HockeyCat-YAY!! I just printed my waiver for Avengers.. should prolly pick an outfit at some point :p

LuvLulu- Cute dude behind you is awesome but the glow on your face is EPIC!

dltnhm- Ive never heard of one on the ankle ish area.. but I suppose there is just as much wiring there as in the wrist. Wrist wise they are more annoying than painful. But Id think it would become troublesome on the ankle.  dont they usually pop on their own or get drained/ cortizone shot to make them go away?

So I have the Komen 5k on Nov 2 .. joined a ladies team that Ive seen on these boards... Its called Purr for the Cure .. I get whiskers drawn on...Im disturbingly excited by this whisker wearing for a "race"  >^..^<

Luv LOVE!  Fantastic pictures, and you rocked that young feller.  Makes me almost want to do another marathon!  If I did, it might be Bay State.  A friend did the half and said it was a great course.

lovestorun, I'm going to run Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run on 12/6. This is a fun event going on for 37 years. I've been running this race since I started running in 2007. My friends will be running with me. It'll be fun.

Luv, loved your pictures! You looked great and so happy.

panthrah, Avengers sound fun. I wanna see your Avengers outfit!

Just signed up for two races!

November 27 - Turkey Trot 5K, Hagerstown, MD

December 7 - Jingle All the Way 5K, Washington, DC

So glad that cooler weather is here - ever since chemo and letrozole I've been a walking hot flash, so I do much better in the fall and winter.

Great pictures and race reports Tammy and LuvLuLu. I find the emotions that appear on race pictures are just so real. You can't really get that with other pictures. As for young guys, it's awesome when we see them behind us, but I'll admit that I don't mind if I'm following one

Im still on track for Dopey training but I'll admit that I have not been getting as much short week day runs in as I would like. Just don't have the time and energy. I might be able to get more runs in if people would stop booking meetings over lunch! Next week will be better.

Hi all -- I have been swamped so I'm remiss in my cheering for the accomplishments for a while, so let me register a "hooray" where appropriate!

I'm also missing out on the training I should be doing. No concerns with endurance. I have that in the bag, but not enough runs for pace. It's just too hectic. I will be standing at WDW starting line of the W&D two weeks from now. I hope to run once or twice this week, but it may remain a hope. Suffocating deadlines. I can commit to carb load and taper, however!

Aaaaaah, carb load and taper.  It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it!!! Nerdy

I'm glad to be in the "recovery" phase.  Did my first run on the road and felt good this morning - legs just a little tired.  Off to vacation next week - Savannah and St. Augustine - and maybe I'll do a couple of easy runs there.  Or not!

Good luck panthrah, odie, natsfan, on your upcoming races! Will check back in next week after vacation.

panthrah, yep Dopey! It seemed like a good idea in April when my girlfriend and I signed up for it! I'll let everyone know if it was a good idea when I get back from Florida in January.

Had a good 23k run this morning. I'm a little stiff but I'm sure it's nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of stretching.

Oncearunner- Just think of all the BLING!! The other hard part is the consecutive early mornings. Now Im pretty sure I could do the 5,10,half. but no chance of the full, especially after the other three. Im doing the 10,half for star wars in jan ..82 days from now and I was going to add the 5k as well cause its star wars :P But we choose not to. (extra day off the first week back to work and all that)  It always seems like a good idea at the time of registration ;p

The bling is the main reason why I'm doing it. I need the tenth anniversary Goofy medal to go with my fifth anniversary one! I think I'll be drinking lots of coffee during that weekend. And I'm sure there will be some early nights too.

Now the big question that I have to figure out is whether or not I dress up for the races...

    Go, bling!

Dressing up really can weigh down the packing, but with all the sweating up of the first outfit, I figure I'm into a second outfit anyway. The tights will dry, but the tops look like they've been to the wars. I've done the 10K/half consecutive, not the Goofy, but I imagine it's only more so the longer you're going. I have to wear something, so it may as well be themed. However, the more of them I do, the more I lean to the Disneybounding approach, with the colour scheme and small accessories, rather than a full-on costume that isn't really optimal for running.

However, I only pack the first outfit in the carryon. If the checked suitcase is lost, worst case scenario, I can use the first outfit again - but there are plenty of emergency replenishment options at the Expo, as well. Last time, I pre-ordered a tank top for the Dumbo half, but decided I didn't like it, and bought another tank at New Balance, and didn't really like that, so I drove to Target and found a perfect one! I came home with so much stuff!

Luv, congrats on your recent run. Love the photo of you with the young man behind you....Have a great vacation.

Any suggestions for cold weather run attire that won't break the bank?

My favourite cold weather choice is merino wool (like smartwool and icebreaker). They are not cheap but they are durable and smell-resistant, and I have so gotten my money's worth. I even wear the smartwool half-zip mock neck with jeans for regular clothing (I bought top and tights in black) and I bought the set at least five years ago. They're really a perfect skin layer. Love them.

I am running the Jamie's Run 5k on Sunday, 11/2. It is a fundraiser for Ct Children's Medical Center in memory of the 6 month old daughter of my coworker. She lost her 3 month battle with liver cancer.

It was my motivation to start running this summer. I have only been able to walk it in the past. I am pretty excited that I am going to run it this year.

Ginger48 and odie16, positive thoughts for Sunday

LuvLuLu, you look amazing in your photos!!!  In my photo I looked like I'd run a marathon, you look like you'd taken a walk around the block!  AMAZING!!!

Ginger, that's just marvelous.  What a terrific way to honor your coworker and her daughter.  Good luck too Odie and Panthrah!

Odie, I second smartwool socks.  They are expensive, but they wear like iron and they keep your toes warm!  Have never tried a wool top or tights - I just layer up the tech stuff and usually top it off with a nylon shell so I can use the zipper as a thermostat.  Gloves from the likes of Old Navy or the Dollar Store, as I tend to lose them.  Fleece or acrylic hat that covers my ears.  I have Reynaud's, so if it's really cold I will carry those hand-warmer packs with me (I find that my fingers seize up when I *stop* running).

Goldlinging and Oncearunner- I "dress up" for sure.. but def more that dinsyebounding style.. we got shirts made "Villains have more fun" with a mickey head, bat wings and crown for the princess race and wore purple and green for Maleficent.  still working the avengers outfit tho :p

Lovestorun- I now have Reynauds too. My mom always said i had it since i always have cold hands (warm heart tho).. then this year,  fingers would drop color and inside hand would go purple. races are awful.. cant keep my hand warm.  arm compression sleeves seem to make it worse. bought some target gloves for the next few races, i have a hand warmer somewhere (saving that for the half). For me (this is silly) if its below 68 degrees.. it happens. Never happened in summer.. but every single morning as Im getting dressed. *shrug* oh well.

So ladies.... How often do you wash your shoes?  How do you wash your shoes? back in the day mom would chuck them in the washer with towels and chuck them in the dryer with towels. Any other ideas?

    Wash. Your. Shoes??????

    Not ever. Not even once.

I don't think running shoes take to it. Keds, sure, but not the type of thing I would run in now.

I do have a separate pair that is insulated for snowy season, and I do not go out of my way to run in the mud, so I don't get a lot of dirt build-up on the shoes, and I do tend to replace them after fewer miles than the rule of thumb because I'm heavier than the typical marathon waif, so maybe that helps too.

My shoes get washed the natural way if it's raining when I run - hah!   I read somewhere to never put them in the dryer.  The heat breaks down the rubber soles.  Old newspaper stuffed in them can help them dry out.

Sorry about the Reynaud's Panthrah - it can be so frustrating to have it come on suddenly.  FWIW, when I'm not running, I tend to wear mittens in the winter - they keep my fingers warmer.  Smartwool socks for the toes.

ok, I just had a look at disneybound and that stuff is right up my alley. Simple but themed. I can't really imagine myself running with an elaborate costume. I've decided that I'm dressing up as Princess Leia for either the 5 or 10k. I have a long sleeve and short sleeve white top with a white running skort, plus I made myself a crochet Leia "wig" last year when I had no hair for Halloween. The "wig" would be too hot for anything longer. I'll have to think about the other races. If I find a blue vest I can pull off Goofy with black tights and an orange shirt I already have. More thinking on my part.

As for winter gear, I think it's worth while investing in layers that are not cotton. I find it really depends on how quickly you warm up. I heat up like crazy so it's hard to say. My biggest advice is to make sure that layers are wicking and not cotton.

I can't help with washing running shoes, I never have. If they are really muddy I let them dry out then use a nail brush to brush off the dirt.

    Way to go ChristyJ!!!

Good luck tomorrow Panthrah, Mary and Ginger!

Think I am set for my 5k in the morning. Should be cold and blustery in the 40's. Planning to wear a short sleeved workout shirt under a long sleeved running top and have a  cheap pair of gloves in case the hands are cold. Figure I should be fine once we start running.
