaction to suet. Billions of starlings. Will never do that again.
-
Nancy, I will have to think about a heated birdbath. Is it electrical. I do have an outdoor outlet on my deck that I could use I guess. I probably could not see the birds from indoors but it would be nice to know they are warm.
I have never seen a ceder waxwing and just one rose breasted grosbeak. It was outside my window I think it was the day I came back from the hospital after Lx. I remember thinking it was so strange given the name of the bird. I have not seen it before or since but thought it was so pretty.
I don't like the suet unless there is nothing else, especially for my window. Oh boy, what a mess!!
I had a few more visitors to the deck. Some pictures were not so clear but I got this little cardinal. The squirrel did not bother him!
Not a bird, but he was pretending to be!
-
Lizzysmom, Such great pics of the cardinal and the squirrel. I guess when you talk about bricks I don't know if I know what that is. The suet things are the only thing that I know of. Sometimes I see a bell shaped things with food. I buy my birdfeed by the bulk so I am not usually looking at the other stuff. I will have to look for that.
I spent several hours last night looking up heated birdbaths. Yes, most of them are electrical. I don't remember if I saw solar ones or not but in the dark and dreary days of winter it probably wouldn't be very practical. I do have a solar fountain in my front yard and that works quite well but that is in the summer.
My heated birdbath is so old the brackets that I use to anchor it down are getting really rusty and are about to fall apart. I was looking online to see if I could find one like I have. No such luck except one maybe might work. I am thinking of giving them a call as it says it has several types of brackets to use in different ways. The big thing now looks like a heated birdbath that can attach to a deck railing. They can tilt if you want to get rid of old water. That is the only issue with mine. It is so cold many times when I am out there trying to clean it and refill the water. Mine screws off the base but the problem is when I am unscrewing it sometime the brackets will come off too and that is a real pain. I think the ones now look like they have a better design to them. I saw some that said they had a 12 ft cord. Mine has a very short cord so I have to have it plugged in to a drop cord. Not the best thing but I have done it for both my fountain and birdbath for years. I can see my birdbath from my dining room so when I am eating breakfast I can watch all the activity. It really is a lot of fun. Well enjoy the rest of your night.

Saw quite a few birds this weekend
-
Lisa, beautiful bird pics. I have never seen a dove with markings like that. It looks like he or she has a little scarf around their neck.
-
Lisa, I love those bird pictures too. We get mourning doves around here but I have never seen one like that. Is that another type of woodpecker? We get a few sorts, downy, red bellied and one other I cant think of the name of but he looks different.
Nancy, I think you are better off with your 50x zoom than the new 60X. It got mixed reviews so far on Amazon. I got the impression that compared to the 50X and other prior models some of the features for people who are serious about taking photos have been replaced with more wifi social media type stuff.
-
I think they are called spotted doves. There seemed to be a flock of them on Catalina Island.
-
The woodpecker I think is an acorn woodpecker.
-
I had fun with my son as sometimes he would play the bird sounds on his iPhone to attract them.
-
^..^
-
cute loon teka
-
Seems to be a lot of loon photos taken in the North Country! ;o)
-
-
This morning on my walk
-
Teka, That baby loon and Mom or Dad is so cute.
Lisa, I am in awe at all the neat birds that you get to see all the time. Such great shots.
-
I almost missed the green heron..he blended into the background
-
either my brain or computer is not working properly (thought I posted earlier but can't find it)
The loon and baby is just so adorable.
Lisa, great shots. I love the expression on the green heron. He looks so serious!
-
now look at the difference
-
I know my winter Bird feeder placement is OK as the residents like this chickadee approve and even the red belly that likes my window has made an appearance today!
-
Cute little Chickadee. Nice pic. That is my favorite bird I think. I saw two different kinds of woodpeckers in my backyard today. That is unusual. I don't see very many at all usually. I am not sure what the big one was drinking out of my heated birdbath. I can't get my hose disconnected. I was out there yesterday and coudn't get it off the spigot. I even had a wrench. It is in an awkward place and very hard to get to with a wrench. Today I just don't feel great so I am getting ready to take a nap and plan on doing nothing today. There was a marathon blocking my way to my church so I didn't go today.
-
Nancy, I hope you feel better after your nap. I think we overdo it. I will have a list of things I may want to do in a day but usually only end up doing one task then veg out like I am now.
The last 2 years I forgot to turn off the water and only realized when the hose pipe burst and we heard running water. The spigot at the front is new but the one in the back is old and can be tough to turn off.
You have a good rest this evening.
-
I have a rash on my back which I think might be poison ivy. It is driving me crazy and everything I have tried doesn't do much. I noticed this on Friday after itching on Thursday night thinking it might be a mosquito bite. It is in an awkward place where I can't see very well. I was just reading if you have had poison ivy in the past which I have it tends to get worse after having it before. So I think I will have to try to get in to see my doctor hopefully tomorrow. I know the State park I went to had signs that there was poison ivy on the trails and to watch out. I know I probably have some in my yard and I was cleaning the gutters recently. One more thing to deal with! -
Mum, I think I saw the same type of bird here, in the zoo, of course
